Helado Negro is returning to touring this year, in support of his recent album Far In (4AD).

We saw Helado Negro in Feb 2019 and said, “The show started with Helado Negro (stagename for Roberto Carlos Lange), playing as a trio with violinist/multi-instrumentalist Angela Morris and saxophone player Nathaniel Morgan. Each person wore a color, Morris in red, Lange in yellow, and Morgan in blue. The stage lighting also corresponded with each section of the stage, giving off a sense that it wasn’t just a concert, but also as an art piece.”

It’s been many years since we saw Cut Copy. We last saw them in June 2014 and wrote, “The good loud was then stepping into the Mainroom at First Avenue in Minneapolis for a pounding, electro throb beat to a packed house of jumping and smiling fans – Cut/Copy was bringing the house down. The Australian synth-pop/indietronica four-piece is back on the road in support of their latest, Free Your Mind (Modular Recordings), which was co-helmed by Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev producer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev) and the joy they brought to their 85 min. performance, was immediately infectious to a crowd more than willing to free their mind… and everything else.”

The GRAMMY-nominated, ARIA award-winning electronic, indie-dance act, like so many other bands, were locked down since 2020… so they are really looking forward to coming back this year, starting this April 2022. Minneapolis is on their tour itinerary - they’ll be stopping by May 12th at First Avenue.

We caught Lorna Shore in Mar 2016 and wrote, “Lorna Shore was the show stealer of last night. They're always the show stealer. Their music is heavy and polished. Singer Tom Barber has a voice that makes you stop dead in your tracks. It's one of those voices that you would swear could only be done on a recording, not in a live setting. It's too extreme and harsh.”

Melbourne’s Amyl & the Sniffers just made their US television debut on Late Night with Seth Meyers earlier this week. The band played “Hertz” off of their sophomore album, Comfort To Me (ATO Records/Rough Trade). Based on the massive reception, the song really hertz so good.

Their US tour have sold out, or fast on selling out, so good luck if you are trying to score a ticket.

We previously caught them in 2015 and wrote, “Make Some Room is not only the title of the recent EP from The Suffers (on Rhyme and Reason Records), but was also the edict as the band and venue’s personnel tried to clear enough stage space for all ten members. With percussionists and guitarists wedged in back, and the horn section, keys and bass up front, the band managed to make it work and make the audience work a little too, during their hour-long set.”

The "Straight Outta Hell" tour, sponsored by BlackCraft Cult Clothing, came to The Cabooze in Minneapolis on Thursday night and was greeted by hundreds of hungry metal fans.

Oceano

The show started off with a bang and the band that pretty much stole the whole show. Oceano may have only had a twenty minute set but they definitely had me stuck where I was with my eyes glued to the stage. These guys are very much a deathcore band but the way they mix elements of grindcore, metalcore, and even black metal to create something extremely unique and amazing and had the crowd wanting more.

Adam Warren, the singer, is one of the most powerful and consistent singers I've seen in a long while. This guy was up on that stage doing his thing regardless of what the crowd was doing. It didn't matter that the crowd seemed to be conserving their energy for the other three acts, Adam was going crazy on stage and I'm pretty sure there wasn't a single point during their set that he was standing still. His vocals, even with all of the movement, never faltered. They were powerful throughout the set and really made these guys stand out.

Carnifex

Oceano was followed by the heavy hitting deathcore band, Carnifex, from San Diego, CA. These guys seem to be a favorite among the Minnesota metal scene and last night was proof as to why. These guys have an unrelenting live show. They get the crowd moving through out their set of blast beats and intense vocals.

Carnifex seemed to focus on songs from their newest album Slow Death which was released in August of this year but they didn't forget that there were fans in the crowd that have been with the band since their inception in 2005. They played songs off of old albums and the crowd seemed to enjoy them just as much as the new material.

Whitechapel

Up next was Whitechapel. Personally, I love these guys and was super happy to have them back in the Twin Cities after going a while without a visit from them. Thursday night was the first time they had been in town since releasing their newest album, Mark of the Blade, in June of this year. This album was met with a lot of criticism because it was the first album from this band where singer Phil Bozeman, who is known for his extreme vocal style, had clean vocals. On all of the previous releases, Bozeman's intense and dark vocals were what drew many fans into the band.

The softer songs on the new album didn't stop Whitechapel from playing through old songs that got the crowd pushed and shoved their way through. It was interesting to see how the crowd reacted when the band played through one of the new songs with a much calmer feeling to it. It was obvious that the crowd was being respectful and watching the band but they stood still and the energy in the venue instantly dropped. As fast as the energy dropped, it came right back when the band played their signature, fast and heavy metalcore anthems.

Suicide Silence proved just why they are the co-headliners this time around. They came out on the stage full of power and energy and blew the crowd away.

It seems like just yesterday that the future of Suicide Silence seemed a bit blurry as the world was mourning the untimely death of Mitch Lucker, the singer. They proved on Thursday night that they aren't going anywhere and, as big of a blow as it was to lose Lucker, they got the best replacement they could and they are still turning heads and making waves in the scene.

Vocal duties are now done by Hernan "Eddie" Hermida, formally of All Shall Perish. Hermida does an amazing job of keeping the live show high energy. The way his voice can switch from pig squeals to guttural growls is more than jaw dropping and when you figure out that he's doing that while running from side to side of the stage, it's quite amazing.

The band hasn't released a full length since their most recent release You Can't Stop Me which came out in 2014 but that didn't stop their set from feeling fresh. Everything about the set was clean and you could tell that they are up to something because, compared to the last couple of times they have been in the Twin Cities, everything just seemed much more polished.

Suicide Silence has a new album due out early next year.

One of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen was Beats Antique in 2013 (see look at the photos!) because the band had gotten a massive flush of cash from a successful Kickstarter campaign to build one of the most impressive stage via Obscura Digital.

The band is back, this time in support of their new album Shadowbox. I’m not sure if they will continue using the Obscura Digital setup, but whatever they decide to do for this upcoming tour, it will be nothing short of amazing.

Philadelphia electro jazz duo Marian Hill will be headlining First Avenue’s mainstage this Thursday, October 6th, this is quite an upgrade from their previous appearance at the sold out 7th Street Entry in October 2015, which we described as “The tiny 7th Street Entry venue was completely packed with young college students, in love with everything they've heard from Marian Hill. It was incredible to watch the entire audience grinding and swaying to their saxophone-heavy songs... which has been written is described as "sax-ual" music. I would also add in a little dubstep, grime, and electronica.”

They would have played longer at the 7th Street Entry show, but they actually ran out of songs... hopefully with their debut album Act One out now, they’ll be able to properly play a longer set.

Vérité will be one of the openers. We saw Verite (aka Kelsey Byrne) in May 2016 and noted she wrote “heartfelt electropop songs”.

Also on the bill is electropop trio Shaed, featuring twin brothers Max and Spencer Ernst and singer Chelsea Lee. The band just released their six-track debut EP Just Wanna See via Photo Finish Records.

California’s Suicide Silence is co-headlining this 2016 with Knoxville’s Whitechapel. The so-named “Straight Outta Hell” tour is sponsored by BlackCraft Cult Clothing.

We previously written about the latter band was named after, “Jack the Ripper and the Whitechapel district in London.”

Whitechapel’s latest Mark of the Blade is out now on Metal Blade Records, an album which has “evolved naturally” according to guitarist Alex Wade: “At this point in our career and as we grow older, we are taking a more open-minded approach to creating our music, allowing what we think sounds good to evolve naturally, rather than to just write what is expected of us.”

Carnifex's all-ages show at the Amsterdam Bar and Hall in St Paul last Monday night (October 19th) had an amazing line-up.

It was loud, it was fast, it was angry, it was refreshing. I know some people may think this kind of music is complete garbage. Majority of people just don't get it. It just sounds like incoherent yelling with loud instruments behind it. I'll be the first to admit that it's loud and obnoxious but for some reason, I find peace in it and feel like I'm home when in the middle of it.

Lorna Shore

I have to be honest. I'm not a huge fan of any of the bands that played last night. I had seen Lorna Shore before and knew they slayed it live. I'm good friends with the guys in Buried Above Ground. Other than that, my expectations were low. I really need to stop that.

Every single band last night blew me away. The sound was on point. Each band was as heavy as the last and the energy of the bands never faltered. Because of this, the energy of the crowd was also sky high throughout the night. This made the show that much more enjoyable to watch.

I truly love watching people in a mosh pit. I love to see different styles of moshing and the new innovations are always interesting. There was a decent amount of people at the show last night but it was still super easy to see in the pit and I got to see it all. There was everything from your hardcore stompers to your good old fashioned metal moshers. Don't know the difference between the two? Maybe it's for the best.

The Last Ten Seconds of Life

Even when everything stopped after a kid got knocked out cold during The Last Ten Seconds of Life's set, as soon as he was carried out of the pit by complete strangers, the energy came right back up as high as it was before. It didn't scare people away, it didn't make people want to leave. Stuff like that is bound to happen and you just do your best to take care of those who get hurt and then go right back to what you were doing.

Not only was the pit fun to watch, the musicians were fun to watch as well. Everyone on stage was full of energy and kept the crowd engaged whether you were in the pit or trying your best to avoid it. Although majority of the music was the same (and I mean that in the best way) each band seemed to have a different way of interacting with the crowd. Whether it was yelling at them to get moving, or expressing gratitude for coming out on a Monday night to see them, each band had nothing but praise for the Minnesota scene and that, right there, is why I do what I do. This scene is truly like none other in the country and I am so, so, so happy to be a part of it.

Buried Above Ground

I cannot stress enough how awesome it is to see my friends on stage doing what they do best. DJ and Eric from Buried Above Ground (formerly Thee Massacre) are some good friends of mine and it was so nice to see the crowd get so into their set. They brought up members of Immoralis and Portraits of War to help them with a couple of covers in their set which just promoted the idea of family. Keep your eyes on Buried Above Ground. There are huge and exciting things coming for this band and you won't want to be left behind.

All of the touring bands were great last night and seemed to get the amount of respect that they deserved. It didn't matter if you liked their band or not, everyone seemed to pay attention to either the stage or the pit and everyone cheered and clapped when songs were done. It didn't matter that these bands were from out of state, they were all members of our family last night.
