We caught Teenage Fanclub in Mar 2019 and wrote, “The band has been active on the alternative rock scene since 1989, but this would be their first local appearance since bassist/vocalist Gerard Love decided to leave last year over continued touring plans, but the remainder of the group (Norman Blake – vocals/guitar; Ray McGinley – vocals/guitar; Francis MacDonald – drums; Dave McGowan – keys/guitar; Euros Childs – keys) have hardly lost a musical step.”

Of course, we’re massive Belle & Sebastian fans. The Glasow band is touring in support of their new album Late Developers, and they’ll be headlining First Avenue on May 8, 2024.

We last saw the band in May 2022 and wrote, “The return to the Palace on May 27th also marked another special occasion, as they celebrated one of their crewman, Johnny Lang’s 50th birthday. They actually even planned on having him sing The Rolling Stones’ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” (after a few shots of whiskey, of course). It was quite an eventful night. Also, it’s worth noting that Sarah Martin was absent in the band, due to contracting COVID. She’s replaced by violinist/backup vocalist Kristen, at least that’s what I heard singer Stuart Murdoch say on stage.”

Haley Heynderickx to open. The singer was last seen at the Cedar Cultural Center in April 2022.

It’s been over a decade since we last saw Brazil’s CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy). The group (Lovefoxxx, Ana Rezende, Carolina Parra and Luiza Sá), is celebrating their 20th anniversary as a band and have reformed to play a limited number of dates, including Minneapolis’ Fine Line on May 9th, 2024.

“Even though we weren’t active for 20 years straight, it’s bananas to come back in 2024 to celebrate these two decades. Lovefoxxx says, “I DJ often, and I am approached by fans who tell me how much “we’ve helped them figure out themselves”, “showed a way out” out of societal norms, and even “inspired them to be who they are” - which melts my heart because most of these fans are delicate queer creative people. CSS always had this stance of not taking itself seriously and it is still true. We first got together because we wanted an excuse to live and work at the right time. We are deeply united by our sense of humor and our deep sisterhood and friendship. It’s so nice to know we touched some people and are still harvesting this love 20 years later.”

We saw CSS on their last appearance, in Jun 2013, and wrote, “This marks the first time we get to see CSS minus Adriano Cintra, who left the band last year. So how has this affected CSS on their recent tour and their music on Planta? No change. CSS is still fun, dance, alternative, pop, youth music. Whatever Lovefoxxx and company is doing, the formula is still working. It was fun to watch singer Lovefoxxx undergo some "costume changes" throughout their set. The white jacket was first to go, then the long dress, the two white fans, and finally the awesome cape at the end.”

P.S. Lovefoxxx had a huge hit with Kavinsky’s “Nightcall”, which appeared in the film Drive.

We last saw Skating Polly in Jun 2023 and wrote, “Six years later, Skating Polly is back with Chaos County Line, as they’ve matured from punk/riot music to more art-punk and even piano-driven power-pop, as found on the new record. As you can see from the setlist, the band mostly stuck to the new songs, but that’s fine, as my favorite song on their set was the energized “Hickey King”, which was played early in their set, with both Kelli and Peyton trading off vocals. Peyton had the nice lyrics, while Kelli had the much meaner lyrics.”

New Jersey’s Garcia Peoples will be headlining the 7th Street Entry on May 12, 2024. We tried to see the band in June 2022, with Meat Puppets… but unfortunately the 2022 show(s) were cancelled by the Meat Puppets due to health & safety. Now the group is back in town, bringing with them P.G. Six (the PG stands for Pat Gubler), who is set to open the show.

Note: I know the poster says “Turf Club”, but tdhe show has moved to the 7th Street Entry. Currently, for May 12th, the Turf Club is hosting “Beyond the Blinds Live”.

Punk/pop Skating Polly, a young band featuring stepsisters Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse with Kelli’s brother Kurtis, headlined the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis. The trio previously were endorsed and toured with punk legends X and Minneapolis’ grrrl punk band Babes in Toyland (we’ll get to that in a second!), but now headlining in support of their new record Chaos County Line. This was the first night of the tour.

Opening the show was Surly Grrly (a band led by Medbh McNamara & Eloïse Boigenzahn), who wasn’t originally on the bill. We previously liked them with the Aquadolls in May 2023, describing them as “very Bikini Kill”.

They’ve changed up their setlist a bit (as well as hiring a new bassist Lou Levy) since we last saw them, starting with “I Had Sex with a Girl”, a song that they’ve previously mentioned that most guys who come up to them said they’ve had the very same experience.

Highlight of their set was a cover of Babes in Toyland’s “Sweet 69”.

Next up was Bugsy, who we saw lead singer/guitarist Emily Schoonover lending her musical talent to Dad Bod in Oct 2022: “The Minneapolis-based band normally has Grace Baldwin for bass, but for the October 24th show, she was out celebrating her birthday. Instead, Emily Schoonover from Bugsy stepped in at the last minute.” Dad Bod liked Emily so much, they joked that they wanted Emily as a permanent band member.

Bugsy (Emily Schoonover, Shannon Maroney, Alex Norman and Griffen Desai) seemed to drew in the local crowd, which isn’t a surprise, considering how much love they get on TikTok. The band is fairly new, starting with their debut EP Teratoma in 2020 (during the pandemic).

Their latest single, “Slip N' Slide” is out now, and it may or may not be appearing in a new 2023 EP that the band is working on. In the meantime, you can hear their songs on their national tour with Skating Polly.

Closing out the set was Skating Polly. We first saw the band in May 2017 and wrote, “The history of Skating Polly actually started in 2009, when the two step-siblings, Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse were just 9 and 14, respectively. While we were curious about the duo, having written about them last year, the band made a big change in their DIY band in 2017: they added their brother Kurtis Mayo to the lineup.”

Then, four months later, in Sep 2017, we saw them again with X. As we previously mentioned, X was a big fan of the trio and asked them to tour with them for their 40th Anniversary as a band.

My Morning Jacket has announced plans for an upcoming North American headline tour. The fall run begins October 17 at Toronto, ON’s historic Massey Hall and then continues through a three-night stand at Chicago, IL’s Chicago Theatre on November 9-11.

The MMJ will stop by the Palace Theatre in St Paul on June 20.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Catie Turner will be headlining the 7th Street Entry on June 21st. She previously was here with Valley in March 2022.

Her latest song, “Hometown” is described as “about when you feel unsafe and unfamiliar in what is supposed to be the most familiar place in the world, all because of a failed relationship.” Turner continues, “The fear of them seeing you, and you seeing them, so you hide out in your bedroom. This goes out to everyone who has worn their hood up on an outing to WaWa or refused to go to Trader Joe’s because they didn’t want to run into their ex’s mom!”

We last saw Skating Polly in Sep 2017 and noted, “On tour for this special 40th Anniversary Tour is riot grrrl/punk band Skating Polly from Tacoma (by the way of Oklahoma City). The band is actually a sibling band, featuring multi-instrumentalist step-siblings Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse… and recently added their brother Kurtis Mayo as drummer to the lineup. We caught the trio in May 2017 and wrote that the show felt like it was sold out, thanks to their growing fanbase and support from local artists. In fact, members of local bands like Babes in Toyland (Skating Polly support Babes in a 2015 European tour), Tony Peachka, and Kitten Forever, could be seen in attendance. ‘Hail Mary’ was dedicated to Babes and “a kiss for Lori.” (Lori Barbero).”

Local group bugsy is set to open.

Los Angeles’ The Aquadolls is currently on their “Spring Fling” tour, stopping by 7th Street Entry, in Minneapolis, on Saturday night.

We weren’t originally scheduled to cover the Aquadolls, having previously committed to Dave Mason at the Pantages Theatre on this night… but we worked out our tight schedule to see both shows, but that meant missing out on the opening bands for Aquadolls.

On the day of the show, Mason announced his show’s rescheduling, due to illness... so, the good news was that we could see all the bands on the all-ages Aquadolls show.

Starting the show was local band Surly Grrly, who was last seen with The Dollyrots and the Von Tramps in March 2023. The queercore band is fronted by Medbh McNamara and Eloïse Boigenzahn, who takes most of the spotlight in their set, by trading lead vocals on certain songs.

They have a very Bikini Kill sound, with songs like “Piss Boy” and “Hey Little Girl.”

There were two covers in their set, the first was Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time” (but done in the style of Slothrust), and Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name.”

Next up was trio Allergen (front by Shannon Maroney with Mia on bass and Anna on drums), who was last seen with The Aquadolls and Sitting On Stacy in April 2022.

Shannon didn’t talk much between sets, except to make brief comments whenever they’re tuning their instruments. For example, you get the impression that they didn’t want to use social media… but in the modern age, they’re forced to use these tools to get their music out. We can relate, having abandoned a Facebook for many years. So, if you search for the group, they’re using “Allgerg3n” to stand out.

It looks like their last release was called Honesty Hour in 2020, but since then, they’ve released a few demo collections and a new single called “Dirt”.

The Aquadolls (Melissa Brooks, Keilah Nina, Jacqueline Proctor) closed out the show, stepping on the stage to their intro music of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” We never knew the origin of the band’s name, but having heard the cheesy line “I’m a Barbie Girl in a Barbie World…”, it suddenly made sense.

Over ten years ago, band leader Melissa Brooks formed The Aquadolls to channel her angst through music, which were influenced from pop music to riot grrrl.

You can tell they admire women that came before them in music, such as The Go-Go’s, which they did their faithful version of “Vacation.” We have to admit that Jacqueline Proctor does a pretty good Belinda Carlisle.

They also love Australian alternative band Lash, based on their cover of “Take Me Away”, which most Americans would have heard through actress Christina Vidal (with Lindsay Lohan) singing the song in the 2003 Freaky Friday film. The funny thing is that the original line “It’s the same old sh**, never ends” was replaced with “It’s the same old stuff, never ends,” because it’s a Disney film. Of course, we got the full original Lash version when Aquadolls plays it. As a cover lover, we approved of this cover.

The rest remaining set had some songs from the forthcoming Charmed album, including “Far Far Away,” which Melissa described as “a fairytale twist on the working class, discussing that the only person who can truly save you is yourself” and “Beachy”, which was the penultimate song.

Charmed will be available June 2nd, via Enci Records.

Los Angeles’ The Dollyrots will officially kick off their The Hey Girl 2023 USA Tour in Chicago, before stopping by the Uptown VFW, in Minneapolis, on March 10th. The band is currently in the middle of a UK tour.

The Dollyrots’ are working with Little Steven Van Zandt’s Wicked Cool Records, and their most recent release is Down The Rabbit Hole, a 24-track collection of B-sides, rarities, and cover songs.

We first wrote about the band in Sep 2012 when they released their self-titled album via Storefront Recordings.

Country music artist Morgan Wade will be headlining First Avenue on March 11, 2023.

Officially Wade has one album Reckless on Thirty Tigers, but she has way more songs in her music catalog… thanks to unreleased songs and her self-release Puppets with My Heart (under The Stepbrothers) in 2018.

The American country music singer is based out of Floyd, Virginia, and began writing songs as freshman in college. When performing at FloydFest, Jason Isbell’s sound engineer gave her record to guitarist Sadler Vaden, and with his help, they put together Reckless. The record charted number 14 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers charts.

The hit album was re-released as a Deluxe Album in early 2022, with six bonus track… one of them being a cover of Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds”.

Alternative/pop 18-year-old singer artist Jessie Murph (not to be confused with Jessie Murphy) will be heading out on her first ever North American tour in support of her debut mixtape. It is set to release February 10th and will also include songs “Always Been You,” “If I Died Last Night,” and “Pray” as well as three new tracks.

One of those new song is called “About You”. The track was recorded with Gabe Simon (Dua Lipa, Noah Kahan) and Yakob (6lack, Giveon), and drew inspiration from her personal experience with a toxic relationship.

Note: Murph’s show was upgraded to the Fine Line, from the 7th Street Entry.
