It could not have been planned any better--
On the Summer Solstice, aka the first day of summer, and the longest day of the year, Austin, TX Trop-pop duo Summer Salt hit downtown Lawrence for a stop at The Bottleneck, to celebrate the release of their latest full-length, Campanita, out last month (via Wax Bodega Records).
A good thing it was the longest day of the year, as it was also a full night of entertainment, beginning with young Addison Grace, a California-based (by way of Salt Lake City) bedroom pop singer-songwriter who developed a social media following after uploading songs on multiple platforms, and who released not one, but two EPs last year, Immaturing and Things That Are Bad for Me.
Grace moved between ukulele and guitar, starting the set with first-ever single, 2020’s “Sugar Rush” and would let the audience pick between two possible cover songs, before choosing “If I Were a Fish” by Pittsburgh singer-songwriter corook (w/Olivia Barton) who by the way, happened to be in our area in late March at a sold out show at Encore in KC.

Next up were Boston indie rockers The Rare Occasions, a well-received trio, playing in the State for their very first time, in support of their Attaboy EP, released near the end of last year (as a follow-up to 2021 full-length, Big Whoop).
Halfway through their set, they played “Notion” a 2021/2022 single which came out in multiple versions, catching some fire after the song went viral on TikTok. Their latest single is called “Start This Over” and while the band’s lyrics can often be characterized as philosophical and somewhat existential, the guitars and big sound make you pay attention to the music as well.
Being visitors to the state for the first time, the band asked the crowd what they should do while here, and someone shouted “Visit the biggest ball of twine!” As that’s actually located in Cawker, KS, some 200 miles northwest, we’re betting they didn’t make it there this time, giving them the perfect excuse to return soon.

Summer means surf, sand, and warmth, and the music of Austin, TX Trop-pop duo Summer Salt (aka singer/guitarist Matthew Terry and drummer Eugene Chung) is the ideal soundtrack for days which are getting, and staying warm and humid out. In addition to the new fourth studio album, the band recently filmed a music video for new single “Macaroon” in Thailand where they toured this Spring, even selling out three headline shows and played to thousands at music festivals while in Asia.
The band is no stranger to Lawrence though, coming to town since 2014 (first playing at The Replay Lounge), and our Ed-in-chief Vu mentioned back in 2020, that their 2014 debut EP, Driving to Hawaii, was in mainstay rotation on his playlist for that summer. Their KU connections run deep as well, with a band member’s sister going to school locally and touring member Anthony Barnett proudly sporting his own Jayhawk t-shirt for the evening, while the rest wore appropriate beach designs.
The new album does get heavy in theme, dealing with grief as the 2021 loss of two of singer Terry’s relatives (a cousin and his sister, who was nicknamed the album’s title), but the sunny musical beach vibes still allowed for joy, bliss, and togetherness, and the crowded mass assembled was eager to interact with the band.
All hands went in the air with drummer Chung’s encouragement, waving from side-to-side or just up randomly with a collective glee, and (for whatever random reason) the band wanted the audience to say “Ka-Chow!”, the Lightning McQueen catchphrase from Pixar’s Cars movies (ok, maybe you just had to be there...)
After a dreamy, fun main set, the three-song encore started somewhat gently, with singer Terry beginning one of the songs about his departed sister, “April Baby” solo, but the band would join in midway, and finish the track with a higher volume.
2017’s “Revvin' my CJ7” is not an ode to the longtime Jeep model; rather about Terry’s father and the influence he had on his family growing up, and the night would end with the title track from the new album, with singer Terry vividly remembering his sister and emotionally singing, “Hold me tight, don't ever go, I'll be singing on and long live Campanita”.
Summer is officially here-- on the calendar, on the thermostat, and heard inside of the walls of The Bottleneck in Lawrence, with duo Summer Salt helping celebrate the season and providing the first night’s ideal soundtrack.
