Okay, New Zealand’s The Beths had to cancel a few shows due to COVID-19 and other matters… Hopefully this upcoming date at the Fine Line Music Café on March 4th will not be moved.

We caught The Beths at Rock the Garden 2019 and wrote, “Chicago Tribune called The Beths, one of the “best up-and-coming bands”, so we were really eager to catch this young New Zealand trio (Elizabeth Stokes, Jonathan Pearce and Benjamin Sinclair) on tour. This is also partly because they are one of those few bands that we haven’t covered and was excited to see their first time in the area.”

Platinum-selling American Alternative rock band Toad the Wet Sprocket is returning to Minneapolis as part of their tour for their new album Starting Now.

The 2021 tour is the first time the band is back on the road since their 30th Anniversary tour in 2019. We caught the band in July 2015 and noted what a massive fanbase they have: “Very dedicated fans, driving as far as South Dakota, was at the show on Thursday. Most of them proudly buying the VIP package, which included a pre-signed poster of the current Smash Mouth/Toad tour and other goodies only available on only on this tour and side show.”

Chicago experimentalist Ryley Walker headlined the 7th Street Entry on October 4, touring to spread the word that he’s re-imagined Dave Matthews Band’s lost 2001 album The Lillywhite Sessions. The record will arrive November 16 on Dead Oceans.

Opening up for Walker was fellow Chicagoan long-standing musical project Health&Beauty (aka Brian Sulpizio). If you ever worked in a department store, you may know that the make-up section is referred to as Health & Beauty, or “HABA” (health and beauty aid) for short. Anyway, the Sulpizio would also double as Walker’s guitarist, along with bassist Andrew Young and drummer Ryan Jewell, for his main set… billed with imagination as Ryley Walker and Band.

If you count how many songs the band play, often stealing from other musicians (which Walker would be the first to confess), it’s not very much. Perhaps only eight songs were played, but for Walker and Band, they extend each song in long jams… followed by long stories about Walker’s youth. For example, how rad it was to work at his favorite job at Culver’s. Well, it was his favorite job, that is, until he “discovered the dark arts of Built to Spill”.

Cult-like gothy electro duo Crystal Castles is back in Minneapolis, this time touring in support of their new 2016 album Amnesty (I) (Casablanca Records). The last time they were in town, it was November 2012 at First Avenue. The Toronto-based duo (Ethan Kath and Edith Frances) is known for their energetic, often chaotic live shows.

UPDATE: The Guidance (AKA Stefan Pruett) will be opening the show. He is a friend of the band and was personally invited to come tour with Crystal Castles on this 2016 tour.

The Guidance's music is self-described as "Future Grunge" (electronic synth sounds, driving beats, and dance elements representing the aesthetic and energy of '90s grunge - all sequenced digitally instead of live instrumentation).

As with previous Crystal Castles shows, perhaps The Guidance will also help with the rhythm section for their show...

Speaking of Walker... Join Colin Stetson for his special “Reimagination of Henryk Gorecki’s Iconic Symphony No.3” show at the Walker Art Center, as part of the unique Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra’s Liquid Music series.

Stetson (along with Sarah Neufeld) recently appeared at the Turf Club in August 2016.

Virtuosic composer/saxophonist Colin Stetson reimagines Henryk Górecki's iconic Symphony No. 3 (best known from the 1992 Nonesuch Symphony of Sorrowful Songs recording), a heartbreaking modern masterpiece with an unexpected and expansive sonic palate. Stetson draws on a uniquely constructed all-star ensemble that employs electric guitars, synthesizers, drums, and woodwinds to create transformative extensions to the emotional core of the piece. Stetson's 12-member ensemble features some of the most in-demand musicians in the country: Colin Stetson (alto/bass saxophones, contrabass clarinet), Shahzad Ismaily (synth, guitar), Megan Stetson (mezzo-soprano voice), Matt Bauder (tenor/baritone saxophones, clarinet), Dan Bennett (tenor/baritone saxophones, clarinet), Sarah Neufeld (violin), Rebecca Foon (cello), Gyda Valtysdottir (cello), Ryan Ferreira (guitar), Grey MacMurray (guitar), Justin Walter (electronic valve instrument, keyboards), and Greg Fox (drums). Deer Tick will be returning to Minnesota at the Turf Club in St Paul this Saturday, April 9th... on their “Acoustic” tour. We’ve seen the band a few times, and we know them as a rowdy band. Should be interesting to see them perform their well-known songs in acoustics.

Touring with Deer Tick will be Ryley Walker with a forthcoming Record Store Day (April 16th) release called Cannots (with Charles Rumback). The record will come in limited edition electric-blue vinyl, featuring cover art by Adam F Scott.
