We first caught Ages And Ages in 2011 and was surprised to see that they all fit on the tiny 7th Street Entry stage... now the Portland band has reduced to just six players: inger/guitarist Tim Perry, percussionist Sarah Riddle, bassist Rob Oberdorfer, guitarist Annie Bethancourt, keys Colin Jenkins, and drummer Evan Railton.

New York’s Caveman (not to be confused with San Francisco’s Caveman Sound or rapper Caveman or New Zealand’s The Cavemen) is back on tour this Fall in support of their new album Otero War, available now on Cinematic Music Group.

You may recall that we previously caught the band with Frightened Rabbit in April 2016 when they previewed some of their new songs.

We’ve been following Caveman since 2013.

Philly-based haze-pop quintet Cheerleader will open. The band was just in town in June 2016 with Eliot Sumner , and we wrote, “ The story of this band is that they originally started in Hartford, Connecticut between Joe Haller and Chris Duran, creating music in Duran’s basement. When they relocated to Philadelphia, the two decided to take their love of creating music seriously, so they form Cheerleader.”

They’ve just released their debut album The Sunshine of Your Youth last year, and have previously toured with The Wombats (yes, we caught Cheerleader in 2015), The Hold Steady, Colony House, and Knox Hamilton.

Eliot Sumner just headlined the Turf Club in St Paul last Sunday, June 12th, in support of her latest Information (Island Records).

Murder Shoes

Local guest Murder Shoes (featuring Tess Weinberg, Christopher White, Derek Van Gieson, Elliot Manthey, and Tim Heinlein) opened the show. We previously caught the band on their 30th show last Oct 2015 and wrote, “The band’s twin jangly guitars sometimes echo The Pixies or The Blasters, with singer Weinberg sounding similar at times to Patti Smith or an angrier Maria McKee of Lone Justice fame.”

Their music is a little dark, at times shoegazing (thanks to their three guitarists with their pedal effects and feedbacks), and for this show, they previewed all new songs (with a few exceptions such as opening song ‘Charlotte Manning’ and ‘How Does It Feel?’) that they just recorded that Monday and Tuesday. They seemed really excited about the new songs.

Cheerleader

Philadelphia’s Cheerleader (Joe Haller, Chris Duran, Paul Impellizeri, Josh Pannepacker, Carl Bahner) was next, playing most of their album The Sunshine of Your Youth (Bright Antenna Records). The story of this band is that they originally started in Hartford, Connecticut between Joe Haller and Chris Duran, creating music in Duran’s basement. When they relocated to Philadelphia, the two decided to take their love of creating music seriously, so they form Cheerleader. The name may be a problem, as there are already several bands also called Cheerleader...

Highlight of their 40-min set was actually an unscheduled ‘Happy Birthday To You’ sung to their keyboardist Josh, right before unveiling their new song, which they have written on their setlist as ‘Domestica’.

If you didn’t know, Eliot Sumner is the child of Sting and actress/producer Trudie Styler. You have to point out this fact, because Sumner, when she talks or sing, it sounds a little bit like her father. It’s really uncanny.

Sumner started her music career very early, as a teenager called Coco. She stopped using that stagename, and reverted back to Eliot Sumner, when she signed with Island Records at the age of 17.

Songs on her slightly under an hour set featured mostly songs from the latest Information, including the title track that ended the main set. The title track is actually, possibly the best track, at least when heard live. It’s very upbeat and really ended on a high note.

Sumner returned to the stage for the inevitable encore, to end the show with ‘Species’.

We’ve previously mentioned singer and multi-instrumentalist Eliot Sumner when she went on tour with locals On An On last year... touring in support of her debut Information.

Sumner is finding her way back to Minnesota and will be at the Turf Club in St Paul this June 12th, with support from duo Cheerleader (Joe Haller and Chris Duran).

Cheerleader’s debut album The Sunshine of Your Youth came out last year on Bright Antenna Records.

On the heels of releasing Local H’s As Good As Dead as a 180g for the record’s 20th anniversary... the old-school punk band will go on tour to remind us why the record was a breakthrough album for them.

As Good As Dead was the band’s second full-length album, produced by Steven Haigler (Quicksand, Pixies) and was originally released on April, 16, 1996 on Island Records on CD and cassette (note: no vinyl version). Singer Scott Lucas, remarked, “The question I get asked the absolute most is when are we gonna put the older records out on vinyl? Here's the answer -- in the best possible way. The package is looking pretty good and I'm ALMOST as excited as anybody to finally drop the needle on this album -- on double vinyl, at last.”

A$AP Ferg and Toronto rapper Tory Lanez are set to bring their “Level Up Tour” to Minneapolis next Monday, June 13th.

Ferg is currently touring in support of his sophomore album, Always Strive and Prosper via A$AP Worldwide/Polo Grounds Music/RCA Records.

Lanez’s breakout single “Say It,” which peaked at #1 on Rhythmic and Urban radio charts, has already been on various “artists to watch” lists. Expect his debut album this year on Benny Blanco’s Mad Love imprint on Interscope Records.

After seeing The Wombats at the Triple Rock Social Club in early 2012 (their then-third time in Minneapolis within a year), we were pretty excited to have them returning to the Varsity Theater last Wednesday, May 6th. In the short three year absent since then, the UK band had gained a massive young fanbase. This is unbelievably amazing for the band, but ultimately made me feel incredibly old as we've been writing about this Liverpool band since 2007, before they had a record deal.

Wombats at The Electric Fetus

Before their sold-out show at the Varsity Theater, the trio stopped into local independent record store The Electric Fetus for a brief acoustic performance of songs from their recent Glitterbug release.

Singles 'Your Body is a Weapon' and 'Greek Tragedy' along with 'Give Me a Try', were played, all of which were well-received to the enthusiastic crowd that had gathered for the free late afternoon performance.

The only unfortunate thing was that it lasted less than 15 min, as singer Murph needed to rest his voice for the show that evening, but it was nice to hear the new songs stripped and acoustic, with even drummer Dan Haggis trading in his sticks for a guitar.

Cheerleader

At the Varsity Theater show, the first of two support act, Philadelphia's Cheerleader opened up the show. They wore their UK love on their sleeves as they walked on stage to the sounds of The Stone Roses' "She Bang the Drums". The band was previously in town in October 2014 with Colony House at the Turf Club, but confessed that the Varsity show had a bigger audience.

Cheerleader was surprisingly good, playing some tracks, such as the title track and "Perfect Vision", from their forthcoming album The Sunshine of Your Youth, available May 19th via Bright Antenna Records.

Life in Film

Next was London's Life in Film, their first time in Minneapolis (which they've mistaken was the same as Indianapolis, their previous show). The band consists of singer/guitarist Samuel Fry, guitarist Edward Ibbotson, bassist Dominic Sennett, and drummer Micky Osment.

Looking over their setlist, they previewed a couple of new tracks ("Full Circle", "It's What Happens Next That Matters Most"), but with a healthy selections from their two previous EPs, including "Anna Please Don't Go" and set closer "Alleyway".

Based on the strong positive feedback from the audience, the band said they hope to be back again someday soon.

Wombat's Setlist

As for The Wombats, fans flooded the front of the stage, dancing and singing to all of hits, particularly "Moving to New York", "Kill the Director", and "Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)", and the two-song encore: "Emoticons" and classic "Let's Dance To Joy Division".

According to their intended setlist, they removed "Party In A Forest (Where's Laura?)" from their set make room for "Patricia The Stripper" per a fan's request. Murph noted that they hadn't practice the song in a long time... implying that if they messed up, it wasn't entirely their fault.

Half of their set were devoted to their latest Glitterbug ("Your Body Is A Weapon", "Greek Tragedy", "Be Your Shadow", "This Is Not A Party", "Headspace", "The English Summer", "Give Me A Try", and "Emoticons") with the remaining set divided between A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation (2007) and This Modern Glitch (2011). Overall a good, balanced set, although noticeably absent was fan-favorite "Backfire at the Disco".

We hope to see the same passionate fans again when The Wombats return back to Minneapolis (to a bigger venue, of course). The Wombats' Glitterbug is out now on Bright Antenna Records/14th Floor Records/Warners Music UK.

This will be the third time Vintage Trouble will be playing Minneapolis, the first at the tiny Nether Bar and the second at Cultivate Festival 2014.

Oddly enough, the Varsity Theater was not originally listed on their tour schedule, but we're glad to see they added the show for this Sunday.

The first time I saw Slow Magic, they were second of three bands/DJs over at the Triple Rock Social Club, last year.

I wrote that the DJ had a custom fox mask that would light up and change color to fit the mood of the songs. It was visually really cool, and the music's not bad either!

Although the show is at the Cedar Cultural Center, it's actually a First Avenue show. The last time Of Montreal played in Minneapolis, it was also at the Cedar last year, which Jamie described as, "a wildly inventive show" with balloons, "topless gremlins", and a horse-like contraption.

Of Montreal will be touring in support of their forthcoming album Aureate Gloom, which doesn't have a release date, at this time.

Opening up the show will be Pillar Point, who is out on their first US tour this fall. Pillar Point (Scott Reitherman) will be likely playing tracks from his self-titled debut album.

It's always good to see that Tennis will be back in Minneapolis on October 7th, celebrating their new album Ritual In Repeat (which came out September 9th on Communion Records). The husband/wife duo (Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley) is fresh off their sold-out North American tour with Haim.

Opening for Tennis will be Pure Bathing Culture. You may recall that Jessie caught the Portland-based band in Los Angeles earlier this year and reported, "Sarah Versprille’s souring, angelic vocals and Daniel Hindman’s incandescent guitar solos, this powerfully divine foursome sets the tone for a truly ethereal concert experience. I’m not sure how she does it, but Sarah makes a mullet look completely modern AND rad."
