Los Campesinos is back in the USA! The last time we saw this six/seven piece band was in 2010, so it’s actually pretty rare to see this Welsh band. They’ll be trying to fit on stage at the Triple Rock Social Club this Wednesday.
…
Cardiff’s Los Campesinos! returned to Minneapolis at the sold-out show at the Triple Rock Social Club on Wednesday, March 1st.
Crying
New York’s Crying opened up the show. The indie lowfi / electropop band features Elaiza Santos on vocals, Ryan Galloway on guitars, and Kynwyn Sterling on drums (replacing original drummer Nick Corbo).
Songs on their set included songs from their new album Children of the Wind and a few from their debut Get Olde Second Wind record.
The trio seemed to have either a cult following or that the audience was immediately converted to #1 fans by the end of the night. Those fans in the front started shouting “one more song!” chants after Crying left the stage.
Los Campesinos!
We didn’t catch Los Campesinos! the last time they were in town, on account that it was in the winter (29 January 2012 at the Varsity Theater), and somewhat regretted it. That is because for the next five years, the band skipped America for their next few albums (A Good Night for a Fist Fight and No Blues) for whatever reason. I suspect it was because it was just very hard to organize schedules for all six members (and on top of that they added a seventh member, Matt, in June 2016!)
It’s been a long time, but it’s good to have the Welsh band back in town. Judging by the sold-out status of the show, that hardcore fans have not forgotten the much-beloved indiepop / twee band (although the band tried very hard to shake that stereotype in their music by diversifying their sound).
Setlist
With a new album recently released called Sick Scenes on Wichita Recordings, the seven-piece band did their obligation to play a few songs from it (including ‘I Broke Up in Amarante’, ‘5 Flucloxacillin’ and ‘A Slow, Slow Death’). Because they’ve been absent for so long, they’ve also decided to play a few tracks from the last two albums, as they’ve never been played live in America before.
The band seemed really tight, never missing a beat, and it just tells me that even though they haven’t played here in five years, they never really stopped rehearsing.
Los Campesinos!’s Sick Scenes is available now.

Wow, it's been four years since we last heard from Los Campesinos!, at least in the USA. Since 2010, the band released two full lengths, Hello Sadness (2011) and No Blues (2013).

Indie pop brother trio, AJR (Adam, Ryan, and Jack), will be joining this “Hell No” tour. AJR is certain ‘ready’, after their smash hit ‘I’m Ready’ hitting US Certified Platinum.

03/02/17 Death By Unga Bunga is headlining 7th Street Entry. I haven’t confirmed it, but I believe their name a punchline to a bad joke. Do you choose death or Unga Bunga?

They were supposed to actually play the venue in October 2016, but they had to cancel and reschedule the show to Friday, March 3rd.
Plenty has changed for Los Campesinos! since 2007, when they gleefully proclaimed that the “international tweexcore underground saved us all.†They’re a little more hardcore, but there’s still enough twee

Did you know about Bing Crosby and Davie Bowie's "Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy" song? The two had met on Crosby's Christmas special in 1975 to perform this song. Shortly after the record was cut in 1977, Crosby died

There is no one closely associated with the Holiday Christmas spirit than Bing Crosby.... who could forget his rendition of "White Christmas" or his duet with the The Thin White Duke David Bowie?
If you live in the USA, be sure to tune in on the encore rebroadcasting of American Masters: Bing Crosby Rediscovered this December 26th at 9pm on PBS (check local listings).
The show originally aired November 25th, and if I read it right, the DVD is available now, December 2nd, via PBS Distribution. On top of that, the Soundtrack CD is available via Bing Crosby Archive and Universal Music Enterprise.... which you can hear 24 hours a day on bingcrosby.com.
Also worth noting that 2014 marks the 60th anniversary of the film White Christmas, which the Diamond Anniversary Edition Blu-Ray & DVD available now via Paramount. The 1954 American musical film featured the famous titled track "White Christmas", as only Crosby can deliver.

I knew that going in, that I wouldn't be able to cover this Los Campesinos! and Cymbals Eat Guitars as much as I would like to as I had another show to cover last night, May 1st. As usual, First Avenue shows on Saturday are usually "all ages" shows because of some dance (Salsa night? *see comment) event that starts at 10:30, so this show started very early.
Cymbals Eat Guitars warmed up the audience, who were still shuffling in. I have always intended to check out this band in detail since Village Voice called the band "Best New Brooklyn Band" of 2009. Since then, they've been held in high regards with Pitchfork, ABC and Day Trotter.
If you want a free track, the b-side "Tunguska" is available for free if you provide your email address (see embedded widget). The song starts off acoustic and soft, but it does build up. It's good for just a b-side. If you decide to buy the 7", it comes with a slap-bracelet! Go ahead and re-live your childhood.
Cymbals Eat Guitars
Anyway, the buildup in intensity song styles seems to fit Cymbals Eat Guitars' M.O., as the songs that they did play live follow that formula. I believe most of their songs that were played live are from their debut album, Why There Are Mountains, released last year from Sister's Den Records.
As for Los Campesinos! they are a very, very large band. Two girls and six dudes from Wales. I'll have to mention that I love their accents and for their encore, the singer and guitarist made their way into the audience and performed their final song. Quite fun, as the rest of the band.
I'm happy to see that the band are continuing their tour since the volcanic ashes caused them to cancel a few dates at the beginning. Los Campesinos! are currently on tour for their third album, Romance Is Boring, which was released earlier this year under the Wichita Recordings label.
