Seattle’s Mudhoney is back in town. The band found fame as part of the grunge movement led by Nirvana in the 90s.

Psych-rock band Hooveriii (pronounced "Hoover Three") to open. The band, featuring Gabe Flores (lead guitar and vocals), Kaz Mirblouk (bass and synths), James Novick (synths), Casey Sullivan (vocals and synths) and Owen Barrett (drums) came together and released their “COVID Record” A Round of Applause in 2022. Now that the pandemic is over, the band is heading out on tour with Mudhoney.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Tom Odell is on tour… he’ll stop at First Avenue in Minneapolis on October 18th.

We saw Odell in May 2019 and said, “With a simple piano and three-piece backing band, Tom Odell took to the stage with tousled blonde hair dressed in a dark jacket for his ninety-minute set, beginning it with 2016’s ‘Sparrow’. A Brit Awards Critics Choice winner, the Elton John-influenced Odell remains oddly still a bit of a musical secret on these shores, while the similar sounding Keane, Chris Martin, and others have gone on to wider audiences, though things may change with Odell’s continued quality output and his consistent touring.”

Alt-pop Isabel LaRosa to open. The rising pop star is touring in support of You Fear the God That Loves You.

Toronto quartet Jane’s Party is also a special guest on this tour. The indie group’s EP The Best of Wild in the Woods Vol. 1 will land in November. In the meantime, you can hear their new single, “Dirty Work (feat. Danica)” is a cover of Steely Dan’s 1972 seminal track.

For a few hours, 4^th Street in front of the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis, was figuratively and musically re-named Jubilee Road, with a dash of even Beethoven featured on the encore-

The occasion was the anticipated return of UK singer/pianist Tom Odell, in support of last fall’s Jubilee Road (Columbia Records), his third full-length that went Top Five in his native England as well as Scotland.

Another UK (Nashville-based for the last decade) singer/songwriter/pianist, Lucie Silvas opened the evening, with a heartfelt set of songs, mostly culled from her forth and latest full-length, last year’s E.G.O. (on Furthest Point/Thirty Tigers), the title of which, refers directly to everybody gets off, though it is also about the absurdity of vanity, as well.

Married to one of the alt-country duo Brothers Osborne, Silvas’ own music defies conventional description- take part lush pop, some Nashvillian country, and a splash of 60’s style Dusty Springfield/Burt Bacharach, and you have her fresh take on things.

Silvas, though new to most, was actually signed by EMI in 2000, and admitted the audience was probably unfamiliar with her music, but was grateful for the chance to introduce herself, playing her songs solo for this outing, as opposed to with a full band. Lead single from the new record, ‘Kite’ soared with Silvas crooning ”You better hold those strings ‘cause she’s gonna fly away”. She was excited to say that ‘Black Jeans’ (Co-written by JD McPherson) is getting increased recent radio airplay, and ended things nicely with the gospel-tinged uplift of ‘Everything Looks Beautiful’.

Obviously proud of his crack longtime band (Max Goff-bass; Max Clilverd- guitar; Andy Burrows- drums), each member got an impressive mini-solo early, as things segued into premier single, ‘Can’t Pretend’ and a heartfelt ‘Heal’, from the same debut album. Odell then jumped ahead on the setlist, to the new ‘Queen of Diamonds’, prefaced by an origin story of the song’s rich inspiration from two similar ideas.

Moving to guitar for the new and yet-to-be released love song ‘Tears that Never Dry’, Odell admitted he was limited in his guitar playing, but wrote the song on the instrument, so gave it a worthy go, though he seemed unsatisfied with the performance as it ended. Things picked back up returning to the piano, skipping ‘Sirens’ to forge ahead with the new Tumbleweed Connection Elton-era sounding ‘Don’t Belong in Hollywood’.

Women swooned with the chorus of 2013’s ‘Grow Old with Me’ as momentum slowly rose, morphing into full-on screaming as Odell left the piano to get close into the audience for ‘Hold Me’, before taking a breath to bring Lucie Silvas back out for a sweet don’t-know-what-you-got-'til-its-gone duet on ‘Half as Good as You’ (recorded on the new album with Alice Merton), admitting in hindsight “If I ever find anyone half as good as you, I think maybe that would do” to strongly end the main set.

For the encore, the street scene of Jubilee Road was lyrically painted with the stomping ‘Son of an Only Child’ and Odell admitting “I’m sick of singing ‘bout my broken heart, I’m a rocket man… and I’m a juvenile”, seguing into another round of rousing mini-solos by each band member. Culminating in Odell’s own mini instrumental, he chose a quiet and contemplative version of Beethoven’s ‘Fur Elise’ (aka Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor- WoO 59, Bia 515) before things shot back up to finish the song with an exclamation.

2016’s yearning ‘Concrete’ ended with a musical flash and bang, and Odell, saying he hoped to return to play in the area for many years to come, finished the evening with his biggest hit, the chart-topping ‘Another Love’, from his debut EP in 2012, still poignant and powerful, almost a decade later.

For anyone that enjoys piano-driven heartbreaking Brit pop, Tom Odell is a great and vital addition to that list, learning from those that came before him, while uniquely carving out his own musical path, and on this tour showing us a colorful street teaming with life and love stories called Jubilee Road.

Might have been the wrong crowd… but was definitely the right act—

It’s No Bad Days on Tour for UK singer-songwriter Tom Odell, on the road supporting Wrong Crowd (RCA Records), his second full-length album that shows the young artist, has plenty more to show us.

The evening was opened by Ipswich, UK singer-songwriter Barns Courtney (not to be confused with Australian singer/guitarist Courtney Barnett) in support of his Hands EP (Virgin EMI Records).  We were gutted to have missed him (due to a friend’s wedding), but like everything we’ve heard up to this point, including ‘Fire’, which was featured in last year’s Burnt film, which starred Bradley Cooper.

Tom Odell and band took to the stage amongst minimal lightning and hazy fog, to begin their ninety-minute set with ‘Still Getting Used to Being on My Own’ from the new record, which features smart song structure in an Elton John way, and choral harmonics that echoed the best Queen ballads.

Odell, wearing a tan jacket with shorter hair than previous (though it could still cover his eyes), didn’t say too much between songs, instead letting the works themselves do the talking and they often showed flashes of brilliance for the young twenty-five year old songwriter.

‘I Know’ ached like mid-70’s Bowie, the title track of the new album slowly rose to crest like a sonic tsunami and ‘Concrete’ simmered like a tea kettle.  Songs of longing and heartache were plentiful, including the brooding ‘Can’t Pretend’, with only Odell’s voice against a slow bassline to end the song that was getting too serious, enough that he himself noticed near the finish and made light of things.

‘Heal’ sounded classic, with its lyric “Take my mind and take my pain, like an empty bottle takes the rain. and heal, heal, heal, heal” and a melody that would sound contemporary forty years ago… or forty years from now.

The rare campfire-sounding b-side track, ‘Behind the Rose’ lays claim to Odell’s own quote that “having your heart broken makes for good songs” and featured just Odell and bass player Max Goff, who Odell also called “ the fifth best harmonica player in Minneapolis” in his most humble Chris Martin voice.

‘Grow Old with Me’, the lead track from his 2013 debut, Long Way Down, would probably be played at every wedding in the US, if only more people on this side of the pond were familiar with it.  Guitarist Max Clilverd kept a rock edge on everything to not get too sentimental, like on the refrain of ‘Hold Me’.

The forlorn but no less mesmerizing ‘Another Love’ ended the main set, it’s “All my tears have been used up, on another love” lyrics hitting home with anyone trying to begin again after a significant breakup.

The two-song encore began with 2013’s defiant ‘Till I Lost’ and skipped the new ‘Daddy’ though it was posted on the setlist.  A percolating ‘Magentised’, perhaps his best overall song to date, ended the evening, stretched to eight minutes that found Odell standing atop his center piano to get the crowd to clap along.

And most of the crowd were happy to do so, though were somewhat lacking the collective energy a Friday night crowd should have had, at least in comparison to the rabid European festival crowds that we’ve seen respond to that song elsewhere.  A pocket of drunk and talking girls threatened the mood, though Odell was unfazed, as was most of the crowd, instead taken deeply enough into his compelling songs and heartfelt lyrics, to hardly notice.

Despite any of that, talent shone through this night, proving Tom Odell is a just small break away from US super stardom; to match or exceed his popularity rank elsewhere, and with his music, and true to his tour name, there are No Bad Days.

Jessica Hernandez and her band The Deltas will be headlining the Triple Rock Social Club next Friday, October 14th, touring in support of their forthcoming sophomore album (due in early 2017).

Tancred (aka Jess Abbott) will be joining Hernandez on this tour, in support of her debut album Out of the Garden. We previously caught her with her full band in March 2016 and wrote, “A little backstory on Jess Abbott, who mentioned on stage that she lived in Minneapolis for five years and does not miss the snow/cold (she currently resides in California). In fact, she’s downright disappointed that it was so cold (and snowing) on the night that she was back in town. Her connection to Minneapolis is that she is the guitarist for Now, Now (fka Now, Now Every Children). We’ve seen the band on and off from 2010 to 2013 and mentioned Jess almost every time!”

Rumer Willis’ first ever U.S. concert tour is starting this October 12 in Denver, Colorado. Her “Lover the Love” stops in Minneapolis at the Dakota Jazz Club this Friday, October 14th.

Rumer explained the name of her tour, “When I was young, my dad (Bruce Willis) introduced me to the iconic vocalists of the American songbook like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Rosemary Clooney, and others. This craft of storytelling through song has always inspired me. It's such an intimate and honest way to connect with people. In my OVER THE LOVE tour, you'll get all of that throwback, speakeasy jazz vibe plus a few reimagined modern tunes mixed in as well. The concert musicalizes the many ups and downs that go hand in hand with falling in and falling out of love and I share a few of my own personal experiences as well. Ingrid Michaelson is back in Minneapolis at the Northrop Auditorium this Friday, October 14th.

Indie pop brother trio, AJR (Adam, Ryan, and Jack), will be joining this “Hell No” tour. AJR is certain ‘ready’, after their smash hit ‘I’m Ready’ hitting US Certified Platinum.

Their new track ‘I’m Not Famous’ is currently in rotation on Sirius XM Hits 1. Eldest brother Adam Met explains, “We wanted to write a quirky pop song with some ironic social commentary about the upsides of not being famous. We wrote and produced ‘I'm Not Famous’ in our living room in New York City.”
