London-based, New York City-rooted band Pretty Sick will be opening for Beabadoobee in the UK, starting with the Dublin, Ireland, date. The band will headline a North America tour, starting with Minneapolis’ 7th Street Entry, on October 24.

The band’s debut album Makes Me Sick Makes Me Smile is due September 30th on Dirty Hit.

Brooklyn-based ensemble Sammy Rae & The Friends is on a fall headline tour. Their latest single, “IF It All Goes South” is a romantic song about two lonely young-at-hearts through a series of near encounters.

Sammy Rae explains, “The quirky, omnipresent narrator (played by me!), follows them along and encourages their bumping into each other, until they finally collide at a bowling alley. It’s a timeless and whimsical love story starring two of the most beautiful retirees in the state of Florida. Dear Friends,

I am both sad and proud to announce my decision to cancel the Holified Tour.

I am sad because it breaks my heart to disappoint those of you who consistently come out to show love and support me for what I do, those of you who have bought tickets and planned trips to come and see me. When I think of disappointing you all, I feel the disappointment deep in the pit of my stomach as well. I was excited to finally be back with you in person to celebrate and bring the music of this new record to life. I know that without you I would never have been able to continue making music for all of these years, and I am so grateful.

But for the past several years we have all been through immense challenges, some physical, some mental, some spiritual, some economic. And yet, as we have begun to trudge on, much of the toll of that experience has been left untended as we rush back in, attempting to make up for lost time, to reconnect, catch up on bills unpaid, to escape the insanity that had begun to set in. For many of us, the landscapes we are re-entering are not the same.

As a touring musician, I don’t think anyone anticipated the new reality that awaited us. After sitting idle (not being able to do shows) for the past couple years, many of us like everyone else, earning no or little income during that time, every musician that could, rushed back out immediately when it was deemed safe to do shows. We were met with the height of inflation – gas, tour buses, hotels, and flight costs skyrocketed – many of our tried-and-true venues unavailable due to a flooded market of artists trying to book shows in the same cities, and positive test results constantly halting schedules with devastating financial consequences. All of that on top of the already-tapped mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional resources of just having made it through the past few years. Some of us are finding ourselves simply unable to make it work.

In my case,I have tried and tried, looked at what it would take from every angle, and I simply don’t have it. I can’t make it work. I’m actually going to elaborate on it more later because I think it’s important for people to know the truth of what it’s like out here for artists and I don’t believe enough of us are talking about it publicly. I’ve seen a couple articles start to emerge, literally over the past few days, just as I had started writing this letter to you, about musicians canceling tours, prioritizing themselves over the demands of a relentless industry. But for now, I want to tell you that for me it has taken a toll – through anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, vertigo, chronic pain, and missing crucial time with my children. In the place that I’m in, in the place that the music business is in, it feels like I’ve been hanging on, trying to make it to the ever-distant finish line, but my vehicle’s been falling apart the whole time – the bumper fell off, the wheels one at a time, the steering wheel, and finally the whole bottom fell out. And here I am thinking, ‘Should I just hold the doors up and run?’ And my little heart that has been working way beyond its limits, my whole body in fact and my soul too, are screaming at me “NO muthaf**ka! Pull.The F**. Over!”

I’m coming to you with the honesty that is inherent in my music. How could I release Spirituals, an album about honoring yourself and refusing to cross your own boundaries, and not take this opportunity to do just that for myself? I want you to understand that I am proud to be canceling this tour when it means that I am proclaiming that I, the person who writes the songs, is as important to me as the songs. I will not continue to sacrifice myself for an industry that has become unsustainable for, and uninterested in the welfare of the artists it is built upon.

Baltimore’s hardcore punk band Turnstile will headline the Fillmore in Minneapolis on October 25, as part of the Turnstile Love Connection Tour… which features Snail Mail (Jpegmafia will not be performing at this show due to other commitments).

We caught Snail Mail in April 2022 and wrote, “With the band’s logo on a big backdrop and a couple of Cupid statues on pedestals adorning the stage, Snail Mail began their sixty-five minute set with the title track and album opener from the latest record, Valentine and quickly got all of the crowd engaged and on their side. Following the album’s sequence, “Ben Franklin” next brought things very personal, as Jordan sang about her 2020 stint in rehab.”

For his first time headlining a show in three years, UK alt rock singer-songwriter Barns Courtney burst out with the pent-up infectious energy of a tea kettle left on the stove to over boil, and the packed crowd at recordBar in Kansas City returned that elevated amount of energy, back in kind.

Courtney was out on the first date of his Out With the Old Tour, which plays North America for the next two months, with Bristol UK band The Ramona Flowers (who we caught live in 2016) opening many dates on the first leg (sadly, not this one).

As for Courtney himself (who we’ve caught previous in 2016 and 2018), he’s still out in support of 2019’s full-length 404, but also has many new songs in the can, ahead of a new album expected late this year.

His sixty-five-minute started fiercely, with a rapid drum beat introducing 2019’s “London Girls” and Courtney prowling the stage from end to end, singing, “I should have cut my hair and changed my name” when in fact, he’s let his hair grow out, dyed it a platinum blonde, and kept his name, even emblazoning his initials in a large Roman font, on the back of his custom-made leather jacket (which he never took off despite the heat).

With additional red blush on his cheeks and a devilish smile, he took on a Dark Knight-era Heath Ledger appearance, grinning similar to Yungblud or a younger Steven Tyler.

Courtney had the crowd in the palm of his hand from the beginning, as many had originally bought tickets over two years ago and had been waiting since and showed their loyalty back early on with “whoa-oh” responses back to every verse of 2019’s “Fun Never Ends”.

The three-piece band was solid all night, despite only having learned the songs/set in six days (his female bassist only had two days) and each played with a reserved flourish. In addition to being his first headlining slot, the KC crowd got to hear several, yet-to-be-released songs including the new “Wanna be a Star” and “Guillotine”.

No one had to tell the capacity throng to clap along to 2017’s “Hands” as they just did, and on current single, “Supernatural” Courtney sang, “You’re terrifin’, beautiful, like a thunderbolt through my body”, maybe speaking of his own blast of frenetic energy that helped propel the set.

“They’re all Champions!” referring to his bassist, guitarist, and drummer for learning the set so quickly, before launching into the 2017 anthem, and the energy went to an even higher level for the rousing stomp of 2017’s “Glitter and Gold” with the crowd’s voices even drowning out the band’s, on the choruses.

Fans went back in time to the seemingly simpler 1990’s for the melodic radio hit, “99”, Courtney leaned on his own upbringing (living in Seattle from age 4-15) on the new “Young in America”, and the set found its fifth (maybe sixth) gear towards the end with 2017’s primal and booming “Kicks” and the main set closer, “Fire”.

Courtney had everyone crouch low to the ground, to then explode into a total jump-a-long on the floor with the man himself venturing out in the middle to spur things on further.

By the end of the main set, both band and crowd were happily exhausted, but the audience found it still in them to chant and applaud for more, even though it would be hard to top the end of the main set. Though a set of encore songs was listed, the band chose to end the night as-is and on a definite high.

While most bands returning to the road simply say how grateful they are to be playing live music again, a few acts really show you how excited they are, and that energy often translates back into equal or greater energy from the crowd, resulting in a truly interactive and experiential evening. Barns Courtney is one of those performers.

After a whirlwind busy way to start the month, this week slows down somewhat, with a few cancellations contributing to that. In particular, we’re bummed that Sydney’s Gang of Youths pulled the plug on their North American Tour, citing front man Dave Le'aupepe’s own health issues but hope for the best and a swift return to the road.

Here’s what’s happening in the Kansas City/Lawrence, KS metro September 12th-18th.

Monday Sept 12

Shinyribs, Knuckleheads. $20

The Austin group is a sonic melting pot of Texas blues, New Orleans R&B funk, horn-driven Memphis soul, country twang, border music, big band swing, and roots-rock. In support of Late Night TV Gold released in August 2021.

William Elliott Whitmore, Bottleneck-Lawrence, $17-$20

The Iowa blues, country, folk singer/musician plays roots-folk that is often inspired by his life on his family farm, in support of 2020’s I'm With You (on Bloodshot Records).

The National, GrindersKC, $39.50-$84

One of our favorites, The National are out on a reunion tour, their first since 2019 (and more recent full-length, I Am Easy to Find). “The last couple years have given us ample time for reflection and rejuvenation. Summer 2022 is a time for reunion," the band said in a press release. "We look forward to gathering with friends, old and new. United in music and light, suspended in time. We hope you can join us.”

The band has also partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 from each ticket will benefit the PLUS1 Ukraine Relief Fund, supporting the people of Ukraine through effective grassroots nonprofits providing humanitarian aid, refugee support and access to critical information; and Buffalo String Works and their work to ignite personal and community leadership through accessible, youth-centered music education.

Australian singer-songwriter Indigo Sparke will open, in support of Hysteria and new single, “Pressure in my Chest”, her follow up to last year’s Echo (which was co-produced by Adrianne Lenker).

Cheap Trick, Uptown, $45-$125

The band released their 20th studio album In Another World last April (via BMG) and since forming in 1973, the band has performed in 5,000+ shows and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. It’s been a family affair as offspring Daxx Nielsen and Robin Taylor Zander join their fathers as live touring members. We caught them at a 2017 benefit concert which turned out to be a rare Kiss reunion.

Panic! at the Disco, T-Mobile Center, $30.50-$130.50

In support of their seventh studio album, VIVA LAS VENGEANCE, the world tour returns to mostly arenas, with very worth openers Jake Wesley Rogers and Beach Bunny scheduled to open in Kansas City, so make sure to arrive early.

Testament with Exodus and Death Angel, The Truman. $35-$60

The thrash godfathers return with their thirteenth studio album: Titans of Creation, written remotely during the pandemic. We caught the legends live back in 2018, as part of Slayer’s farewell, and support from Exodus and Death Angel (who we caught in 2019) make this a solid, can’t miss show.

Sunny Day Real Estate w The Appleseed Cast, Liberty Hall- Lawrence, $35-$75

For the first time in over a decade, the classic alternative rock band is back on tour, featuring original members Jeremy Enigk, Dan Hoerner, and William Goldsmith (bassist Nate Mendel of Foo Fighters is not scheduled), opening their tour in lovely Lawrence, KS.

Lawrence’s own Appleseed Cast to open, and haven’t had new music since pre-pandemic, so maybe look to hear something new.

The Prom (musical) September 13 thru 18, Starlight Theatre, $15-$98

The Broadway hit that The New York Times declares it “makes you believe in musical comedy again!” The Prom features direction and choreography by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (Mean Girls, The Book of Mormon), book by Tony winner Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone) and Tony nominee Chad Beguelin (Aladdin), music by Tony nominee Matthew Sklar (Elf) and lyrics by Beguelin.

Wednesday Sept 14

Jimmy Eat World w Charly Bliss, Uptown Theater, $37.50-$77.50

The Mesa, AZ band returns to live stages on their Something Loud tour. Formed in 1993 the four-piece has released 10 studio albums, breaking through with 2001's “Bleed American,” and hit single, "The Middle," which reached number one. We last caught them live in Minneapolis in 2018.

We’re also fans of Brooklyn-based power pop band Charly Bliss who we caught headlining back in 2018 and are due for a follow up for 2019’s Young Enough album.

Call Me Karizma w Astrus*, VIVO Live Music- OPKS,$16, 2 for $20

Young aka Morgan Parriott is a rising singer-songwriter/rapper from the familiar stomping grounds of New Prague, MN (a good brewery is there) and blends hip hop, post punk and more for his sound, out on his The Francis Tour. To coincide, Karizma dropped a music video for track “Delinquents”- “a song about my role as a leader of misfit toys. If you’ve ever come to one of my concerts, you will see every type of person imaginable in the crowd. And I take pride in bringing them all together with my music. We are the delinquents.” And like, The National above, has pledged $1 per ticket to benefit PLUS1.

Arrive early for Astrus*, a buzzing Dallas indie / hip hop artist, blending rap with emo-tinged alt rock and bedroom pop. He writes not just about teen angst, but real tragedy and loss, struggles with addiction, and mental health on singles "She Wonders Why," "Thinking About You" and "I Hope Ur Happy". FAANGS also listed as support.

Red Hot Chili Pipers, Knuckleheads, $20

...we said Pipers, so don’t expect Flea and Anthony! It’s bagpipes with attitude, drums with a Scottish accent and a fusion of trad Scottish music and rock/pop anthems which they proudly call 'Bagrock."

Ricky Montgomery with Delaney Bailey, The Truman. $25-$50

Los Angeles singer, musician and songwriter whose songs went viral on TikTok, leading to being signed with Warner Records in 2020 and has new EP, It's 2016 Somewhere, out now.

American Aquarium, Knuckleheads, $20

Raleigh NC alt-country band in support of the brand-new Chicamacomico album and the band recently celebrated headlining the historic Ryman in Nashville. “Country music was the voice of the people. It wasn’t always the prettiest voice, but it was an honest voice,” said founder and front man BJ Barham. “I think that’s where country music has lost its way.” Listen as they try and help save it.

The second leg of their successful tri-headline "Trinity of Terror" tour with special guests Crown the Empire. As with the previous leg, all three will alternate who gets the closing spot each night, but regardless of where your favorite band on the bill falls, they promise a great set.

Troy, OH metalcore band formed in 2007 and just released their seventh studio album, Curse of Existence earlier this month, following lead single, “Bleed Together”.

According to vocalist Levi Benton, the album follows the same direction as the single, looking at the different connection in our lives and how the lessons we learn shape who we are as human beings.

Paul Thorn, Sept. 16-18, Knuckleheads. $20-$75

The longtime roots musician, bluesy, rocking and Southern, stages a mini-residency, multi-night stand at the club. 2019’s Never Too Late To Call was seven years in the making, recorded at Sam Phillips Studio in Memphis and produced and engineered by Grammy winner Matt Ross-Spang.

Barns Courtney recordBar, $20

Count us as fans of the English singer-songwriter, out on his re-scheduled Out with the Old Tour and hitting forty-two North American cities. New single, “Supernatural” has been released and Barns is “currently in the studio perfecting a new body of work,” which is due out later this year. His most recent album is 2019’s 404, which features singles “99” and “You and I” and we’ve been knocked out every time we’ve seen him live.

Vanilla Ice, KC Convention Center,$30-$100

Collaborate and Listen?! Wasn’t Ice just here, playing a set after a Royals game, you say? Well, yes, but aka Mr. Van Winkle again returns to town as part of this weekend’s Collect-A-Con, for a show included with admission ticket. The convention promises 500+ vendors selling Sports Cards, Funko POP!, Comic Books, Toys, Video Games, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic: The Gathering and more. Usually, that’s very up our alley, but we probably won’t hit this one.

Vampa, Aura,$20

VAMPA, aka Emily Mucha, is a young producer / DJ rising in the North and Southeastern dubstep scene, bringing a new wave of deep bass music to the masses. Artists she has previously been on the bill with include Mija, Boogie T, Trampa, Dubloadz, EPROM, Whipped Cream, Nitti Gritti, Blunts and Blondes, Jphelpz, Xaebor, Yheti and more.

The “Lennon and McCartney of their generation” Squeeze is celebrating their 45th band anniversary this 2019. To celebrate, the duo is on their “The Squeeze Songbook 2019” tour.

We caught the band in Nov 2015 and wrote, “Everything old is new again as classic UK band Squeeze is back on the road, in the Americas as an acoustic tour featuring founding members Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, playing a lively two-night sold out run recently in town and promoting Cradle to the Grave (Virgin/EMI Records), their thirteenth album and first new music since 1998.”

KT Tunstall will open the show. We’ve seen KT a few times, the last being Sep 2016 and we described it as, “The funny story about her biggest hit ‘Black Horse and the Cherry Tree’, she said after moving to Florida, she walked by an Irish bar and heard the local bar band covering her song. The singer started shredding on the solo, and she locked eyes with the singer and gave him the A-Okay hand gesture. The punch line is, the band at the Irish bar, had no idea who she was.”

We love Irish singer Glen Hansard (from The Frames and Swell Season) and always happy to see that he’s back in town. We last saw him in Nov 2015 and mentioned, “We've seen Glen Hansard before, but never quite like this. He's joined on stage by a large ensemble (see entire cast and crew photograph below), including both a horn and wind instrument section. Familiar The Swell Season songs were suddenly shown in a new, livelier, and possibly improved, versions of these classic songs.”

We saw VanderWaal at Starkey 2017 (when she was 13 years old) and wrote, “The youngest star of the evening, thirteen year-old Grace Vanderwaal next took to the stage for a short three-song set. The winner of last year’s America Got Talent competition seemed very humbled and appreciative to be invited and opened with ‘Clay’ from her Perfectly Imperfect EP (Columbia Records). “Music is the universal language, it connects to everyone in some way” she said before ‘Light the Sky’ and ended with picking up the ukulele for her first single, ‘Moonlight’.”

A night of lemons and honey--

The interestingly titled new album, Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life (Kobalt Records) from alt-pop trio The Wombats, brought them back to Minneapolis, to headline a radio-sponsored sold-out Go Show at the Fine Line Music Cafe.

The event was one in a series of shows brought in by local alternative radio station Go96.3, which helps foster fan support for up-and-coming bands, as well as station favorites (The Wombats had previously been part of a winter-themed Go Show at Northrop Auditorium in 2015).

Rising singer-songwriter Barns Courtney opened the evening with a spirited half-hour opening set that left him completely drenched at the end of things. New full-length is due soon on Virgin Records, but in the meantime, Courtney has released various singles and has both a lyrical sensitivity and a big room stomp sound to his songs, which include radio-friendly songs, ‘99’, ‘Glitter & Gold’, and ‘Fire’ (which first caught on in the Bradley Cooper-as-chef movie, Burnt).

“You guys are pretty saucy!” Courtney exclaimed dousing himself with water bottles for the final two numbers, the new ‘Kicks’, and ‘Fire’ which found everyone clapping along in double-time and singing along, as Courtney got the crowd to crouch low before all jumped up excitedly for the song’s crescendo.

With a backdrop of the new album cover, The Wombats emerged for their eighty-minute set, beginning with the heartbeat intro sound of the new album’s opening ‘Cheetah Tongue’ immediately going next into an arresting ‘Give Me a Try’ from 2015’s previous album, Glitterbug.

After some time off, the formerly Liverpool-based trio needed some triangulation logistics (singer Murph is recently married and living in LA, bassist Tord Knudsen has a family in Oslo, and drummer Dan Haggis is settled in London) to all come together, but their playing remains solid despite their distance, and the songs still have their distinctive hummable hooks and choruses amid Murph’s anxious and often somber tragi-comic lyrics.

‘Black Flamingo’ with its comfort in dysfunction, was paired live with the social awkwardness of ‘White Eyes’ before things turned more electronic again with 2011’s ‘Techno Fan’. The new album’s first single, ‘Lemon to a Knife Fight’ is an ideal bit of buzzpop about Murph’s place in relationships, and was one the first of a few lemon-themed songs of the set.

New single ‘Bee-Sting’ (which will be available on the upcoming deluxe version of the new record), with its lyrics, “You drive me crazier that a wingless bee, you drive me crazier than I ought to be” also prompted some on-stage conversation about what honey actually is (i.e. If it’s a fruit or a pollen, prompting shouted theories and drummer Haggis searching his phone).

‘Pink Lemonade’ (another lemon-themed song) had to be re-started due to all the honey talk, but Murph quickly got back on track, with the new album’s ‘Dip You in Honey’ sadly not played, as it would have completed the night’s theme. Murph also alluded to the so-called Minnesota Nice demeanor, mentioning one of his good friends in LA, is originally from the area, and so overtly and genuinely pleasant, he wasn’t sure he could trust him at first.

‘Jump into the Fog’ ended with an extra bit of instrumental bombast, with drummer Haggis mentioning it might have been from the influence of seeing Metallica headline in Austin over the weekend, and their informal stuffed animal mascot, Steve the Squirrel was introduced before the main set-closing ‘Let’s Dance to Joy Division’.

The three-song encore began with Haggis reading the crowd the dictionary definition of honey, before Murph cut him off (“we could be here all night…!”) with the straight-ahead new love song that is ‘Turn’. The synth intro of ‘Tokyo’ found everyone clapping along and before some last trivia about honey from Haggis, ‘Greek Tragedy’ ended the evening with Murph emoting, “I love this feeling but I hate this part, I wanted this to work so much”.

With their fourth full-length, The Wombats are showing a musical maturity not seen before, making lemonade out of any lemons and taking influence from the three corners of the globe each member is based in- the result is something that is musically sweet, viscous, and irresistible – honey.

The latest Go Show will feature Liverpool’s The Wombats. This is not the Wombats’ first Go Show, in fact, they appeared at Go’s Snow Show in Dec 2015.

The Wombats’ new album Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life will be out on November 9th via AWAL Recordings. Expect to hear some preview songs, such as the forthcoming single “Bee-Sting” on their set.

Thanksgiving rolled up early and with a handclap as Los Angeles band Fitz and the Tantrums invited a sold-out crowd to Come Get Your Love at the State Theatre in Minneapolis on their last show of their tour.

The night began with a frenzied forty-minute opening set from relatively new singer-songwriter Barns Courtney, an Ipswich, UK native who grew up in Seattle and who has an initial EP, Hands (Capitol/ Virgin-EMI) out now, with full-length due in the new year.

Courtney and band worked hard to get the still-filling room into his corner and pulled it off with songs like his initial single, ‘Glitter & Gold’ and even pulled a move out of the Tantrums playbook during hit, ‘Fire’ (heard in the Bradley Cooper chef movie, Burnt as well) by having everyone huddle low on the ground, before exploding up for the song’s chorus.  Based on the warm reception he’s received locally, expect a return headlining show, once the album is released.

Soul-influenced indie pop six-piece Fitz and the Tantrums is currently enjoying their biggest success to date, with ‘Handclap’ considered by many as being THE song of the summer and a string of sold-out shows in larger venues, culminating in this leg’s tour closing date at the State Theatre.

The group is out in support of their self-titled third full-length (on Elektra Records), which symbolizes a sort of rebirth into the mainstream as their sound evolves from the retro-soul of their debut and electro-pop of the follow-up.

The band opened with the new ‘Get Right Back’, amidst a stage that would light its decorative rectangle patterns in various pastel neon colors and singer Michael Fitzpatrick was adorned in winter white and co-singer Noelle Scaggs banged a tambourine, in bright sequined jacket.

The mixed crowd stood up, and continued standing from the very beginning of the show, as the band’s music make it hard to remain still. Minneapolis remains a strong market for the band, with Fitzpatrick reminiscing mid-set about previous appearances here, including their first on a bitter cold night at Bunker’s, followed just a few months later by triple-degree heat at the first of three Basilica Block Party appearances - with this night’s show selling out the quickest of any of their dates on the current tour.

Scaggs shone on the “break” songs- ‘Break the Walls’ followed by ‘Breakin’ the Chains of Love’, always moving and inciting the crowd to join along.  Musically, the band was tight but loose as always, with sax/keys/guitar player and bandleader James King driving the band’s signature soul/pop sound.

“Everybody’s had this kind of relationship at least once”, Fitz said, introducing ‘Complicated’, which most in the audience seemed to relate to, and which ended with a blazing King sax solo.  Hands waved in the sky for new single, ‘Roll Up’ and Fitz introduced initial hit ‘MoneyGrabber’ by saying “it’s all about getting down and dirty with us”.

An hour in, the double-time, clap-happy ‘L.O.V.’ ended the main set with extended jam solos from each of the musicians, but the crowd was vocal in demanding more and was rewarded with a three-song encore. Still constant on the radio, ‘Handclap’ began the extra set, with 2100+ people clapping along in time.

2013’s bluesy ‘6AM’ followed, with the crowd swaying from right to left with the chorus, with the irresistible whistle intro of ‘The Walker’ beginning their final song.  “Thank you for making all of our dreams come true”, Fitzpatrick said, prefacing the song which was everywhere in its day, from Oscar promos to video games, and numerous commercials.

With a tour called Come Get Your Love, Fitz and the Tantrums gave just that, to a capacity crowd in a market that’s embraced them since their early days.

Neo soul/pop band Fitz and The Tantrums will be ending their 2016 Fall Tour at the State Theatre in Minneapolis next Tuesday, November 22nd. The incredibly energetic band features Michael Fitzpatrick (“Fitz”) as lead vocals with co-vocalist/percussionist Noelle Scaggs, along with guitarist / saxophonist / flutist James King, bassist Joseph Karnes, keys Jeremy Ruzumna, and drummer John Wicks.

Their latest album is a self-titled album that came out in June 2016 on Elektra Records.

Barns Courtney (not to be confused with Australian singer/guitarist Courtney Barnett) will open. The UK singer-songwriter was previously in town with Tom Odell in October 2016.

We’re big fans of The Jezabels and was happy to see that they are back in the United States at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis... touring in support of their third studio album Synthia.

The Australian band was last seen in town in June 2014 and we wrote, “Most of the attention was focused on Hayley Mary, who sounded a little like Karen O and Kate Bush, but she had very few words to say on stage. Still, whatever lack of words she had, she certainly made it up with her funky dance moves.”

Might have been the wrong crowd… but was definitely the right act—

It’s No Bad Days on Tour for UK singer-songwriter Tom Odell, on the road supporting Wrong Crowd (RCA Records), his second full-length album that shows the young artist, has plenty more to show us.

The evening was opened by Ipswich, UK singer-songwriter Barns Courtney (not to be confused with Australian singer/guitarist Courtney Barnett) in support of his Hands EP (Virgin EMI Records).  We were gutted to have missed him (due to a friend’s wedding), but like everything we’ve heard up to this point, including ‘Fire’, which was featured in last year’s Burnt film, which starred Bradley Cooper.

Tom Odell and band took to the stage amongst minimal lightning and hazy fog, to begin their ninety-minute set with ‘Still Getting Used to Being on My Own’ from the new record, which features smart song structure in an Elton John way, and choral harmonics that echoed the best Queen ballads.

Odell, wearing a tan jacket with shorter hair than previous (though it could still cover his eyes), didn’t say too much between songs, instead letting the works themselves do the talking and they often showed flashes of brilliance for the young twenty-five year old songwriter.

‘I Know’ ached like mid-70’s Bowie, the title track of the new album slowly rose to crest like a sonic tsunami and ‘Concrete’ simmered like a tea kettle.  Songs of longing and heartache were plentiful, including the brooding ‘Can’t Pretend’, with only Odell’s voice against a slow bassline to end the song that was getting too serious, enough that he himself noticed near the finish and made light of things.

‘Heal’ sounded classic, with its lyric “Take my mind and take my pain, like an empty bottle takes the rain. and heal, heal, heal, heal” and a melody that would sound contemporary forty years ago… or forty years from now.

The rare campfire-sounding b-side track, ‘Behind the Rose’ lays claim to Odell’s own quote that “having your heart broken makes for good songs” and featured just Odell and bass player Max Goff, who Odell also called “ the fifth best harmonica player in Minneapolis” in his most humble Chris Martin voice.

‘Grow Old with Me’, the lead track from his 2013 debut, Long Way Down, would probably be played at every wedding in the US, if only more people on this side of the pond were familiar with it.  Guitarist Max Clilverd kept a rock edge on everything to not get too sentimental, like on the refrain of ‘Hold Me’.

The forlorn but no less mesmerizing ‘Another Love’ ended the main set, it’s “All my tears have been used up, on another love” lyrics hitting home with anyone trying to begin again after a significant breakup.

The two-song encore began with 2013’s defiant ‘Till I Lost’ and skipped the new ‘Daddy’ though it was posted on the setlist.  A percolating ‘Magentised’, perhaps his best overall song to date, ended the evening, stretched to eight minutes that found Odell standing atop his center piano to get the crowd to clap along.

And most of the crowd were happy to do so, though were somewhat lacking the collective energy a Friday night crowd should have had, at least in comparison to the rabid European festival crowds that we’ve seen respond to that song elsewhere.  A pocket of drunk and talking girls threatened the mood, though Odell was unfazed, as was most of the crowd, instead taken deeply enough into his compelling songs and heartfelt lyrics, to hardly notice.

Despite any of that, talent shone through this night, proving Tom Odell is a just small break away from US super stardom; to match or exceed his popularity rank elsewhere, and with his music, and true to his tour name, there are No Bad Days.
