Cellist Ben Sollee is on "The Fall Migration" tour, you may remember that we haven't seen Sollee since his tour with Daniel Martin Moore in 2010 and as headliner in 2008. It's been a very long time since we saw this "angel in a JCrew pullover".

Co-headlining with Sollee will be Mother Falcon, a spectacular "20 active rotating members" orchestra. We previously mentioned their 2013 album You Knew when they were on tour, but had no idea this was an orchestra pop band.

Mother Falcon's third LP Good Luck Have Fun is available now on Universal Music Classics (their first release on UMC and marks the beginning of a new partnership, which includes plans to record and release a fourth album in 2016).

We were pretty excited to hear that earlier this year Portland's Fruit Bats had reformed (not to be confused with Turbo Fruits). They recently finished their tour with My Morning Jacket, and will be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul as a continuation of their headlining tour. Unfortunately, they've landed in October, our busiest time of the year for live coverage!

If you go to this show, expect frontman Eric D. Johnson to play some tracks from Ruminant Band, which we previously wrote, "Eric D. Johnson, singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist, led me on a journey to the heart of the summer.... If you are suffering from the recession blues, down on your luck then maybe you have just stumbled upon your cure."

Special guests Joan Shelley and Paul Spring to open.

Telekinesis will be in town celebrating his fourth studio album Ad Infinitum on Merge Records. We haven't covered a Merge band in a long time... We last caught Telekinesis in 2013 and in 2009 (in Manchester, England).

Ad Infinitum is available now on CD and LP in the Merge store; all LP purchases will include three bonus tracks as a download.

Say Hi (aka Eric Elbogen) will co-headline. He's touring in support of his ninth album Bleeders Digest (out now on Barsuk Records). We like Barsuk Records... but unfortunately had to miss his show last April 2014 and earlier in January 2015 (due to Winter Hibernation).

As we previously mentioned, the name is shorten from "Say Hi To Your Mom". We also mentioned that Elbogen's music is both charming and personal.

All That Remains will be bringing their hard rock music to Studio B (inside the Skyway Theatre) on Friday, October 30th. This tour will be in support of their latest studio album The Order of Things that was released back in February on Razor & Tie Records. Frontman Phil Labonte has been considered controversial because of some of the comments he has made (calling gay people "f***ts" and then saying they shouldn't be offended because black people have it worse...), but this has not stopped this band in the least. Worldwide album sales for All That Remains have exceeded over one million with no end in sight.

All That Remains will be joined on stage by Like Moths To Flames and We Came As Romans. The latter released their self-titled album on July 24th of this year. It debuted at #8 on the Billboard Top Current 200. I saw these guys awhile back and their live show blew me away. The amount of energy they have during a live show is immeasurable and I cannot wait to see them again.

Red Sun Rising will also be on this bill. These guys are fairly new to the scene and recently released their debut album Polyvester Zeal. They recently finished touring as support for Nothing More and Pop Evil. These guys are quickly gaining popularity so make sure you come out to this show and see what they can bring to the table!

The bossa nova/indiepop band Trails and Ways made their first visit to the Twin Cities (according to rhythm guitarist/keys Keith Brown) at the Turf Club in St Paul, last night, June 24th. The four-piece band is currently on tour in support of their debut album Pathology, available now on Barsuk Records.

Waterstrider

Oakland's Waterstrider opened the evening with "Black Blood", a rather slow song, but immediately picking up the pace with when Brijean Murphy (the Congas player) joined them on stage for the second song.

The five-piece band (however, a backup singer sixth band member joined them on tour) played plenty of songs from their 2015 album Nowhere Now, including the powerful title track that closed out their 30-min set.

There are two things you need to know about Trails and Ways: (1) Everybody, including the drummer, sings, and (2) they love music and they love playing music. The Oakland band first came to our attention when they did a series of cover lover songs in 2013, particularly a Portuguese version of Frank Ocean's "Lost".

The California band is now on tour in support of their debut full length album Pathology, available on Barsuk Records.

You can tell with the movie projector showing videos and images and live music set, that the band gave careful thoughts in the show's hour long presentation. The films sometime contains scenes of rivers and trees... something that the band admitted that they really love the lush green trees of the Midwest, having just taken the long drive from Wisconsin to Minnesota.

Since we already knew the band can sing in Portuguese, it wasn't a surprise to see that they've included a couple of Spanish-language songs on their set.

Highlight of their show for me was their song finale, "Mtn Tune", featuring a great guitar solo by Hannah Van Loon.

The two-song encore started with the Miguel cover "Sure Thing", and closing with their last song off Pathology called "Vines".

Trails and Ways' Pathology is out now on Barsuk Records.

Flashback: Death Cab for Cutie at 7th Street, Minneapolis (03/01/01)

I still think the name Death Cab for Cutie is a pretty dumb name, but I suppose the name gets people's attention. I'm just not sure how serious people will take them with a name like 'death cab'.

I saw the band at the 7th Street Entry in 2001, I believe this was the first time I've been to 7th Street, although, once again, I could be wrong (I have poor memory).

The notes I wrote about this date had nothing to do with the band, simply that I think the name is silly. It was overall a bad week for me: on this date, the thermostat in my house broke. I had to drive to Fleet Farm to pick up a new one for $50.

Slept at 3am the night before the show, so I was dead tired at this rather late show. The Jealous Sound, from Los Angeles, opened up for this show.

I don't have the setlist for Death Cab for Cutie, but according to setlist.fm at a show only days after my show, they played songs from their only two albums (Something About Airplanes and We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes), but showcased some new songs for their then-forthcoming The Photo Album, which was being released by Barsuk Records that October. The other odd thing is that they played a Bjork cover song "All Is Full of Love", which is only listed as "bjork" on on this setlist from the same tour.

Red Tag Tow Report

After the show, I had discovered that I had a $30 parking ticket! This cheap $7 show suddenly turned out to cost $37. It was all my fault, I had no idea I was parked in a "No Stopping Zone" (I didn't see any signs)! It was flagged for towing, but thank goodness, I showed up just before the stupid towing company showed up. As I was driving away, I noticed the tow company flashing its light as it was picking up a car nearby! Felt bad for that other car owner. Since then, I've learned my lesson and have never parked in that area again.

Transatlanticism Demos Barsuk Records

As for recent Death Cab for Cutie news, Barsuk Records reissued Transatlanticism as a "10th Anniversary" this past October 29th. It was a good time to make that album available again on vinyl after years of it being out of print. Both the vinyl and digital edition will include all the original demos of the songs.

For fans who already own Transatlanticism and don't feel the need re-buy the 10th Anniversary edition, the good news is that Barsuk also made the demos as a special stand-alone release, called, what else?, Transatlanticism Demos.
