Chappell Roan just sold out First Avenue, in Minneapolis, on October 1st.

Wow, oh wow. It’s an incredible transformation for “the thrift store pop star.”

We saw Roan on her very first tour, when she was 19 years old, in 12 Oct 2017 and wrote: “After ‘Bad For You’ was played, she had an awkward forgetting what city she was in… but eventually all was good as it all came to her that she saw Adele in Minnesota and she’ll never forget that moment. This was also the young singer very first tour [in 2017], so she was taking it all in, and being very happy to be on stage.”

It was just your standard singer/songwriter fare, so, seeing her now, in 2023, it is an unbelievable transformation.

As it turns out, shortly after the 2017, she moved to Los Angeles, from Springfield, Missouri, and really discover who she was and began “writing songs as the real me.”

She hit it big with ‘the song of the summer of 2021’, “Pink Pony Club”, which tells the story of a young girl who leaves a small town to become a stripper in West Hollywood. The song hints at her discovery of the Abbey, a gay bar, and she always wanted to be a go-go dancer.

Now, in 2023, her album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess just came out and her USA tour has sold out! Her audience is incredibly devoted and happily sung to all the hit songs. And her cover of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” was a singalong.

Apparently, they have a different theme each night, and for First Avenue, it was ‘Angels and Devils’ theme… so fans showed up dressing in either Angel or Devils outfits. Roan, herself, came out running in her Angel costume, while her band were dressed as Devils. Of course, the costume thing sounded great on paper, but when it came down to it, the wings disconnected her earphone. She had to remove her boots, she basically had to remove the whole costume after the first song, “Femininomenon.”

Prior to Roan’s show, we had three dancers: Tommy St James, Anna, and Rosanne. Each some sort of a drag dance routine, and have social media following. My favorite is the Britney Spears number, which had Rosanne, in her “Thailand” skirt, dancing on top of a speaker.

This was a fun, and unique, show, and I’m not surprised that the entire tour is selling out, thanks to word of mouth.

If you can make it out, go see her on this tour, as the next time you get to see her, it will be with Olivia Rodrigo and her legion of fans.

Los Angeles’ The Aquadolls is currently on their “Spring Fling” tour, stopping by 7th Street Entry, in Minneapolis, on Saturday night.

We weren’t originally scheduled to cover the Aquadolls, having previously committed to Dave Mason at the Pantages Theatre on this night… but we worked out our tight schedule to see both shows, but that meant missing out on the opening bands for Aquadolls.

On the day of the show, Mason announced his show’s rescheduling, due to illness... so, the good news was that we could see all the bands on the all-ages Aquadolls show.

Starting the show was local band Surly Grrly, who was last seen with The Dollyrots and the Von Tramps in March 2023. The queercore band is fronted by Medbh McNamara and Eloïse Boigenzahn, who takes most of the spotlight in their set, by trading lead vocals on certain songs.

They have a very Bikini Kill sound, with songs like “Piss Boy” and “Hey Little Girl.”

There were two covers in their set, the first was Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time” (but done in the style of Slothrust), and Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name.”

Next up was trio Allergen (front by Shannon Maroney with Mia on bass and Anna on drums), who was last seen with The Aquadolls and Sitting On Stacy in April 2022.

Shannon didn’t talk much between sets, except to make brief comments whenever they’re tuning their instruments. For example, you get the impression that they didn’t want to use social media… but in the modern age, they’re forced to use these tools to get their music out. We can relate, having abandoned a Facebook for many years. So, if you search for the group, they’re using “Allgerg3n” to stand out.

It looks like their last release was called Honesty Hour in 2020, but since then, they’ve released a few demo collections and a new single called “Dirt”.

The Aquadolls (Melissa Brooks, Keilah Nina, Jacqueline Proctor) closed out the show, stepping on the stage to their intro music of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” We never knew the origin of the band’s name, but having heard the cheesy line “I’m a Barbie Girl in a Barbie World…”, it suddenly made sense.

Over ten years ago, band leader Melissa Brooks formed The Aquadolls to channel her angst through music, which were influenced from pop music to riot grrrl.

You can tell they admire women that came before them in music, such as The Go-Go’s, which they did their faithful version of “Vacation.” We have to admit that Jacqueline Proctor does a pretty good Belinda Carlisle.

They also love Australian alternative band Lash, based on their cover of “Take Me Away”, which most Americans would have heard through actress Christina Vidal (with Lindsay Lohan) singing the song in the 2003 Freaky Friday film. The funny thing is that the original line “It’s the same old sh**, never ends” was replaced with “It’s the same old stuff, never ends,” because it’s a Disney film. Of course, we got the full original Lash version when Aquadolls plays it. As a cover lover, we approved of this cover.

The rest remaining set had some songs from the forthcoming Charmed album, including “Far Far Away,” which Melissa described as “a fairytale twist on the working class, discussing that the only person who can truly save you is yourself” and “Beachy”, which was the penultimate song.

Charmed will be available June 2nd, via Enci Records.

Canadian alt-pop icon Lights headlined the Varsity Theater on May 3rd.

Atlanta’s Tillie (stylized as tiLLie) opened the show. Based on her love for Britney Spears (covering “Lucky” on the set), you would think she was a pop-kid, but Tillie actually spent many years playing basement shows with her punk band. In 2016, she caught the eye of Machine Gun Kelly, and was asked to collaborate on a cover of the Foo Fighters’ hit “Everlong.”

Then she was invited by Kevin Lyman to go on her first-ever tour on Vans Warped Tour in 2017… resulting in many press calling her “Warped Tour Newcomers You Need to Know Before This Summer” and “Under-The-Radar Female Bands and Artists You Need To Hear Now”, etc.

What is tragic, is that Tillie was gearing up for her headlining tour in 2019, in support of her EP Loud Mouth… when COVID-19 put a stop to everything.

Seeing Tillie on stage, you can just hear how excited she was to be back on stage, after a two year absence from touring, despite the fact that she got a cold from going out and playing every night.

Highlight of her set was her latest single, “The Me U Kno”, which was set for release at midnight, May 4th.

After “Reality Bites”, a song about her car accident, she mentioned that she was going to put together a new EP for this Summer.

Lights got her start in 2008 with her debut self-titled EP. It led to her album The Listening, which got her recognized with a Juno Award for “New Artist of the Year” and stole two awards for Astral Media Radio.

She first came to our attention in 2015, when she was touring in support of her then-new album Little Machines, calling her “buzzworthy Toronto singer-songwriter.”

After the country’s lockdown due to the pandemic, Lights planned her return to touring by writing new songs on PƎP . The intro song, “Prodigal Daughter”, with the backdrop of “I’m Back”, really set the tone that it’s been a while, but she’s excited to be back and playing live music.

Part of the fun of her show is watching the background video, which had a lot of hidden Easter eggs, for old Lights fans to enjoy. For example, you can see footage of her character avatars from a video game or images from her comic book. It was cool if you knew it, but it wasn’t terrible if you didn’t understand it. They’re just meant for the fans.

Based on her reception of the tour so far, which she’s having a lot of fun… she promised that she’ll be back.

"It's not like we're keeping track, but so far Minneapolis is winning!" declared Abner Ramirez, one half of folk duo Johnnyswim at their Varsity Theater show in Minneapolis last night, August 4th.

Britten Newbill

Opening up the show was their friend Britten Newbill, who kicked off his set with "She". You can tell that he certainly knows how to work the crowd with his brief 30 minute set, first noting the large crowd with, "So this is Minneapolis on a Monday night?" and again "Minneapolis definitely doesn't have the case of the Mondays!" Later in the middle of his set, he said that his song, "Wild Flower" was inspired by our city and dedicated the song to Minneapolis.

My personal highlight for his show was a snippet of Divinyls' "I Touch Myself" and Aaliyah's "One In A Million" in his set finale... however those songs might be lost on a younger generation of music fans.

Johnnyswim

We last saw Johnnyswim, the duo consisting of Donna Summer's daughter Amanda Sudano and singer/songwriter Abner Ramirez, at the Varsity Theater earlier this year, prior to their debut album. We wrote that you should "expect the mounting buzz ... and even more exposure as the album breaks in late April."

Now that the debut album Diamonds is out, and just premiered on VH-1's "Top 20 Countdown" as well as CMT's "Pure Country", #1 on iTunes Singer-Songwriter Chart, #10 overall, and top 30 on the Billboard 200 Chart, it's safe to say that Johnnyswim have finally made it.

This is a big deal, as explained by Ramirez on stage, he grew up in a small town and dreamt being a musician as an occupation. His friends tried to discourage him, and in fact, one of his friend, Adam, gave Ramirez a quarter so he can call him when Ramirez will find himself "homeless" and looking for help. When Johnnyswim found themselves on the Tonight Show last year, and his friend saw them on national television... guess who called who? With that triumph, they wrote their "suck-it" title track song "Diamonds".

Many of Johnnyswim's songs are stories of their lives and their relationship. You get a glimpse into their love life ("Falling for Me") or family matter ("Adelina", a song about Ramirez's mother and ending with lyrics sung in Spanish.)

Johnnyswim were pretty funny too. When they announced that, "Three months ago, we had our first baby." Everyone looked perplexed, after all Amanda Sudano looked amazing for someone who just gave birth. Then the punchline came, "Not a human baby, it's our new album! We got 67 songs we're going to play, I hope you don't mind."

By the time "Home" was played, they brought back Britten Newbill on stage, who help closed out the rest of their set.

I actually meant to upload "You Got It All" on my Cover Lover, but forgot I was still signed in on this account. Well, my loss is your pain!

If you grew up in the eighties, you probably remember the Jets. C'mon you must've remember "Crush on You" & "Cross my Broken Heart" and other hits ?

The Jets are a very large South Pacific Island family from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Between the 17 siblings, only the oldest were actually performers. They had a string of hits from '85 to '89, and was kind of like the Polynesian-version of the Jackson Five.

One of their big hit, "You Got It All", hit #3 on the US Billboard charts. There were a few covers to this song, but they were mostly Asian-bands... with the exception of Britney Spear's version (which is an extra track off her UK album Oops I Did It Again). The recording I have sounds kind of bad, it sounded like someone taped it off the radio or something.

MYMP actually stands for "Make Your Mother Proud", they are two Filipino artist, mostly acoustic. Arnee Hidalgo is another Filipino artist who also covered this song.
