If there is a place to be, it’s at Heart to Gold’s very first headlining show at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on December 6th. This is right before the band heads out on a national tour with Born Without Bones (which starts 12/08 in New Jersey).

The sold-out 7th Street Entry show will feature three local support acts: Gramma, killusonline and Lapdogs.

We’ve mentioned the band five times in various concert listing, but have never seen them live… perhaps that’ll change this December 6th.

Exister is the new album from The Soft Moon. The record came out in September via Sacred Bones Records.

“The whole point of this record was to share every emotion that I feel,” says The Soft Moon’s Luis Vasquez. “No two songs are the same. It’s about existing in the world as a human being and experiencing many emotions and experiences throughout life.”

The Soft Moon will be promoting the new record through a winter tour, stopping by the Fine Line in Minneapolis on December 6th.

No surprise, but The Lemonheads recently sold out the UK and Ireland tour, as they perform It's A Shame About Ray in its entirety for the 30th anniversary of its release.

With the North American dates about to begin on November 17th, tickets are selling out fast.

We last saw The Lemonheads in May 2019 and said, “As you know, I first came to being The Lemonheads fan around the time they were promoting It's a Shame About Ray with its title track as single in 1992. They were featured on MTV’s 120 Minutes, but frontsman Evan Dando seemed more popular in the UK (I hate to say it, but for a time, it just felt like the Lemonheads were ignoring the USA).”

Midwestern multi-talented tour de force Lissie is touring in support of her Americana-tinged indie folk album Carving Canyons (Lionboy Records). The tour ends at First Avenue in Minneapolis on December 10th, 2022.

Lissie recently shared Morgan Page remix of “Night Moves”. The two previously collaborated on Page’s track “The Longest Road,” which subsequently amassed 40 million streams after a remix courtesy of Deadmau5.

We caught Lissie in Nov 2013 and said, “The comparisons are already in place for rock/folk/blues singer Lissie (nee Elisabeth Maurus) – looks like Jewel, sounds like Stevie Nicks with the raspy twinge of Janis Joplin; but the truth is this Rock Island, IL native is forging her own individual and distinctive career path through solid songs, endless touring, and an ever-growing loyal fan base.”

Portland’s finest Modest Mouse is returning to the area at the Palace Theatre, in St Paul, on December 10, 2022. The group is celebrating their 25th anniversary of their seminal album The Lonesome Crowded West (originally released on November 18, 1997 on Up Records).

We caught them in March 2022 and wrote, “It’s hard but wonderful to believe that Modest Mouse has been a band for thirty years now, (formed in Washington state in 1992) and has continued to broaden its sound and manage to still challenge its listeners. The newest album is the universally-acclaimed The Golden Casket from last year, but last year also marked the departures of two longtime members, signaling even more evolution is yet to come.”

Welsh-band Mclusky (often stylized as mclusky), returns to North America for the first time in 18 years for a special 2022 American tour.

The band broke up in 2005, but reformed as Mclusky* (asterisk in reference to missing members) to play The Garage in London on 3 December 2015 to raise money for cancer research.

To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Mclusky Do Dallas, the band will play the Turf Club in St Paul on December 10, 2022.

Philadelphia’s Mannequin Pussy will be heading out on the post-pandemic tour to promote their album Perfect from Epitaph Records. Ironically, pussy could mean pussycat, but the band has a dog on the cover artwork.

We caught the band in October 2017, opening up for Japanese Breakfast. We noted that their brief 30-min set had a “burst of punk rock” and ended their set with Japanese Breakfast’s touring guitarist helping them play on the song finale.

Guess what ? They’re once again Japanese Breakfast’s touring support until August. In September, they’ll be headlining the tour.

Ever since we saw Vintage Trouble at the Nether Bar in Minneapolis in Mar 2013, we knew the band was special: “Beginning with the One/Two punch of 'Hard Times (They are Coming)' and 'Blues Hand Me Down', the crowd was immediately in a frenzy; asked all evening to call-and-respond, clap along, move front to back, and generally become a part of the show.”

The rock/soulful blues/R&B group is returning to the Twin Cities area this Wednesday, December 4th, at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall, as part of their Chapter II World Tour.

Singer Bradley Walden was completely out of control in all of the right ways. He started the show by jumping into the modest crowd where he proceeds to roll around on the ground, get piggy back rides from random people in the crowd, good god this guy was everywhere. Even when he was on stage he was insane. He would crawl behind the drum set and then jump over the whole kit... drummer and all. It was impossible to take your eyes off of Bradley because you wanted to know what he was going to do next.”

To the average life-long American, these are strange times. To an immigrant journeying to the “land of opportunity” for the American Dream, these are even stranger times--

And that partial outside-looking-in viewpoint is the basis of Minneapolis-based (by way of Nairobi, Kenya) folk singer-songwriter J.S. Ondara’s debut full-length Tales of America (Verve Forecast Records), playing a long-sold-out show at the 7^th Street Entry as he returned to his adopted hometown, for his first proper local headlining gig.

The evening opened with a forty minute set from Stratford, ONT blues folk singer/songwriter Cat Clyde, in support of debut full-length Ivory Castenets and more recent singles, ‘Anymore’ and ‘All the Black’.

The self-taught musician held the attentive audience enraptured as she revealed “I’m about to tell you something... but don’t spread it around – you’re the best audience so far”. Taking classic song structures and applying her own more modern spin on them, the Canadian artist came off as humble, talented, and very musically honest.

With an old-style mic adorned with the new album’s title and three other mics surrounding him, J.S. Ondara took to the stage solo in the suit and brown hat from his album’s cover, for a surprisingly long 105min headlining set featuring the entire album played and peppered with several stories along the way.

Ondara came to the country from his native Kenya in 2013 after discovering his love of folk music and being astonished to find that ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’ was not a Guns n’ Roses original, but rather from a Midwest troubadour named Bob Dylan. When his green card was granted and he needed a specific destination, he looked again to his folk influence and picked Minneapolis (where an aunt had also recently settled), and soon began learning guitar and playing shows as Jay Smart.

Years of gigging in the region’s coffeehouse circuit and open mic nights (similar in training to Suzanne Vega and Tracy Chapman) and uploading his music, it caught the eye and ear of Mike (Candy Butchers) Viola who signed and produced the musician on the legendary Verve label. In addition to early Freewheelin’-era Dylan, Ondara counts Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks and Jeff Buckley as his main influences.

“I was just fooling around for a bit” Ondara said, opening with a loose version of ‘American Dream’ with its lyric, “Well the gold and the silver you're searching is hidden out there underground “, “...but it’s my hometown, I can do that”, he added. 

Ondara’s songs are in the true folk tradition- often sad, a reflection of the times, and sparse like an open field, delivered with a lilting British-African accented voice, often lifting to falsetto.

He’s already envisioned a music video for his song, ‘Give Me a Moment’, about being distracted by technology despite the beauty around us, and proceeded to describe the shot-by-shot breakdown. 

Looking out, Ondara mentioned how he could see everyone clearly in the small venue, comparing it to the regular social gatherings at his grandmother’s house (“except everyone here is white”, to laughter).

After playing ‘Lebanon’, Ondara confessed he had to explain the lyric “I shan’t be like Canada” writing it at a time when he never dreamed of traveling there to play, and ‘Turkish Bandana’ was sung acapella, a throwback to his early method of songwriting in Kenya, when he couldn’t afford a guitar but was still determined to set his writings and poetry to music.

Seeing Seattle singer-songwriter Noah Gundersen at the Cedar as his first concert helped re-kindle his musical dream, writing ‘Master O’Connor’ soon after, and on his own ‘God Bless America’ he asks, “Will you let me in, or are you at capacity”, something many immigrants are still asking currently.

“It’s quite a rich time to be a folksinger, there’s so much content...” Ondara commented, “...every tweet is a bloody folk song” before going into ‘Days of Insanity. The main set would end with a song a young Ondara would dance to at age seven, not really understanding the theme or lyrics, turning ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ inside out and apart, into a cover version unlike any other.

Rapt attention (the most compelled I’ve seen an Entry audience in some time) gave way to loud applause, goading Ondara back for an encore that was supposed to be a single song (“I only have one album out, guys”, he joked). 

Caving into crowd requests, he began with ‘Mother Christmas’ an older song about being homesick and missing his mother over the holiday, then finished fittingly with ‘Saying Goodbye’ in which he conducted the audience to sing the song’s chorus first as a whisper, rising to as loud as possible.

In these days of border closings, travel bans, and forced detentions, the American Dream still lives, through the eyes of a singer-songwriter like J.S. Ondara who creatively reminds us this country exists only as the aggregated result of the immigrants that the great majority of us, or our ancestors, are.

The Candles will join their long-time collaborator on the tour this June. Their latest album Matter + Spirit came out December 16, 2016 on The End Records. Thanks to their strong single ‘Move Along’, the band racked up over 657K Spotify streams.

The band will continue to the tour to Europe with Jones for the July leg of the tour, including shows in France, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden.

06/01/17 Not surprised that Pwr Bttm canceled their appearance at Triple Rock Social Club. You see, earlier this month (May 2017), one half of the duo Ben Hopkins was accused with sexual assault by an anonymous woman. This quickly led to the band being dropped by Father/Daughter Records, and the band was forced to cancel their tour to get to the, er, bottom of this.

Hopkins responded, “What has transpired over the past several days has been emotionally overwhelming and difficult to comprehend. Last Thursday, I learned that an anonymous individual had made an allegation of sexual assault against me. This allegation was devastating to me as it is contrary to the intentional way I seek to interact with those around me. As I digested the allegations, I tried to figure out who the individual might be so that I could try to reconcile what I had read with my memory of any particular sexual interaction. I’ve waited to respond to the Jezebel article because the statements made about me by the anonymous source did not line up with any sexual experience I have ever had.” He figured out who it was and said that he believed “our interactions to be fully consensual” and “we continued to exchange texts, including as recently as March of this year. I had no indication before last week that she had any concerns about our interaction.”

Her recent offering, Over and Even, came out in September and has already cast its spell over much of the music world.
