To celebrate, here is a Flashback article on Koo Koo Kanga Roo at the Bedlam Theater in August 2010. The show was booked as a going away party for Brody, who was leaving for New Orleans. In typical Brody fashion, he was late to his own going away show.

Brody's finale show started really late on a Sunday. Showing up a little early, I overhear that the bartender wasn't even told there was supposed to be a show that night. It didn't matter, I don't think the staff cared much, since the Bedlam Theatre was going out of business fairly soon. Shame really, because they have a great balcony view.

Between Lara, Kate, and I, we were mostly just there to say bye to Brody, so we didn't want to stay that long. We knew for sure, we were going to see Koo Koo Kanga Roo, after I convinced them that these guys are actually pretty fun rap for kids.

The last time I saw Koo Koo, they seemed more geared for children, especially with the "follow along" board and slides. They still have a large and long setup time (back drop, equipment, ladder?, merch, and the koo koo kamera). They did some favorites like "Rollin in the Minivan", "AOA", "Shake Yo Foot" and "LMNOP", but there were definitely some new songs I hadn't heard before. They're all pretty simplistic, but that's part of the beauty of getting everyone to listen and sing along.

One thing about Koo Koo, is that they require a large interaction of the audience, so I would really hate to see these guys in front of non-participating or extra-shy watchers. They are always fun to watch and play along, so if you get a chance to see these guys, I highly recommend it. Local rap legends Brother Ali and Ant co-headlined First Avenue on Sunday night. Openers were Dee-1 and MaLLy.

The Land of 10,000 Lakes finest enchanted us with a unique blend of beats and rhymes. Ant (aka Anthony Davis) the other half of the world famous and Minnesota based artist Atmosphere co-headlined the evening with a rich blend of beats, samples, on the turntables. The crowd was pumping and was moving and grooving for his whole set.

Ant’s new release is due out Jan. 24th 2005, titled Collection of Sounds Vol. 3. He dropped two of his singles from his upcoming release, “Welcome Back”, and “Perfection”. It would have been nice to have Atmosphere and Slug in the building but was a nice mix of instrumentals.

Brother Ali closed out the night with a vengeance. After a 5-year hiatus not playing First Avenue, it was nice to have the legend back. Brother Ali’s rap flow is like none other and always nice to understand and dissect all his lyrics. Old school rap like Jurassic 5 and De la Soul were some of my favorites back in the day and Ali Douglas Newman brings that same flavor.

He played a bunch of his hits including “Forest Whitiker” and “Uncle Sam Goddamn”. Producer Ant was out on set for the majority of the show as he helped produce and mix on all the tracks on Brother Ali’s upcoming February release. Brother Ali’s new release titled "Satisfied Soul" comes out 2/14/2025. My favorite track has to be “The Counts”!

Australian duo Hockey Dad (Zach Stephenson and Billy Fleming) is co-headlining a tour with Minnesota’s Remo Drive. They played the Amsterdam Bar and Hall, in St Paul, with Chicago-born LA-based singer-songwriter Tatiana Hazel as opener.

Zach and Billy is enjoying their time in the USA, and they’re spending all their time playing Skeeball and pinball, apparently.

Hockey Dad’s album Rebuild Repeat is out now. The band added, “It’s been too long between drinks and we are super excited to be releasing our new record Rebuild Repeat! This album reflects its own title in so many ways. We tried to approach the making of this record in a totally different way. Respecting the old ways of HD whilst trying to find new ways to keep ourselves and all of you entertained.”

Montreal’s Godspeed You! Black Emperor recently headlined the Palace Theatre, in St Paul, in support of their latest album No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead. Their name, especially with that new album title, really need to belong to an update to our …And You Will Know Us by the Ridiculously Long Band Name and Other Obnoxious Idiosyncratic Moniker article.

Alan Sparhawk (of Low) opened the show. He’ll be playing with them until November 24, 2024 (however Kee Avil was announced as support in New York).

We previously saw Godspeed in Feb 2016 and wrote, “The Canadian, nine-piece, post-rock collective took over the stage with all of their amps, cords and pedal boards. They formed a circle on the stage and started playing their songs without even acknowledging the crowd. There were no vocal microphones set up for them to introduce themselves but judging by the overly excited crowd, they didn't need an introduction. The music lulled me into a different world full of pillows and memory foam but I wasn't sleepy like I have been at other shows like this. It sounded like many of the other bands in this genre that I have seen before and have pretty slept through so it wasn't the music that was keeping me awake. I could barely see the stage because of how packed it was so it wasn't that watching the band was super exciting. To be honest, I can't tell you why it was so magical. The musicianship was amazing. The fact that these guys seemed cohesive as a group but weren't doing anything that fit together rhythmically at times was mind blowing to me.”

On a gorgeous fall evening in downtown Minneapolis at the famous 7th St. Entry at First Avenue, UK sibling duo Wasia Project played to an all-ages sold-out crowd. The stellar jazz duo, with a drummer (Luca Wade) and bass (Tom Pacitti), got the crowd moving right from the get go.

Pianist William Gao was mesmerizing on keys and has a very distinctive vocals, similar to the likes of Damon Albarn (Blur), Honne, and Lightspeed Champion. He showed off all night on the piano but gave us a great blend of soothing melodic vocals with his big hit “To Get Better”.

Sister and lead vocalist Olivia Hardy could be the next Adele or Amy Winehouse, she absolutely blew my mind with her enchanted voice and stage performance. Hardy played all her hits “Takes Me Back Home” and “Is This What Love is.”

Engaging the crowd all night with her infectious smile, Olivia graced us all with Jazzy-infused vibes. Wasia and company gave us a nice two-song encore, with arguably my favorite track "Impossible", of the 2022 release How Can I Pretend?.

They’ve had quite the ride recently, touring with the likes of Tom Odell and Laufey across the states and Europe. Wasia Project just released their second EP Isotope. After a few West coast dates, they head back to the UK before taking a nice break for the holidays.

Sabrina Sterling opened and was her very first tour playing shows.

Everything Everything to open. We saw the band when they were first time “ever!” in April 2016 and wrote, “Manchester’s Everything Everything opened up the show, in support of their third album Get To Heaven. The band came to our attention in 2013 when they generated massive buzz selling out their entire UK tour, thanks to their strong songs on their sophomore album Arc, which landed them on the shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize and nominations for the Ivor Novello Award. Singer Jonathan Higgs noted that this was their “first time here... ever!” and the band seemed generally excited to finally Minneapolis. In fact, they were so excited, they added Prince’s “Raspberry Beret” at the end of their setlist ... but unfortunately, due to time constraints, the band did not perform the cover song in their 40-minute set.”

Canada’s Juno Award-winning The Sheepdogs headlined the Fine Line, in Minneapolis, on September 15, 2024, with Shane Guerrette as opener. The band’s last album Outta Sight came out in June 2022, so the group had some brand new songs they’ve written and testing them out on this tour.

We saw the Sheepdogs in Oct 2015 and wrote, “The Sheepdogs just finished their tour in support of their fifth album Future Nostalgia, available now via Dine Alone Records. The nearly sold-out 7th Street Entry show last Friday was, in part, thanks to The Sheepdogs' longtime fandom. The Sheepdogs sounded like 70s vintage beard rock. A lot of fans have already seen the band multiple times, so their audience were on the older side.”

A beautiful Monday evening in Minneapolis the crowds rushed in to a near sell out Xavier Rudd show at the historic First Avenue.

Bobby Alu opened and came all the way from Byron Bay, Australia. He brought all the beach vibes and I was calling him the “Jack Johnson Jr.” based on just a few songs in his set. His new release, which came out on May 3rd, is called “Keep It Tropical.” He told an awesome story on how he was born and all the magic that happens in Byron Bay. Just a matter of time before this guy blows up.

Xavier Rudd came out hot, with the resonating fire eagle in the back drop. Of course, he took the stage barefoot for the entire set like he just walked out of the jungle. After seeing him 10 years ago in New Orleans this was quite the reunion with Mr. Rudd and was very exhilarating to be on another journey with him.

He played a lot of his hits towards the end of the set “Follow the Sun” and “Spirit Bird.” He had quite the set up on stage with horns all over his drum set, every looping pedal you can imagine, and played all the strings in the book from ukelele, to banjo, to slide guitar. And he gave plenty of Minnesota love to the crowd throughout the night.

His latest EP release is called Freedom Sessions. Everytime I see Xavier live I'm ready to do yoga for hours and live in an enchanted forest.

When you go to a show you’re hoping to be inspired by instrumental talents, a voice, or just general musical collaborations. At the historic First Avenue, two Swiss brothers called Hermanos Gutiérrez did exactly that too a sold-out crowd. No opening band, just a local DJ, Miguel Vargas.

Alejandro and Estevan Gutierrez are eight years apart but have been mastering guitar since a very young age. A jam session back in 2015 in Zurich made these two poised to transform into musical icons.

In 2022 they had the privilege of working with the legendary Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. During the First Ave show this past weekend they dedicated and played plenty of tracks from that album and gave a big shout out the one and only Clint Eastwood.

I usually don't feel like I’m climbing a mountain or floating on ocean at the same time but Hermanos took me to another side of the world. Most of the tracks during their set had incredible build ups with Alejandro mostly on lap steel slide guitar and Estevan switching off between bongos and electric guitar.

“Low Sun” has to be my favorite track of the new EP release Until We Meet Again out April 11th, 2024. They played that whole EP, and a good amount of tracks from El Bueno Y El Malo (2022) and Eternamente (2021). My calendar is marked for their much anticipated 2024 release on June 14th, titled Sonido Cosmico.

These brothers have a bright future ahead of the and have movie soundtrack written all over them on every release they put out. Wish I could have invited these guys over after the show for a second jam session around a big bonfire. Hermanos Gutierrez deserved every standing ovation they got at First Ave on Saturday night. Let’s hope they come back to Minnesota soon.
