Genre-fluid four-piece Polyphia have announced a massive extension to their “Remember That You Will Die World Tour” with the second leg of the tour kicking off this fall in Oklahoma City on Sept. 30. The tour will stop by First Avenue in Minneapolis on October 17, 2023.

Seattle’s Mudhoney is back in town. The band found fame as part of the grunge movement led by Nirvana in the 90s.

Psych-rock band Hooveriii (pronounced "Hoover Three") to open. The band, featuring Gabe Flores (lead guitar and vocals), Kaz Mirblouk (bass and synths), James Novick (synths), Casey Sullivan (vocals and synths) and Owen Barrett (drums) came together and released their “COVID Record” A Round of Applause in 2022. Now that the pandemic is over, the band is heading out on tour with Mudhoney.

We previously saw Kill Kult in Oct 2017 and said, “For this special 30th Anniversary tour, the band (Groovie Mann, Buzz McCoy, Mimi Star, Arena Rock, Bradley Bills) they decided to concentrate on their earlier albums, including their debut I See Good Spirits and I See Bad Spirits and Confessions of a Knife... As expected with these reunion shows, there were plenty of hardcore older (ages 30-50) fans in the audience. Many of them bringing their high school friends and making it a reunion for the audience, as well as the band.”

Adult. (note period) to open. We love Adult., saw them in May 2022 and stated, “Finally, Adult. (Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller) closed the show out. Their fanbase are diehard fans, many of them have seen the Detroit band numerous times.”

Canadian band Men I Trust is returning to the area, at the Fillmore in Minneapolis on October 21st. The band’s last album Untourable Album came out in 2021.

We caught Men I Trust in 23 July 2019 and said, “Montreal-based trio Men I Trust (Emma Proulx, Jessy Caron, and Dragos Chiriac) opened up the show with “Tailwhip”. Singer Emma Proulx mentioned that they’ve opened up for Belle & Sebastian before, and was more than happy to play with them again at the Minnesota Zoo. Stevie Jackson (from B&S) would later say that it was Men I Trust’s last show with the group and they were sad to see them go…. But don’t feel so bad for them, as they’re landing in South Korea in a few days to play the Holiday Land Festival.”

We caught This is the Kit in Oct 2017 and said, “On this tour, This Is the Kit (Kate Stables) is joined by bassist Jesse Vernon and drummer Jamie Whitby-Coles. She started off with a solo song ‘Easy on the Thieves’, then as a trio, then back to solo with ‘All Written out in Numbers’. Stables often tuned between songs, making for awkward unfinished stories and comments. She played acoustic guitar, but it seemed like she’s most comfortable when she’s plucking on her banjo. Highlight of her set was Sad Sax of Sh** (the Bon Iver horns section led by Nelson Devereaux), joining This is the Kit for most of their set. According to Stables, they met in June 2017 and immediately hit it off. The added saxophones gave This is the Kit’s songs a fresh, upbeat sound.”

Lovely to see former Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys will open the show.

Two-time GRAMMY award-winning band Old Crow Medicine Show will be headlining the Palace Theatre in St Paul on October 21st. The band’s new album Jubilee is out now on ATO Records.

Their single, “One Drop”, features Mavis Staples, and described as a “gospel-inspired romp” that closed out the new album.

Talking about the single, bandleader Ketch Secor explains: “For years Old Crow has always had a song or two on an album striving to sum up the need for a spiritual awakening, a rededication to ideals, and a sing-a-long tune for the campfire’s last dying ember. This is the latest in our canon of ‘songs of a spiritual persuasion,’ and, I think, one of our best, due in no small part to the presence of a legend of gospel music and more, the great Mavis Staples. Mavis epitomizes a life in roots music and Old Crow can only hope that the next 25 years will bring us, like she is, closer to the true vine.”

Southern California’s music festival Desert Daze is celebrating their tenth anniversary this September 30 to October 2, 2022, in Lake Perris, California. Festival weekend passes, parking and camping passes is available to purchase now. For the first time this year, Desert Daze has also partnered with FUSE to help concertgoers put together hotel packages in a variety of budgets.

We’ve been covering the festival since 2017, describing the festival as “And just like that, it was over just as quickly as it had begun. I left feeling elated and exhausted, and as I made my way back to the day parking lot, I smiled in satisfaction knowing that the soles of my boots were caked with the magical moon dust of the desert.”

The lineup is available now, and already everybody is talking about how this is headliner Iggy Pop’s only U.S. show this year. We saw Pop at Desert Daze 2017 and wrote, “Iggy Pop, 60’s The Stooges frontman and who some would call the Godfather of Punk, came out in all his shirtless glory and opened up with (I mean of course) I Wanna Be Your Dog, spitting bottled water and flipping off the crowd and cameras. He was bold and delightful in his punk charm, right into Gimme Danger and The Passenger, then more Stooges’ classics like 1969. It’s sincerely hard to believe this man is in his 70’s. He had more energy than most of the bands combined, and I felt happy that I got to see him in that setting before…I mean who even knows anymore what can happen to these legends. Somewhere somebody must have kicked Iggy around some…and he’s kicking back.”

Los Angeles-based, Australian-born trio Chase Atlantic is back on tour. The group recently reached out to Maggie Lindemann on TikTok, and they put together the new hit single “Ohmami”.

“Working with Maggie Lindemann was a pleasant surprise that transpired through social media; it was a new and exciting approach for us in terms of modern collaboration,” shares the band. “From the moment we started creating ‘OHMAMI’ we believed that a female vocal would complement the track significantly. Scottish band Belle & Sebastian graced the Weesner Family Amphitheater at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley on Tuesday, July 23rd.

Prior to live music, DJ Jake Rudh (from Transmission) played a mix of 60s/70s-ish pop songs for fans. Some songs on the playlist includes Lulu’s “To Sir With Love”, Twinkle’s “Golden Lights” (mixed with The Smiths?) and Van McCoy & the Soul City Symphony’s “The Hustle”.

Montreal-based trio Men I Trust (Emma Proulx, Jessy Caron, and Dragos Chiriac) opened up the show with “Tailwhip”. Singer Emma Proulx mentioned that they’ve opened up for Belle & Sebastian before, and was more than happy to play with them again at the Minnesota Zoo.

Stevie Jackson (from B&S) would later say that it was Men I Trust’s last show with the group and they were sad to see them go…. But don’t feel so bad for them, as they’re landing in South Korea in a few days to play the Holiday Land Festival.

The trio had an easy electronic-pop/indiepop sound to them and expect to hear more from them once their upcoming Oncle Jazz album (with 24 tracks!) comes out in September 2019. Maybe they’ll do a promotional tour around that time (which is actually perfect for SXSW).

Glasgow’s Belle & Sebastian came on the stage shortly. The band currently features singer/guitarist/keys Stuart Murdoch, singer/guitarist Stevie Jackson, singer/violin/flutist Sarah Martin, keys Chris Geddes, drummer Richard Colburn, bassist/guitarist Bobby Kildea, and additional guitarist/bassist Dave McGowan. The group is so large, that they’ve actually lost their drummer (left him at a Walmart) on their way to Palace Theatre in St Paul in August 2017.

As you know, I’ve seen B&S at every appearance in the Twin Cities, going back to Oct 2003, and the band just gets better and better. With the Minnesota Zoo’s on their mind, they started their set with “Dog on Wheels” (their very first single). The animal-thing is actually pretty cool, even though we previously seen them at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney in 2015.

More animal-banters as Stuart mentioned how the lions came out and Sarah jokingly re-naming “Stay Loose” as “Stay Moose” (there were images of a moose on their backdrop as they played that song)… and Stuart adding “I couldn’t care what’s on FOX news”. Songs from the animal-named Tigermilk, “She’s Losing It”. It was a good choice, but on the setlist, the alternate options were “Belle & Sebastian” and “Seeing Other People” (the later would have been my song choice).

Every song was greeted with happy cheers from the audience. This is possibly based on fan’s request, who heavily influenced the setlist, at least that’s the impression I got from hearing Stuart describing about directly talking to their fans. Of course, that didn’t stop some people from shouting out their favorites (one being “Funny Little Frog”, which they did eventually honor on the encore).

After “Family Tree” a fan asked for “It Could Have Been a Brilliant Career” and although Stevie started to hum and attempted to play, they had to stop and say, “Maybe next time”. They just weren’t prepared for it.

It’s standard now, but, of course, when “The Boy With the Arab Strap” was played, the band invited their dedicated fans to come on stage and dance with them… making for a very satisfying show stopper. Fans were invited to stay on for the following song “I Didn't See It Coming”.

The clear highlight for everyone at the Minnesota Zoo show has got to be their amazing impromptu cover of AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long”. Apparently, Stuart spotted someone in the audience with the Australian band’s T-Shirt and had Bobby Kildea just play a bit of the song… before you know it, the entire band is playing in sync. This song isn’t normally played, but hearing and watching them, it’s clear they’ve practiced before. I found out later that the band did play at their Sheffield show a few weeks ago, and the Minnesota Zoo was only their second time playing the song ever. It was so good, I hope they include this song on their set going forward.

That’s not all. For the faithful who stayed for the encore, we were rewarded with the rarely heard live rendition of “This Is Just a Modern Rock Song”. The studio track is over seven minutes long (longer than “Your Cover’s Blown”), so it made sense that the band won’t really play the song in concert. To bring us the song, Stuart mentioned that he’ll shorten the song… and at first you think they’ll just play a minute or two, but they actually went on pretty long. The abridged version leaves out the personal ending (“Stevie's full of good intentions/Richards into rock 'n' roll/Stuart's staying in and he thinks it's a sin that he has to leave the house at all”), but closing as it should be with “I count "three, four" and then we start to slow, because a song has got to stop somewhere”.

Although the band’s latest release is the compilation How to Solve Our Human Problems, they actually didn’t play too many songs from this new record. Instead, this current tour seems to something of a rarity and greatest hits collection live… and it’s actually my favorite show from them (having seen them six times now). They just keep getting better.

With all my cards on the table, I have to let you know that Scottish band Belle & Sebastian is one of my favorite bands. Yes, I own all their records, own all their singles, and have seen the band every time they play in Minnesota (which you can count on one hand: 4 times).

I’m very excited to let you know that B&S is back in the area, they’ll be playing the Weesner Family Amphitheater at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley. That’s a bit of a drive (for me), but they’re worth it.

Let’s hope the band will play older/classic B&S songs, considering that their last release were three singles, collected into one How to Solve Our Human Problems compilation album (available on Matador Records). I have read that they’re recording a new album called Days of the Bagnold Summer, but I don’t think the band will be playing forthcoming songs.

Special guests Men I Trust will open. The all-girls band was previously in town with Wild Nothing in November 2018.

For the Minnesota show, it’s listed that Transmission’s DJ Jake Rudh will play music pre-show.

Parquet Courts will be headlining First Avenue (a one-off date extending from Pitchfork Festival?) this Thursday, July 18th.

Cate Le Bon, who is touring in support of her new Reward album (available on Mexican Summer) will open the show. We last saw Le Bon in May 2016 and mentioned, “It was an incredibly healthy turn out for the Los Angeles, by the way of Wales, Cate Le Bon. Words must have spread since her last appearance in Minneapolis, in January 2014... despite the fact that Cate Le Bon physically could not say the words ‘Minneapolis’. Le Bon, in her thick Welsh accent said, “Wish ah could sae your city’s name. Ah just carn’t say it.””

Local Minneapolis Night Moves will be headlining First Avenue on July 20th, a send-off start of their tour for their new album Can You Really Find Me.

We saw Night Moves in January 2014 and wrote, “ Local band Night Moves, ably taking over the opening spot from the previously announced Night Beds, was literally feeling the Blues. For the duration of their 40 min set, the band members (guitarist/vocalist John Pelant, bassist Micky Alfano, and multi-instrumentalist Mark Ritsema , with drummer Jared Isabella) were literally bathed in muted blue stage lights, which was mood evocative of their easy-going, slightly psychedelic 70s album rock-vibed sound.”

Wild Nothing is back with their new album Indigo (Captured Tracks). The group will headline the Cedar Cultural Center on November 7th.

We saw the band in May 2016 and said, “Wild Nothing is the brainchild of Jack Tatum (Jack & the Whale/ Facepaint). Tatum is the founding member, songwriter and the sole performer on Wild Nothing's albums but he brings a group with him on the road. This adds a strange dynamic to the group because each member seems to interpret the songs differently which makes the music much deeper than you would think a group like this would be.”

Men I Trust to open. This all-girls group from Montreal, Canada, features Jessy on bass/guitar, Dragos on keyboards and Emma vocals/guitar.
