Beloved indie trio Bright Eyes (featuring Conor Oberst, producer/multi-instrumentalist Mike Mogis and composer/ arranger/ multi-instrumentalist Nathaniel Walcott) have announced a limited spring tour run ahead of their appearance at Corona Capital Guadalajara. The band will stop by First Avenue in Minneapolis on May 11th, 2023.

We saw Oberst in June 2014 and said, “Conor Oberst along with Dawes, then took the stage for his two-hour set, which varied from Night One, but also opened with the first two songs which start his new album, ‘Time Forgot’ and ‘Zigzagging Toward the Light’ before he reached back into his Bright Eyes catalogue for ‘We Are Nowhere and It’s Now’ (“this one’s about purgatory”, Oberst would say). Dawes had already rehearsed 45-50 songs of the Oberst oeuvre, so was ready for any setlist changes or called audible.”

Grammy-nominated The Wood Brothers is on tour in support of their eighth studio album Heart is the Hero (Honey Jar/Thirty Tigers). The album was recorded on analog to 16-track tape direct from the studio floor without any computer assistance.

“There was something beautiful about never turning on the computer. Until about 25 years ago, sound was only heard and rarely seen. But in modern recording, we've become used to working on music with our eyes, because we can see and manipulate the sound waves on a computer screen. That changes how you experience music and how you make decisions," says Chris Wood. "Making a record without turning on the screen took us back in time to the era where you had to capture a good performance instead of piecing together or 'fixing' a performance. If we weren't happy with a take, we had to perform and record another version. Recording without a computer forced us to trust our instincts, choose what felt best, and move on.”

Their promotional tour will take them to the Utepils Brewing Co. in Minneapolis on May 12th, 2023.

Please note that the event is part of “Live at Utepils”, an outdoor concert series presented in partnership with Sue McLean & Associates.

At first I was a little surprised but as soon as he started singing, I understood.”

Nashville based acclaimed singer-songwriter Savannah Conley is currently on tour.

She recently released her single, “Always Gonna Happen” on Good Partners/Virgin Music.

Talking about the single, Conley said, “There was a moment when I realized that this is the first time in my life where things have actually happened to me. My co-writer and I looked at each other and talked about the sh** that has happened that we haven’t even talked about before. When you figure out the world isn’t what you thought it was, it makes you question a lot. “Always Gonna Happen” plays into that; it’s about trusting my instincts to get away from situations and people to move forward in life.”

The Motion City Soundtrack’s “Commit This To Memory 17 Year Anniversary Tour” is finally here. You see, the band decided to come back in January 2022 ... but that was delayed until now.

We saw MCS on their last tour in June 2016 and wrote, “Longtime Minneapolis power punk band Motion City Soundtrack is breaking up as a band after nearly twenty years. They are letting fans get the chance to say goodbye to the band on their final “So Long, Farewell Tour.””

All Get Out to open. The South Carolina-based indie-rock quartet released Kodak on Equal Vision Records … the band’s first full-length offering since 2018's No Bouquet.

This weekend it’s fireworks, picnics, barbecues, and summer heat- some additional heat and fireworks are supplied from upcoming concerts including the Arrowhead takeover of No Shoes Nation as Kenny Chesney and friends bring their big show to the fabled football stadium.

A couple arena shows, and some fine club/theater gigs make it a week to get out and support the return of live music.

Friday July 1

Bright Eyes w Hurray for the Riff Raff, Uptown Theater, $42-$47

It’s been a busy year for Bright Eyes fans as leader Conor Oberst and group have re-released their first albums, alongside a newly recorded six-song EP for each, with the first batch of three, out last month. The last new album was 2020’s Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was, which was their first in nine years.

With his core band on an extended hiatus, we caught Oberst solo as part of Rock the Garden 2015 and a memorable gig with Dawes both opening and serving as backup band, as well as his super-secret project with Phoebe Bridgers, Better Oblivion Community Center.

Be aware that vaxx proof is required and masks worn unless drinking. Hurray For the Riff Raff, the project of Alynda Segarra, opens the show who we’ve caught live with City and Colour and also as part of the Festival Palomino and has new album, Life on Earth to support.

Howard Hewett, Miki Howard and more, Music Hall, $61

A night of smooth and classic R&B – with performances by Hewett, Howard, Alexander O’Neal, Cherrelle, and Keith Washington and sounds by DJ Fresh.

Saturday July 2

Kenny Chesney w Dan + Shay, Old Dominion and Carly Pearce, Arrowhead Stadium. $40-$455

The big one! The 8-time CMA and Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year brings his Blue Chair Bay Rum Presents Here And Now 2022 Tour Fueled by Marathon to conquer Arrowhead, after selling out most shows since the trek began in late April.

This tour features 126 cutting edge overhead LED lights and a 220-foot-wide stage, with a strut into the sandbar area, with some nineteen trucks (sustainably down from 24) hauling everything across the country.

Support from rising female vocalist Carly Pearce, five-time ACM / four-time CMA Group of the Year Old Dominion and four-time GRAMMY winners Dan + Shay, make this a full evening and a true highlight of the summer concert season. Scattered storms are in the forecast, so pack a poncho.

Aldous Harding, Granada Lawrence. $22/$25

The beguiling New Zealand singer-songwriter returns with new song, “Old Peel” and new album Warm Chris, released in late March on 4AD. We caught her live most recently as a headliner in 2019 where we heard that new single, years before its eventual release.

Cardiff Wales singer-songwriter H Hawkline to open what will no doubt, be a very interesting show.

Tab Benoit, Knuckleheads, $35-$45

Louisiana-raised Delta Blues guitarist returns to the area with support from fellow guitarist and Deep Blues artist Lightnin Malcom to transform the venue into a true juke joint.

Liily, Bottleneck-Lawrence, $15-$18

Los Angeles alt-rock shoe gazers come to River City in support of debut record TV or Not TV. We caught the band live last fall in Minneapolis and wrote, “Singer, Dylan Nash, reminds me of a stoic Ian Brown, while the band, guitarist Sam De La Torre, bassist Charlie Anastasis, and drummer Maxx Morando, play post-punk, art-rock music.” Brooklyn’s Catcher, another new post-punk band, to open.

Sunday July 3

Todd Rundgren, Uptown, $39-$79

The prolific Rock & Roll Hall of Famer is out across America promoting his next album 'Space Force' on his Unpredictable Tour featuring band members Jesse Gress, Kasim Sulton, Prairie Prince and Gil Assayas. Rundgren spent much of last year on his The Individualist, A True Star tour performing a full side of his classic album A Wizard, A True Star plus a set of career-spanning hits, and he’s been entertaining every time we’ve seen him previous.

Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls w/The Bronx, Liberty Hall, $35-$50

UK folk punk singer-songwriter has emerged from the pandemic as more ambitious than anyone else touring – in support of new album FTHC, he'll play all 50 states this summer, calling it the 50 States in 50 Days tour, which does allow for a few days off, but not many, “Well, I've been unable to tour properly for a couple of years now, and always said that when I could get back to it I'd do it properly."

We caught him live in 2019 and KC / Missouri fans won’t be left out either, as he’s scheduled a free 30min in-store at Mills Record Co. in Westport, that afternoon before the Lawrence show. The Bronx and Pet Needs are support acts.

Dirty Heads with Soja, GrindersKC. $49.50-$90

Dirty Heads have announced their 2022 US headlining tour titled “Let’s Get It Kraken” featuring special guest SOJA running through August. Last summer, they released their The Best of Dirty Heads, featuring new collaborations with Travis Barker and Aimee of The Interrupters. Band guitarist Duddy B also co-hosts The Rome and Duddy Show on the Consequence Podcast Network and (of course) has a new line of CBD products launching.

Rod Wave and friends, T-Mobile Center, $49-$275

Rod Wave (aka Rodarius Marcell Green) dropped his third album, Beautiful Mind, ahead of this tour and is bringing along Moneybagg Yo, Big Latto, Sleazy & Friends, for this last show of the leg.

His first album, Ghetto Gospel, reached number ten on Billboard's Top 200, and second album 2020’s Pray 4 Love, peaked at number two. Recent audience fights at some East Coast shows have not stopped the momentum of this popular arena show.

Minneapolis developed into a strong market for the six-time GRAMMY Award-winning singer, songwriter, performer, and author, and so we were happy to watch that develop- seeing her in small clubs in 2007, having her play two of the most crowded Leinie Stage nights ever then eventually graduating to the Grandstand at the MN State Fair, and also headlining at the Basilica Block Party.

Since then, it’s been even more success and the Beyond These Silent Days summer tour stops in Kansas City, and is bring along country legend Tanya Tucker, who collab’d on 2019 hit album While I’m Livin’ with Carlile and Shooter Jennings, and just finished its follow-up.

Nashville singer-songwriter Katie Pruitt to open, in support of 2020’s Expectations, and who also recently released a couple of vintage Neil Young covers.

 

Thursday July 7

Strfkr with The Undercover Dream Lovers, and Das Kope, Granada. $27

Being No One, Going Nowhere is the title of the new fourth album with band leader Joshua Hodges considering it an invitation to get blissfully insignificant. That’s what he aimed to do when he exiled himself to the desert to create this record. And you’ve never heard Cyndi Lauper’s signature hit song live until you’ve heard the Portland indie band ‘s version of it.

Openers The Undercover Dream Lovers are the brainchild of LA-based psych indie DIY artist Matt Koenig, known for tracks "Good Luck" and "Come Home" and full-length album It's All in Your Head. 

Das Kope is a LA-based, Brazilian born, visual artist/musician whose debut album ‘Where I Live’, was self-released in 2020

Chris Isaak and Lyle Lovett, Starlight. $35-$159.50

Platinum-selling, GRAMMY-nominated musician and actor Isaak and four-time GRAMMY-winning singer, composer, and actor Lovett and his Large Band combine forces for a formidable double bill.

Isaak's best-known song is "Wicked Game," and he has acted in several films, also starring in his own TV series while Lovett, who also acts, has recorded thirteen albums since his debut in 1986. Live reports are that Lovett has stepped in for a song in Isaak’s set, which we love the interplay on a bill like this with two such respected longtime artists.

Bobby Rush, Knuckleheads, $20-$35

Blues Hall of Famer, six-time Grammy nominee, and 13-time Blues Music Award winner Rush has been making records for nearly 70 years, has more than 400 recordings, 75 career releases, 27 studio albums, and has an autobiography just out.

Rush, who is 87, is not done yet. 2020 album Rawer Than Raw was an all-acoustic effort that paid tribute to the blues history of Mississippi and won Best Traditional Blues Album.

Friday July 8

Machine Gun Kelly with Avril Lavigne and Iann Dior, T-Mobile Center. $29.50-$129.50

On top of the charts (and gossip columns with partner Megan Fox) album Mainstream Sellout released in March featuring singles “Ay” with Lil Wayne, “Emo Girl” with WILLOW, and “maybe” featuring Bring Me The Horizon.

His 52-stop first arena headlining tour includes special guests Avril Lavigne (who’s on a big comeback herself) and iann dior for this stop. MGK has amassed over 15.5 billion streams online, selling over 10 million album units, and we caught him before his big breakout success, opening for Imagine Dragons at a 2018 Super Bowl week show.

Ozark Mountain Daredevils w Kentucky Headhunters, Uptown Theater, $25-$75

With hits that include "Jackie Blue" and "If You Want To Get To Heaven," the Springfield, MO-based Daredevils have sold more than two million records since their early 70’s formation. Support from country rockers The Kentucky Headhunters and The Comancheros.

Man Man, Bottleneck, $20

Philly experimental rockers return in support of 2020’s trippy Dream Hunting in the Valley of the In-Between and even had a song in the Cyberpunk 2077 game. Live, when we saw them in 2015, it was uniquely a bit hard to define, saying you should just experience it, and we think the new show is probably similar. LA duo Hard Tays Night to open.

Australian psychedelic group Tame Impala is doing some selective U.S. Summer Music Festival (having just played Coachella)… and they are headlining a couple of Surly Brewing Festival (at the Surly Brewing Co. Festival Field). Both shows have sold out.

We last saw the group at Desert Daze 2018, they only played a few songs: “Tame Impala started their set off strong with the groovy tune Nangs off of 2015’s al-bum Currents. Let it Happen was next, and from the pit I heard the eruption of “Whoa” and “Wow’s” from the crowd, and at first it seemed like it was maybe in response to the trippy background effects behind lead singer Kevin Parker. I quickly realized it was the sky illuminating with lightning bolts above us. Sure enough, halfway through Sundown Syndrome (ironic much), a producer came out and announced that they had to stop. Kevin kind of shrugged and said “I guess we gotta stop.” and they all ran off the stage.”

Like many bands in the Midwest at the moment, The Dear Hunter is touring to or after Chicago's Riot Fest.

The band's new album Act IV: Rebirth In Reprise recently came out on Cave & Canary Goods / Equal Vision Records, and marked the long-awaited continuation of the band's six album concept series chronicling the story of a boy at the turn of the century, only referred to as "The Dear Hunter."

The Dear Hunter is multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter Casey Crescenzo, drummer Nick Crescenzo, guitars Robert Parr, bassist Nick Sollecito, guitarist Maxwell Tousseau and keyboardist Andrew Brown.

Rock the Garden Preview: June 20, 2015

Read More Rock the Garden Rock the Garden returns to the Walker Art Center as a two-day affair June 20/21, with acts to be announced on-air March 31st. Wishful thinking says Belle and Sebastian w/Courtney Barnett …

We are big fans of Rock the Garden, the annual Minneapolis music festival by the Walker Art and 89.3 The Current. In my opinion, this is, far and away, their best lineup yet!

Highlight will be my favorite band Belle & Sebastian to headline June 20th (which we previously predicted), while Babes In Toyland's first announced local hometown gig on June 21st. Personally, my group of friends are really excited about Babes' return... especially because we attended their last ever gig in 2000.

The 'odd band out' on the bill is Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, who saw in 2012. We were interested in the band because Kuti's father, Fela Kuti, pioneered Afrobeat... and his son with Fela's band Egypt 80 continues his father's legacy in music, human rights, and political issues.

Rock the Garden sells out every year, so do yourself a favor and grab tickets ASAP. Rock the Garden 2015 Tickets will go on sale to Walker Art Center and The Current/Minnesota Public Radio members at 11am, Thursday, March 12 (Tomorrow!). Remaining tickets will go on sale to the public at 11 am, Tuesday, March 17.

SATURDAY, JUNE 20

	thestand4rd I've never heard of this this Minnesota-based, who seemed to have only formed late last year, featuring Corbin “Spooky” Black, Allan Kingdom, Psymun and Bobby Raps. Thanks to their incredible debut performance in New York City, DJ Khaled and Kanye West are calling themselves fans of thestand4rd. Curious about their music? You can check out their self-titled album on Soundcloud, where you will find a link to download the album for free.
	Lucius We've seen Lucius every time they roll into town, including their first Minnesota appearance in 2013, where I wrote, "Turnout to the Lucius show was terrific, for a Thursday night. It tells me that the next time the New York band come back around, that they're going to play a bigger venue, especially if they continue with their catchy 60s girl-group songs. " The last I heard from the Brooklyn-based quintet was that they were re-releasing their debut album as Wildewoman Deluxe Edition.
	Courtney Barnett Angela is a big Courtney Barnett fan, describing her as, "if Liz Phair were Australian and liked to sing about things like masturbating to help yourself fall to sleep because it’s cheaper than Temazepam or going to hipster parties." We were lucky enough to catch Barnett in Chicago (18 Feb 2014) and the sold out show in Minneapolis (24 Jun 2014). Barnett's latest release Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit is coming out March 24th via Mom+Pop Music.
	Conor Oberst If you don't know who Conor Oberst, you must be living under a rock. The first time I heard of him, it was under his stagename/band, Bright Eyes, and his song "Lover I Don't Have to Love" is one of my favorite songs. We caught Oberst live in June 2014, and mentioned, "Conor Oberst along with Dawes, then took the stage for his two-hour set, which varied from Night One, but also opened with the first two songs which start his new album, ‘Time Forgot’ and ‘Zigzagging Toward the Light’ before he reached back into his Bright Eyes catalogue for ‘We Are Nowhere and It’s Now’ (“this one’s about purgatory”, Oberst would say)...". Oberst's debut album for Nonesuch Records is called Upside Down Mountain, and it's coming out this May 2015.
	Belle & Sebastian You know I love Belle & Sebastian... I've seen them every time they play in Minneapolis - see ticket scans. It'll be 9 years since their last Minnesota appearance, so let's just say I'm really excited to see the Scottish band again. B&S' latest album Girls in Peacetime Wants to Dance is out now on Matador Records, so expect to hear a few tracks from the new album... plus, of course old fan favorites like "Dog on Wheels" and "Me and the Major" (as evident by their setlist from Sydney (29 Jan 2015) and Los Angeles (07 Oct 2014)).

If they were officially a supergroup, you might call them “NebraskaFornia”…

… which at least sounds better than “Conor Dawes” or “Dawes Oberst”.  Either way, the formidable combination of Omaha’s Conor Oberst and California’s Dawes, proved incendiary on their second night of a two-night stand in front of a capacity crowd at First Avenue in Minneapolis.

You can probably praise (or blame) singer-songwriter Jonathan Wilson for the combination; he, the architect of the modern Laurel Canyon sound that Dawes is known for (re: their most recent album, Stories Don’t End [Red/Hub Records]), is also the co-producer of Oberst’s latest solo effort, Upside Down Mountain (Nonesuch Records).

Dawes continued to prove itself as a supreme backing band (having previously worked as such with Jackson Browne, Robbie Robertson and John Fogerty) as well as a great Americana four-piece in their own right, and Oberst aptly showed a confident maturity in playing songs, both old and new.

The three-hour evening was opened by Los Angeles-based Dawes, who considers Minneapolis one of their strongest markets, in a solid hour-long set of their own.  The band opened with a string of new classics, ‘Most People', ‘Time Spent in Los Angeles’ and ‘If I Wanted Someone’, in front of a raving receptive crowd, that connected with singer Taylor Goldsmith’s storytelling lyrics.  The band humbly downplays the love given by Minneapolis, though could likely sell out anywhere locally, if they decided to ever do an extended residency.

‘Fire Away’, from previous effort, Nothing is Wrong, was stretched to showcase the chops of Goldsmith on guitar, his younger brother, Griffin, keeping time (while making the best “rock faces”) on drums, Wylie Gelber’s steady bass, and the versatile keyboards of Tay Strathairn.  “We’re gonna play a brand new song for you”, the elder Goldsmith remarked, before ‘To Be Completely Honest’, a mid-tempo’d revelatory number that fits nicely within the band’s song canon.

He would then strap on a custom Stratocaster, given to him earlier that day by someone in the crowd, for ‘When My Time Comes’ which had all 1500 people singing the chorus back to the band.  “You’re sort of stuck with us the rest of the night”, Goldsmith mentioned to all those unaware, before a heartfelt 'A Little Bit of Everything', which still affects with its emotive lyrical painting of people in various situations.  The band then concluded with an upbeat ‘From a Right Angle’, mentioning they’d return soon, with Oberst in tow.

Conor Oberst along with Dawes, then took the stage for his two-hour set, which varied from Night One, but also opened with the first two songs which start his new album, ‘Time Forgot’ and ‘Zigzagging Toward the Light’ before he reached back into his Bright Eyes catalogue for ‘We Are Nowhere and It’s Now’ (“this one’s about purgatory”, Oberst would say).  Dawes had already rehearsed 45-50 songs of the Oberst oeuvre, so was ready for any setlist changes or called audible.

Songs from Oberst’s new album were sung from an obvious personal edge, while older cuts from his earlier Bright Eyes and Mystic Valley Band incarnations, showed a tempered anger to the brashness of some of the youthfully written songs and the dexterity to change from a whispering acoustic ballad, to an all-out rock tour-de-force.

Mystic Valley Band’s ‘Sausalito’ got toes tapping, and the new ‘Enola Gay’ was given a slightly heavier treatment, via Dawes’ expansive instrumentation.  The Bright Eyes cut ‘Old Soul Song (For The New World Order)’ started gently, but quickly morphed into a seething, heavy sonic assault with end chorus line, “Yeah, they went wild”. The “sort-of title track” to the new album, ‘Lonely at the Top’, slowed things and let the audience catch its collective breath, before Oberst dug backward again into Bright Eyes’ ‘Method Acting’.

Dawes took a break midway through for an acoustic mini-set by Oberst, including the delicate, ‘You Are Your Mother’s Child’, as heard in last year’s film, Stuck in Love.  ‘Get Well Cards’ had Oberst cheekily explaining mail carriers to younger audience members, and he smilingly apologized before ‘Poison Oak’ for “playing a lot of sad music” and “not having a lot of party jams”.  ‘I Got a Reason #2’ echo’d with its Bob Dylan/Woody Guthrie-style lyrics and Bright Eyes’ 2005 song, ‘Lua’ brought the main set to a close with its heartfelt narrative.

The equally gentle ‘First Day of My Life’ (also from 2005) started the encore softly before Bright Eyes’ honkytonking ‘Another Travelin’ Song’ ramped things up with Dawes proving their music worth, highlighted by a great Goldsmith guitar solo.  ‘Roosevelt Room’, a Mystic Valley Band song, closed the night with aplomb, a high-energy fitting end to a spirited three-hour evening from both acts.

Here’s hoping we haven’t seen the last of this very complimentary and satisfying musical coupling.

They may look like the company photo of your accountants or law team, but underneath that façade, St. Paul and the Broken Bones soulfully proves you can’t judge a book by its cover.

The seven-piece Birmingham, AL band formed just two years ago, and has been gathering increasing buzz with a retro-soul sound that harkens back to the honest and pure songs of the 1960’s Staxx and Atlantic Records catalogs. Vocalist Paul Janeway sounds at times like vintage Otis Redding and leads the rising band that unfortunately has no connection to St Paul, MN, though does play across the Mississippi River in Minneapolis (now sold out), as one of the stops on its summer tour in support of their debut full-length, Half the City (Single Lock Records).

Bright Eyes, brighter future.

Omaha singer-songwriter Conor Oberst is back on the road, with an acclaimed new solo album, Upside Down Mountain (Nonesuch Records), a Laurel Canyon inspired release co-produced by Jonathan Wilson and is bringing California band Dawes with him, that act both as opener and as Oberst’s backing band. A return to his earlier, more personal approach to songwriting, expect the prolific songsmith to pepper older Bright Eyes and Mystic Valley Band songs into his set, as well as the more recent solo work.

Dawes, the California foursome that considers Minneapolis as its strongest market, is still in support of its latest, Stories Don’t End (Red/Hub Records), and will no doubt add extra ‘oomph’ to Oberst’s songs, as well as an hour-long set of their own blend of folk/Americana, for a ‘can’t miss’ show.

These are the kind of “Nightmares” you want to embrace.

English trio Band of Skulls is on the road in support of its third full-length, Himalayan (Psycollective/Kobalt Records) and its current single, ‘Nightmares’. The new album curiously also features a song titled, ‘I Feel Like Ten Men, Nine Dead and One Dying’ inspired by a phrase from guitarist Russell Marsden’s grandfather, and another called ‘Toreador’, inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s 1932 novel Death In The Afternoon.

The epic-invoking name of the new album’s title, (which was helmed by legendary producer Nick Launay [INXS, The Cribs, Midnight Oil, Nick Cave]), raises the bar of expectations in terms of the band’s live performance. The trio also just performed a special show with a string quartet in Los Angeles, but expect more rocking for the remainder of their tour dates.
