French singer Lætitia Sadier (from Stereolab) is back in town, this time billed as the Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble. Her latest record Find Me Finding You is available now on Drag Records.

We previously caught Sadier in 2012 and noted, “Lætitia Sadier came to the 400 Bar in Minneapolis, last night, in support of her latest album, Silencio, out now via Drag City. For those not familiar with Sadier, she is, or rather was, the main singer of Stereolab, a band from London. The band was mostly known for loungey keyboard pop sound with Sadier's distinctive French accent (either sung in French or English).”

Nicholas Krgovich (who we previously mentioned that he also goes by Chris Mastheim in 2014) and DJ Jake Rudh (from Transmission) to open.

The legendary, politically-conscious Australian band Midnight Oil will be making a rare appearance in Minneapolis on Tuesday (over 15 years!). The time has come, a fact's a fact!

If you’re wondering about the long gap in touring, the band broke up in 2002 when vocalist Peter Garrett decided to focus on a solo career.

The Oils reformed in 2009 for a few one-off gigs, but only as of February 2017, did they decide to embark on “The Great Circle 2017” tour. All initial U.S. dates were immediately sold out. Luckily, the band decided to add a few more dates before they call it a day. The iconic group’s last stop on the 2017 tour will be at First Avenue.

To celebrate their return, the group is releasing a new box set to coincide with the tour. The Vinyl Collection will contain all their studio LPs and EPs, plus CDs and music videos.

Melbourne’s The Living End will open.

“We may be senior citizens, but we’ve still f**king got it!” – Captain Sensible

Legendary punk/goth rock band The Damned has embarked on a special 40^th Anniversary Tour, recently selling out the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis, for a raucous reminder that they are not done yet. 

Starting off the evening was equally loud indie pop-punk band Bleached, who we’d seen just last fall, but reminded us that they also played the 7^th Street Entry, an exact year before this opening gig.  The Los Angeles band is actually a duo- sisters Jennifer Clavin and Jessica Clavin (formerly of the band Mika Miko) and rounded out by bassist Micayla Grace and drummer Nick Pillot and is in support of recent EP, Can You Deal? (Dead Oceans Records).

The foursome roared out of the gate for their forty-minute set with the opening, ‘Think of You’, a barrage of punkish noise and attitude and a sound that early incarnations of The Go Go’s and Bangles, would have embraced.  ‘Trying to Lose Myself’ then revved immediately into ‘Keep on Keepin’ On’, a song about not looking back, or having any regrets. 

The songs singer Jennifer Clavin sings are mostly a catharsis of sorts, expelling the hurt from bad relationships, substance abuse and loss, such as “I've been giving in into giving up” on ‘Sour Candy’ but her lyrics and the band’s delivery leave hope for brighter moments ahead, and the overall end result is a noisy, entertaining release of energy and the chance to finally exhale. 

After a dark break, a layer of dry ice-induced fog covered the stage as keyboardist Monty Oxymoron began the set with a moody but relaxed instrumental piece as the rest of The Damned took to the stage for their hundred-minute headlining performance. 

Singer Dave Vanian has aged well, in sharp vest, shirt and suit jacket, black gloved with his moustache ends waxed, while cohort and guitarist Captain Sensible wore plaid pants, a jean vest dotted with band pins and a floppy red beret.  Pinch on drums and Stu West (in Frankenstein t-shirt) mostly kept to the back, keeping the rhythm always in check.

Things got started with an early track, 1979’’s ‘Melody Lee’, Vanian singing into an old style microphone as a phallic symbolled piñata vibrated in place on a back speaker from the reverb and bass. 1982’S ‘Generals’ was next, brought up to date by Vanian dedicating the song to Donald Trump.  A Love cover song was appropriately followed by ‘Love Song’ which led into ‘Second Time Around’ and Sensible cheekily shouting down the few cat calls coming from the crowd.

“Anyone like ‘Strawberries’?”, Sensible asked, not referring to the fruit; rather the band’s 1982 named album, as they jumped into ‘Stranger on the Town’ from that record and the crowd “whoa-oh”-ing on cue.  Sensible then fumbled for the correct term, but got everyone to turn on their cellphone flashlights (as lighters are scarce in the 21^st Century) for a rumbling ‘Wait for the Blackout’.

Things got dialed all the way back to 1976 for the band’s first single, ‘New Rose’, a crunchy quick-paced song, ideal for speeding down highways or crashing cars, following (of course) with their second single, ‘Neat Neat Neat’ to close their main set at the seventy-minute mark.  The crowd though, was not having it, chanting the band’s name until they returned for an encore. 

Sensible took the lead for the playful and melodic ‘Silly Kids Games’ asking the crowd after if they wanted another from him, before he caught himself “what an ego-maniac, how’d you put up with that for forty years?!” then yelled ‘Jet Boy, Jet Girl!’ as the next song of choice. 

After ‘Noise Noise Noise’ and a somewhat embarrassing Bruce Springsteen story by Sensible, the band closed with ‘Smash It Up’- emblazoned on the front of Sensible’s striped long sleeve shirt, but the audience made to wait until late to hear it. 

Wanting even more, the band was coxed out for a second encore culminating in a hard driving ‘Anti Pope’ from 1979, with Sensible dedicating the entire set at the end to Prince, “We’ll never see the likes of him again!” he said in sincere reverence, even trying out a verse of ‘Manic Monday’ before dashing off stage. 

With forty years of music and history behind them, The Damned brought a diverse crowd of fans out to celebrate with them- punks, goths, bikers, baby boomers, Gen X and Y-ers, Brit ex-pats, curious millennials, and more—an obvious sign, that they do, in fact, “still f**king got it”.

Legendary English punk/rock band The Damned is celebrating their 40th Anniversary with an upcoming U.S. tour. Since the influential band don’t really make their way to Minneapolis that often, I feel this is a very important show that you should be aware of. Of course, their many fans agreed, and the show is long sold out.

Expect to hear all chart-topping singles on this tour, including fan-favorites, ‘Love Song’ and ‘Smash It Up’.

No opening band is listed on the venue's website, but the poster lists Bleached. We've been a fan of the sisters in Bleached since 2012 when they opened up for Veronica Falls.

No one is asking “Who is Betty Who?” anymore, seeing as Betty Who has been selling out some U.S. Tour Dates - including this forthcoming appearance at the Triple Rock Social Club this Saturday, April 22nd. We’ve been aware of the pop singer since February 2014 and very happy to see she’s doing quite well with her recent release of The Valley (RCA Records).

Vérité (aka Kelsey Byrne) to open. We previously caught the singer on May 2016 and wrote, “With help from Andrew on drums and Mike on guitars/keys, Vérité basically played almost everything that she’s ever written... and even throwing in a Childish Gambino cover song ‘Sober’ to reach her headlining 45+ min set. Truly it will be the gift that keeps on giving when Leeds quartet The Wedding Present drop by the St. Paul next Saturday, April 22nd for an intimate show at the Turf Club. The Present has been doing their thing now for over 3 decades, effervescent rock with a post-punk flair featuring the delightful British drone of lead singer and only original member David Gedge. Though the band has gone through several line-up changes, one thing remains the same: those fuzzy melodies were made for blasting out your car window while driving the city watching the flowers bloom. Check out The Wedding Present’s newest release 2016’s Going, Going… which was one of my favorites of 2016! But don’t neglect the band’s impressive back catalogue, including Seamonsters (1991), an album recorded at the famous Pachyderm studios in Cannon Falls with your boyfriend’s favorite producer, Steve Albini.

Colleen Green, billed as Colleen Green Band, will warm up the show. The Wedding Present loves these guys, and after seeing her (complete with Vuart) in September 2015, we can see why.

04/23/17 Chaz Bundick (of Toro Y Moi) and psych-jazz duo The Mattson 2 are touring, billed as Chaz Bundick Meets The Mattson 2. The collaboration group will be ending their tour at the Triple Rock Social Club this Sunday. Spin described their music, “between a George Benson and an Al Green.” Madeline Kenney is listed as opener. $15.

04/24/17 COIN (not to be confused with Japanese band Coin) is back at the Triple Rock Social Club next Monday. The band was previously in town at the Go Show in December 2016, and we said “Closing with the kissing anthem ‘Talk Too Much’, the song has received heavy airplay and obviously the crowd’s ear, as they sang along with the band at each chorus.” Coin's How Will You Know If You Never Try will be available everywhere April 21. Arizona to open the show. Yep, the band’s not from Arizona, but it’s definitely a better sounding name than “New Jersey”. $15.50.

Philadelphia’s Beach Slang headlined the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis last week (October 28th).

Hunny (not to be confused with Christian rock band Honey), opened up the show, playing tracks from their Pain/Ache/Loving EP. The last time we saw the band in October 2015, they did not have all their band members... no so on this current tour. As you can see from the photo, all six band members were accounted for (Jason, Jake, Joey, Jacob, Gregory, and Kevin).

Being first band on the bill is tough, as we have previously mentioned, and the band made a point to thank people for showing up early... and every so often would mention the band’s name.

Next up was Bleached (not to be confused with Christian band Bleach). The first time we saw them (and probably their first Minneapolis show?) in 2012, before their debut album Ride Your Heart came out, I wrote that I really love the band: “Their music and attitude is that of 90s garage rock, a bit of punk as well.”

The two sisters Jennifer Clavin and Jessica Clavin were previously in Mika Miko, another band that I wrote about in 2008 and recommended their music.

The stage was dressed in roses and lit-up lights as the band came on stage to play some songs from their latest Welcome the Worms. Midway into their set, they covered The Misfits’ ‘Skulls’... just in time for the Halloween spirit, of course.

Although billed as Beach Slang (not to be confused with Christian metal band Sinai Beach .... sorry had to keep the theme alive!), it really was a solo acoustic tour from singer and songwriter James Alex. It made sense, given that it’s hard to get everyone on the same page when it comes to touring. After all, most people have work and obligations. It also gave Alex more freedom to play whatever he wanted, especially if the band didn’t know the right chords for some cover songs, etc... as a result, Alex’s set changes from night to night.

Setlist

For the Minneapolis show, it was quite special, first, as it was close to Halloween, Alex showed up with KISS’ Paul Stanley makeup. Also, given that Alex is a massive The Replacements, he pleased the fans by playing a lot of ‘Mats cover songs.

As you can see on the photograph of his setlist, he did not follow it at all. In fact, the setlist was more of a suggestion rather than a roadmap. Before the fourth song (The Replacements’ ‘Alex Chilton’), Alex finally spoke, “I’m from Philadelphia, but I feel like I’m home here!”

The first time we saw Beach Slang, when they were on tour for their Find People Who Feel Like Us record in Sep 2015, we knew they were big ‘Mats fans. They were touring with the Replacements’ bassist Tommy Stinson, and confessed that “Every record I own is from here [Minneapolis],” referring to the Replacements, Prince and Hüsker Dü.

If you’re a punk rock, Minneapolis-rock fan, this is a great, fun, singalong show to attend.

Philadelphia’s Beach Slang is touring in support of their new album A Loud Bash Of Teenage Feelings (Polyvinyl Records). We’ve seen the band a few times, the last being April 2016 and wrote, “The members of Beach Slang seemed just as shocked as I was at the sheer amount of people that came out to see them on a Monday night. It wasn't a sold out show but it sure was packed for this new band. Once they started playing, it all made sense. I understood why so many people decided to venture out on a Monday night to see them.”

Co-headlining with the band will be Los Angeles’ Bleached. We caught the Bleached sisters in 2012 and noted, “I like Bleached. But then again, I do have a thing for grrrl rock. Their music and attitude is that of 90s garage rock, a bit of punk as well.”

Hunny to open. We also have seen this band before, they were in town in October 2015 and we said, “Normally it is tough to be the first band on the bill, but not for California's six-piece band Hunny. By the time the band took the stage at 6:15pm, the dancefloor was surprisingly packed.”

London quartet The Boxer Rebellion will be headlining the Turf Club in St Paul this Friday, October 28th. The band’s fifth album Ocean By Ocean is out now via Absentee Recordings/Kobalt (available on iTunes).

The band took their name from the anti-Christian uprising in China in the early 1900s. Check out Chang Cheh's 1976 Boxer Rebellion film. Shaw Brothers film fans should know that Cheh is famously known for his entertaining Venoms films.

New York’s sister-act Hey Anna (Anna and Erin on keyboards/rhythm guitar and Katie on bass) will be on the bill. This band came to our attention along with Hey Ocean! and Hey Marseilles in 2013. Now, go sing ABBA’s ‘Hey, Hey Helen’.

Lissie (Elisabeth Maurus) is back on tour, this time in support of her third album My Wild West (Lionboy Records and Thirty Tigers).

Welwyn Garden City’s rock/punk band The Subways will be in town next Saturday, April 23rd, in support of the self-titled album (their fourth album). For the US tour, the trio (Billy Lunn – guitar, vocals; Charlotte Cooper – bass, vocals; Josh Morgan – drums) will be selling specially numbered LP edition of their record.

They’re quite proud of their new record, Lunn explained, “100% The Subways, it’s all us, we wrote, produced, and mixed the album ourselves.”

Opening will be Manchester’s five-piece Pins. We previously saw the all-girls band and wrote that they “lived up to their moniker, playing a sharp, diamond-in-the-rough hour-long set at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis.”

BEACH 119 beach119.com/ Remember Superstorm Sandy? In case you already forgot, there is a forthcoming documentary short called "Beach 119" (watch the trailer on Youtube). The documentary follows a tribe of survivors from the Rockaway Peninsula in the aftermath of Sandy. The documentary short has been submitted for consideration to various 2013 spring film festivals. The Beach 119th Street Angels group was founded by Marcie Allen and Jessica Beutler, who directed the documentary. The team raised over $100,000 to help purchase generators, heaters, kitchen appliances, cleaning supplies, meals and drinks, etc.
