Last night may have been one of the few times the opening and headliner not only shared the same producer for their latest albums, but that producer, Shane Leonard, also supported both bands by playing drums.

Humbird opened the evening with Siri Undlin on lead vocal and guitar and Pat Keen on upright bass.

Undlin said it was a little weird to be playing at the Fine Line for she is currently on the road, but also back in her hometown, playing in front of a welcoming crowd of friends and family. She and Keen in fact had been in town for two days and did the only logical thing a musician would do with a day off - laundry.

Undlin grew up in south Minneapolis, performing in Irish ensembles and church choirs. She spent her first year out of college on a fellowship traveling through Norway, Scotland and Ireland researching Nordic and Gaelic folk songs.

The band she formed melds these traditions with American folk music, country and I believe based on some of Keen’s bass solos, elements of improvisational jazz.

Undlin’s songs are a nice amalgamation, never preachy, never strident, but light of touch and deeply thoughtful. Like the song “Summer Storm for Charlotte” from her sophomore album Still Life, a song about Undlin’s five year-old neighbor learning to ride a bike hours before her and Undlin’s homes would be filled with tear gas during the George Floyd Riots.

Mipso next took the stage. They are an Indie folk band based out of Chapel Hill, NC with Jacob Sharp on mandolin and guitar, Joseph Terrell on guitar, Libby Rodenbough on fiddle and keys and Wood Robinson on bass. They all sing and they are in their sweet spot when crowded around one microphone.

With ten years on the road, Mipso found themselves at a crossroads, frankly burnt out by the demands of relentless touring. Was it the seven year itch to call it quits? Well, they decided to stick it out and expand their musical horizons on their sixth album Book of Fools set to release November 23rd.

Based on the new songs it sounds like they are all looking to explore other musical avenues with songs that had Rodenbough playing an Irish dance lick and Terrell responding with a bluesy, soulful retort; Robinson taking his time to lay down some fine introspective bass solos, and the whole band turning to a reggae vibe for the encore.

But it wasn’t all experimental. Sharp acknowledged the reason everyone came was to hear and sing along to songs like “Hurts so Good” from Coming Down the Mountain,” “Louise” from Dark Holler Pop and a personal favorite “Wallpaper Baby” from their self-titled album:

Also, let it be noted that it wasn’t all experimental on their soon to be released album. “Carolina Rolling By” is a sweet, wistful song that will have fans singing along next time Mispo comes to town.

The dreampop/ethereal pop/shoegazing trio constists of Kazu Makino and twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace. Kazu and Simone traded vocals per songs, back and forth, and they seem to know their set very well (possibly playing the same set every night).”

Psychedelia and blues-infused alt-rock band Bluphoria is thrilled to announce their fall co-headlining tour with singer/songwriter Noah Vonne.

Bluphoria’s self-titled debut album came out in the Summer on EDGEOUT Records / UMe / UMG.

Noah Vonne is a Texas-born, but based in Hollywood. The blues rocker is said to fit alongside singers Janis Joplin, Pat Benatar, Melissa Etheridge, and Alanis Morrissette. Her debut album We Weren’t Sober was recorded with multi-platinum musician, writer, and producer Jimmy Messer.

There will be a local opener for this show, but as of this writing no bands have been announced.

It's been more than 20 years since the Kevin Smith film Mallrats, in some ways, was ahead of its time. The two joked about meeting in a hot tub (a recurring joke throughout the panel) and reflect back on that film. Apparently Rooker broke Jason Lee's beloved skateboard off set.”

London's Shopping will be in town next Wednesday, October 28th, in support of their new album, Why Choose (out now via FatCat Records).

The trio (guitarist Rachel Aggs, bassist Billy Easter and drummer Andrew Milk) formed in 2012, playing "disco-not-disco" drums and "sharp as broken glass" guitars. Show up early to find out why critics are calling them "bands you need to hear" and "artist to watch".

Headliner will be Shannon and the Clams, who we caught in 2011 and 2013. We have described them as 60s beach rock.

Also on this bill will be local Larry Wish & His Guys (who previously opened up for Twerps.

I think Nathaniel Rateliff and his band The Night Sweats have finally made it. It's hard to believe that we've been writing about him since 2013, but currently selling out shows across the country thanks to their hit song "S.O.B.", from their self-titled debut album.

As usual in Rocktober: there are too many shows.

Below are some shows taking place on October 28:

Allison Weiss will be stopping by The Nether Bar at Mill City Nights. We previously saw her headlined in 2013.

New York's Mal Blum is one of the openers, currently on tour for their latest studio album You Look A Lot Like Me (Don Giovanni Records). The record was produced by Screaming Females' Marissa Paternoster. Also on the bill is Los Angeles-based dream pop/shoegaze band Winter, they are touring in support of their debut LP earlier this year on Lolipop Records, with all-new single on Burger Records.

Finally Kid In The Attic (not to be confused with Kids in the Hall) will squeeze in.... Usually when I see that four bands are on the bill (at a regular show), the first band comes on very early and will only play for about 20 to 25 minutes... so if you want to catch everyone, show up when doors open at exactly 7:30pm (7:30pm/$12).

Breakthrough soul and R&B artist Leon Bridges sold out First Avenue. Kali Uchis to open. Quite impressive for the artist's first ever national tour. If you missed out because it's sold out, don't worry - he's already announced winter 2016 dates (7:30pm/$20/Sold Out).

Deafheaven will be over at the Fine Line Music Cafe, in support of their latest New Bermuda (Anti- Records). Special guest Tribulation to open (8pm/$16).

Folk band Mipso is headlining Cedar Cultural Center, in support of their latest Old Time Reverie (Robust Records). Joining them on this show will be 10 String Symphony. Note: they are not a 10 string symphony but the name of a Nashville duo (Rachel Baiman and Christian Sedelmyer) (8pm/$16).

Langhorne Slim will play Triple Rock Social Club, in support of their latest The Spirit Moves (Dualtone Music). Canadian Daniel Romano to open (7:30pm/$16).
