Heart Bones is kicking off their tour at the Turf Club in St Paul. This is the new project from local favorite Har Mar Superstar and Sabrina Ellis (of Sweet Spirit). The two met and became friends while touring in 2016, and we got a glimpse of the two on stage together in last year’s Sweet Spirit at the 7th Street Entry, when Har Mar showed up at their show.

With this new tour, billed as Heart Bones, the two will tackle playing and performing the Dirty Dancing soundtrack … which would include classic hits like “Hungry Eyes” and “Be My Baby”.

The husband & wife duo Closeness (Todd and Orenda Fink) to open. If you didn’t know, Todd Fink is the singer/writer for one of my favorite emo-dance band The Faint and Orenda. So if you like the sound of that… show up early to check out their set.

Also, Lazear (Howard Hamilton, Mark Sorvari, Emily Lazear, Tom Mooney) is on the bill. I recognize Howard Hamilton’s name, he’s the guy with the million guitars from Red Pens.

Billed as co-headlining Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers with Lucy Dacus … but in reality this is the new project by the three girls as Boygenius. The supergroup will release their Boygenius EP on Matador Records on November 9th.

We’ve seen most of these strong singer/songwriter before, so this should be a really fun, and important, upcoming show.

Omaha’s Cursive will headline the Turf Club on November 17th. The band’s latest Vitriola is out now on 15 Passenger.

We saw Cursive at the now-defunct 400 Bar in Mar 2012 and said, “I thought Cursive's singer Tim Kasher vocals came through loud and clear. Throughout Cursive's set, songs like "This House Alive", "Big Bang", "A Gentleman Caller", "The Cat and Mouse", etc., all blended together without any pause or breaks.”

Brett Dennen will be playing the Cedar on November 18th. We caught him in June 2016 and said, “Brett Dennen is a man with a lot of charisma. He came out bare feet and was just floating with energy. He had the crowd dancing and singing on cue. You can feel his emotion that he poured into these songs, and it was a lot of fun.”

Erin Rae will join the acclaimed singer-songwriter for this show. Originally Nick Mulvey was scheduled.

Singer/songwriter Brett Dennen just headlined the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis last Tuesday (June 7th) in support of his latest album Por Favor. The new record came out May 20th on New Elektra Records.

Firekid

Firekid (stylized as firekid), who opened up the show, is led by singer/songwriter Dillon Hodges from Alabama. Their self-titled album came out in 2015 on Atlantic Records.

When the band took the stage, Dillion jumped into ‘Movin' On’, a wonderful little tune that got the crowd going. Firekid is very good and the music is very upbeat, good performer. At one point during the set, Heidi, the keyboardist, plugs into what appears to be a Gameboy DS. It’s a video game song time for a few quick cover songs, and the best of that one was ‘I'm Blue’ - a crowd jumping pleasing song.

The highlight for the crowd was ‘Boomerang’ and ‘Lay by Me’, two really good songs that went over well with the crowd. There was another point in the show where the band had a chuckle with the song ‘Americana Dream’ and the part about the tambourine. After a slight delay for their final song ‘Die For Alabama’, the band turned the song lyrics to ‘Die For Minnesota’!

The balanced mix of electronica with guitar and drums were well crafted and a show worth watching. Over all, very good music and a wonderful performance, I would recommend seeing them the next time they come to town.

We’ve been writing about Brett Dennen since 2007, when we wrote, “Dennen’s style fits comfortably in the pocket of mainstream folk nouveau, with shades of jam band gaiety (minus the ability to inspire shirtless hackysack). He’s been compared to Jack Johnson and has toured with John Mayer, two musicians that once dominated Top 40 radio but have steadily declined in cultural relevance, occasionally re-emerging as background noise on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy or as man-candy for B-list pop starlets.”

Currently, Dennen is on a national tour, promoting his sixth full-length album Por Favor (New Elektra), and drew in a very good crowd on Tuesday night’s show at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis..

Talking with the crowd before show some fans who have previously seen him, they said that they liked his songs because they are meaningful and were heartfelt. A good example of can be found on ‘She’s Mine’.

For the encore, Brett came out to play two songs solo, and I think the crowd influenced him to play ‘Heaven’, it was pure magic.

One of the greatest band of all time, The Cure will be headlining the Xcel Energy Center next Tuesday, June 7th. The legendary band has numerous hits (expect them to play them all!) including ‘Lovesong’, ‘Friday I’m In Love’, ‘The Love Cats’, ‘Just Like Heaven’, ‘Let’s Go To Bed’, ‘Boys Don’t Cry’, ‘Hot Hot Hot’, etc. The gothy band is actually not so gloomy if you listen to their lyrics carefully.

The Twilight Sad is opening up for all the Cure shows. The tour came together after The Cure’s singer Robert Smith covered The Twilight Sad’s song ‘There’s a Girl In The Corner’ last year. The two bands connected and Smith personally asked the Scottish band to join them on tour.

Last year, The Twilight Sad released their Òran Mór Session LP via FatCat Records.

Brett Dennen is currently on tour in support of his sixth full-length album Por Favor. Dennen explained the title, “When you say please, you’re asking something to come into your life. It might mean that you’re weak and need something to make you strong. But you’re admitting to some sort of weakness or some form of humility. Vulnerable was another word that kept coming up when I was making this record. Is there something I’m scared to say? Can I dig a little deeper, reveal a little bit more? How far can I go? That was my direction, and once I got that in place, I started shooting down things that weren’t in that zone.”

Dennen will be headlining the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis next Tuesday, June 7th.

One of VH1's greatest 100 women of rock, Rickie Lee Jones will be doing a residency over at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis, starting November 4th.

Expect her to play her big hit "Chuck E's In Love" from her 1979 debut album, and jazz standards, and also some cover tracks from her 2012 album The Devil You Know.

Recently, Jones is crowd-sourcing her upcoming album via Pledge Music. This will mark the first album of new material in 10 years! Note that one of the top tier pledges will have a song personalized to you!

He's currently touring to promote the album, and just recently stopped by the "popup experiential event" called The Boulangerie, sponsored by Grey Goose Vodka, in New York City's West Village.

November 8th sees The Besnard Lakes at the Triple Rock in Minneapolis. The new tour marks the first time the band has hit the West Coast since the release of their latest album Until In Excess, Imperceptible UFO. The album was released in March via Jagjaguwar.

Opening up will be Elephant Stone, a band that we previously covered in Minneapolis, noting that he "won over several in the crowd with his spirited solos and weaving late 60’s era Beatles/Kinks sounds with a modern edge."

Brett Dennen - Ain't no Reason

By the time Brett Dennen took the stage Tuesday night at the Bowery Ballroom, the modestly-sized venue had reached standing room capacity.  It was a khaki-colored sea of enthused co-eds, toothy Econ majors clutching plastic cups of Stella, uniformly bopping their heads in stiff rhythmic intervals.  But despite the awkward campus demographic, Dennen’s good boy looks and earnest, chill sensibility made for a jovial, if conventional, pop show.

 

Dennen’s style fits comfortably in the pocket of mainstream folk nouveau, with shades of jam band gaiety (minus the ability to inspire shirtless hackysack).  He’s been compared to Jack Johnson and has toured with John Mayer, two musicians that once dominated Top 40 radio but have steadily declined in cultural relevance, occasionally re-emerging as background noise on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy or as man-candy for B-list pop starlets.  If the shelf life for catchy songwriting of this vein is, roughly, five years, then I would suggest that Dennen enjoy his fruits.  Because, while it’s obvious that the boy has a flair for arousing “woos” and high-fives and beer salutes, I wonder if his music possesses the kind of edge that breeds longevity.

 

Tuesday’s show was all very familiar.  I enjoyed a live version of “Ain’t No Reason,” one of his strongest tracks, and “Darlin’ Do Not Fear” kind of made me want to lace up my Docs and maybe organize an impromptu backyard bonfire.  Had there been a few less imported beers and a few more Dave Matthews covers, I would be convinced that the Bowery is actually a front for a super-secret government time travel experiment that transports unknowing New Yorkers back to their years as Midwest college kids. 

 

Perhaps I’m being unfairly critical.  Lyrically, Dennen is more than a cut above “Your Body is a Wonderland,” which is reason enough to celebrate.  In fact, “Ain’t No Reason” is quite poignant in its simplicity, a gentle meditation on finding meaning from a life resigned to work and pain:  “love will come set me free.”  He believes this.  And perhaps sincerity will be his salvation.  We’ll find out in five years time.
