Near the front row of the Bikini Kill show, a thirteen-year-old girl who came with her mother was having the best night of her life. Singer Kathleen Hanna held up the girl’s zine and told everyone in the audience to check out her Instagram page, too. It was like this all night—in between the rock, of course—an all-ages, all-gender, democratic lovefest spearheaded by Hanna, Kathi Wilcox, and Tobi Vail, along with touring guitarist Sara Landeau. If the first Sex Pistols show made everyone in the audience want to start their own band, this concert, from the stalwarts of ‘90s feminist punk rock and rockstars of the riot grrrl scene, made me want to reunite mine (we never actually played any gigs), make a zine, get out the vote, and spread hope and DIY vibes enough to lift up the world. It was a punk rock feminist manifesto night, but it also felt so warm and cuddly.

I’m always desperate to catch a beloved band like Bikini Kill when they reunite and go on tour, like the band first did in 2019 after a 23-year absence. I always fear it’ll be my last-ever chance to see legends live. But as I’ve learned with many other reunion tours, the good vibes seem to never end. Lucky for me. From their 2019 Palladium show in Los Angeles, to their Mosswood Meltdown Festival appearance in Oakland in 2022, or this stop in San Francisco, Hanna’s voice and the band’s live sound as a whole have grown tighter, completely self-assured, and with an ease and playfulness that excites the faithful of every demographic.

Not only can you rely on Hanna’s melodic rock wails amid the band’s steady riffs, you can also count on her onstage presence. Dressed in a glittery outfit with flouncy ruffles (think junior high prom queen of the ‘90s), Hanna’s melodic rock wails twinned with the band’s steady riffs, playing hits from every album in their arsenal, with ample opportunities to scream along, be you “Rebel Girl,” maybe looking for that Motley Crue mirror at the “Carnival,” or “Reject(ing) All American.” And Hanna’s infectious dance is of the kind that makes you want to dance exactly like this after the show, by yourself, in your bedroom—a kind of upbeat, bopping rock jig that’s a little silly but somehow also effortlessly cool, at least when you watch it onstage, singing your favorite ‘90s feminist anthems.

The band cycled through their greatest hits like the aforementioned, along with “Demi Rep” (the collab with Joan Jett), “Suck My Left One” just before “Rebel Girl” for the encore, and “Jigsaw Youth.” But the between-song banter also felt cathartic, energizing, and full of hope and gratitude for how far the band, and its fans, have come after all these years. Seeing four women of rock commanding the stage, sharing stories, engaging the crowd of all genders and ages in songs of strength and defiance and honesty feels especially essential during another scary election year in the U.S. The past is present, and the future is here. And on this night, I’m with her, and her, and her, and her.

The dream of the Riot Grrrl ‘90s scene is still alive, and you’re in luck, ‘cos one of the stalwarts of the scene, Bikini Kill, is on tour this year in the U.S. and abroad. After a springtime South American tour, followed by a visit to Europe and the UK, the band hits the road all over the U.S., hitting different cities throughout the West Coast, Midwest, and Eastern seaboard. Guitarist Sara Landeau joins founding members Kathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail, and Kathi Wilcox, so expect the scintillating grooves and likely some politically-charged banter between songs as we hurtle towards another contentious presidential election. There’s no new album to promote, so fans can gear up for their favorite hits and, hopefully, some deep cuts for the diehards. Supporting acts for the U.S. leg haven’t yet been announced, but tickets are on sale now, so gear up now for revolution, girl-style, yeah!

Meanwhile, a technology news agency called The Verge recently published a Bikini Kill article called Bikini Kill is making things again (published February 1st). …

As you know, we’re big fans of Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, Julie Ruin, riot grrrls… so it it was a delight to read Kathleen Hanna’s memoir Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk. The book came out in mid-May and became an instant New York Times Bestseller. You can find the book at your favorite book store... even Target has the book, next to Taylor Swift’s book, of course.

The book is written by Hanna, in her own voice, so it was a very easy read. She has a surprisingly good memory, writing about herself when she was the lead role of Annie in a local school play. She was generous with photos of her life, which are sprinkled throughout the book.

The first part of the book reveals a lot of personal family details. Everything from her sister “Goodtimes”, to her father leaving (and blaming Hanna breaking up the family), to when her mother started having an affair with the veterinarian, to when she was a nudie dancer (she even has photos of her stripper costume). Things like that, I would be too embarrassed by them… but not Kathleen Hanna. You can tell that all these things made her who she is.

For most fans, they might be more interested in the second half of the book, which covers her when she formed her first band. It’s their first tour and they played some dead shows, but the one in Minneapolis, she had noted how Babes in Toyland hooked them with a decent gig. They were opening for an AC/DC cover band, and that group’s singer said to Hanna, “You’re not even a real band. You’re just a novelty band. The only reason you got this show is because you’re girls.” I had to laugh. Like he would know, being in a real band.

When the Riot Grrrls movement exploded, thanks to Hanna’s band Bikini Kill band, songs like “Rebel Girl” became an anthem. That movement and music style inspired a generation of girl bands then and now.

Punk/pop Skating Polly, a young band featuring stepsisters Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse with Kelli’s brother Kurtis, headlined the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis. The trio previously were endorsed and toured with punk legends X and Minneapolis’ grrrl punk band Babes in Toyland (we’ll get to that in a second!), but now headlining in support of their new record Chaos County Line. This was the first night of the tour.

Opening the show was Surly Grrly (a band led by Medbh McNamara & Eloïse Boigenzahn), who wasn’t originally on the bill. We previously liked them with the Aquadolls in May 2023, describing them as “very Bikini Kill”.

They’ve changed up their setlist a bit (as well as hiring a new bassist Lou Levy) since we last saw them, starting with “I Had Sex with a Girl”, a song that they’ve previously mentioned that most guys who come up to them said they’ve had the very same experience.

Highlight of their set was a cover of Babes in Toyland’s “Sweet 69”.

Next up was Bugsy, who we saw lead singer/guitarist Emily Schoonover lending her musical talent to Dad Bod in Oct 2022: “The Minneapolis-based band normally has Grace Baldwin for bass, but for the October 24th show, she was out celebrating her birthday. Instead, Emily Schoonover from Bugsy stepped in at the last minute.” Dad Bod liked Emily so much, they joked that they wanted Emily as a permanent band member.

Bugsy (Emily Schoonover, Shannon Maroney, Alex Norman and Griffen Desai) seemed to drew in the local crowd, which isn’t a surprise, considering how much love they get on TikTok. The band is fairly new, starting with their debut EP Teratoma in 2020 (during the pandemic).

Their latest single, “Slip N' Slide” is out now, and it may or may not be appearing in a new 2023 EP that the band is working on. In the meantime, you can hear their songs on their national tour with Skating Polly.

Closing out the set was Skating Polly. We first saw the band in May 2017 and wrote, “The history of Skating Polly actually started in 2009, when the two step-siblings, Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse were just 9 and 14, respectively. While we were curious about the duo, having written about them last year, the band made a big change in their DIY band in 2017: they added their brother Kurtis Mayo to the lineup.”

Then, four months later, in Sep 2017, we saw them again with X. As we previously mentioned, X was a big fan of the trio and asked them to tour with them for their 40th Anniversary as a band.

Six years later, Skating Polly is back with Chaos County Line, as they’ve matured from punk/riot music to more art-punk and even piano-driven power-pop, as found on the new record. As you can see from the setlist, the band mostly stuck to the new songs, but that’s fine, as my favorite song on their set was the energized “Hickey King”, which was played early in their set, with both Kelli and Peyton trading off vocals. Peyton had the nice lyrics, while Kelli had the much meaner lyrics.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Catie Turner will be headlining the 7th Street Entry on June 21st. She previously was here with Valley in March 2022.

Her latest song, “Hometown” is described as “about when you feel unsafe and unfamiliar in what is supposed to be the most familiar place in the world, all because of a failed relationship.” Turner continues, “The fear of them seeing you, and you seeing them, so you hide out in your bedroom. This goes out to everyone who has worn their hood up on an outing to WaWa or refused to go to Trader Joe’s because they didn’t want to run into their ex’s mom!”

We last saw Skating Polly in Sep 2017 and noted, “On tour for this special 40th Anniversary Tour is riot grrrl/punk band Skating Polly from Tacoma (by the way of Oklahoma City). The band is actually a sibling band, featuring multi-instrumentalist step-siblings Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse… and recently added their brother Kurtis Mayo as drummer to the lineup. We caught the trio in May 2017 and wrote that the show felt like it was sold out, thanks to their growing fanbase and support from local artists. In fact, members of local bands like Babes in Toyland (Skating Polly support Babes in a 2015 European tour), Tony Peachka, and Kitten Forever, could be seen in attendance. ‘Hail Mary’ was dedicated to Babes and “a kiss for Lori.” (Lori Barbero).”

Los Angeles’ The Aquadolls is currently on their “Spring Fling” tour, stopping by 7th Street Entry, in Minneapolis, on Saturday night.

We weren’t originally scheduled to cover the Aquadolls, having previously committed to Dave Mason at the Pantages Theatre on this night… but we worked out our tight schedule to see both shows, but that meant missing out on the opening bands for Aquadolls.

On the day of the show, Mason announced his show’s rescheduling, due to illness... so, the good news was that we could see all the bands on the all-ages Aquadolls show.

Starting the show was local band Surly Grrly, who was last seen with The Dollyrots and the Von Tramps in March 2023. The queercore band is fronted by Medbh McNamara and Eloïse Boigenzahn, who takes most of the spotlight in their set, by trading lead vocals on certain songs.

They have a very Bikini Kill sound, with songs like “Piss Boy” and “Hey Little Girl.”

There were two covers in their set, the first was Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time” (but done in the style of Slothrust), and Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name.”

Next up was trio Allergen (front by Shannon Maroney with Mia on bass and Anna on drums), who was last seen with The Aquadolls and Sitting On Stacy in April 2022.

Shannon didn’t talk much between sets, except to make brief comments whenever they’re tuning their instruments. For example, you get the impression that they didn’t want to use social media… but in the modern age, they’re forced to use these tools to get their music out. We can relate, having abandoned a Facebook for many years. So, if you search for the group, they’re using “Allgerg3n” to stand out.

It looks like their last release was called Honesty Hour in 2020, but since then, they’ve released a few demo collections and a new single called “Dirt”.

The Aquadolls (Melissa Brooks, Keilah Nina, Jacqueline Proctor) closed out the show, stepping on the stage to their intro music of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” We never knew the origin of the band’s name, but having heard the cheesy line “I’m a Barbie Girl in a Barbie World…”, it suddenly made sense.

Over ten years ago, band leader Melissa Brooks formed The Aquadolls to channel her angst through music, which were influenced from pop music to riot grrrl.

You can tell they admire women that came before them in music, such as The Go-Go’s, which they did their faithful version of “Vacation.” We have to admit that Jacqueline Proctor does a pretty good Belinda Carlisle.

They also love Australian alternative band Lash, based on their cover of “Take Me Away”, which most Americans would have heard through actress Christina Vidal (with Lindsay Lohan) singing the song in the 2003 Freaky Friday film. The funny thing is that the original line “It’s the same old sh**, never ends” was replaced with “It’s the same old stuff, never ends,” because it’s a Disney film. Of course, we got the full original Lash version when Aquadolls plays it. As a cover lover, we approved of this cover.

The rest remaining set had some songs from the forthcoming Charmed album, including “Far Far Away,” which Melissa described as “a fairytale twist on the working class, discussing that the only person who can truly save you is yourself” and “Beachy”, which was the penultimate song.

Charmed will be available June 2nd, via Enci Records.

Irish indie rock band, The Academic, is touring in support of their sophomore album, Sitting Pretty. The album was produced by award-winning former Kaiser Chiefs member, Nick Hodgson at London’s Snap Studios.

Sitting Pretty is described as a journey into adulthood, “It’s about finding your feet, feeling the weight of time passing on your shoulders, and trying to enjoy the good times and meaningful relationships along the way.”

The Academic’s first headline US tour will stop by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on April 18th. The band previously was in town supporting Judah & The Lion, in Sep 2017.

You guys know we love Bikini Kill. We often considered Kathleen Hanna as the one that started the whole Riot Grrrls movement… and we worship the grounds she walks on. We have followed her through her various projects, such as Julie Ruin and Le Tigre (our personal favorite).

One of the biggest disappointment when we heard the BK reunion tour in 2019 was that they weren’t playing Minnesota at all. Many diehard fans bought tickets to the nearest town in Wisconsin. For those who waited this long, and yes, through the COVID cancellations… We’re very excited to say that Bikini Kill will be finally playing Minnesota, in St Paul, at the Palace Theatre, this April 20, 2023.

We caught Julie Ruin in Lincoln Hall (09 April 2014) and wrote, “The importance of Grrl Power was emphasized when Hanna told the story of how she met guitarist Sara Landeau at a Girls Rock Camp. She told a funny tale of how the two of them were roadies for a girl band performance and how people watching them plug in the equipment and set-up the amps, etc. assumed they were bitchy stage moms, but “No, we’re roadies!” And she explained how during band camp, the girls write their own song and then perform it, and this band’s song was called, “Good Luck, You Suck”: “It was really good. We should cover it.” She was visibly touched when she was told that a couple of the teenage girls in attendance were current rock campers, and she talked about how she believes that the younger generation has their act together so much better than her generation – but that she hopes that her generation did a thing or two that will inspire the younger generation too.”

Although original drummer Steve Hewitt left the band in 2007, I don't think anyone missed him on this tour... I have to say that new drummer Steve Forrest did an amazing job, spending the entire set shirtless to show off his various tattoos. The massive grin on his face tells me that this was a job that he love doing.”

Mo Lowda & The Humble will be headlining the 7th Street Entry on April 21, 2023.

Illiterate Light will open the show. The duo (singer-guitarist Jeff Gorman and drummer Jake Cochran), is touring in support of their new album Sunburned, out now via Thirty Tigers.

The album’s single, “Hellraiser,” can be heard on YouTube and speaking about the song, Gorman said, “‘Hellraiser’ is not an autobiographical song. Much of our new record is autobiographical and emotionally intimate, but Hellraiser is a different beast. It came about while I was conducting a series of psychological experiments on myself after reading a chapter of the Red Book by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. The song is a voodoo gumbo of my own subconscious grappling with uninitiated masculinity, pain vs pleasure, and a childhood love of horror films. I wrote the form and lyrics, Jake played keys and drums, and we embraced the studio in a new way, rejecting previous limitations we’d put on ourselves.”

Award-winning folk artist Ellis Paul is on his 30th Anniversary tour, stopping by the Icehouse in Minneapolis on April 23rd, 2023. The artist never thought he would make it 30 years, after his 2020 diagnosis with Dupuytren’s contracture… but it appears Paul is going strong on this tour. Every riot grrrl fan is excited about Bikini Kill coming to St Paul this April 20th… so it’s even more exciting to hear that Kathleen Hanna’s art/dance project Le Tigre have reformed to launch their first tour in 18 years! Unfortunately, they’re not stopping by Minneapolis this year… but there’s always hope for next year.

I’ve seen Le Tigre twice, including their big First Avenue show in August 2005, writing, “The end of their set was really, really fun, they played all the hits: "Hot Topic", "TKO", and the finale "Deceptacon".”

I’ve been a “top fan” for French artist Yelle since I heard the song “Je Veux Te Voir”.

It was announced recently that Yelle’s new single, “Top Fan” is out now. I recently saw the official music video on YouTube and, as always, they are truly amazing.

The single is taken from their fourth album L'ère Du Verseau (aka The Age Of Aquarius) – their first new album in 6 years, that came out in 2020… Unfortunately due to the pandemic, they were not able to come to America for a tour.

Now that the pandemic is over, the upcoming Yelle tour will start at the end of February in Washington DC’s 9:30 Club, and will stop in New York for 2 Elsewhere dates, before going to the west coast to play Los Angeles and end at San Diego’s influential CRSSD Festival.

The 501(c)3 non-profit organization Women In Music announced in person chapter events for their third annual educational Summit, taking place next week, January 25-27. In person events already started on January 24 and will continue until the 27th… featuring chapters in Nashville, Chicago, Boston, and Denver in addition to the online programming scheduled from January 25-27.

The highlight for me is that Molly Neuman, from Bratmobile, will hold a panel. She’ll be discussing her career path as a drummer in Bratmobile, part of the massively influential riot grrrl movement of the 1990s.
