Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors just headlined First Avenue on Thursday night, in support of their new album Strangers No More.
Josiah and the Bonnesvilles opened up the show. The stage name is really for one lone singer, Josiah Leming.
We actually wrote about Josiah Leming, when he was only 20 years old, in Feb 2009 saying that Simon Cowell actually wanted to see Leming advance into the American Idol semifinals (but he was out-voted). Since his debut album, Come On Kid (Warner Bros Records), he decided to change his stagename to Josiah And The Bonnevilles for his sophomore album On Trial, in 2018.
The self-described, “red neck”, talked about how he grew up in a small town Morristown, Tennesse (near Nashville), and never thought one day that he would be standing in front of a very large crowd people, singing songs about his life. The audience was encouraging Josiah on and he seemed to really love being on stage. However, he confessed that he gets all nervous and so the sound guy someone would turn on the lights on the audience, so he could focus.
Josiah said that he first came to fame when he started covering mainstream popular songs, in his “redneck country style”. Hence, midway in his set, he covered Taylor Swift (“Anti‐Hero”), Tyler Childers (“Jersey Giant”), and Justin Bieber (“Ghost”).
He said that he was coming back “next year at the smaller room”, pointing to the 7th Street Entry next door.
Drew Holcomb (billed as Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors) came out excited and stating how amazing it was to be at First Avenue’s main room. The singer said that it was their goal to play this room and so it was such an honor that so many diehard fans have come out to support the group.
The group prides themselves as knowing everybody in the audience (and I believe them!). First Avenue was, by far, the largest venue as headliner, having played the tiny 7th Street Entry in March 2012 and at the now-defunct Triple Rock Social Club in September 2013. Every time they come back, they got a larger crowd and larger stage.
We saw Drew in 24 July 2015, and wrote, “Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors is a Nashville band, whose members usually include Holcomb’s wife, Ellie, though she was understandably absent as the couple just had their newborn son, Huck. New album, Medicine (Magnolia Records) came out at the beginning of the year, and the album continues to gain momentum with the band’s constant touring.”
Like Josiah, Drew also dabbed in covering popular song, in their style, with a cover of Adele’s “When We Were Young”. Speaking of Josiah, the highlight of the set was Josiah came on stage to help sing It Haunts Me
The other highlight, since they were in Minneapolis, they decided to work in a cover of The Jayhawks’ “All the Right Reasons”.
