The incredible Babyklok tour just made their stop at the Fillmore, in Minneapolis, on Monday night. This tour is co-headlined by Japanese kawaii metal band Babymetal and comedic satirical band Dethklok of Metalocalypse; both bands brought their respective fans to a sold-out tour.

Jason Richardson

Opening the show was mostly instrumental guitarist Jason Richardson. The guitarist is known for his works in Born of Osiris and joined All That Remains after Oli Herbert passed away. We’ve seen both bands, but neither time had Richardson in the band, we’re always too late or too early it seems.

Richardson did not have live band, so instead the percussion or vocals (Spencer Sotelo of Periphery on “Retrograde”) were pre-recorded and played as a backing track. It does sometime come off somewhat like a guitar Karaoke, but all that can be forgiven because of the amazing guitar-playing by Richardson. I’ve seen some very good guitarists, this is one of the best guitarists out there, in terms of playing technique. He’s very fast, his fingers would fly from the top to the bottom of the guitar’s neck. It’s inhuman, what he’s doing.

He does know that he needs to get his name and music out there, as asking the audience if they’ve never heard of him, you can see that most people raised their hands. Perhaps he could use a good stagename to stand out.

Dethklok

Next up was co-headliner Dethklok. Like Gorillaz, Dethklok is a fictional animated band. Originally appearing on the Metalocalypse cartoon show (on Adult Swim). All the music created for Metalocalypse was created by Brendon Small, and they released his music in the debut album The Dethalbum (as Dethklok) in 2007. Now in 2023, they have a fourth album, Dethalbum IV.

If you’re wondering why it took so long for the new album (an 11 year absent since Dethalbum III in 2012), it’s because it has partially due to the copyright ownership of the Dethklok name by Adult Swim. They must have come to a mutual agreement, because Dethklok is back, and stronger than ever, based on seeing the response from the audience.

Throughout their set, you can see animation clips from Metalocalypse, and if you’re a fan of the show, none of the brutal cartoon will surprise you.

Between blocks of songs, Facebones (the animated Dethklok logo) would give fans tips about concert etiquette and concert tips. It serves as a nice break before more death metal.

Japanese band Babymetal (ベビーメタル) closed out the night. This is a wonderfully unique band that combines the cuteness of Hello Kitty, the carefully choregraphed dancing of K-Pop (or rather J-Pop), and the darkness of heavy metal. It shouldn’t work, at least on paper, but when you see it for yourself, it does appeal to a certain fanbase.

The main singer is Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) with two backup singers and dancers, Moametal and Momometal (she is the newest member, replacing Yuimetal). The three girls are the main attraction, and they are backed up with real live music by the Kami Band, who wore demon masks.

Since each song had a special dance, the timing has to be impeccable. That also means that each set had to be exactly the same night after night… so seeing a show in Las Vegas will be the same as Minneapolis, which is good for someone seeing the show for the first time.

For someone seeing the show for the first time, it’s all very entertaining and comes highly recommended for this 2023 Babyklok tour.

R.I.P. Oli Herbert (All That Remains) and Du Yuwei (GNZ48)

Oli Herbert, lead guitarist for All That Remains was found dead in a nearby pond at his Connecticut home, at the age of 44. Police found him after families reported him missing, so cause of death is still a mystery at this time… according to TMZ.

We caught Oli in All That Remains just over a year ago September 2017 and was impressed by their cover of Garth Brooks’ “The Thunder Rolls”: “Believe me, you haven’t lived until you see bodies surfing to a country song.”

Speaking of unexpected deaths, especially at a young age, is Du Yuwei from the massive 86-girl group GNZ48, who committed suicide from what appears to be a fallout of having an affair with a married man. In these all-girls pop idol groups, the singers have to sign a contract that prevent them from dating (or appears to be taken), so they would appeal to young boys.

It’s just sad to see these young people killing themselves… over just nothing really. Du Yuwei was only 19 years old.

American rock band Falling in Reverse just headlined the Skyway Theatre in Minneapolis on Thursday night, September 27, in support of their new album Coming Home (released in 2017 via legendary punk label Epitaph Records).

Unfortunately, due to Visa issues, Melbourne’s Ocean Grove had to cancel their entire U.S. tour.

The Australian band sent in this heartfelt explanation:

The universe wasn’t on our side this time, and it saddens us all to announce that our tour of the United States this September/October has now been cancelled. This is due to the prolonged bureaucracy of obtaining work visas. While frustrating, this is a process we have to treat with legitimacy as to not jeopardize our careers and the many more US tours we will embark on in the future.

US fans don’t fret, we will be in your country soon enough playing shows, with news of that coming very shortly. We are so sorry to any other bands or fans who this has let down. In our eyes this isn’t a setback, but just the world reassuring us that good things come to those who wait. We will see you soon USA

Stepping in at the last minute was local metal band By The Thousands (bassist Adam Sullivan, drummer Carlos Monserrate, guitarist Dustin Korth, guitarist John Riviere, and vocalist Hondo Torres-Pena). We previously caught them in Iowa in 2015 and noted, “Their music sounded great, as always. It was clean and tight and perfect. I could hear the people around us talking about how great they sounded and I couldn’t help but let the smile creep across my face.”

If you’ve never seen By the Thousands, sometime they have a “Cookie Monster” metal sound, and by the end of their set, singer Hondo Torres-Pena would often do some heavy head banging with his hair let loose.

Massachusetts-based All That Remains (Philip Labonte Oli Herbert, Mike Martin, Jason Costa, and Aaron Patrick) came on next, playing some tracks from the new album Madness (Razor & Tie Records). All That Remains is unique in that they crossed over many musical genre, including pop/punk and country music, which they demonstrated with a cover of the great Garth Brooks’ ‘The Thunder Rolls’. Believe me, you haven’t lived until you see body surfing to a country song.

When asked why they decided to cover ‘The Thunder Rolls’, former Shadows Fall and current All That Remains vocalist, Phil Labonte said, “We’re continuing to push what people’s notion of what All That Remains is and what we’re allowed to do and what we’re willing to do, in what ways we’re willing to go and experiment… That's always our point -- How can we reach out to new people?”

We last saw the group at the Skyway Theatre in 2015, when they were touring for The Order Of Things (their 7th studio album on Razor & Tie).

Now back with Madness (also on Razor & Tie), this is one of the band’s biggest hit album to date, hitting #1 US Top Hard Rock Albums and #9 US Top Rock Albums charts. The band was obligated to play a few tracks from the album, including the previously mentioned Garth Brooks cover and the title track, ‘Madness’ which started their set.

Highlight of their set was ‘What If I Was Nothing?’, a song done in the styles of “an 80s power ballad”, as Labonte explained. It was as epic as you would imagine the song to be live.

Falling In Reverse (singer Ronnie Radke, rhythm guitarist Derek Jones, bassist Zakk Sandler, guitarist Christian Thompson, and drummer Chris Kamrada) was last seen touring with Atreyu for their Christmas Vacation tour, right after their Supervillains Tour (with Attila, Metro Station, and Assuming We Survive), and now they are on their Coming Home Tour. At this point, the band is never going back home to Las Vegas.

Although it was clear that vocalist Ronnie Radke was sick, due to his raspy voice, Radke said he wouldn’t cancel the show because of his fans. He gave it his all, jumping, screaming “mother****rs!” and being his usual hyperactive self. If this was an ill Radke, wait until you see Radke in tip top form.

Although their new album Coming Home just came out, they did play it a little safe by playing some of their biggest hit from their #1 third album Just Like You, such as ‘God, If You Are Above ...’, which, a woman fan in the front had taken off her bra and tossed it to Radke.

The remainder of their set was basically dedicated to Coming Home, so if you love the new album, you’ll love this current tour.

Boston’s Palehound is headlining the 7th Street Entry in support of their critically acclaimed sophomore album, A Place I'll Always Go (Polyvinyl Record Co.)

We caught the band in November 2015 and wrote, “Palehound seemed to have as many fans at the show as Mitski. Not only because they are Pitchfork darlings. Delivering a somber, yet engaged set to an attentive audience, it’s clear that Ellen Kempner really cares about her story and craft. Her soundscape could be considered standard indie rock if it wasn’t for the evocative, sincere lyrics and almost new wave guitar noodling that she weaves in. Live she adds a bit of fury to the songs with some strong well placed shrieks. Her band is also very tight, and I enjoyed the tone and trot that the bassist brought. I’m definitely interested in what else Ellen decides to create as Palehound.”

Tall Friend and Strange Relations will open.

These guys have been around since 2007 but haven't really gotten the attention they deserve. That is all about to change. They blew me away last night. Mike Protich, singer, has a voice like I have never heard before. He is fronting a metal band but has a voice that would turn all the chairs on The Voice. That's something that you don't get all the time. There's nothing wrong with a metal singer that can't sing, that's part of the charm for me. But when you have a singer that is nailing every note and actually has feeling in his voice, that's something special and that's exactly what this band has.

Unfortunately, Red Sun Rising only had about a twenty minute set but they fit as much as they could into those twenty minutes. The crowd seemed to be conserving their energy for the rest of the night but that didn't stop the five-piece from giving the short set their all. Unfortunately, Red Sun Rising didn't seem to fit the more metalcore bill of the night. Their sound seemed to be a bit too radio rock for the crowd. Last night was Red Sun Rising's last night on this tour and they will soon embark on a tour with Godsmack. I think they will fit on that bill way better and hopefully they will finally get the recognition they deserve.

We Came As Romans

We Came As Romans stole the show last night, playing tracks from their latest self-titled album (Equal Vision Records). They had an intense light show that pretty much blinded you at times along with great music. I have seen these guys a couple of times and they keep getting more and more polished with each performance I see. "Tear It Down" is a song that the unclean singer, Dave Stephens, said was written just so they could see the whole crowd jump up and down in unison. That's exactly what the crowd did.

The crowd never slowed down for WCAR's set and neither did the band members. The amount of energy these guys have is immeasurable. Throughout the hour long set, WCAR had the crowd enthralled in their live show. You didn't have to know their lyrics to feel like you were a part of this band. That is why I feel like these guys stole the show. It didn't matter who you were there to see last night, you stopped what you were doing, stopped the conversation you were in the middle of, put your phones away the second these guys started.

All That Remains were the headliners of the night, currently touring in support of their latest studio album, The Order Of Things (also available on Razor & Tie). This is their seventh studio album, and highly anticipated, as the record landed #25 on Billboard Top 200 with over 19,000 units sold in its first week at retail.

The Massachusetts band, featuring singer Phil Labonte, guitarist Oli Herbert, rhythm guitarist Mike Martin, bassist Jeanne Sagan, and drummer Jason Costa, played some hits, including their first hit single "This Calling".

Cellist Ben Sollee is on "The Fall Migration" tour, you may remember that we haven't seen Sollee since his tour with Daniel Martin Moore in 2010 and as headliner in 2008. It's been a very long time since we saw this "angel in a JCrew pullover".

Co-headlining with Sollee will be Mother Falcon, a spectacular "20 active rotating members" orchestra. We previously mentioned their 2013 album You Knew when they were on tour, but had no idea this was an orchestra pop band.

Mother Falcon's third LP Good Luck Have Fun is available now on Universal Music Classics (their first release on UMC and marks the beginning of a new partnership, which includes plans to record and release a fourth album in 2016).

We were pretty excited to hear that earlier this year Portland's Fruit Bats had reformed (not to be confused with Turbo Fruits). They recently finished their tour with My Morning Jacket, and will be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul as a continuation of their headlining tour. Unfortunately, they've landed in October, our busiest time of the year for live coverage!

If you go to this show, expect frontman Eric D. Johnson to play some tracks from Ruminant Band, which we previously wrote, "Eric D. Say Hi (aka Eric Elbogen) will co-headline. He's touring in support of his ninth album Bleeders Digest (out now on Barsuk Records). We like Barsuk Records... but unfortunately had to miss his show last April 2014 and earlier in January 2015 (due to Winter Hibernation).

As we previously mentioned, the name is shorten from "Say Hi To Your Mom". We also mentioned that Elbogen's music is both charming and personal.

All That Remains will be bringing their hard rock music to Studio B (inside the Skyway Theatre) on Friday, October 30th. This tour will be in support of their latest studio album The Order of Things that was released back in February on Razor & Tie Records. Frontman Phil Labonte has been considered controversial because of some of the comments he has made (calling gay people "f***ts" and then saying they shouldn't be offended because black people have it worse...), but this has not stopped this band in the least. Worldwide album sales for All That Remains have exceeded over one million with no end in sight.

All That Remains will be joined on stage by Like Moths To Flames and We Came As Romans. The latter released their self-titled album on July 24th of this year. It debuted at #8 on the Billboard Top Current 200. I saw these guys awhile back and their live show blew me away. The amount of energy they have during a live show is immeasurable and I cannot wait to see them again.

Red Sun Rising will also be on this bill. These guys are fairly new to the scene and recently released their debut album Polyvester Zeal. They recently finished touring as support for Nothing More and Pop Evil. These guys are quickly gaining popularity so make sure you come out to this show and see what they can bring to the table!
