The co-headlining show of The Mattson 2 (featuring Jared Mattson) and Paul Cherry will take place at the Turf Club in St Paul on August 9th, 2023.

The two met in Boise at Treefort and since then they’ve kept in touch and decided to collaborate in the studio and on the road together…. The result of this Paul Cherry VS Mattson 2 collaboration is called Head 2 Head.

Indie band The Drums will be headlining the Varsity Theater this August 9th, in support of their new album Jonny (ANTI- Records).

We saw The Drums in Sep 2014, and said, “Opening with “Bell Laboratories” from the new album before busting out some oldies, bleach-blonde frontman Pierce said little, but emoted lots. In front of a four piece group of players that included longtime guitarist and founding member Jacob Graham and a giant patch bay synthesizer, Pierce cooed and wailed in a voice as fluid as the movements of his swaying body. Fans writhed with joy and echoed the choruses of favorites like “Money” and “Book of Stories” and raised their hands in approval of new songs like “I Can’t Pretend” and “Magic Mountain” (which sounds much better live than it does on the recording).”

The National is on tour in support of their ninth studio album, First Two Pages of Frankenstein (4AD Records).

We saw the band on their first appearance post-COVID, in Sept 2022, and wrote, “The National then took the stage for a nineteen song set from eight albums spanning over a twenty-year career. We Heart Music last saw them headlining the Rock the Garden festival at the Walker Art Center in June of 2019. “It’s good to see you,” said lead singer, Matt Berninger, to the crowd. “It’s been a while.””

New Zealand’s The Beths will open. The group has a strong Minneapolis fanbase, thanks to local radio station The Current and labeled “one of the greatest indie-rock bands of their time” by Rolling Stone.

We saw the group in March 2023, a rescheduled tour date, and noted, “The Beths opened up their set with “Future Me Hates Me” and then a crowd favorite: “You Wouldn’t like Me.” The band from Auckland, New Zealand was nice enough to return to the Twin Cities after their show was originally cancelled on February 22nd due to you guessed it: a massive snow storm.”

Fresh off a tour with the legendary Neil Young, Los Angeles’ Chris Pierce will be headlining shows on his own.

Pierce’s album Let All Who Will will be coming out September 1, 2023… in the meantime, you can preview the single “Meet Me at the Bottom” on all the music platforms.

Here’s what Chris has to say about the single: “We all have different circumstances that lead to struggle in life. If we can lay our fear and divisiveness down, we may find a venerable place at the bottom to rise together. Philadelphia’s Mo Lowda and the Humble headlined the 7th Street Entry on Friday, April 21, 2023.

Opening up the show was explosive guitar/drum Virginia duo Illiterate Light (singer-guitarist Jeff Gorman and drummer Jake Cochran). The group is touring in support of their album Sunburned, out now via Thirty Tigers.

They opened their set with “Wake Up Now”, running at 100 miles per hour. Their high energy performance continues to “Closer”, seeing Jeff head-banging and Jake standing on amps or running through the crowd… the band never seem to slow down. When they are transition between songs (tuning), they’re often playing random notes and drum noises so there’s no dead air.

Highlight of their set was a cover of Neil Young’s “Vampire Blues”, but they’ve extended the song in length and long middle-break.

They ended their 45-min set with “Better Than I Used To”, singing “Some days, I feel good and some days, I feel bad… but every time that I think of you, I feel better than I used to.”

Despite the freeze and snow (in mid-April!), fans lined up outside the Entry to try to get in to see Mo Lowda and the Humble, which is a good sign for this dynamic, progressive alternative rock band.

Speaking of the weather, the band (which started as a trio song singer/songwriter Jordan Caiola, drummer Shane Woods, and bassist Nate Matulis) gained notice when they signed to Bell Tower Records, to release their debut album Curse The Weather, in 2013.

Now the group expanded with touring member Kirby Sybert, for their new album self-titled album and touring strong and building up a strong fanbase from across the country.

Speaking to some new fans, they’ve never seen Mo Lowda before, but through word of mouth, they decided to come check out the band. If they love the band, they’re going to spread the word to their friends… and that’s the best kind of advertisement.

A sold out show and the crowd showed up early for the headliner was also the opening act. That’s what a band can do after releasing 19 albums over a 37-year span.

How best to describe Yo La Tengo, a band that may have not achieved commercial success as much as the respect of its fellow musicians and critics alike. All Music has a pretty good description:

In many respects, Yo La Tengo are the quintessential indie rock band, melding elemental, often noisy guitar work against melodies infused with an understated sweetness that made even their noisiest freakouts feel accessible and their extended jams compelling in their exploration.

Based out of Hoboken, NY, Yo La Tengo was formed in 1984 by the husband and wife team of Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley. After a run of bassists, James McNew joined in 1992 and stayed.

Why isn’t Yo La Tengo a salsa dance band? Funny story! The origin of the band’s name comes from a 1962 baseball incident where two New York Mets players ran into each other on a fly ball for Venezuelan shortstop, Elio Chacón, had no idea what centerfielder, Riche Ashburn, was saying when he shouted: “I got it.” (“Yo la tengo.”)

Ashburn decided to learn a little Spanish to avoid future collisions.

Yo La Tengo may not play many cumbias, but they have been described as musical omnivores with a penchant of melding different musical styles while covering songs from other bands.

They started the evening on a rather mellow vibe. Even after a fan shouted out “We love you!” Kaplan only responded with a subtle “Thanks.” They were there mostly to play, but Kaplan did wonder where the First Ave pinball machines had gone. Then he tried to remember when that would have been.

A highlight was a Kaplan guitar solo during “Apology Letter” from the group’s latest album This Stupid Word. It started out, distant and soulful, as if deep in some musical harbor before moving into a noisy crescendo then back to the distant fog.

Hubley finished the first set singing “Miles Away” establishing an atmospheric tone in which the lyrics melded into a repeated incantation of: “Nah… Nah… Nah…”

After a break the trio started the second set with Kaplan turning his guitar upside down and pounding the strings with his fist. From there, the noise and distortion became amplified.

Like a set of utility baseball players, the trio then kept switching positions. For “Stockholm Syndrome” McNew sang lead; on “I Should Have Known Better” he played guitar. Then he moved to join Hubley on percussion for a crowd favorite “Autumn Sweater” from the band’s seminal I can Hear the Heart Beating as One.

During “I Heard You Looking” Alan Sparhawk from Low nonchalantly stepped onto the stage and manned the keyboard to join in on the jam session that had Kaplan switching between three guitars. It was by far their longest and best song of the evening.

For the encore, Mark Freeman of NNB was invited to play along to Neil Young’s “Time Fades Away”. Then Sparhawk rejoined with his guitar to help with Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams”.

Then after all the noise and distortion, Hubley stepped up to the mic to sing a lullaby: “Dreaming” by Sun Ra. She sang with an understated sweetness to send the crowd home.

Hawaiian-born, currently based in Lawrence, Kansas, Kawehi (Kawehi Wight), billed as I Am Kawehi, headlined the Turf Club in St Paul on October 21st.

Opening the show was British singer/songwriter Waiting for Smith (Harry Lloyd)… his first stop on this tour, directly from London. When asked about his odd stagename, he said it was named after his drummer, who never showed up for practice. I guess he’s still waiting.

The former ski instructor had a lot of stories, including the fact that he’s currently staying at a “haunted” monastery, and how he bought a new acoustic guitar in Minnesota (only to accidentally drop it when he was switching guitars).

Like Kawehi, Waiting for Smith is a one-person band, so it came to a point in his set, for “Trade It In”, that requires a trumpet player. Obviously, he didn’t have a trumpet nor a trumpet player, so he made trumpet sounds with his mouth. That was a highlight of his set. It was somewhat cringey … but it’s part of the charm.

Most of his set were original songs, except for a Lola Marsh cover, “Only For A Moment”. He really loves the song and encouraged everybody to watch the ping pong music video.

Around the 25 minute mark, Waiting for Smith announced that he was going to play his last song, however, he quickly had to backtrack, after hearing instructions from the man on the soundboard. He was told he had to stretch out his set…. So without a beat, he had to improvised a Neil Young cover of “Old Man”, complete with bad falsetto, of course.

When I Am Kawehi came on stage, the audience all moved to the front of the dance floor.

“Good, I don’t have to ask you guys to come up front!,” Kawehi said, as she started to introduce her hilarious first song called, “Thanks for Saying I Look Pregnant.”

She followed this up with a cover of Nine Inch Nail’s “Closer”, with the explicit lines, “I wanna f*** you like an animal, I wanna feel you from the inside.”

After she ended the song, she confessed, “My parents hates it when I play that song... Sorry, Mom!”

One of the most interesting thing about I Am Kawehi is that she produces all the music on stage, all live, whether it’s her own original songs, or covers, like Dua Lipa. How she does this is using a looper to play back sounds. For example, she might play a guitar chord and set it on loop, while she adds another layer with a different instrument. It’s quite interesting to see it live and worth checking out if you haven’t seen it for yourself.

She mentioned that she only started doing it because band members can be unreliable (see naming for Waiting for Smith). She laughed and added, however if the drums sucks, then she is to blame, not the drummer.

If you love hypnotic singing and melodies and synthpop and Twin Peaks, you really need to check out Chromatics next .... Desire As for the soundtrack, I love it too! The songs are synthy, I guess for that 80s tone that I previously mention that the film is drenched in. The soundtrack is courtesy of Lakeshore Records ....

Portland’s Chromatics is back in town on a rare tour. The last time they were at First Avenue, it was with Hot Chip in July 2012… so it’s been a good seven years since they played here.

All three bands listed on this Double Exposure tour had Johnny Jewel in them… so the man was basically playing three hours a night. He had so much dedication, and I think is really the mastermind behind this whole tour.

Starting the show was Vancouver’s In Mirrors (Jesse Taylor with Johnny Jewel). The duo played in near-darkness for their entire set, with some video images shown in the background. The darkness did help with the feeling of isolation, which was a real focus on their debut LP Escape from Berlin.

Closing out the set, Taylor asked the audience, “do you want a fast or slow one?” I’m not sure what the crowd said in response, but the answer was In Mirrors playing a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia” (assuming they said “slow”).

Next up was Montreal’s Desire, featuring frontwoman Megan Louise, with Johnny Jewel on synthesizers, and Aja (from Heaven) on additional synth (she took place for Nat Walker, who is normally in the band). The group is probably the most pop of the three bands, as evident by their stand-out pop-ish song “Mirroir Mirroir”, telephone-prop for “Don’t Call”, and their Italo Disco cover of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle”. That was such a great cover, that it was hard to follow that up with their closing song, “Under Your Spell.” However, it’s still a good choice, because it’s probably their best-known song. The song was featured in the underrated and amazing Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive soundtrack (we mentioned the soundtrack in 2011).

Finally, Chromatics closed out the show. Before we talk about the show, I wanted to mention that I really love the overall theme and re-invention of the band. I’m talking about the eerie-movie visuals from Johnny Jewel (mixed by video artist Danny Perez from Antibirth and Panda Bear), the neon-lights at their merchandise table, and atmospheric lighting. It’s really cool, and I’ve never seen so many fans buying merchandise at a show. That’s because the prices are so affordable, it’s like they made those neon lights with the prices ten years ago.

The other thing I wanted to address is their long hiatus from the music scene. In 2014, the band announced Dear Tommy… but the record never came out because Johnny Jewel, a perfectionist, destroyed all copies of the album after a near-death experience. According to legends, Jewel re-recorded the entire album, but as of this writing, the record has yet to see the light of day. Some singles, like “Just Like You” and “I Can Never Be Myself When You’re Around” came out before the record was scrapped… so you got a glimpse of what the record sounded like.

Anyway, currently, at least for this tour, Chromatics features Ruth Radelet, Adam Miller, Matt Miller (replacing Nat Walker), and Johnny Jewel. The show is really special to brothers Adam & Matt, who told us that they grew up in Minneapolis. So when they were young, and going to concerts, “First Avenue was this place that was a doorway to a different reality.” They were very grateful to be on stage, closing their speech with “Thank you, thanks a lot.”

Since being absent from touring in so long (Chromatics’ last live show was five years ago), they did the right thing by playing some of the fans’ favorite songs… playing everything from “Kill for Love” to “Blue Girl” (with Adam Miller on lead vocals), and their cover of Neil Young’s “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)” (which closed out their set).

For the encore, Ruth came back solo to play a stripped down (and slowed) version of Springsteen’s “I'm on Fire”. The cover has been quite popular recently (with Lykke Li, Brown Shoe, Young Turks, AWOLNATION, Ten Fe, and Soccer Mommy from our previous coverages).

The rest of the band joined Ruth to close out the encore with their recent hit “Shadow” (which was used in Twin Peaks Season 3) and a cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)”.

If you are on the fence about seeing Chromatics, you should do it… especially if you enjoy the work of Johnny Jewel (who had his finger in every aspect of the show). Also, who knows when the band will get together for another tour, so take this opportunity to see the band, at what I considered, is their finest hour.

A Perfect Circle is back in town. This time at the new Armory venue and in support of their new album Eat The Elephant (the band's first new album in fourteen years!).

We caught the band in November 2017 and wrote, “With a sheer curtain between the crowd and the band, A Perfect Circle began their hundred-minute set with 2003’s ‘The Package’, the curtain dropping mid-song as Keenan sang “give this to me!” to a roaring crowd. The set was, and remained mostly in darkness for the show, bassist McJunkins and guitarist Billy Howerdel prowled out front as Keenan, James Iha on rhythm guitar/keys and drummer Friedl were each perched on individual round platforms towards the back of the stage. Keenan stayed mostly in darkness throughout, though his flowing blonde wig was visible as he swayed and moved about in the fog and black.”

Badflower and Night Club (Goth-pop duo featuring flame-haired Emily Kavanaugh) will open.

Note: Tricky will not be appearing at the Minneapolis show.

Speaking from seeing ZZ Ward live several times, I can tell you that attendance to her shows are terrific (I believe she sold out every time she played in Minneapolis), thanks to support from radio station Cities 97. Her upcoming Minneapolis show (September 25) sold out, so I believe she's actually added another date (September 26) due to demands.

The Young Wild is Bryan B William (singer/guitarist), Gareth Moore (bassist) and Brandon Zedaker (drums). Look for the California band's debut album sometime in 2016. What a great theme, obviously based around Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the 1964 children's book turned into two featured films. When asked about the title and homage, band leader Les Claypool said that the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder, was important to him, and confessed, "in some way, wanted to be Willy Wonka."

We saw the band live in Minneapolis in 2012 in support of their then-album WIXIM, and I noted that the band are massive Prince fans... even getting tattooed for the special occasion. Plus, the entire crowd was moshing and dancing to all the three-song encore.
