Canada’s Alice Glass, formerly of Crystal Castles, is currently on tour for her debut album PREY//IV (Eating Glass Records). The tour stopped in at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall, in St Paul, on Saturday, September 17th.

We haven’t been to the Amsterdam since 2019, so they’ve made some changes to the venue. There used to be a wall, separating the venue from the bar and food-serving area. Now, the venue looks much larger, with the removal of the wall… but it does have a weird contrast, as the bar/food-serving area is well-lit, compared to the darkness of the music dancefloor.

Los Angeles’s artist and fashion icon, Uffie (Anna-Catherine Hartley) opened the show. Uffie is a one-woman show, who sings over pre-recorded backing track. Her biggest fan, as seen at stage right, was Alice Glass, who often waves her arms in the air and mouthing Uffie’s lyrics, such as the viral hit song, “Pop the Glock”. It appears that Glass was also helping with programming the music on her laptop.

Uffie’s latest album, Sunshine Factory, came out in May 2022, via Company Records, and featured “Cool”, which she played near the end of her set.

To understand Alice Glass, you also need to understand the fanbase… which is just as important as Glass’ music. Glass’ visuals and songs about social alienation and depression resonate to her emo or goth fans. It’s not just music, but it’s a lifestyle.

Songs on the setlist includes plenty from her debut album, PREY//IV, but she threw in a couple of Crystal Castles songs, including her favorite, “Alice Practice”.

The National are on their first tour since 2019… stopping by Surly Brewing Festival Field on September 14th.

Highly Suspect is not only kicking off their 2022 fall headlining tour in Minneapolis… but they are playing a two-night residency at First Avenue on Sep 16 and Sep 17.

The band’s latest album, The Midnight Demon Club will be out on September 9th.

We last saw Highly Suspect on Mar 31, 2017 and said, “It wasn’t too long before Highly Suspect took the stage to a very restless sold out audience. Any possible signs that the band was on stage were greeted with huge cheers (even for the awkward stage hand who was just trying to adjust the mic). As we previously mentioned, we caught the band as opener in September 2015 and were impressed that more than half the audience was there for Highly Suspect.”

Alice Glass’ official debut album is called PREY//IV, and is out now via Eating Glass Records.

Speaking about the new project Glass shares, “I hope this record reaches those who need to know that they are not alone in this world—who need to know that it’s ok to be hurting. I hope, for some, that it will give them the courage to find a path away from the toxic situations they are experiencing.”

As for Zola Jesus, we saw her in Jan 2015 and said, “In a typical Zola Jesus show, you can see Danilova violently dancing and trashing. It's not uncommon to find her climbing on things (for this show, she was on top of the Cedar's house piano). Sometime, her violent dancing caused her to accidentally fall to her knees - which I guess happened so often that she'll sometime post photos of her bruised knees. Having seen her on stage, I can tell you it looked painful. But who am I to argue with art?”
