Downtown Minneapolis was abuzz with Twins fans streaming into Target Field, Sturgill Simpson holding down the fort at the Armory and Wolves fans showing up early at the Target Center for a playoff series against the Warriors. And at the Fine Line, a completely different fan base all dressed up in sparkles and bright colors, showing up early to cheer on a trio from the Golden State.

To reflect the headliners, the opening act was not one but three performers:

Beane, aka Brennan Hepler, from Boston, a Berklee College of Music graduate and a contestant on American Idol who sang a duet with Josh Goban in the later rounds. His advice to the crowd: Don’t eat asiago cheese before stepping on stage, which he apparently did.

Nia Ashleigh, from Newark, also a Berklee College of Music graduate. She played Nala in the Lion King on Broadway at age ten. Her wish for the evening: to make someone cry.

buffchick, aka Erin Manion, from New Jersey, a graduate of Syracuse University, and a singer-songwriter with an EP Here Forever and LP showtime. She also played 7th Street Entry back in March.

All three performers remained on stage and supported each other with vocals as they took turns to sing. On paper it shouldn’t have worked, but there was a playful rapport between the three. For example, after Beane sang a new song “Serious” about not taking life too seriously, Nia followed up with a story about dating a guy who didn’t take things seriously enough, forgetting to pick her up at the airport, which inspired the song “Stranded”.

As the crowd waited between sets and danced to Dolly Parton’s “Nine to Five”, I was surprised by the diversity. Sure, there were teens and pre-teens girls with their parents. But there were also a lot of men, young and old, and for some reason a fair amount of gray-haired seniors, who may or may not have been with a younger generation. Whatever the case, a wide-ranging fan base, which may have spoken to the universal nature of the headliners.

Trousdale is from Los Angeles. Their name comes from the name of a pedestrian footbridge at the University of Southern California, where the trio met. They formed when Laura Jones and Georgia Greene were paired for a songwriting project. They added Quinn D’Andrea, a classically trained pianist, to help with the harmonies. From there they have been releasing quite a bit of music, already supporting their sophomore album Growing Pains, which is the perfect title to a sophomore album.

The trio opened with “Lonely Night” which encapsulates their sound, which is country-tinged pop meeting acapella-infused musical theater. Atwood Magazine best described them as turning “... life’s messiest moments into radiant folk-pop gold.”

Trousdale at 7th St Entry (Oct 5, 2023)

Trousdale was last in the Twin Cities in 2023, headlining at 7th Street Entry in October and opening for Cory Wong at the Palace Theatre in March. They said they learned a lot about touring with him, Quinn adding, “He set the bar high for us… Maybe too high.”

They definitely captured Cory’s spirit with their vocals melding into a positive force even as they tackled heavy subjects like depression in “Wouldn’t Come Back”, aimlessness in “Sleeping at the Wheel” and staying in a dysfunctional relationship in “Second Hand Smoke”.

There were also rousing numbers that showcased the trio's vocals like “Growing Pains”, which will stick with you, “Out of My Mind” a bluesy number and “Over and Over” a song that was pure-grade sunshine.

I know the poster say low ticket sales for Friday’s show… but I’m pretty sure all the Minneapolis dates for The Hold Steady have sold out. That’s how popular they are. Four shows, sold out. They could probably book the whole month and still do well… Minneapolis just loves these guys.

We saw The Hold Steady in July 2024 and said, “They started their Yacht show with “Constructive Summer” and a dedication to former Twins star Joe Mauer’s induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Finn also changed the original lyrics of “Raise a toast to St. Joe Strummer, I think he might've been our only decent teacher” to “Raise a toast to St. Joe Mauer, I think he might’ve been the greatest ever catcher.” What a dedication. Finn also joked about his outfit. He said he bought the suit, thinking he would wear it on fancy occasion, like a real Kentucky gentlemen. Of course, he’s never invited to those social events… so he’s very thankful that the Yacht Club asked the band to play - so he is proudly wearing the yachtiest suit.”

We saw Dacus in Oct 2019 and wrote, “Richmond-based singer Lucy Dacus ended the all-women show, playing plenty of beloved songs. Fans loved it… but we already this was the case when we saw her headlined the sold-out 7th Street Entry in April 2018: “Still in her early twenties, Lucy Dacus is already showing a musical maturity, years beyond her actual age. The Richmond, VA singer-songwriter is touring in support of her second full-length, Historian (Matador Records), an album of leaps-and-bounds growth for her, that is the exact opposite of any sophomore slump and she seemed genuinely happy to be headlining here, after previously opening for Car Seat Headrest and Hamilton Leithauser. Dacus is so confident in the new album (considering it her definitive musical statement), the first seven songs played were all from the new record, beginning with single, ‘Addictions’. Her seemingly calm voice belies a building sound and lyrics that dive deep into wells of adversity, though provide a glimmer of hope in any darkness.””

Katie Gavin is actually the singer from Muna, a band who opened up for Taylor Swift and Lorde, so she is used to playing for a massive crowd. Gavin’s solo album What a Relief is out now.

MUNA at T-Mobile Center (21 Jan 2022)

We saw Muna in Jan 2022 and noted, “MUNA (Katie Gavin; Naomi McPherson; Josette Maskin) would be up first, with a six-song, twenty-five-minute set that was determined to get the crowd moving en masse, and succeeded due to their restless stage presence and catchy, mostly uplifting songs including set opener, “Number One Fan”. Two slower tempo, more “country-ish” songs were done mid-set, including a yet-to-be released new song earmarked for their next album, “Kind of Girl”. The beat would pick back up with 2017’s peace-loving “I Know a Place” and the band singing, “it’s hard to love with a heart that’s hurting, but if you want to go out dancing…” with the crowd complying and ended with arguably the best single of 2021, “Silk Chiffon” which on record featured Phoebe Bridgers, the band even signing with Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records last May.”

Los Angeles’ most heavenly harmonic trio Trousdale is back in Minneapolis, playing the Fine Line on May 6, 2025. Unfortunately, I will probably be in Jacksonville, Florida, by this time – and the closest they are playing near that city is in St Augustine, which is about an hour to drive to.

We caught the band on a Halloween-show, on 28 Oct 2022, and noted, “As you can see, Sammy Rae and the Friends were in the Halloween spirit, as everyone was in costume as Scoobie Doo and the Scoobie gang. The band has a ton of fans, and they are certainly one of the funnest band around. The band played all the hit songs, including “Follow Me Like The Moon” and “Good Life”. All the songs were treated like it’s a giant party, with the audience helping to sing and clap along to the song. ”
