Local band Drones (not to be confused with Australia’s The Drones) opened up the show, followed by special guest Brooklyn’s Big Eyes (not to be confused with James Green’s project Big Eyes).
The quartet (singer / guitarist Kait Eldridge, guitarist Paul Ridenour, bassist Malcolm Donaldson, and drummer Griffin Harrison), played tracks from their third LP Stake My Claim (Don Giovanni Records)... including title track ‘Stake My Claim’.
Eldridge mentioned that they have sold almost all the 7” to their single ‘Local Celebrity’, but had one copy left (which was gone by the end of the show).
Midway in their set, they covered The Undertones song, which she thanked Nate in the audience (who also jumped on stage to help the band sing the outro).
One of three surviving members of The Ramones, CJ Ramone took the stage around 10:40pm. Knowing that fans were there to celebrate all-things-Ramones, CJ did throw in some classic Ramones songs (not listed on their set). Also, since it was rather a late show (for a Wednesday), CJ wisely skipped over some songs, which thankfully kept the set to about an hour.
Again, the setlist only serve as a “suggestion”. For example, the first song was a cover of Chris Montez’s ‘Let’s Dance’, followed by ‘Let’s Go’ as a weird medley. The first part of his set was CJ-solo heavy, some tracks from American Beauty, but as soon as the familiar Ramones’ ‘Rockaway Beach’ was played, the audience completely loosened up.
Midway in their set, he asked Big Eye’s Kait Eldridge to come on stage to help him sing ‘Without You’. Apparently she also sings on the recorded version on the new record.
By this time, CJ slipped in Ramones’ ‘Outsider’, followed by ‘Three Angels’, a song that he dedicated to Joey, Johnny, and Dee Dee (before Tommy died).
The latter half of CJ’s set were Ramones-heavy. This included The Ronnettes’ ‘Baby, I Love You’ (which the Ramones covered), and some less-famous Ramones cut like ‘My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes to Bitburg)’ and ‘Commando’ (dedicated to the 1% of military servicemen).
Bobby Freeman’s ‘Do You Wanna Dance?’, Joe Jones’ ‘California Sun’ and set closer Motörhead’s ‘R.A.M.O.N.E.S.’ closed out the show. The former two songs were covered by the Ramones.
Understandably the show ran late, but we would’ve love the hits ‘I Wanna Be Sedated’ or ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’, but sadly those were not played. Still, despite lacking the two big hits, it was still very nice to hear some old Ramones songs.
Also worth noting that the band was tight. They were versatile enough to change playing style on the fly as CJ changes his mind and leave or add songs on the setlist.
