What a weird weekend… we’re getting two horror movies based on bears this week.

The first is Cocaine Bear, loosely based on true events.

In 1985, a plane carrying bags of cocaine went down in the woods and an American black bear ingested the drugs. That’s basically the setup for this film. Based on the trailer, it looks like the bear goes on a rampage and murders everyone it sees, while high on cocaine.

This looks more like an unintentional comedy. It could be the next Snakes on a Plane film.

Apparently, this is Ray Liotta’s final performance, before his death in 2022.

Cocaine Bear is scheduled to be released in the United States on February 24, 2023, by Universal Pictures.

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023)

The second horror bear movie is Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.

Thanks to Winnie the Pooh going into the public domain, low-budget filmmaker Rhys Frake-Waterfield jumped on the opportunity to transformed Winnie into a murdering bear in Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey. The 2023 British independent slasher film follows Pooh and Piglet on a bloodthirsty murderous rampage on a grown up Christopher Robin. It’s definitely not a Disney movie.

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey will get a United States release on February 15, 2023, and will be in theaters in the UK on March 10, 2023.

Voted best band at the Shropshire Music Awards in 2022, Black Bear Kiss announced their debut self-titled album to be out March 3, 2023.

The upbeat four-piece band from the Midlands formed in 2016, inspired by bands like Foals and Royal Blood.

Their self-titled debut record was years in the making, complicated by the death of their guitarist Rob Jones.

“We are so pleased to share this with everyone”, says singer Chris Leech, “many years of blood, sweat and tears have gone into making this record. We’ve been through so much as a band and to come through everything with this album, shows what we are about.”

The Black Bear Kiss album launch party is set Mar 03, 2023 at The Station, Cannock town centre on the bus station. They are playing tonight (Friday, 17th February) at The Salopian, Shrewsbury in Shrewsbury. Opening support will come from Aaron W Evans, Sig and the Firepilots and “some very special guests!”

Appalachian country and roots rock band The Bear and The Bison’ self-titled debut album came out February 13, 2023.

The band is led by singer-songwriter Mark W. Lennon (Home of the Wheel and Down the Mountain), who said, “I wanted to record some of the songs we had written back in California, so they didn’t get lost. Straightforward snapshot country tunes like ‘Train, Train’ and ‘Misery’… There wasn’t really an agenda, just recording at our own pace, when we could.”

The album features Dean Vivirito (Who Can Sleep) on vocals, Harmony Griffin (Uncle Ben’s Remedy, Leroy Townes) on guitars, Patrick Jackson (Folkfaces) on standup bass, Jim Whitford on lap and pedal steel, Jacob Brockway on pedal steel, Charlie Coughlin (The Brothers Blue) on fiddle, Michael Russeck on piano and Mark Lennon on vocals, guitars, banjo, bass, and percussion.

The Bear & The Bison will be available across all digital platforms February 13, 2023.

mui zyu: Rotten Bun for an Eggless Century

Hong Kong British stirring dream-pop artist mui zyu (Eva Liu of indie-rock band Dama Scout) released her single, “Sore Bear” recently… the single taken from her debut LP Rotten Bun for an Eggless Century, set for release February 24th, 2023 via Father/Daughter Records.

“Sore Bear” is about, “a moment of calm where the protagonist has finally overcome their battles, but accepts there will be more to come. It is about being comfortable with confrontation but also having the autonomy to choose when / if to confront. It’s about protecting yourself with love and accepting that with love there will be loss.”

Chicago rock band Horsegirl recently released their debut album Versions of Modern Performance, available now on Matador Records.

The all-girls trio, featuring singer/guitarist Penelope Lowenstein, guitarist/singer Nora Cheng, and drummer Gigi Reece, is currently touring in support of the debut album.

We caught the band early in post-pandemic concerts on July 8, 2021, and wrote, “So, the funny thing is that this was an 18+ show, meaning that members of Chicago’s Horsegirl could not legally attend the show on their own. However, as performers, it’s perfectly fine. This was Horsegirl’s first tour, but you wouldn’t know, seeing as how seasoned they seem on stage. We’ve seen old, established bands screwing up and goofing around, so it was nice to see such a young band taking their shows seriously.”

American folk singer/songwriter Nina Nastasia will be releasing her first album in 12 years, called Riderless Horse, on July 22th, via Temporary Residence. The vinyl will be released in November.

Nastasia wrote:

Riderless Horse is my first solo record, and it's the first record my former partner, Kennan Gudjonsson, didn't produce.I haven't made an album since 2010. I decided to stop pursuing music several years after my sixth record, Outlaster, because of unhappiness, overwhelming chaos, mental illness, and my tragically dysfunctional relationship with Kennan. Creating music had always been a positive outlet during difficult times, but eventually it became a source of absolute misery.Kennan, a cat and I lived in a studio apartment in NYC for 25 years, finding ways to survive while making records and going on tours. Our apartment was the place where people would come stay, eat, drink, play music, and use our tub. It was quite a home we had created, but it was decaying steadily from the moment we moved in, and in the end, it was as if black mold was growing beneath the surface, undetected, and the two of us were dying and getting too weak to ever leave. We loved each other. We were each other's family, but there was ongoing abuse, control and manipulation. We hid. We didn't want anyone to see how ugly things could get, so we increasingly isolated from our friends and family. We were lost.On January 26, 2020, I made the decision to separate and live apart, and on January 27, Kennan died by suicide. What a thing, suicide. I can only feel sadness and guilt about it. Maybe I'll have other reactions to it later on.Riderless Horse documents the grief, but it also marks moments of empowerment and a real happiness in discovering my own capability. Steve Albini produced this record with me, and Greg Norman assisted. The three of us are old friends, and we did a field recording in a guesthouse built like a lighthouse that two very dear friends of mine have in Esopus, NY. It was exactly the right environment to work on this record. We all had meals together, cried, laughed, and told stories. It was perfect. It made me realize how much I love writing, playing and recording music.Terrible things happen. These were some terrible things. So, what to do - learn something valuable, connect with people, move the f**k out of that apartment, remember the humor, find the humor, tell the truth, and make a record. I made a record.

Tenci to open. We previously saw them in Aug 2021 and said, “Opening up the show was Chicago-based musician Tenci, on their last appearance with Valley Maker. The band, led by Jess Shoman, features saxophone player, guitarist Curt Oren, drummer Joseph Farago (of Joey Nebulous), Isabel Reidy (of Izzy True), were both sad and grateful for being part of the tour. Sometime when we see bands near the end of their tour, you get the impression that they’re exhausted… but not with Tenci. The band seemed like they would be forever happy if they just kept traveling town to town talking about “snakes”.”

Influential experimental band Animal Collective are back, and they’ll be stopping by First Avenue on March 21st, as part of their tour for their new album Time Skiffs.

We last saw Animal Collective at Desert Daze (in California) in Oct 2019 and wrote, “… electro-psych band Animal Collective’s set did not disappoint. They opened up with the old school tune from 2005’s Feels, Banshee Beat, fronting stunning visuals of disco dancing girls and hearts. These guys played a bunch of new material, a few being “Gem and I”, “Bolder”, and “Strangers”. Another, “DownDownDownDown” was one that was rare and unreleased. The trippy background art was ridiculous, the one with hands almost holding onto each other being my favorite. Their encore performance was “For Reverend Green”, which they hadn’t played in 12 years.”

Houston’s Escape From The Zoo is a loud, fast, punk project from Days N’ Daze’s Jesse Sendejas co-founded with his wife Veronica.

New Jersey’s Public Serpents are described as “an experiment gone wrong”.

Last month, Spoon shared their version of The Beatles 1967 fan club single “Christmas Time (Is Here Again)”, as part of the Spotify Singles: Holiday Edition 2021. The collection marks the fifth year of Spotify Singles: Holiday.

Frontman Britt Daniel says about the track, “Recording ‘Christmas Time (Is Here Again)’ was a group effort that pulled us away from rehearsals and quickly sent us down a turbulent path of what you might call the Christmas spirit. And it’s our song with the most band members doing vocals ever - pretty sure I’m counting four. THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS IS OVER.”

Ahead of their tour, Austin’s Black Pumas released their Christmas single, a cover of Lou Rawls’ “Christmas Will Really Be Christmas”. The song will be available as part of the Spotify Holiday Singles.

“We were really attracted to the message, the lyrics, the arrangement, the feeling,” frontman Eric Burton says. “It’s a message that needs to be heard right now. I was a little nervous about singing in Lou Rawls’ low register, so I sang it an octave higher and it was nice to arrange vocals with the ladies [backup singers Lauren Cervantes and Angela Miller] as well to put our own spin on it.”

Sweden’s Anna von Hausswolff will be releasing Live at Montreux Jazz Festival in January 14, 2022 (Southern Lord).

Talking about her experience at the infamous Montreux Jazz Festival Anna von Hausswolff remarks:

"In the beginning of 2013 I was texting back and forth with my friend Albin Oskarsson. He wanted me to come and play at a jazz festival that he was living nearby, it was Montreux Jazz Festival. At that point I was still quite unknown outside Sweden and regardless of my friend's many attempts to contact the festival they never returned to him with an offer. I gave up the idea, he did not. Later that same year he unexpectedly died and a few years later, in 2017, an email popped up in my inbox, it was a request to open for Nick Cave and the bad seeds at the Montreux jazz festival. The tragedy that Albin was still not around to share the excitement with me gave me sorrow.

But, through the magic of music comfort came. The show was an emotional turmoil of ecstasy and grief, shared with an incredible audience and atmosphere. And, eventually, I could see his face in the venue, floating above all others, smiling and waving towards me. I’m so happy to have been given this moment and I’m beyond grateful to Montreux Jazz Festival, John Harris and Mathieu Jaton who so beautifully recorded this special concert that I will keep close to my heart forever and ever."

Live at Montreux Jazz Festival was mixed on the “Queen Neve” desk, previously owned by Queen (thus the name ) and situated at the Mountain Studios in the casino of Montreux, now ­located at Svenska Grammofonstudion, Gothenburg - further capturing the magic.

Rooster is the title of Nick Dorian’s new album. The record name drew inspiration from his Uncle Gaetano' Guy' Valentini's love and commitment to his pet rooster. Apparently the rooster was honored with a larger-than-life statue that broke broke the Guinness World Record for being the tallest rooster monument in the world.

Nick shares, “My uncle's love and commitment to this bird is yet another reminder of how much you can get out of something so little. With love, there's always something to crow about.”

It’s hard to believe that it’s been more than a decade that London-based Wolf Alice was first formed by singer Ellie Rowsell and guitarist Joff Oddie.

They actually didn’t release their debut single, “Fluffy”, until 2013, which, of course, we wrote about it in January 22, 2013: “Wolf Alice's debut single, "Fluffy" is out February 11th on Chess Club Records. Despite thinking her name is Alice Wolf, it's really Ellie Rowsell, and her band will be doing a UK tour this year - starting off at the NME Awards Show”.

We caught them at Great Escap 2013: “Brody and Jess just saw Wolf Alice at Coalition in Brighton as part of the Great Escape Music Festival taking this weekend. Wolf Alice's next Great Escape appearance will be on Friday (05/17) at SMACK. It is a free show, with their motto as "no wristband, no problem."”

When they finally played their first concert in Minnesota, in May 2015, we were there to cover it. We noted, “Based on the excited fans and sold out status of the Turf Club, the band will definitely be returning to Minneapolis... except, of course, they'll play a much bigger venue.”

Yes, of course, they played much bigger venues, such as First Avenue in Oct 2015 and Mar 2018. Their finest hour seems to be nominated for a Grammy and winning the 2018 Mercury Prize.

Now, post-pandemic, Wolf Alice is returning to the stage at the sold-out Fine Line Music Café, in Minneapolis, on November 6th.

Fix Yourself, Not The World is the forthcoming album from The Wombats.

The popular band will be heading out on tour to promote the record in 2022, and they’re stopping by the Fillmore in Minneapolis on February 4th. We caught the band in Oct 2018 and wrote, “After some time off, the formerly Liverpool-based trio needed some triangulation logistics (singer Murph is recently married and living in LA, bassist Tord Knudsen has a family in Oslo, and drummer Dan Haggis is settled in London) to all come together, but their playing remains solid despite their distance, and the songs still have their distinctive hummable hooks and choruses amid Murph’s anxious and often somber tragi-comic lyrics.”
