Seemingly an ageless wonder, “The Girl from Ipanema” has passed on,

Astrud Gilberto, whose vocal performance on the first song she ever recorded, “The Girl From Ipanema,” helped bring the lasting wave of Brazilian bossa nova into the 1960’s mainstream, died on Monday at the age of 83.

Gilberto’s son Marcelo confirmed she had died and asked their family friend and musician Paul Ricci to post the news on Facebook.

Gilberto recorded that famous song while married to the father of Brazilian bossa nova, singer/guitarist João Gilberto in 1963. While rehearsing in NYC with jazz performer Stan Getz during the recording for the classic Getz/Gilberto album, she recorded the version of the song that would make her famous for the rest of her life, hitting #5 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, winning the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, and the album winning three Grammys, including Album of the Year.

Astrud Weinert was born on March 29, 1940, in Bahia, Brazil, to a German father, Fritz Weinert and Brazilian mother, Evangelina Weinert, both educators. Her parents would move the family to Rio and she became interested in music, meeting João Gilberto at age 19 and marrying him several months later.

Fellow musician Vinicius de Moraes actually wrote the original lyrics for “The Girl from Ipanema,” named after a beachside neighborhood in Rio where he and Antônio Carlos Jobim both watched a beautiful woman regularly walk by.

Gilberto would have increasing tensions within her marriage, resulting in an affair with Getz and an eventual divorce; but musically, she would sign as a solo performer with Verve Records with her first solo album from 1965, earning her a Grammy Award nomination. She would continue to record, ever popular in the US, but never as equally regarded with Brazilian critics.

Gilberto recorded eighteen studio albums, numerous compilations, and collaborations with the likes of Gil Evans, the James Last Orchestra, and a duet with George Michael on “Desafinado” for the AIDS-related benefit album, “Red Hot Rio”, effectively retiring after 2002’s final album, “Jungle”.

Astrud Gilberto is survived by her musician sons Marcelo Gilberto and Gregory Lasorsa, and two granddaughters.

 

Related, one of João Gilberto’s daughters from a following marriage, Bebel Gilberto, is a longtime bossa nova/jazz musician in her own right and plays the Parkway Theater in Minneapolis this August (though usually stops at the Dakota Jazz Club downtown).

As a longtime The Sandman comic book fan, you can say I'm a Neil Gaiman fan. I've attended many of his book signings (but not his final book tour), met him countless time ... and I usually see him when he randomly appears at Amanda Palmer's concerts (which, incidentally, Palmer will be returning to Minneapolis on 11/16).

Gaiman will be appearing as a guest, along with My Brightest Diamond (aka Shara Worden) on Wits, an American Public Media radio show on Minnesota Public Radio, recorded live with host John Moe.

My Brightest Diamond will be interviewed and playing some tracks from her new album This Is My Hand, which is out now on Asthmatic Kitty Records. If you miss this show, fear not, My Brightest Diamond will be returning to Minnesota at the Cedar Cultural Center on November 17. If you miss Neil Gaiman at this show, fear not, he will be appearing Magers And Quinn Booksellers on November 9th at 2pm (free if you don't mind standing room).

Brooklyn based electro-pop St. Lucia are currently on their "The Night Comes Again Tour" in support of their debut album When The Night. St. Lucia was last in town originally at a smaller capacity 7th Street Entry... but when tickets sold out, the band got upgraded to the Fine Line Music Café in 2014. This time around, they are expecting to outsell the Fine Line, and their show is being held at a much larger main room at First Avenue.

Special guest Vacationer will open this show. We've seen Vacationer before in 2012, and I noted that my favorite song on their set was "Trip", with weird warp effects. At the time of that writing, they only had one EP, but it would seem that Vacationer is back in 2014 with already a sophomore album Relief.

The Girl From Ipanema

If you need someone to blame every time you hear “The Girl from Ipanema” in a hotel lobby or office elevator, you can take it out on Stan Getz.  But how did a Jewish kid from the Bronx usher in a new global sound?

At a young age Getz took to the music of jazz.  Having a photographic memory and a pitch-perfect ear, he could hum Benny Goodman solos after a couple of listens.   By the time he was 18 he had already played for Jack Teagarden, Jimmy Dorsey and Stan Kenton.  And in 1947 he relocated to California to play with Woody Herman. 

But by 1950 Big Band Swing was on the wane and Getz moved onto the Cool Movement, which concentrated on clean lyrical phrasing and a more subdued sound.  But even that movement would give way as musicians started to move further and further from any inherent structure  and into modal and free jazz.

Getz couldn’t go that far into the water.  To him the new music did not speak to him.  So that’s maybe why he was so open to a new sound that guitarist, Charlie Byrd, brought back after a State Department tour of South America.

Immediately, Getz fell in love with the Brazilian music of Bossa Nova and released Jazz Samba in 1962.  The album was so well received Getz invited two of the founding fathers, Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim to fly up to New York and record Getz/Gilberto.  From there “The Girl from Ipanema” would reach #5 on the pop charts in July of 1964 and the album would go on to win a Grammy, beating out the Beatle’s Hard Day’s Night.

What made the music so popular was at the time it felt like a breath of fresh air.  Getz was the perfect ambassador to introduce this sophisticated rhythmic sound. His saxophone creates a calm and relaxed feeling, like a cool evening breeze coming off the ocean.  Every time I listen to either of these albums I am transported to a sunnier, more happening place, especially when I listen to “Bahia” as Getz floats above the bass that propels the beat like a giant trampoline.

People have been asking if I've been hitting the Sauce, so I know this venue on the busy intersection of Lyndale & Lake is getting huge buzz love. I may have to postpone my attendance because I have two flat tires (those reading my twitters will already know this).

So tonight, The Mood Swings will be at the Sauce, at their CD-releasing party. As with previous Susstones showmania, they are cheap ($5, man!) and features a ton of bands (Two Harbors, First Communion Afterparty, and Blue Sky Blackout are also playing). Between bands, Marc the Guv is handling the DJ spins. Anyway, more bang for your buck seems to be Susstones' motto.

Before you go, some things you should know:

• Ashley Ackerson is the primary headperson is married to their now-new-bassist Ed Ackerson (see Polara)
• This is their third album, Recessionista, which came out last Tuesday on Susstones Records.
• The Current (a Minnesota Public Radio station) has sponsered this event

Night and Day

According to Holidays on the Net, today is Fred Astaire's birthday. So, I thought I'd post a song he's made popular that many musicians have covered.

"Night and Day" was written by Cole Porter and is part of the Great American Songbook.  It was written for the 1932 play Gay Divorce and was featured in the 1934 film adaptation, The Gay Divorcee. Fred Astaire sung it in both the play and the film. In 1946, a movie called Night and Day was made starring Cary Grant as Cole Porter and Alexis Smith as Linda Lee Porter. It's about "the fictionalized biography of composer Cole Porter from his days at Yale in the 1910s through the height of his success to the 1940s."
