We test drove the “highway” early--
Kansas City was one of the album pre-release stops for Los Angeles electro/dream band CANNONS, previewing tracks from their upcoming full-length, Heartbeat Highway, and the band made a triumphant sold-out return to The Truman, a venue they were an opening act at, less than two years prior.
===
The evening got started with a fun half-hour set from Austin TX pop/neon noir duo Jane Leo, whose name sounds like a single person but is actually composed of the pair Jane Ellen Bryant and Daniel Leopold, in town for the first time, and in support of their self-titled debut release (on Native Fiction Records/MARS Group).
Leopold plays guitar and sports the best 70’s mustache and accompanying sunglasses we’ve seen in a while, while the cute Bryant was on keyboards (played mostly with only her right hand), in primary colored activewear. They play a simplistic, retro 808 styled beat-blend of electro-pop. From the opening “our Love” across to newest single, “Wow” the crowd was generally very receptive, dancing and clapping along.

Portland duo (expanded to a trio live) New Constellations was up next, with a solid forty-five-minute set, in support of a handful of singles out- on tour for their very first time. Singer Harlee Case was positively giddy about playing live and guitarist Josh Smith happily smiled along.
Their blend of catchy electro-pop seems polished and realized- maybe the result of collaboration since their early teens and for the following fifteen years, finally debuting a first single, 2021’s “Hot Blooded” (8 million+ spins on Spotify and counting) that resonates whether on a dancefloor or driving a lonely road at night.
“Don’t Let Your Dreams Die” is the duo’s favorite song to play, with Case considering it their most danceable song, despite its slower tempo beginning. Case’s vocals have an impressive range and Smith’s music can rotate from a calm chill to club banging throb. The set ended with highlight, “Do What You Want”, crafted during the uncertainty of the pandemic lockdown about realizing the freedom and relief that comes with making your own choices, no matter what others may think. We think there are brighter stars in the future of New Constellations.

With the walk-on intro music of Tina Turner, Los Angeles electro/dream pop trio CANNONS (stylized in all caps) confidently strode to the stage for their eighty-minute headlining set, in support and road-testing songs of their highly anticipated album Heartbeat Highway (on Columbia Records/Sony Music, release date still TBD).
We were immediately enamored with the trio (Michelle Joy [Lewis]- vocals; Ryan Clapham- lead guitar; Paul Davis- keys/guitar, and adding Ben Hilzinger- drums) when we saw them in an opening slot at this same venue in late 2021, watched them as they sold out headlining the next year in nearby Lawrence, and couldn’t be more pleased to see them again headline and sell out, this time in Kansas City, ahead of the new record and with so many first-time fans in the audience.
The group has become even more confident with their stage presence and refined in their sound, after ten years together and three full-length albums (plus four EPs) under their belt, with the follow up to breakthrough record Fever Dream (2022) due out shortly.
Singer Joy is a visual showstopper as always, this night dressed in frilly black, which proved a striking contrast to her platinum blonde hair and moved as she moved, spinning and twirling with every instrumental break. The lighting this time out, was more muted and sublime, splashes of pinks, oranges, and star patterns making for a more dimly lit presentation than previous, that also encouraged more attention to the songs themselves.
Starting off with 2019’s “Shadows”, the sonic landscape was immediately formed- a mix of subtle cloud-like numbers designed to float you away, and more grounded dance beats, made for movement and expression. “Can You Feel my Heart” was the first of several new songs previewed, a dreamy number about staying in a relationship too long, knowing you should have left earlier. “Bad Dream” followed, a radio hit from last year’s Fever Dream, which still gets regular local radio play.
“Sweeter” was the next new song, about according to Joy, “letting go and finding a way to do that” and that “no goodbyes are ever permanent”. The crowd came to even louder life during the whistle-friendly “Hurricane” with Joy singing, “I wanna take you higher, away, away…”
2022’s “Lightning” was performed acoustically and was followed by the title track of the upcoming record, an ideal driving song. The revenge song “Ruthless” (about someone Davis once knew) had the crowd singing along with its profane comeuppance chorus, and lead single from the upcoming album, “Loving You” had everyone clapping along on cue.
Following the reggae-drenched vibes of “Purple Sun”, their breakout single, “Fire For You” (which went Gold, has 250mil+ streams, and was featured on TV’s Never Have I Ever and American Horror Story) would close the main set, Joy saying “You guys are incredible!” and “Your support means everything to us” to preface the song, beaming after the positive reception of being on their first national headlining tour.
The two-song encore began with newest single, “Desire” a mid-tempo song that fits neatly into their expanding song catalog, then the band dialed it all the way back to 2015 for “Evening Star”, performing the song not illuminated by stage lights but by the flashlights on crowd members’ cell phones, and against a galaxy-patterned background.
They may originate from Los Angeles, but the heartland embraces CANNONS as well, as evidenced by their sold-out appearance in Kansas City; with a crowd composed of both longtime fans and many seeing the band for the first time live, all happy and fortunate to be able to be able to take that early drive on their Heartbeat Highway.
