Emily came on W♥M radio to talk about some news and events.

Vu: I just saw the advance preview for Danny Boyle's "Trance" - a mind-bending thriller, about Simon (played by James McAvoy) who stole the Goya's "Witches' Sabbath" painting and forgot what he did with it. He undergoes hypnotherapist treatment with Elizabeth (played by Rosario Dawson), and that's when the movie enters into this weird surreal part of the film. It's one of those movies, like "Inception", that you want to watch again to try it fully comprehend the picture.

More details on TranceTheMovie.com, movie gets limited distribution this week. Soundtrack is typically really good. The "Trance" Soundtrack featured Rick Smith from Underworld - so it made sense to hear those pulse-pounding beats at the more intense scenes. Smith also co-wrote the movie's theme song, "Here It Comes", with multi-Brit Award winner Emeli Sandé.

You may recall that Danny Boyle put together one of the greatest movie soundtrack for "Trainspotting" (so good that they released part 1 and 2 of the soundtrack) and his personal British music choices for the recent 2012 Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

News: Margaret Thatcher passed away this week (April 8th) to a stroke. Thatcher's uncompromising style of leadership as Prime Minister, left a long lasting bad impression on the people in England…. Particularly on protest singers and songwriters, who wrote and sang anti-Thatcher songs. This is not a complete list, but the songs that I've heard:

News: Record Store Day 2013 is happening next week, April 20th. This year is bigger than ever (I say this every year!), and Emily throws down some of her picks: Mad Season's deluxe double-disc Above on Record Store Day. Mad Season was considered a supergroup, featuring members from Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Screaming Trees.

Big Star is releasing some singles on Record Store Day. This is to coincide with the release of the documentary of Big Star called "Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me", which you can check out the trailer on www.bigstarstory.com. The film was made possible by Kickstarter, which we previously covered.

Husker Du has "Statues"/"Amusement" to be re-issued and Mark Lanegan is teaming up with Moby for "The Lonely Night". Plus, Lanegan will be collaborating with UK folk Duke Garwood for a new album in May.

Topic: Concerts for nostalgic acts are too high! Depeche Mode, Prince, Rolling Stones, etc., they are charging on average about $75 or more for one ticket, which is too much to ask. We're not even talking about hidden "convenience" fee and charges!

Song of the show: The Dandy Warhols's "Bohemian Like You", taken from their breakout album Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia. The album was released 13 years ago, so the band is heading out on tour to do all 13 songs from the Thirteen Tales album this year.

At the moment, only 12 dates are listed. I am assuming the 13th date will be in their original hometown of Portland?

Deluxe Redux: The Faint, Sallie Ford, and Bob Mould

I am actually kind of ashamed to admit to really liking The Faint's album, Danse Macabre, because it sounded so much like Information Society. I am excited to report that Saddle Creek will be reissuing the album in a Deluxe Edition format, for sale on October 30th.

The reissued album will be remastered with six bonus tracks and a DVD. Hardcore fans will want to get their hands on the double vinyl (with CD and DVD). Physical packaging is strictly limited to 5,000 copies (3,000 for the vinyl).

To celebrate its release, the band will start on a promotional tour the first week of November. They are coming back to First Avenue in Minneapolis on December 13th. I saw the band in 2008, and noted that the band puts on a "spectacular light show consisting of part rave, part Casio-crashing, part discotheque, but all fun."

Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside's Dirty Radio is being reissued as a "Deluxe Edition" this September 4th, via Partisan Records. While this re-release doesn't seem to have new packaging or extra discs, it only contains two bonus tracks: "Like A Drug" and "Not An Animal" (both previously unreleased). Dirty Radio is still a terrific album, so if you haven't bought it, perhaps the two bonus tracks might entice you.

The Portland quartet also just announced a new fall tour, starting in Minneapolis' 7th Street Entry.

As I have previously mentioned, Bob Mould is currently on tour to play Sugar's Copper Blue album in its entirety live because of the album's 20th anniversary this year.

His latest album, Silver Age, is coming out September 4th on Merge Records. The first 400 preorders will get a bonus patch!

Bob Mould's previous band, Sugar, is getting a couple of reissues. I am excited about the three-disc Copper Blue from Ryko Disc. The whole album, including four B-Sides and the Beaster EP, have been remastered. The third disc is a live recording of Sugar's Chicago show in 1992.

We ♥ Matt Pinfield. With over 25 years of experience as a radio DJ, television VJ, Pinfield is truly "The Rock and Roll Encyclopedia".

Pinfield is part of Skype's "Join Say it with Skype" upcoming competition to be the Skype house band. This is a great opportunity for young musicians to showcase their music and win a professional studio recording. Judges (and later mentors) will include Matt Pinfield, Pete Wentz (Fall Out Boy) and Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic).

Here's how it works:

• Using a laptop or computer with a webcam, log into Facebook
• Add the Join Say It With Skype app
• Find the "submit a URL of your band" and hit "record a live performance"
• The next step is to just rock out.

IMPORTANT: Bands can submit their entries on the Skype Facebook page until Thursday, June 14 at 11:59 P.M. EST. Winners will be selected and notified on Tuesday, June 19 via email and will be announced publicly on Monday, July 9 at 9:00 A.M. EST.

Besides from "Say it with Skype", Pinfield also talk a little about Dave Kendall and 120 Minutes, how he consume his music (he has a record player in his kitchen).

Song of the show is Gaslight Anthem's "45", which is Matt Pinfield's favorite song at the moment.

Halou announces tour with Bob Mould. We've already covered Mould, so naturally, you guys might want to check out Halou. The tracks I've heard from them, it's quite good.

It Will All Make Sense has a slow buildup, but it really does pick up.

Their music's recently included on two lifey-movies: "This Girl's Life" and "Quality of Life". See press release for full tour dates.

What else is new? More tour dates, this time from El Perro Del Mar.

What's important is that she'll be bringing two Swedish artists for support for these short dates, so I'm looking forward to checking out Lykke Li and Anna Ternheim.

Sad to say, they'll be nowhere near Minneapolis.

W♥M favorites, The Terrordactyls are also going on tour (notably the SXSW show, where every band on Earth will be there.) I think with the recent Juno film, there's been an interest in antifolk.

Guess which CD is also released today? I'll make it easy on you: Bob Mould's District Line.

If you don't know who Bob Mould is, he is probably best known for being the guitarist and singer of Minneapolis's Hüsker Dü. After their breakup, Mould returned with a new rock sound in another influential band called Sugar.

Like most kids from my generation that grew up on "alternative rock", we witness Sugar on 120 Minutes. I remember the first time I heard "Helpless", I ordered the CD when it became available on BMG (I was a big fan of BMG Music Club over Columbia House in the early 90s).

 

Sugar - If I Can't Change Your Mind

I'm including one of their popular song, "If I Can't Change Your Mind" for you to compare to the recent District Line.

District Line, compared to his Sugar work, the only difference I hear is that his voice has matured somewhat. It sounds like he's struggling sometime to sing his notes, but being at his age, he sounds better than most younger singers.

The familiar Sugar-sound is evident in "Who Needs to Dream?", with its constant waves of guitar noise and drums. I think this is going to be my song choice.

Other songs of interest is "The Silence Between Us". I don't want to speculate on this song and lyrics, but I for some reason, I think of Bob Mould and Grant Hart (their differences in opinion split up Husker Du).

I was surprise to hear Mould doing a little experiment in "Shelter Me", featuring some synth and doesn't sound like a typical rock song. Especially with the electronic sound, this song feels very 80s.

The album ends with "Walls In Time", a nice long acoustic number. It goes on for over six minutes before ending with a sweet acoustic plucking.

Just in time for his album's release, Bob Mould also announces that he'll be heading out on tour in March. Although he's currently based out of Washington, DC, I was very pleased to see that he's going to start off his tour in Husker Du's hometown of Minneapolis's legendary First Ave on March 5th.
