Liverpool’s Echo & the Bunnymen headlined the Fillmore in Minneapolis on Wednesday, September 6th.

We previously wrote about Cayucas as originally named Oregon Bike Trails in 2013. The Santa Monica group features twins Zach and Ben Yudin.

After signing to Secretly Canadian and going on tour with Ra Ra Riot, the band remained relatively quiet since they released Blue Summer during the pandemic…. that is until we caught wind that they were heading out on tour with Echo & the Bunnymen, in August 2022.

As Zach explained on stage, they were asked to support Echo because the band is a big fan of their song, “Yeah Yeah Yeah”, which they happily played on their set. In fact, they made sure the song is played every night, per Echo and the Bunnymen’s personal request.

It’s easy to see why the band likes it - it’s super catchy: “I stopped and stuttered, turned around and muttered, ‘damn, I guess I'm a dork’, yeah yeah yeah…” Even if you didn’t know the lyrics, the ‘yeah yeah yeah’ will have you singing along.

They ended their 40-min set with “Summer Moon”, and there was a very long wait until the main attraction came on stage. The crowd was restless, and you can overhear someone asks, “What time are they coming on?”

About 9:30pm, Echo & the Bunnymen, came on stage, in darkness: Ian McCulloch on vocals and Will Sergeant on lead guitars, with Pete Reilly on guitars, Stephen Brannan on bass, Mike Smith on keyboards and Simon Finley on drums.

They had the audience in the palm of their hands, hand-picking selective tracks from their 13 albums! I don’t know every song on their playlist, but I knew plenty of diehard fans in the audience that knew them all.

McCulloch spent the entire show sitting on his chair, so he didn’t bring his dancing shoes with him, despite singing songs very danceable songs like “Bring In the Dancing Horses”.

I felt that the band really came alive only during the encores, and yes, a triple encore, no less. During the encore(s), Ian can be seen standing up and walking about… which I felt should have been on display during the main show.

Of course, they saved all their well-known songs for the encores. “Lips Like Sugar” on the first encore. Then “The Killing Moon”, for the second encore. By now, the majority of fans have left… and finally, “Ocean Rain”. Those who stayed to the very end, there were no complaints…. in fact, they wanted more.

Talking to a true fan, they said that he once saw them in their hometown in Liverpool, and they had to wait a full five minutes before the band came back on stage (and probably by then they lost a sizeable portion of the audience). I guess the band has a history of making the fans earned it… and get rewarded for the wait.

We've been writing about the band since 2013 and saw the band in July 2019: “Ben thanked the audience and knew the differences between St Paul and its rival, Minneapolis. The group also mentioned how much they enjoy St Paul, even though they confessed they played the 7th Street Entry (Minneapolis) a “bunch of times”.”

Cayucas's latest album Blue Summer came out in 2020, but their newest single "Sayulita" came out last in August 2022.

Liverpool’s Echo & the Bunnymen will be sailing the “Seven Seas” in 2022.

I came late to the party for Echo & the Bunnymen, as I didn’t discover the band until singer Ian McCulloch went solo in the late 80s (I still have his CDs). Of course, after hearing Echo & the Bunnymen’s single, “The Killing Moon”, you knew why the band was special.

Funny enough, years later, the cult film Donnie Darko made me love the band again.

Update: Just announced Cayucas to open.

French indie pop band Phoenix will be headlining the Palace Theatre this Sep 6th. The band is best known for their hit singles, “If I Ever Feel Better” and “Lisztomania”, as well as “Too Young”.

Porches to open. We last saw Porches in Feb 2018 and noted, “ It’s been two years since we’ve seen Porches (in September 2016 and April 2016), and I can tell you that the band has really tightened up their performance and stage presence... thanks to the fact that band leader Aaron Maine kept mostly the same live band, including Cameron Wisch, Seiya Jewell, Dan English, and Maya Laner. Maine played it cool, but you can tell that he was pretty happy about the sold out show. Minneapolis is still “the best”, even with the snow storm taking place outside.”

You all know our love for The Joy Formidable since we wrote about them in July 2008: “Here's a band that I see a lot of potential in, The Joy Formidable.”

We’ve since seen the band multiple times, the last being in Nov 2018, where we noted, “After a two year-absent, the band returned to the Twin Cities, headlining and selling out the Turf Club in St Paul on Friday night. It was nice to see the band at a small “pub gig” again. Bassist Rhydian Dafydd and singer “Ritzy” seemed really loose and making faces as they launched into “This Ladder Is Ours”. Even the drummer would occasionally rise from his seat to whip the audience into a deserving frenzy. Seeing the band this animated vs their button-down-proper gig in 2016, was a much better experience.”

The band is currently on tour in support of their new album Into the Blue.

The Afghan Whigs are on tour in support of their upcoming album How Do You Burn? (set for release on September 9, 2022 via Royal Cream/BMG). The North American tour will start at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on Sept 9th, the day the record drops.

We last saw them in at First Avenue in Sep 2017 and said, “No warnings were given as to the sheer volume level the band played at for their ninety-minute set, though most fans knew better and came prepared. An empty space was to singer Greg Dulli’s left, the one usually filled by guitarist Dave Rosser, who lost his cancer battle in June.”

The group was originally started by Christian Nelson and Eddie Chisham (songwriting, vocals, guitar, keys), but later joined by Seth Lemmon (bass) and Berin Joseph (drums).

It’s a long time coming, but this show was originally scheduled for Oct 12, 2021, before it was cancelled due to COVID. The rescheduled date for March 23rd, 2022 was also cancelled at the last minute.

Third time’s the charm? The show will finally take place at First Avenue this September 11th, with original opening acts I Speak Machine (experimental music act and audio-visual project of musician Tara Busch) and DJ Jake Rudh.

I came late to the party for Echo & the Bunnymen, as I didn’t discover the band until singer Ian McCulloch went solo in the late 80s (I still have his CDs). Of course, after hearing Echo & the Bunnymen’s single, “The Killing Moon”, you knew why the band was special.

Funny enough, years later, the cult film Donnie Darko made me love the band again.

California band Cayucas headlined the Turf Club in St Paul on Sunday, July 7.

Opening the show was Lucid VanGuard. Taking the stage was Karl Remus on vocals/guitars, Warren Thomas Fenzi on drums, Bailey Cogan (aka 26 Bats!) on keys, Christian Wheeler on bass, Daniel “Chavo” Chavez on trumpet … and for this live performance, they’re joined by Dave on guitars (I didn’t catch the last name when they were introducing the band near the end of their set). The group is part of the record label/collective Kremblems.

Lucid VanGuard’s latest release is “Sound of Nature”, and musically, it suggests the band’s music is more natural and atmospheric than typical pop/rock groups. After thanking the audience for listening, the band ended their set with “Angelina”.

Look for Lucid Vanguard at Laughing Sun Brewing in North Dakota on July 13, Mortimers in Minneapolis on July 26 (with get thee to The Nunnery), and for Rocktober: White Wall Sessions in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on October 4th.

We’ve been writing about Cayucas since 2013… which was early in the group’s formation. The band, led by twin brothers Zach Yudin and Ben Yudin, signed with Secretly Canadian in 2012 and released their debut Bigfoot. The record did incredibly well with critics, particularly Filter and the Guardian (who said the record was “endless summer pop”).

Currently, the Santa Monica group is touring in support of their new album Real Life (The Van Records). The group stopped by the Turf Club in St Paul as part of their tour. Ben thanked the audience and knew the differences between St Paul and its rival, Minneapolis. The group also mentioned how much they enjoy St Paul, even though they confessed they played the 7th Street Entry (Minneapolis) a “bunch of times”.

Diehard fans loved the classic singles (“East Coast Girl”, “High School Lover”), but those only came in the later half of their set. Most of their early songs consisted of Real Life songs - including new hit single “Jessica WJ”. The new song is described as “tropical-pop”, and already had over 1.5 million streams on Spotify.

Cayucas’ latest Real Life is out now via Park The Van Records, and the album is said to be about nostalgia. Guitarist Ben Yudin said, “Looking back is on one of our favorite things to talk about. We’re just fascinated by the constant evolution of people, friends from high school and college. It makes for great lyrics and subject matter.”

Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Sam Valdez and Minneapolis-based Lucid Vanguard to open. We last heard about Valdez when they announced her debut EP Mirage via Nevado Music in June 2018.

We are big fans of Veruca Salt... so when we first heard about their reformation last March 2014 via a Record Store Day news, we've been keeping a very close eye on the band.

Of course, we were there to cover their reunion tour at Varsity Theater in Minneapolis on (09 July 2014) and Theatre of Living Arts in Philadelphia (22 Jul 2014), and eagerly looking forward to their return to Minneapolis at the Cedar Cultural Center, next Thursday, July 23rd, 2015.

While last year's tour had only a handful of T-Shirts and 7" single, this time around, the group has a brand new album called Ghost Notes (released last Friday, July 10th, via El Camino Records). We are assuming they will be previewing some of the new songs, so we can't wait to hear the new cuts.

Broken Bells w/ Cayucas

Broken Bells, the project of duo Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) and Shins frontman James Mercer is back from hiatus and on the road, returning in support of their second album, After the Disco (Columbia Records), featuring the single “Holding On For Life.” Expect most of both albums to be played and some trippy accompanying visuals, to ensue.

Cayucas, an indie pop band from the Santa Monica area, featuring Zach Yudin, his twin brother Ben Yudin on bass, Christian Koons on Guitar, and Casey Wojtalewicz on drums opens the show, in support of last fall’s Bigfoot (Secretly Canadian Records) and was last seen in these parts opening for Ra Ra Riot late last year.

Supermodels at Myth? Not exactly...

Los Angeles threesome Foster the People is back with their “Pumped Up Kicks” follow-up, Supermodel (Columbia Records) and an upcoming show at Myth in suburban Maplewood, MN.  The album was produced by UK producer-of-the-moment Paul Epworth, who has manned the boards for the latest from the likes of Adele, Paul McCartney, and Coldplay, with “Best Friend” as the album’s newest single.

Another trio, Sweden’s NONONO opens the show, consisting of production team Astma & Rocwell and singer Stina Wäppling and are in support of their first full-length, We Are Only What We Feel (Warner Music)

It's sold-out Tuesday apparently...

I'm already committed to covering Cibo Matto at the now-sold-out show at the Turf Club. As you know, I saw the band in 1999 and am looking forward to seeing how the band has grown over the years.

Also sold out is Bob Mould's show at The Theatre At The Woman's Club... so that leaves Kodaline at First Avenue. I believe their original venue (7th Street Entry) also sold out, so the venue had to upgrade Kodaline to the much larger capacity main room at First Avenue. That's like 1,500 capacity vs 7th Street's tiny 250. The confusing-band name LP is set to open the show.

We wanted to cover Diane Birch last year (I've previously seen her at SXSW and loved her), but she canceled her appearance at the last minute to take a better opportunity with the Tonight Show! Good for her, I would have done the same things if I were in her shoes.

So, Birch is returning to Minneapolis next week, under the Andrew Belle/Diane Birch tour... and of course, like so many bands touring right now, it's to coincide with SXSW 2014 in Austin, Texas. Please check with each band's website for finalized SXSW schedule as they often change.

Birch is touring in support of her new album Speak a Little Louder, while Andrew Belle is touring for Black Bear.

Cayucas is once again touring, and yes, SXSW time of the year. They will likely showcase some of their songs from their debut LP Bigfoot, released on Secretly Canadian. I haven't receive any communication with them for a while now (since 09/2013, so maybe Secretly Canadian secretly hates me). They're currently on tour with Young the Giant, but will be headlining their own tour starting March 1st.

Bonzie, aka 18-year-old Chicagoan Nina Ferraro, is set to open up the 7th Street Entry show.

Caveman's first release "Coco Beware" reached my ears in early 2012 and I knew from that point on that they'd not only be a personal favorite of mine, but affect other people similarly. I got the chance to see them a month or so after hearing it and their live show did not disappoint. I caught them at the Urban Lounge in Salt Lake City, UT and I was maybe only one of 20 others at the show. Despite the disappointing attendance, their live show solidified my enthusiasm about them and their unique sound.

Since that show, they have released a new album that is titled simply "Caveman". It continues with their mellow, melodic and pretty brand of indie rock that never gets old to my ears. It seems to perfectly pick up where "Coco Beware" left off and boost them on their upward trajectory into fame. The album has had only positive reviews and you can experience their songs live at the Fine Line Music Cafe on June 29, in support of the popular band Rogue Wave.

Man or Astro-Man? I really love that name, even though it sounds dumb. I've seen the band name in the 90s but haven't seen it around for a while. That's probably because their last album, a tour-only album called A Spectrum of Finite Scale was twelve years ago. The Alabama surf band is back with Defcon 5...4...3...2...1 (coming out on June 18, 2013, on Communicating Vessels/Chunklet) and will be heading out on tour in support of it.

I have been a huge fan of Christopher Owens' previously fronted band, Girls, since they broke out in public acclaim in 2008. I was really bummed a year ago when I learned they broke up, but hopeful when he announced he was going to be writing songs on his own. Fast forward six months with the release of Owens' "Lysandre". His sound shifted completely from Girls, which tended to lean more towards edgy, surfy 70s style rock. "Lysandre" has a more polished sound overall, including more subdued vocals from Owens' and the addition of horn instruments, etc. Overall, it seems to suit his shift to solo songwriting and I am excited to see him perform his new songs at Icehouse in Minneapolis on June 11th.

Christopher Owens is touring in support of "Lysandre", a collection of songs about a lover he met while on tour with Girls in 2008. The songs are heartfelt and evocative; really showcasing his ability to write personal lyrics without them coming off as cheap or silly. He will perform the songs solo on an acoustic guitar, and I imagine the night will be quite intimate.

Tickets for the show are $15 (both in advance and day of) and the show starts at 10 pm. You'll want to get tickets ahead of time, as space at Icehouse can be a bit limited. Find tickets here.

"East Coast Girl" is the new song and video from Cayucas, previously known as Oregon Bike Trails. The video premiered today (05/30) on NYLON.

"East Coast Girl" video directed by Steven Andrew Garcia, talks about the music and his work, "Cayucas have a dynamic that just works. Zach's a great songwriter and their talent really shines through on the new album. We all took a road trip to San Luis Obispo, stayed at a hotel together, and worked out one shot at a time."

The song is taken from Cayucas' debut album, Bigfoot, which came out last month on Secretly Canadian. All of the critics thinks it's a great "summer" soundtrack, for example: AllMusic praised it as "a soundtrack to shared memories of summer," FILTER called it "should be added to your playlist of summer hits immediately," and The Guardian said, "endless summer pop." Who can argue with that?

You can check out the pop melodies for yourself when you see them on tour - chances are they are stopping by your city.
