Plenty of colors, plenty of black (some Crimson and Blue as well) -

After a few pandemic-related postponements, Baroness finally arrived back in Lawrence, KS at The Bottleneck for a massive and eagerly anticipated two-and-a-half hour long evening-with performance, on a night when people were already everywhere in the streets.

The Kansas Jayhawks basketball team had just punched their ticket to the Final Four tournament with a win right before stage time (en route to a National Championship) and fans, students, and local residents had poured out to the downtown streets in celebration, causing traffic jams, and closed intersections.

Inside the club, the mood was not of the Crimson and Blue of the college basketball team, it was somewhat darker with the night’s soundtrack reflected in the spectrum of the last five albums from Baroness, all color-themed in title, including their latest, Gold & Grey (2019, on Abraxan Hymns).

The night’s setlist was unique as well- its first half consisting of fan-voted tracks, bridged by a short acoustic set, and finished with a choice selection from the band itself, resulting in a well-rounded retrospective of their two decades in music.

The hard rock blend they play is difficult to simply define (on purpose) – some sludge, many progressive instrumental passages, a bit of psych, and is anything but formulaic, which keeps listeners and fans consistently engaged. Anyone that appreciates similar oblique qualities heard in bands like Tool, Deafheaven, and Mastodon, will undoubtedly become a quick fan here.

The quartet (John Baizley– vocals, rhythm guitar; Nick Jost – bass, keys; Sebastian Thomson – drums; Gina Gleason – lead guitar) reached back to 2009’s Blue album to start the marathon with “Ogeechee Hymnal” before things kicked up in full with “Take My Bones Away” from 2012’s Yellow & Green, and those “colors” of sound already being spread from their sonic canvas.

It would be over forty minutes in, before Baizley (the lone original member) would address the crowd, acknowledging “I know there was some other event going on today, that we were made aware of as the day went on… and I’m glad ya’ll won!” He also remembered previous local appearances as far back as 2007, and the good memories of the earlier shows here.

Though not tracked sequentially on the album, three selections from 2015’s Purple effortlessly flowed into each other – “If I Have to Wake Up” into “Fugue” into “Shock Me” and the fan-voted set would end with the spanning seven-minute “Eula”.

The rhythm section would then leave the stage, leaving just Baizley and Gleason, who switched to acoustic guitars for a gentle “Cold Blooded Angels” and “I’d Do Anything”, both from the newest record with Baizley dedicating them to the day’s winning team and declaring cheekily, the two songs had “the most championship vibe” of their catalog.

“Can Oscura”, an instrumental from the recent record, which translates roughly as “dark dog” roared out of the gate to begin the second half, led by a thumping Thomson mini-drum solo at its beginning. “Desperation Burns’ rolled with the power of a tank, anchored by Gleason’s swirling riffs, then things would turn back down to a near-hush to begin 2019’s “Tourniquet”, which speaks to their musical versatility.

The last bits of the set featured more aggressive, sometimes thrash metal riffed guitar work, leaning in with more momentum as 2009’s “Swollen & Halo” moved into a song ten years newer, “Seasons” from the latest album. As the band left the stage, chants of “Bare-Oh-Ness!” had already begun from the crowd, just getting their second wind after more than two hours of heavy music.

Returning, Baizley remarked about the joy they’ve had in being able to play live again and the fun they were having on this particular night, also saying “Go local sports team!” (maybe to show he doesn’t follow college basketball, which was more than ok to anyone in the crowd).

The evening would end on 2007’s “Wanderlust” from their Red album, a four-and-a-half minute tumbling sonic journey that seemed to suspend time itself, circling and tunneling with ambitious, progressive passages that culminated in a final swell.

Exhausted, but in the best possible way, people filed out of the club, each receiving a limited, silkscreened venue-specific art card as part of admission, happy both from the big college basketball game win, and from a marathon music quest from the always-interesting Baroness.

Ok, it’s officially started--

Between the backlog of postponed dates and bands feeling safe enough to head back on the road, there are several nights this coming week that you will want to be in two (or more) places at once; and instead, will have to pick the show you want to see the most.

Area sports fans are somewhat upset that Tyreek Hill is now a member of the Miami Dolphins, so find some happy instead, at one of these great live concerts coming to the area.

(Despite some health mandates loosening up, several artists are still requiring for entry, so check with the venue and/or better to assume masks and/or vaccination proof are required)

The LA alt-rock band that broken big with 2008’s “Sometime Around Midnight” has returned, in support of 2020’s Hollywood Park, an audio companion to front man Mikel Jollett’s memoir of the same name. Their fan base remains very loyal and they’ve replaced a few members since we saw them live back in 2013, but the core unit remains and their sound is often much bigger than the rooms they are playing.

Like everyone else, we’ve been talking about and anticipating this Norwegian’s live tour for the last two years. The KC show (like most on the tour) is long sold out, though there might be a slim possibility of last-minute tix released. The singer-songwriter (aka Marie Ulven) was buzzworthy before releasing her debut album, If I Could Make It Go Quiet, last April with hit single, “Serotonin” still all over the radio.

Arrive early for celebrated UK singer-songwriter Holly Humberstone, whose major label EP, The Walls Are Way Too Thin, was released in November. She recently won the Brits Rising Star Award and will join up as support for Olivia Rodrigo following this run, so this is a chance to see her close up and early on.

Bristol, UK country soul singer Yola is just getting started, though has already been nominated for four Grammy Awards in 2020, with two additional nominations this year, and was mentored by Black Keys front man Dan Auerbach. Her second album, Stand for Myself(produced by Auerbach) came out last summer and she played a sold-out Madison Square Garden last fall, in support of Chris Stapleton.

Opener Jac Ross leans a little more R&B, and released his cover of Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” last month.

Hippo Campus w/ Ginger Root Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland. $26-$28

They’ve been Twin Cities’ favorites for years, and it’s only more recently than the rest of the country is falling in love with this peppy indie-pop/rock band. We’ve written about them for almost a decade, and first saw them at a local festival in 2015 when they’d already established a strong area following.

The band has been prolific during the pandemic, releasing the Good Dog, Bad Dream EP in 2021 and new album LP3 came out just last month.

Rittz and Grieves, more, recordBar, $25

This six-act Loud & Clear Tour stop features the Georgia hip-hop headliner, previously signed to Tech N9ne’s Strange Music label, and is in support of last year’s S.O.S., released on his own label.

Grieves is signed to fabled Minneapolis label Rhymesayers Entertainment, though based in Seattle, and had a new album, Canopy, drop last year.

Like many shows, this has been re-scheduled a couple times due to the pandemic.

We previously wrote: Don’t be put off by the seemingly steep door charge to this show, as each ticket also includes a limited edition signed poster and the performance will feature two sets – the first, completely fan-voted and the second curated by the Georgia heavy metal band themselves.

We covered them last in 2016 and latest album is 2019’s Gold & Grey (on Abraxan Hymns Records), which they were previously set to tour with, but after a pandemic delay, are finally getting the chance to. The album is produced by one of our favorites, frequent Flaming Lips collaborator, Dave Fridmann.

Always over the top entertaining, the UK glam rock band still believes a thing called love and is out in support of new album, Motorheart. We caught them live back in 2015 and the band is also (somehow) keeping things family-friendly in this all-ages show.

Florida five-piece indie band Flipturn is named after a swimming maneuver, has a new single, “Playground” out this week, and promises their live show to be a complete and total release of inhibitions, for band and crowd alike.

Witness prog rock history as this longtime band (formed in 1969) is out on their Vinyl Sides Tour. We caught the band live, just days before the pandemic shutdown, and were amazed at their musical dexterity, loyal fan base, and creative longevity.

It gets a bit confusing with two incarnations of the band in existence (the other German-based version known as New Nektar) but we liked what we heard and saw from this lineup, and the band must have enjoyed their reception in Kansas City as well, returning to the area once again.

Anyone remember Martika? Los Angeles alt rock band Silversun Pickups sure does, covering her 1988 radio hit in their own unique way and the band has also returned to the road, with a 15-date November tour in support of 2019’s Widow Weeds (on New Machine Recordings), all produced by famed producer (and Garbage drummer) Butch Vig.

We’ve covered them since late 2012, having last seen them live in 2016, and the newest album represents a confessional album about rebirth and renewal. Singer Brian Aubert says of it, “This was the first album where we were open. We were exposed. I see how that can be scary to people, but for us, we really thrived on that.” Zella Day to open.

Queensryche is scheduled to play KC just a week before(Nov 12) and seeing ex-vocalist Tate completes the picture, especially as he is set to perform classic albums Rage for Order and Empire in their entirety… “Can’t you hear it calling?”

Lovelytheband and Sir Sly with Cannons, The Truman. $29.50-$35

This all-Los Angeles bands triple-bill might be the best indie-rock bang-for-your-buck of the season, as all three acts have considerable buzz around them. We caught headliners lovelytheband at a much smaller venue in 2018 and just knew they were headed to bigger and better things. The indie pop band returned to record racks with 2020’s Conversations with Myself About You (on Century Media/RED) and also non-album songs, “Games” (w/Tessa Violet) and “Miss You a Little” (w/Bryce Vine).

Co-headliner Sir Sly released third full-length, The Rise & Fall of Loverboy (on Interscope Records) this April, which includes single, “Citizen” with Gary Clark, Jr., and we’re loving everything we’ve heard from Cannons, whose hit single, “Bad Dream”, has been followed by by a digital-only cover album earlier this year.

Richard Thompson, Folly Theater, $15-$50.

The English folk legend returns, still touring in support of nineteenth solo album, 13 Rivers (on New West Records) and over five decades of musical history, dating back to seminal 60’s band Fairport Convention.

Kansas City’s hometown indie-rock heroes return for a Black Friday headlining show, that is the perfect palette finisher after a day of shopping for holiday deals. Latest album is 2019’s House on Fire (on Thirty Tigers Records) but the band also re-convened remotely during the pandemic for newest songs, “Operators” and “Reach Out”.

The quintet last played the area at recordBar in March 2020, so this is a big venue upgrade and looks to be a joyous way to spend the busy holiday weekend. Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear and Dreamgirl to open.

Don’t be put off by the seemingly steep door charge to this show, as each ticket also includes a limited edition signed poster and the performance will feature two sets – the first, completely fan-voted and the second curated by the Georgia heavy metal band themselves.

We covered them last in 2016 and latest album is 2019’s Gold & Grey (on Abraxan Hymns Records), which they were previously set to tour with, but after a pandemic delay, are finally getting the chance to. The album is produced by one of our favorites, frequent Flaming Lips collaborator, Dave Fridmann.

You’ve got to admire this Houston trio for calling their new album, Greatest Hits (on 300 Entertainment) which came out in May and features newest single, “The Secret Life of Me”. The hyperpop/rock band is playing to enthusiastic large crowds on their Night Out on Earth Tour with the album being so well received, its title might end up ringing completely true.

The new record is a follow up to 2019’s FANDOM which hit #2 on Billboard’s Alternative Album Chart and you have to admire any group that releases a single honoring that childhood treat favorite, “Fruit Roll Ups”. Phem and Zeph scheduled to open.

Originally booked at the Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, Minnesota, the promoter, local station The Current moved the Elvis Costello & The Imposters show to First Avenue last week. Personally speaking, I think this is a good move, pardon the pun, because Mystic Lake Casino is not really on my radar as far as looking at my concert calendar. Mystic Lake is simply too far for me to drive to.

I saw Costello in Aug 1996, and one of my biggest regret was not staying for the full show.

Baroness

Fans had been excited for Baroness‚Äô new album Purple when it came out in December of last year. Finally, those fans will get a chance to see the band perform the tracks ‚Ä¶

Baroness was catapulted into the headlines in 2012 after they were in a notorious bus accident in England. There were no casualties but there were serious injuries which left the future of the band in question. Thankfully, Baroness got back on their feet and started playing again. Back in December they released their much anticipated album, Purple. They made a stop in Minneapolis Tuesday night and played to a full house who had been eagerly awaiting their return with the new music.

Pallbearer

Pallbearer was the sole opener of the show. The vocals seemed to be a bit sparser than Baroness but when there were vocals, they were beautiful. At one point, there were three vocals going on at once and it gave me the chills. Brett, the lead singer, had one of the most beautiful voices I had heard in a while. He has the subtlest, but best, vibrato I think any doom metal band could have and it made them stand out in a genre that is typically dark and full of growled lyrics.

Pallbearer announced that they have just finished recording a new full-length exactly two weeks ago and will be releasing it in the near future so stay tuned. They treated the audience to a little sneak peak of a song off the upcoming release and if you like what Pallbearer has put out there in the past, you are sure to love what is coming up!

Baroness captivated the audience through their fourteen song set and then finished with a much deserved two song encore. They played through songs that spanned their nearly ten-year career but, much to the crowd's delight, they seemed to focus on their newest release.

In between songs the band would play instrumental interludes that left the crowd guessing what song would come next. As soon as the crowd would catch onto what song was coming up, they would erupt with excitement.

The music was a bit on the sludgy / doom side but John Baizley‚Äôs voice has this sort of beauty to it that you don‚Äôt typically get with metal bands like this. His voice is unique in a way that as soon as you hear it, you know who it belongs to but it‚Äôs not in an obnoxious way. It doesn‚Äôt sound like he is forcing his voice to sound different than everyone else‚Äôs, it sounded natural and perfect.

When you take Baizley‚Äôs voice and match it with the intricate guitar work and the driving drum rhythms, you get something amazing. The music seems to match the artwork that I fell in love with. It was intricate and complicated. It made you think and analyze but at the same time, it was nothing short of beautiful.

Baizley is more than just the frontman of this amazing band. He is also an extremely talented artist who does all of Baroness' album art along with the artwork for many other bands. The first time I heard of Baroness was not because of the music but because of Baizley's artwork. The music seemed to match the artwork with the intricate designs and whimsical feeling behind it.

Fans had been excited for Baroness’ new album Purple when it came out in December of last year. Finally, those fans will get a chance to see the band perform the tracks live. Baroness will be performing at The Cabooze on Tuesday, August 23rd. Many people have referred to this newest release as Baroness’ best and a masterpiece.

Originally, Baroness was to play the Varsity Theater, but ultimately decided to move to a different venue, due to concerns over child sex abuse lawsuits filed against the venue’s owner:

Due to some very disturbing allegations surrounding the club where we had originally booked our upcoming show, we have decided to side with our conscience and change the venue for our August 23 show.

Converge/The Red Chord/Baroness/Genghis Tron/Blacklisted show review

How Quickly We Forget Again

Epitaph was recently cool enough to stick me on their guest list to see one of my favorite live bands at the smallest all-ages venue in town. Needless to say, I was pretty stoked. Tonight, I was going to have my face melted by Converge, The Red Chord, Baroness, Genghis Tron, and Blacklisted.

Unfortunately, I showed up a half hour late, forgetting that this venue starts shows an hour earlier during the school year. So when I got there, Blacklisted was halfway through their set. The couple songs I caught were pretty much straight-up hardcore with a definite “Deathwish” edge to it. A fine opening to the night.

Genghis Tron hauled out their keyboards after that, along with a custom light setup. Their sound is sort of like what would happen if you mixed the typical Casio-core sound with a little bit of well-integrated trip-hop. There's no live drummer, but they have enough energy going between the three of them to easily make up for it. The house was already packed at this point, so I couldn't get any pictures, unfortunately.

I did, however, manage to make it up toward the front for Baroness, who managed to cement their place as one of my new favorite bands. They have a definite old-school vibe going on, with a lot of that classic British guitar crunch, and vaguely Maiden-esque riffage and the most melodic vocals of the night. But they do this all without sounding like any sort of throwback, and without coming off “too prog.” And, well, they completely slayed. This is one of those bands who, unless they break up or somehow put out a string of really terrible albums, is going to be huge, soon.

After them was The Red Chord. Quick confession: I have never liked The Red Chord. For some reason, they just never did much for me. Maybe it's because there are breakdowns where the guitar solos are supposed to be, and their songs are all itching for some crazy atonal death metal style guitar solos. But regardless, they put on an awesome live show that their recordings could never do justice. They have a lot of the kind of energy that can only really be communicated live. And damn, they communicate it well!

The main event, was Converge, however. Converge is the hardest band on Earth to photograph. Especially when the batteries in your camera are dying. Kurt came out before the rest of the band and played the opening riff of “Plagues” from the band's most recent album, No Heroes (I somehow managed to get a picture of this happening despite being smashed between about eight dudes who were all about twice my size at the time). The band came out and proceeded to melt face with an assortment of newer songs (“Plagues,” “No Heroes”), classics and fan favorites (“Concubine” and “Last Light” - which may be the most memorable singalong in heavy music - respectively), and some more obscure tracks (including “Locust Reign” from the Agoraphobic Nosebleed split LP). The band was in top form, and the crowd responded accordingly, many of them blatantly violating the venue's “no stage diving” rule and some of the gutsier ones even taking dives off the PA.

This tour is still going, and I'd definitely recommend checking it out. Baroness is going to be on the tour until the April 20^th show, after which Coliseum (also an excellent band) will be taking their place.
