Daisy the Great

Openers Daisy the Great are actually a Brooklyn-based duo, fronted by Kelley Nicole Dugan and Mina Walker who made waves last fall when they teamed with AJR on the song, “Record Player”, a re-worked version of their own 2017 folk-pop song. …

Brooklyn’s indie pop band Daisy the Great (Kelley Nicole Dugan and Mina Walker) just headlined the 7th Street Entry on Sunday evening.

Opening the show was Los Angeles, via Portland, queer singer/songwriter Olive Klug, playing songs from their debut album Don’t You Dare Make Me Jaded (available August 11th via Nettwerk).

Even though the record haven’t been released, many of Klug’s fans already knew all the songs - often singing along loud and proud.

Klug mentioned how amazing everyone have been, and impressed that fans lined up outside the venue, in the snow and in the cold, before doors open. “I wouldn’t have done that!,” Klug laughed. And speaking of weather, “…here’s a song about the weather…” as notes from “Raining In June” were played.

Klug apologized to a fan, who asked for a particular song. There just wasn’t enough time to accommodate for the request, but they promised that they’ll be back in Minneapolis soon as a headliner with a longer set. With that, they ended their brief 30-minute set with “Self Help”, a big hit with the young girls in the audience.

Despite the snow, Daisy the Great drew in quite the crowd. Everyone on the dancefloor were already super dedicated fans, knowing all the songs and have kept up with the duo’s misadventures on their tour. The 7th Street Entry was only their four show on this 2023 tour … yet they seemed like seasoned professionals, even though they’re often goofing and joking around.

You can tell, by the way the two looked at each other, that they communicate with each other by just their eyes or smile.

The band have their routine for each song. For example, for “I’m Fine”, they wore shades to look cool. For the new song, “Tell Me Have You Been Dancing” (the song that they worked with Claud for the remix), they have a fun dance. For “Smile Pretty Girl”, Olive Klug came on stage to help them play the song.

To be perfectly honest, the Daisy the Great didn’t really feel like they were working at all. They’re just having fun, and you can tell that it won’t be long before they’ll return. Let’s just hope it doesn’t snow next time.

Acclaimed artist Claud recently released “Tommy”, the first new material since their impressive debut album, Super Monster (Saddest Factory Records).

Of course, we heard “Tommy” in Oct 2021, when Claud was touring with Bleachers, “There was a new song in the set, called “Tommy”, which Claud said they wrote six weeks ago, when they went on tour...”

Veteran darkwave ensemble The Birthday Massacre will stop by the Fine Line on March 1st, in support of their ninth album Fascination (Metropolis Records).

We previously caught the band in May 2017 and wrote, “Light again dimmed and headliner The Birthday Massacre emerged, beginning its eighty-minute set with the opening ‘One’ and its beginning lyric, “Caught up in the waves in death of the day, sing like sirens in shadows”. The Toronto band has been in existence for almost two decades, continually gaining acclaim and a greater audience, but still remains a bit of a dark wave musical secret and cult band (hence, the fans in bunny ears) to most mainstream audiences.”

Popular American pop band Bleachers sold out the Fillmore, in Minneapolis, on October 26th.

We’ve been meaning to check out Minneapolis’ latest concert venue, The Fillmore, for quite a while now. The venue opened up in February 2020, during the pandemic shutdown, and only started booking shows in August/September 2021. We actually tried to see a show there in October, but the show was canceled at the last minute due to someone in the band getting COVID.

The venue is quite nice and elegant (complete with chandeliers) and large… a massive 22,000 square feet, to accomodate 1,500 attendees. Next to the Varsity Theater, the Fillmore is one of the nicest looking venues around the city.

Opening up this all-ages show was Chicago’s Claud (Claud Mintz), accompanied by a guitarist. Claud played some tracks from their album Super Monster, the first record on Phoebe Bridgers’ record label, Saddest Factory.

Songs, played early in the set, “In or In-Between” and “That's Mr. B**** to You” sounded very personal and introspective.

There was a new song in the set, called “Tommy”, which Claud said they wrote six weeks ago, when they went on tour with Bleachers.

Highlight of the set was “Guard Down”, which Claud played piano and replaced “New York” with “Minneapolis”, making the crowd cheer when they heard their city’s name.

Claud ended their set with “Wish You Were Gay” and song finale, “Soft Spot”… perfectly ending on the 30-minute mark.

We’ve seen Bleachers before, they’re a really fun pop group from New York. This time around, joining songwriter/record producer Jack Antonoff (who is also in Steel Train, Fun, and Red Hearse) on stage were keyboardist Evan Smith, guitarist Mikey Hart, drummer/keys Sean Hutchinson, drummer Mike Riddleberger, and saxophonist Zem Audu.

Starting their set with “Let's Get Married”, followed by “Shadow”, the band had the audience sing along to their high-energy songs.

I think the coolest thing about Bleachers is that Antonoff would personalized random merchandises, like writing on patches, so some lucky fans could get something interesting when they visit the merch table.

Bleachers’ latest Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night is out now on RCA Records.

Haley Reinhart is touring in support of her album Lo-Fi Soul. The tour was supposed to land in Minneapolis on April 15th, 2019 (with opener Jennah Bell), but according to the venue, Dave Chappelle has booked a week-long residency.

UPDATE: I am told the Reinhart show is still taking place April 15th, despite what the venue is listing.
