We like the annual Basilica Block Party in Minneapolis, so we always make sure they get the spotlight whenever we do these previews. They always bring in some really good bands, and with every ticket sold, you know the money goes into maintenance and upkeep of the Basilica St. Mary.

Since there are so many bands on the bill, the Basilica Block Party divides the lineup into three stages, a large, medium, and small stage (the papa, moma, and baby bear stages as we like to call it). If you wanted to see all the bands, logistically, it’ll be pretty tough, and you’ll have to miss some songs, as the three stages goes on at different time. Check your time schedule on their website.

Northern Ireland’s Two Door Cinema Club (not to be confused with Three Doors Down) is back in Minneapolis this Saturday. We caught the band when they played the 7th Street Entry in 2010 and noted that based on the incredibly packed venue: “There was a lot of young people out that bitterly cold Thursday night, and based on how packed the small venue was for a band from Ireland called Two Door Cinema Club, I can tell you that this band is going to be huge. Especially because the band hasn't even released an album yet.”

New Zealand’s Broods will open. We caught them earlier in August 2016 and wrote, “Learning from their humble U.S. debut club tour in 2015, the band’s current shows are a 1000% improvement. With a larger stage to work in, the band had custom lights (with specific sequences for specific songs), smoke machine, and stations for new touring members Camilla, on keys, and their cousin Johnnie on drums.”

This is a really awesome bill (both bands are normally headliners) and cannot be missed.

Niger’s internationally acclaimed Tuareg guitarist and singer/songwriter Bombino recently stopped by the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, playing some selections from his latest Azel album, available now on Partisan Records.

Local garage/power pop band Teenage Moods (Gordon on guitar & vocals, Taylor on drums, Julian on bass, Kyle on keyboards, and Eliot on guitars... although they currently lists “Nikki and Pork chop” on their roster). According to singer Gordon, they have written a lot of songs... but “we don’t know [how to play] many of them,” after turning some requests from the audience.

After 40 minutes of their set, they realized that they had enough time for one more song, so they stretched out their set to 45 minutes with a song I think was called ‘Pop Song’.

As soon as Bombino and his full band took the stage at the Cedar Cultural Center, a flock of fans filled out the main dance floor, eagerly awaiting to hear Bombino play his distinctive guitar style.

If you didn’t know, Bombino (real name Omara Moctar) came from a troubled time in Niger, when there were the Tuareg people rebelled against the country in the early 90s. Niger, in fear of another rebellion, basically banned all guitars (which was seen as a symbol of rebellion). Bombino was one of the key musicians representing his people, stated, “I do not see my guitar as a gun but rather as a hammer with which to help build the house of the Tuareg people.” After two of Bombino’s fellow musicians were executed, Bombino was forced into exile from his beloved country.

The 2010 documentary Agadez, the Music and the Rebellion touch on the struggles of Niger’s largest city (Agadez) and featured Bombino as its subject. That’s about the same time that he was able to return to his home, and probably was the moment that made Bombino an international music icon.

In fact, many of today’s most popular musicians, like Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, were influenced by Bombino’s music.

With that long, rich history, the audience was made up with a big diverse group of some rare Tuareg fans, Nigerians, and some Algerians.... not the typical NPR-esque audience that the Cedar Cultural Center is known to bring in (although there were still plenty of NPR-ish fans in the audience!)

Bombino decided to play mostly from his new album Azel (Partisan Records), including the show starter and lead single ‘Akhar Zaman (This Moment)’.

The last time we saw Chicago’s Twin Peaks, they played a much bigger venue opening for Cage the Elephant in June 2016. They, of course, jokingly said, “We used to play across the street all the time [referring to their various 7th Street Entry appearances], so we’re not used to this small place.”

Twin Peaks is back in town, this time headlining the 7th Street Entry, and in support of their recent album Down in Heaven (Grand Jury).

Punk/rock band The Muffs is back on tour! The 90s band is still led by singer and guitarist Kim Shattuck with bassist Ronnie Barnett and Redd Kross’ Roy McDonald (the brother of Steve McDonald, who we randomly saw in NXNE 2011).

The trio was on hiatus for a long time, but in 2014 they came back with a new studio album Whoop Dee Doo (which we wrote about in May 2014).

Opening up this show will be The Magnolias, Teenage Moods and Travoramo Fa Fa Fa.

Chicago’s Russian Circles’s 2016 Summer tour kicks off next week, starting in Madison on August 26, followed by an appearance at Minneapolis’ Cedar Cultural Center.

The post-metal/rock trio’s sixth studio album Guidance came out August 5th on Sargent House.

Esmé Patterson is back in Minneapolis, touring in support of her new album We Were Wild (Grand Jury).

We previously caught her with San Fermin earlier in April 2016 and wrote, “Not all the songs were new, about half her set was taken from her concept album Woman to Woman, which was about her response to famous women in songs. For example, the song “Never Chase a Man” is about her response to Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” and “Bluebird” was her response to The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby”.”

Athens’ New Madrid is touring in support of their third album magnetkingmagnetqueen (Normaltown Records). Nashville's Bobby Bare Jr will be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul on Thursday, January 8th. Bare, Jr., is the son of singer Jeannie Sterling and country musician Bobby Bare, Sr.

Opening up the show will be Sam Cassidy (named "Best New Band of 2014", according to First Avenue) and Eleganza, featuring Brian Vanderwerf.

We previously caught local Afro-Cuban band Malamanya when they opened up for Los Amigos Invisibles in 2013.

We described the show as: "Opening up for Los Amigos Invisibles was local Spanish band Malamanya. They spoke fluent English between songs, but I believe most their songs were sung in Spanish (with the exception of "Red Light Morning"). Songs played, according to their setlist, were: "Deuda", "El Malo", "Red Light Morning", "Viento", "Oriente", "Amore Perdido", "Mi Son Cubano", "Lagrimas Neegas", "Temperatura", and "Rumba"."

Expect, more or less, those same Spanish songs on their upcoming show.

Opening up for the Cedar show will be local talent Alma Andina, described as a group, directed by Vladimir Garrido, and performs Andean and Latin American music.

Monsoon Season New Damage Records

To rectify that I have to tell you that Toronto-based Biblical will be opening up the show. The psychedelic rock is touring in support of their debut full-length, Monsoon Season, released earlier this year via New Damage Records (Ken Mode, USA Out Of Vietnam).

Biblical formed in 2010, and consists of Nick Sewell (bass/vocals), Jay Anderson (drums), Matt Mclaren (guitarist) and Andrew Scott (guitar).
