Corporate rock sucks. Zombie Kurt Cobain recently made an appearance on ROCK BAND 5, which some fans are saying that it's "too soon" and how the music franchise is just interested in money.

 

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (live)

Not to be left behind, Geffen Records is hopping on the bandwagon by announcing the release of Nirvana Live At Reading, out on various formats: Limited Edition CD/DVD, DVD only, CD only, and 2LP. All available on November 24^th (the Limited edition comes out November 3^rd), just in time for that mad-shopping craze known as Black Friday.

Fans will cheer knowing that the official release is taken from the soundboard source, in glorious 5.1 surround sound, and they can finally toss out their crappy bootleg of this show.

Interestingly enough, this is the concert where Cobain came on stage in a wheelchair and played the entire show in a hospital gown. Hmm, foreshadowing something, are we?

Can't wait for November. In the meantime, enjoy this live version of their hit song, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from their live album From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah.

I can't claim to actually be all that hipster when it comes to Minneapolis bands (there are so many of them!), and I've definitely never heard of Lynhurst. To be fair, they've spent most of their time in Los Angeles, where they've been writing/recording/performing in the concrete city.

So, we have here three siblings: Mari, Matt, and Jake. All under 23 years old, the youngest being the singer, Mari. My first impression of their album, Field Day (released July 21^st on DKE/Anatomic Records), is that it's weepy soft pop with young sassy vocals and lots of lyrics.

If you like what you heard, you can download a free track of "Exactly" from the official website. The song is radio-friendly, with a hint of guitar plucking and orchestral. It's cute and non-threating.

So the good news is that they're back in the Twin Cities. They have a CD signing thing at Cheapo Records in Uptown tomorrow (Friday, September 4^th). Then on Saturday to be on KARE 11 Morning Show, followed by a show at the Fine Line Cafe.

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego: The Costume Caper

Remember Rockapella? You know, they were the house band from the original "Where In The World is Carmen San Diego?" kids program? For some reason, I always think of that one-time joke of Saturday Night Live's parody of "Where in the World is San Diego?" - in which most contestants would already know it's in south California.

So, I got a note that the band is auditioning new tenor/baritone singer. They are looking for someone over the legal age of 18 and under 49. You can send your submissions to the senior-hating group to audition[a]rockapella.com with biography/resume, photos, audio/video. Alternatively, there is the snail mail method (details on their website).

Deadline is September 15^th, so hurry. In the meantime, who wouldn't enjoy hearing that song one more time?

Rounding out the news is Maximo Park cancelled North American Tour, Brendan Benson debuts on the #1 Billboard Heatseeker chart, and hard-rockers Slayer announces "World Painted Blood".

Sad as the cancellation of Maximo Park, here's a band that's starting their US tour dates: Batrider (batrider.com / myspace), the band that Sally calls "Sad and beautiful".

No Through Road... Batrider... We All Want To... Margins...

Winner. is the latest on offer from Adelaide band, No Through Road. What's it like? Well, I'm glad you asked. Well, basically, it's an album of dirty, brilliant indie rock tracks. Took a bit of warming to, but it got there. Mostly guitar heavy, short and punchy, with the occasional interlude into something more melodic and quiet, bordering on cute (I'm talking about sounds that can be made by some sort of 70's Yahama organ (or more probably some sort of new-fangled synthesizer)). Not an excellent hangover album, but brilliant vacuuming music (don't worry, that's a good thing).

Seemingly well sought after on the live scene; looking at the list of support slots they have scored (eg. Okkervil River, The New Pornographers, Ben Kweller, The Microphones, M Ward, The Tallest Man on Earth, New Buffalo, Love of Diagrams, Wolf n Cub), it might just be an idea to check them out live.

As well as that, they're getting airplay in the UK; the track Berlin Wall nearly causing Mr Steve Lamacq to cry. So you know it has to be either excellent....or tear-inducingly bad. I'll let you decide.

Check their MySpace page for shows... there's a few coming up (and a few excellent shows that have recently happened - when you get that teleporting machine working, let us all know).

Batrider - Why We Can't Be Together

Slow and subtle. Melodic, but at times purposefully discordant. Sad and beautiful. It's a bit like an excellent gin and tonic. Tastes so good, but will leave you in tears at the end of the evening.

Why We Can't Be Together is the latest release from this group of individuals; originally from New Zealand, but popping up where ever the wind may take them (or something like that). For example, if you have a quick peek at their MySpace page, you'll see a list of Batrider show dates longer than your nose, much much longer. Germany, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark.... they're all there.

Why We Can't Be Together is not all sadness though. Look at that guy in a santa costume and another guy wearing a shirt i *cough* actually used to own (and bought for about $2). Laugh! No seriously, there are a few more upbeat-esque tracks... neither Let Me In To Down Below or the secret track on the end make me want to burst into tears.  All in all. Lovely.

Just when you thought he'd vapourised off the face of the planet, Mr Tim Steward not only re-surfaces with a album re-issue and tour with excellent late-90's band, Screamfeeder, but also brings us this!

We All Want Too, according to various sources, have actually been floating around for quite some time; formed to play the songs of Tim's solo album back in 2007. (Trust me to be the last one jumping on the bandwagon)

Back to the Car is a cute little EP, but I'm sure is just a little taste of big things to come. A complete contrast from Batrider, We All Want To can only be accused of creating smiles. There's something about Tim's unmistakable voice, girls singing pretty harmonies and the sound of a melodica that make me want to giggle inanely (on the inside, of course).

We All Want To are slightly more poppy than Screamfeeder, but for obvious reasons would easily attract the same crowd. Cute indie rock at its finest. Look: http://www.myspace.com/weallwantto and/or http://www.weallwantto.com/

Do you feel a need to test your attention span? The debut, self-titled album Margins definitely does that for me. Margins is an album characterised by long instrumental tracks. Don't get me wrong, i do appreciate a well written song when i hear it, but Margins, slow, experimental, complicated, loud, soft, loud, guitars, guitars, guitars. It's slowed my mind to the point where I can't write much more.

The background behind the formation and writing of Margins, is far more interesting than the album itself. It seems that coming from a number of other bands (The Nation Blue, Blacklevel Embassy, Ricaine, Hardware, Rhythm Bell and Warped), bands I'm not familiar with, but bands i can only picture as being loud and abrasive (just look at that photo... don't they look angry? well.... no), i do agree that the feat that should be recognised is the production of a whole album of tunes of a soothing nature.
