New York’s Diet Cig will be in town at the 7th Street Entry, touring in support of their debut record Swear I'm Good At This (Frenchkiss Records).

The duo (crazy girl guitarist Alex Luciano and calm cool collective drummer Noah Bowman) recently played a few sold-out shows in New York in April... and they continue through the Midwest in June.

They’ll be bringing their buddies Sports with them. They are a “4 to 5” piece band from Philadelphia. Sports Go Sports!

Sydney’s Gang of Youths will be in town this Tuesday to bring their lively show to the U.S.A. I confused their band name with one of these bands: Gang of Four, Gang (from Brighton), Gangs, Cairo Gang, the Chain Gang of 1974, and Chain & the Gang (the latter two I’ve often swap names).

Anyway, Gang of Youths’ debut record landed #5 on the Australian album charts (ARIA charts) and notched five ARIA Award nominations, including “Best Rock Album.” The UK seemed to love these guys, so it’s a good indication that they’ll be much bigger as word gets out.

Local duo Dichotomy (Alex and Joe) to open.

We caught Day Wave earlier in May 2016 and said, “Closing out the show was Day Wave, led by band leader Jackson Phillips. The band is fairly new, only forming in 2015 with their debut EP Head Case... but already there’s some great buzz, thanks to online streaming radio Apple Music and word of mouth. In fact, Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus randomly heard one of their songs and instantly became a massive fan.”

Now, armed with a full debut LP, The Days We Had (available on Harvest Records), Phillips is back on tour.

Brooklyn’s Blonder will open. We just caught him in April 2017 and actually wrote that he’s been compared to Day Wave - so it made sense that he is their guest on this tour: “Although the band’s been compared to Day Wave, a newfound fan in the audience described the band as a “Sleepy Strokes”.”

Also local Noaxl added to the bill.

Perth-based band Methyl Ethel headlined the 7th Street Entry on Wednesday, April 12th, touring in support of their Oh Inhuman Spectacle (4AD Records).

Opening the show was local band Graveyard Club, playing shoegazing, synthy songs. We first came across the band in 2014 as opener for The Drums and wrote, “Hometown band The Graveyard Club started the night off with a handful of spooky synth-laced gems and featured main duo Matthew Schufman (vocals/keyboard) and Michael Wojtalewicz (guitarist) alongside newer members Cory Jacobs on drums and Amanda Zimmerman on bass.”

Graveyard Club ended their quick 30-min set with ‘Nightcrawler’, the lead single from their latest record Cellar Door.

Next up was Brooklyn-based Blonder, not to be confused with Milwaukee’s Blonder. The New York Blonder is led by singer/guitarist Constantine Anastasakis, and this show was the first night on the second part of their tour with Methyl Ethel.

Although the band’s been compared to Day Wave, a newfound fan in the audience described the band as a “Sleepy Strokes”. The fan wasn’t wrong, many of their songs, particularly ‘Talk to Me’ sounded as if it was a Strokes song... only on Prozac.

With only a handful of singles, the band played all the songs they’ve released, but throwing in some forthcoming songs and demos they were working on.

After an awkward guitar tuning, the band ended their set with ‘Lean’, which I believe is their first single and one of Frankie Cosmos’ favorite songs.

Australia’s Mythel Ethel closed out the night. We first caught the band opening for Preoccupations (formerly Viet Cong) in October 2016 and noted that the band loves Minneapolis’ friendly people and beautiful buildings. He said that he would love to come back, and as promised, the band was headlining the 7th Street Entry last Wednesday.

While the U.S. has only recently discovered the band last year, the truth is that bandleader Jake Webb started the band three years earlier and locally (Australia) released their debut Oh Inhuman Spectacle in 2014 via Dot Dash Recordings and Remote Control. The band did rather well, winning Best Pop Act in 2015 and Pop Song of 2014 for ‘Rogues’ at the Western Australian Music Industry Awards.

Since making their North American debut at CMJ in 2016, the band re-released Oh Inhuman Spectacle through 4AD Records and working to get their name to the United States audience.

As expected with bands with only one album, the band basically played the entire record with no encores. The band seemed more confident this time around, making bolder dance moves and not afraid to occasionally make a bad joke (like how they were playing their last song only 20 minutes in their set).

If you love their debut Oh Inhuman Spectacle, this is really the perfect tour for you to hear these songs live.

It’s been many, many years (10 years ago) since we wrote about Tinariwen. We noted, “Tinariwen's path to musical stardom is very much linked to the complexity of African politics. Their website provides a detailed history and timeline, both of which I recommend as this band's past is fascinating.... As far as live performances are concerned, their show at the Sage was confident and compelling. This is a group that clearly enjoys their music and have quickly grown a massive following. World music, like world cinema, is a genre that shouldn't really exist. This is folk. This is blues. This is rock and roll.”

The Grammy Award-winning group is finally back on the road to bring awareness to the struggles of Mali and also promote their new record Elwan, available now on Anti- Records.

Dengue Fever to open. We previously talked about this Cambodian band in 2016 when they were on cross promotional tour for The Deepest Lake (Tuk Tuk Records) and the documentary “Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten”.

The band is known for mixing Cambodian rock, Afro grooves, surf, and garage psych, so this should be a good billing.
