We saw Farewell Milwaukee in Mar 2009 and wrote, “I like to begin reviews with a clever anecdote to draw in my readers. It’s fun for everyone, but especially fun for me because I consistently amuse myself. When Farewell Milwaukee played the Fine Line, I knew singer Ben Lubeck looked really familiar; not in the sense that I had stalked him on Facebook or met him IRL (In Real Life) or even that I’d seen the band perform before (I had). The reason why he looked familiar is because he is Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. I kid you not, readers; Ben Lubeck is tall, lanky, shaggy-haired Shags. The resemblance is uncanny, although I sincerely hope that he doesn’t take offense by this comment (I don’t know why he would since Shaggy drove an amazing green van AND solved mind-boggling mysteries).”

We saw Ber in Aug 2024 and wrote, “Highlight of her set was her cover of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.” The original song was somewhat of a duet, the boy parts sung by Goyte, while the girl part was by Kimbra. The first part of the song, you only hear the perspective of Goyte… it isn’t until Kimbra comes in, do you hear the story from her perspective. It’s really a sad and emotional song, and was faithfully covered by Ber… except she sings both parts.”

We saw Big Head Todd at the Palace Theatre in Jan 2018 and said, “Todd Park Mohr and band (Brian Nevin– drums; Rob Squires– bass; Jeremy Lawton– keys / pedal steel) have been a band for thirty-two years now and made their new album, New World Arisin’ (on the band’s own Big Records) “to show we still could” and Big Head Todd and the Monsters still showed their formidable live chops with a two-hour set of the band’s own unique blend of Colorado rock, blues, and soul. In front of a trippingly-illustrated backdrop and amongst simple but effective lighting, the foursome took to the stage beginning with a cut from one of Mohr’s biggest guitar heroes, Jimi Hendrix. BHTM mostly let the music do the talking, eager not only to play songs from the new album, but also to work in as many crowd favorites in, as possible too.”

With a blanket of snow on the ground and frigid temps still in the air, the New Year brings a new beginning- renewed hopes and dreams of a New World Arisin’ and Big Head Todd and the Monsters aims to help provide its soundtrack, as evidenced by their very well-received recent headlining set at the Palace Theatre in downtown St. Paul.

The blues often sounds best when served hot on a cold night and that was the case as a good friend of the headliners, Chicago-based guitarist Ronnie Baker Brooks opened with a sizzling full hour with his band, including an absolute Monster on bass (literally, as BHTM’s Jeremy Lawton provided the bottom end). Brooks previously joined up on the band’s last Blues Club tour, which hit town in late 2016.

Brooks displayed his own formable guitar chops (inherited from his father, the late Lonnie Brooks) and is in support of his latest full-length, Times Have Changed (Provogue Records) “…they certainly have”, Brooks mused before playing the title track, even bringing Todd Park Mohr on stage early, for the new album’s collaboration, ‘Doing Too Much’.

During a jumping Muddy Waters cover, Brooks asked the crowd to join along which they did tepidly at first, with Brooks remarking, “that was all right… for Iowa!” after which, the crowd learned their lesson. Brooks remains proud of his latest record, the last recording to feature his father as well as Bobbie “Blue” Bland and proudly continues the blues tradition of his father and forefathers.

‘Bittersweet’, one of the musical benchmarks from 1993’s breakout album, Sister Sweetly, still resonates emotionally as well as sonically, with 1997’s ‘Please Don’t Her’ sounding like a musical next chapter.

BTHM was clever in showing their other musical influences as the set progressed, working part of a Marvin Gaye classic into their own ‘It’s Alright’’ and an instrumental Led Zeppelin passage as they dialed way back to place it in seamlessly on the back end of 1990’s ‘Moose Song’.

The heavy gospel title track of the new album, was prefaced by Mohr speaking the song’s chorus “There’s a New World Arisin’…but that old world will fight you, ‘til your dyin’ day”, underscoring his most dominant lyrical theme of conflict and feeling trapped, and the main set ended with biggest hit, ‘Broken Hearted Savior’.

The three-song encore began with new track, ‘Glow’ which Mohr actually composed twenty years ago- “turn the hurt into a song” he wailed vocally as well as on guitar. 1993’s ‘Circle’ followed, and the evening ended as it began, with a Jimi Hendrix cover, as Ronnie Baker Brooks rejoined on stage to put the exclamation point on things, Mohr singing “I took my spirit and I crashed those mirrors, and now the whole world is there for me to see”.

For better or worse, 2018 is here, a New World Arisin’, but with legacy bands like Big Head Todd and the Monsters still in fine musical form, this year already looks to be better than the last.

After a year of hiatus, husband and wife duo Tennis came back strong earlier in 2017. We caught the band in March 2017 and mentioned how singer Alaina Moore was pleased at the turnout and fan support.

Their latest release We Can Die Happy came out November 10th on Mutually Detrimental/Thirty Tigers.

Opening up for Tennis will once again be duo Overcoats (Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell). They’re constantly changing their live performance, from playing live instruments to weird Karaoke performance.

If you saw them in March, I would hazard a guess that they will do a similar setup: pre-recorded music over harmonizing vocals, dressed in angelic white clothing.

Overcoats’ debut album Young is out now on Arts & Crafts.

With the Chicago Cubs winning their first World Series in 108 years, it was perfectly understandable that the party continue on another night—

And with the Big Head Blues Club in town at the Cedar Cultural Center celebrating Chicago blues legend Willie Dixon and others, the blues never sounded so celebratory and stirring.

The collective has actually become a re-occurring foray for Colorado group Big Head Todd and the Monsters as they pay homage and are joined on stage by some of the blues legends that inspired their own music.

The new album is Way Down Inside: Songs of Willie Dixon (on their own Big Records) and even if you’re not familiar with the pioneering artist they are authoring, any listening to early Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Rolling Stones, etc., clearly shows how much of an impact the blues in general, and Dixon in particular, have influenced all of their sounds.

This installment (the first album covered Robert Johnson) sees Todd and band joining up with three second-generation blues stars- Mud Morganfield, Billy Branch, and Ronnie Baker Brooks as well as guest vocalist Erica Brown, for a rousing two-hour show that showed why the art form is so vital and influential.

Morganfield, the eldest son of Muddy Waters, got things started by taking the reins for ‘I Want to be Loved’, dressed in a dapper suit, smiling and sitting while singing. Three-time Grammy nominee Billy Branch was next, spotlighted on ‘Good Advice’, and who knew Dixon better than others as he did a stint as harmonica player in his Blues All-Stars band.

Ronnie Baker Brooks was solid all night on guitar, he the son of Chicago blues master Lonnie Brooks and letting his guitar cry on the soulful ‘My Love Will Never Die’.

Todd Park Mohr took us through what is maybe the first blues mash-up as he combined three versions of the classic ‘Spoonful’ then each told short stories around a killer ‘I’m a Hoochie Coochie Man’, a song that almost singlehandedly defines the blues.

After a stomping ‘Pretty Thing’ (featuring whistling and that classic Bo Diddley guitar rumble) Erica Brown pounced on stage to help sing ‘That Same Thing’, jumping and crying out like someone half her age, then disappeared again as quickly. Though Dixon was the focus of the night, his Chess Records label mate, Buddy Guy couldn’t be ignored (also being from Chicago) and was also honored with a cover of ‘Let Me Love You Baby’.

With all the recent social and political unrest, Billy Branch’s take on 1971’s ‘It Don’t Make Sense’ seemed as much or more relevant today, than when it was originally written. Morganfield reprised his father’s role, taking the lead for a rousing ‘You Need Love’ (which Led Zeppelin shamelessly stole for ‘Whole Lotta Love’) which closed the main set and on ‘Trouble No more’ for the encore.

The stage filled with everyone joining in for the evening finale of ‘Wang Dang Doodle’, with Brown’s voice raising to the rafters on the chorus and sung mostly to Chicago “leading lady of the blues” Barbara LeShoure, who was in attendance, watching from a wheelchair just off stage.

“The blues are the roots, the rest are the fruits”, it was said from the stage and no truer words were spoken, especially after witnessing this show.

For blues fans, this show is a no-brainer to attend; for everyone else, rest assured that this installment of the Big Head Blues Club is not only an elite combination of musicians to witness, but a history lesson as well into a unique American art form, and is one of the most musically satisfying shows of the year.

Platinum-recording artist Big Head Todd and the Monsters is teaming up with three second-generation blues stars, Mud Morganfield, Billy Branch and Ronnie Baker Brooks, to form the Big Head Blues Club. Their new album Way Down Inside is an in-depth tribute to Willie Dixon.

This is a very unique collaboration, and singer Todd (the big head himself), explains, “Willie Dixon was a great writer, an incredible bass player, a great thinker and a beautiful guy. He tends to get overlooked because so much of what he did was behind the scenes, but he was definitely one of the most important songwriters in American music. He always professed that the blues is an accurate mirror of human life, and his subject matter ranged from politics to love songs and everything in between. So I'm excited to be able to tell more people about Willie Dixon with this project.”

Muuy Biien’s record release party for Age Of Uncertainty happens on November 2^nd at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, GA. The show will start with performances by Bambara and Hello Ocho.

Age Of Uncertainty is an enticingly sinister work of avant garde genius, sung with a sneer. This album is a departure from the band’s previous post-punk catalog, deftly combining avant jazz and punk. They are currently touring in support of the new record.

Muuy Biien is well known for their live shows. Lead vocalist Joshua Evans struts and swaggers about the stage, larger than life and totally in command of everyone watching.

This is going to be a night of charismatic frontmen who command attention. Bambara’s lead singer/guitarist Reid Bateh has a fierce onstage demeanor, pouring every ounce of his angst into his vocals, his guitar and about 16 different effects pedals. He uses these tools like the conductor of an orchestra to create layer upon layer of haunting experimental sounds.

Bambara is currently touring in support of their album Swarm, released this spring.

Atlanta’s Hello Ocho will kick off the evening with their own unique style of jazzy psychedelia. Their latest record, The Slippery Hand EP, was released in September.
