It was Americana folk music Saturday night at First Ave from three local bands that are making sure the form is not only relevant in the age of digital music but also a howling good time.

Humbird (01 Nov 2023)

Humbird opened the evening as the crowd slowly ambled in. We caught them at the Fine Line exactly a month ago, opening for Mipso. Again it was Siri Undlin on lead vocal and guitar with Pat Keen on upright bass providing some grooved solos with a “Go Pat Go!” coming from the crowd.

After launching into a funky space duo in “Free Life,” Undlin said she just released a new song “Child of Violence” and it was the first time she got hate mail, which she and Keen welcomed, but wanted to hear it face-to-face, preferably at the merch table.

To get into the holiday spirit they invited their friend, Clifton on fiddle, to the stage to play a “deranged” Xmas song. It was not so much psychotic as a haunting lament with loose strands of “Greensleeves” hemmed throughout.

Them Coulee Boys (21 Oct 2023)

Them Coulee Boys were up next and I’m glad that they were part of the festivities for I missed part of their set while trying to get into The Old Crow Medicine Show in October. It was their third time on the First Avenue stage and Beau Janke set aside his electric banjo to say being on there was not lost on him. “We’ve been down there hoping to be up here.”

They made the most of it with an electrified, rollicking good time with Janke joined by Soren Staff on guitar, Jens Staff on mandolin, Neil Krause on bass and Staš Hable on drums. Their music is infused by Americana but most definitely amped up and electrified, especially during the crowd favorite “10ft. Tall.”

You have to wonder how a traditional form of music that has roots in the southeastern part of the country found a prominent foothold in the Twin Cities. I read more than one article that says the impetus may have come from the Grammy award-winning soundtrack to the movie “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” Which is funny considering the movie was written and directed by two brothers from St. Louis Park, MN, Joel and Ethan Coen, neither who probably ever picked up a fiddle or banjo.

The members of Pert Near Sandstone are also from the Twin Cities suburbs, Brooklyn Park and Maple Grove. They first got into music by playing in heavy metal and ska bands. But as their music lessons progressed they too were caught by infectious music of bluegrass. And for almost twenty years they have been playing music that is impossible not to dance to, mainly because their percussionist, Andy Lambert, wears a pair of clogs. He was joined on stage with Nate Sipe on fiddle and mandolin, Kevin Knibel on banjo, J Lenz on guitar, Chris Forsberg on fiddle and Justin Bruhn on bass.

After a few break-neck songs, Sipe said they were going to slow things down a bit. Then they launched into “Twenty Cups of Coffee” which indicated that the band had no intention of slowing down, even inviting members of the Wild Goose Chase Cloggers to join in with Lambert throughout the evening.

Pert Near Sandstone has a new album out, their eighth, Waiting Days. And they took the opportunity with the album to expand their musical vocabulary as in “Gathering Clouds” when they invited Jason on trumpet and Max on saxophone to help add some Spanish flair to the song. Then there was “Out of Time” written by Lenz who was asked by the members of the band, “Why are your songs so dark?”

The album was produced by Ryan Young who is not only the fiddle player for Trampled by Turtles, but was a founding member of Pert Near Sandstone. He even joined the band on stage and it was the highlight of the evening to see him, Sipe and Forsberg take over with a foot-tapping trio.

Celebrated emo/pop punk artist The Maine is on tour in support of their highly anticipated self-titled ninth album. “The Sweet Sixteen Tour” will stop in at First Avenue in Minneapolis on November 28th, 2023.

Breakout pop star Ella Vos (with means “she you”) will be heading out on a Winter tour, starting in Minneapolis on December 1st.

The California classically trained pianist, previously worked for BØRNS, before going solo in 2015. Her debut album came out in 2017, and her last release came out in 2020… so expect new songs on this upcoming tour.

The singer was last seen in town with Broods, in June 2022.

UPDATE: Blond in Car, the musical nom de guerre of Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Robin Schorr, has confirmed a U.S. tour with Ella Vos to celebrate the October album release Altavan.

We saw the band, a long time ago in Mar 2013 and said, “The show began with a viewing of the music video for the first single Ship of Fools from their upcoming album projected on the big screen. It continued with dancin’, hooting, hollering and foot stompin’! It’s apparent that this band loves playing together and the audience definitely enjoys hearing it because the energy in the main room was electric. There is so much variation in their sound, with a clogger, fiddles, a banjo, a washboard, a standup base, and acoustic guitars; it’s easy to appreciate their talent and to dance along to this bluegrass band’s jams. So next time you have a chance to attend one of their parties, pack your dancing shoes, and be prepared to walk away buzzing from the energy.”

As much as it was all about traditional Irish and Scottish folk music at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall on Friday night with Sam Shackleton and The Mary Wallopers, just around the corner, the night after, that old-time Americana folk music filled the Palace Theatre.

Them Coulee Boys were charged to warm up the crowd filtering into the venue . They are from Eau Claire, WI, Coulee being the name French Trappers called the region when they were trapping in Wisconsin. Like most folk bands they started out as a duo when Soren Staff met Beau Janke at a bible camp. It was an instant bond over music that expanded when Soren brought on his brother Jens to play mandolin, Neil Krause on bass and Staš Hable to play drums.

Them Coulee Boys have been playing as a band for ten years now and based on the crowd's reaction, they have built up quite a following.

“This is fun,” said Janke after an effusive round of applause from the crowd. “Sign of the Times” was a crowd favorite for it had the makeup of an Irish drinking song with the audience joining in on the refrain. “Find Your Muse” had the crowd not only clapping along but also simultaneously rubbing their hands together. It also became apparent that the crowd loved hearing Janke on harmonica for the biggest roar came during his solo during “10ft. Tall.”

When Old Crow Medicine Show (OCMS) began their first song “Tell It To Me” they came on like a freight train. And for two hours they put on a hoot and hollering revue of American music from bluegrass and country to rock, gospel and blues.

Like Them Coulee Boys OCMS started off as a duo, actually two duos with Ketch Secor and Critter Fuqua from Harrisonburg, VA hooking up with Willie Watson and Ben Gould from Watkins Glen NY when Secor went to college in Ithaca, NY. They started busking all over the United States. And it was busking in front of a pharmacy in Boone, NC that caught the attention of Doc Watson’s daughter who arranged an introduction to the Nashville legend. From there was the start of a 25 year career that pulled into St. Paul.

Secor adopted the role of a carnival barker and hilariously pandered to the Minnesota crowd by spewing out regional references like Polar Plunge, Grain Belt, Sinclair Lewis, Laura Ingalls Wilder, the Wild, the Vikings and Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion, which they band played for many times over the years.

Although his original crew was no longer intact, Secor brought along a rambunctious crew of PJ George, Mike Harris, Morgan Jahnig, Dante Pope, Mason Via and Cory Younts.

It’s foolish to list the instruments that the crew played for they played everything. Morgan Jahnig was the only one who stuck to one instrument, his electric and upright bass. Secor also pointed out throughout the evening that Jahnig was Norwegian. (More pandering.)

OCMS has a new album, Jubilee, and they played the self-titled song along with “One Drop” and “Miles Away.” They also played a hefty amount of rock covers like “Great Balls of Fire,” “Proud Mary” and “Rock and Roll All Nite” with Them Coulee Boys during the encore. Then there was Jimmy Buffet’s “Margaritaville” and “Forever Young” from another Minnesota singer.

When asked by CBS Minnesota who was his musical influence, Secor replied, “Certainly, Bob Dylan... Bob Dylan... Bob Dylan.”

The bard from Ely, MN has had an outsized influence on Secor for it was a bootleg song of his that inspired Secor to write the band’s greatest hit, “Wagon Wheel.” It was a song that Dylan lifted from Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup who was inspired by a recording from Big Bill Broonzy. It was throughline of 85 years that had the band and the crowd singing:

Canada’s Wolf Parade (Arlen Thompson, Dante DeCaro, Dan Boeckner, and Spencer Krug) is back with their first album in seven years (the band went dark in 2010 and only recently reemerged)!

Wolf Parade’s Cry Cry Cry came out earlier this month on Sub Pop.

Show up early to check out New York’s Charly Bliss. Their debut Soft Serve EP will be reissued on vinyl in November via Barsuk Records.

We previously caught Charly Bliss at July 2015 and May 2012 and wrote, “Hendricks and band came out charging for their forty-five minute set, with the opening ‘Percolator’, she vocally kickboxing into the song with a girlish, slightly squeaky vocal, instead of actually kickboxing as she does in the music video of the song.”
