Local legend band The Jayhawks is headlining the Palace Theatre, in St Paul, in support of their ninth album Paging Mr. Proust coming to vinyl for the first time since its original 2016 release.

We saw The Jayhawks show in Dec 2018 and wrote, “… the highlight had to be with Johnson and longtime Soul Asylum guitarist Dan Murphy (looking thinner but very happy) forming “semi-Smog” an almost lineup of alt supergroup Golden Smog (sans Jeff Tweedy) for a version of 1998’s ‘Until You Came Along’.”

Golden Smog to open. The show is billed as Golden Smog Electric, featuring Gary Louris, Kraig Johnson, Dan Murphy, Marc Perlman, and Steve Gorman.

Local psychedelic rock outfit White Line Darko is headlining the 7th Street Entry this December 17th.

We spotlighted the band in June 2022, writing, “New Minneapolis psychedelic rock outfit White Line Darko (Kenneth Zierman, Nolan Juusola, Nolan Leahy, Ben Ouellete, and Matthew Nickolay) will be holding their double single release show for “Turning Out!” …”

Eau Claire’s Motherwind on the bill to open. The band formed in August 2020 and features singer/guitarist Anthony Frey, guitarist Nate Rogers, bassist Michael Hargens, and drummer Jackson Kleingartner. Since they formed during the pandemic, the band took time in developing their 70s-influenced sound.

Also seven-piece original fusion pop Minneapolis band Beneath Green to open… let’s see if all seven will fit on the tiny 7th Street Entry stage.

Update: 9-piece band NATL PARK SRVC can (barely) fit on 7th Street Entry stage.

Texas-based Alt-Rock band The Unlikely Candidates is touring in support of their new album Panther Island.

Lead singer Kyle Morris described the album, “The record is a kaleidoscopic landscape of genre and style that changes from song to song, a greatest hits of the sonic worlds the band has inhabited over the years. Thematically it’s just as varied, shifting from songs about the chaos on the streets and loneliness behind the phone screens of America during the pandemic, to humorous tales of twenty-something malaise and the many ways the heart breaks; when love or loved ones are lost. At the heart of this album is the ethos of taking a bad situation and making something of it. It was written during the pandemic while the world was shut down, by a band who has hit enough roadblocks to delay a debut album nine years.”

Portland band Eyelids is touring for their new album The Accidental Falls. The group recently added a new member, Victor Krummenacher (of Monks of Doom, Camper Van Beethoven).

Their secret origin of The Accidental Falls was when former Tim Buckley collaborator Larry Beckett first offered Chris Slusarenko and John Moen of Eyelids to write new lyrics for their next record, the band wasn’t sure how it would fit their brand of guitar-driven rock. But they trust it to work and as a result, the fourth album was created with R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, as record producer. How they got involved with R.E.M. is another story altogether… but let’s just say that the group is a big fan of R.E.M’s music, and it’s an honor for them to work with Peter Buck.

What a dream lineup! It’s Cult-favorite band Violent Femmes with The Breeders 2022 tour.

Violent Femmes’ recently celebrated the 30th Anniversary of Why Do Birds Sing? with a deluxe 2-CD reissue. The album was remastered with previous unreleased material (including alternative takes and outtakes), and a complete concert from 1991 (captured at the Boathouse in Norfolk, VA).

We last saw VF in Oct 2017 and wrote, “It basically boils down to the fact that fans probably haven’t seen VF for 16 years. That’s a long time, but, based on hearing almost every song sung back, word for word, these same fans clearly haven’t forgotten about the Violent Femmes. They saved two of their biggest singalong classics ‘Kiss Off’ and ‘Add It Up’ for the encore.”

The last time we attended a Transmission show was at an anniversary show at First Avenue in Mar 2015, featuring Andy Rourke from The Smiths. We were impressed at the huge turnout: “Turnout to this Saturday event was very, very good, with the main dance floor generally full, as you can see from the photos. Everyone we ran into were generally smiling, drinking, being social, and having a good time.”

The Atlanta, GA band Starbenders is led by front-woman Kimi Shelter and her her gang of androgynous rockers ( Aaron Lecesne, Kriss Tokaji, Emily Moon). The group formed in 2013 and signed with Nico Constantine’s music label, Institution Records.

Starbenders’ new album Love Potions is out now on Sumerian Records.

Australia’s beloved psychedelic-surf-rockers Ocean Alley announced a brief eight date US tour, one of those dates happened to be the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis, for June 22.

“This year we will be traveling all across North America during June and July to play some huge live shows during a beautiful northern summer,” says Ocean Alley’s Mitch Galbraith. “We’ve got new music and production we’ve been working on during the break and we’re super keen to share it with you. Heading back after over 2 years to see old friends and getting back to live music is what we all need right now. We will be hitting all of Canada and East Coast USA in June / July, then we'll return later in the year for another huge run of the west coast. Hope to see you there for more good times!”

It’s been many years since we last saw or heard from Tune-Yards. We last saw her in Mar 2018 and said, “The stage was set with dramatic lighting framing the back end of the stage and a curved center frame with gauzed curtains that would accentuate the shadows of tUnE-yArDs as the three-piece took to the stage for their seventy-seven minute headlining set beginning with ‘Home’. “I always feel on holy ground” Garbus posted on social media just prior to playing the historic venue.”

Tune-Yards’ latest album Sketchy came out in 2021, via 4AD.

If the name Mick Turner is familiar, he’s previously from Dirty Three, who we saw in Sep 2012 and said he was stoic: “Flamboyant and energetic [Warren Ellis], along with somber-faced Jim White on drums and stoic Mick Turner on guitar, gave the crowd the sonic feast, songs that stretched and swelled with emotion and with every kick of Ellis’ pointed shoe. Ellis indeed provided humor and dramatics to the show; dressed in what one audience member concluded was an LSD-inspired shirt (Ellis insists the tie-dyed purple and turquoise shirt, buttoned down Tom Jones-style, was the result of throwing up Kool-Aid), the violinist drilled the bow into his instrument, causing stringy bits to rub off and into his considerable salt-and-pepper beard.”

Twenty-one year old artist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jordana is touring in support of her new album Face The Wall. She’ll tour with Wallows in May, then with New York’s Harry Teardrop (no relations to local Frankie Teardrop), and eventually with Remi Wolf.

Face The Wall will be out on May 20th via Grand Jury. The title, as Jordana explains it, “The album title has a few meanings to me. Mostly, it's about not giving up. The wall can be anything in your way. The album is a sort of reminder to myself that I have to face those things, and I can't take the easy route and turn around.”

New Minneapolis psychedelic rock outfit White Line Darko (Kenneth Zierman, Nolan Juusola, Nolan Leahy, Ben Ouellete, and Matthew Nickolay) will be holding their double single release show for “Turning Out!” this June 10 at the Driftwood Char Bar in Minneapolis.

The third release was engineered and produced by Matt Patrick, who owns and operates Library Studios.

Zippo Man listed to open.

White Line Darko - a Minneapolis-based psychedelic rock band - will be releasing their upcoming double single, "Turning Out!," on June 10, 2022. The project contains two new singles, "Penthouse" and "The Times," and will be performed alongside a slew of other tunes at Driftwood Char Bar.

Saturday, June 11, is the big Rock the Garden show. We’ve previously written about the 2022 line, see details below… but here’s something new: we’ve previously seen Australian duo Divide and Dissolve in Feb 2018, as opener for local favorite Polica:

Outside of an angry punk band or two, no band in recent memory has started so polarizing before ever playing a note, than Divide and Dissolve, the Melbourne, Australia duo of T//R and S//N (Takiaya Reed –guitar/sax; Sylvie Nehill- drums) who asked for quiet as they began, then Reed went into a verbal diatribe decrying worldwide white supremacy, seeking to empower black and indigenous people, and reminding the mostly white audience, that this was not their land.

Similar statements were given before each song played, with the expected crowd response ranging from a smattering of applause to cat calls and insults- but inciting seems to be part of their purpose, so in that regard, it worked. Musically, they play a heavy, low tempo, skeletal doom rock blend meant to incite as much as their statements, with latest self-release being last week’s Abomination.

As with previous events, there are two stages, food trucks, beer tents, and great music.

This year, they are bringing co-headliners Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats and Sleater-Kinney… both excellent bands.

I don’t want to brag, but we were first to report Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats at the band’s first appearance at Bluebird Theater in Denver (Apr 2013): “Nathaniel Rateliff, debuted his new musical endeavor last Thursday at the Bluebird Theater accompanied by soul outfit, The Night Sweats.” The band went on to sign to Stax Records for their self-titled debut album in 2015.

Incidentally, if you ever see a Nathaniel Rateliff’s solo show (which we did in in April 2014), his music and performance is very different than a Night Sweats show. And trivia, but Rateliff previously appeared at Rock the Garden in 2016.

As for Sleater-Kinney, I’ve been seeing the band live since 2000 … with the last one in Feb 2015 after they re-united for a tour. That show was somewhat bitter-sweat, as it would be the last time we would see them with original drummer Janet Weiss (who we just saw in Quasi in Apr 2022).

Gates open at 1pm, music starts at 2:30pm.
