Seattle’s all-girls band La Luz (which means ‘the light’) sold out the Turf Club, in St Paul, on Saturday night, September 28, 2024.

Chicago-based musician Mia Joy opened the show, stating that this was their first time playing in the area. The band played several tracks from their latest Celestial Mirror. Looking at their written setlist, it’s actually not correct. For example, the song “Stranger” was not written on the set, and was described as a brand-new and unreleased song that they were testing out. Also, “Haha” was played much later in the set. Perhaps the changes were made last-minute, but whatever they put on stage was not correct.

Their music is best described as shoegazing, in the ethereal type, not shoegazing as in guitar-driven. If this was their first time here, we’re looking forward to having them return.

La Luz at Amsterdam Bar & Hall (11 Mar 2022) (Cancelled)

La Luz’s frontwoman Shana Cleveland was incredibly pleased that the show had sold out, especially because she didn’t think anyone would show up for their show. Their previous show, at the Amsterdam Bar in March 2022 was cancelled, due to post-recovery from the pandemic.

Now, fresh with a new album, News of The Universe, their first on Sub Pop, the “surf noir” is back, stronger than ever.

Prior to “Close Your Eyes”, the band came walking on stage, hiding behind a giant sun. The first few songs on their set really demonstrated their great harmonies and layering effects.

The band really loves the Turf Club, giving shout outs to the friendly staff and even their restaurant portion, “the Clown Lounge. Didn’t know I needed it…” and the first time the band played the Turf Club, it was ten years ago, opening for Ty Segall. Cleveland had never body surf before, so it was her first time at the Turf Club. She was scared and nervous, but looking over and seeing Ty giving the thumbs up, it was all right.

All the songs on the set were original La Luz songs, except for The Zombies cover, “Time of the Season”, which sounded very faithful on stage.

Hopefully, now with a bigger fanbase (selling out and all), that the group will be back in the Twin Cities area soon.

We caught Mike Doughty (the singer of Soul Coughing) in March 2019 and said, “It’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years since Soul Coughing released Ruby Vroom. Based on hearing the audience singing along and knowing the album front to back, the album is beloved and hearing the entire album played live is a sight to behold... especially experiencing it with fan’s feedback. You can always tell which songs there the favorites, even for the more obscure tracks.”

husband and wife duo Shovels & Rope (Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent) will be performing live at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall in St. Paul on September 24th, 2024. The duo’s album Something Is Working Up Above My Head will be out September 6th on Dualtone Records.

We saw the band in May 2023 and wrote, “Shovels and Rope opened the evening, playing an hour, thirteen song set. A married duo of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, they are on the road supporting their 2022 album, Manticore, which is Tarot Card showing the head of a man, the body of a lion and the tail of a scorpion. Or as Trent explained to Rolling Stone: “… naming records is kind of stupid, so why not call our midtempo masterpiece something hardcore.” The duo started off with Trent on electric guitar and Hearst on drums and a small synthesizer, but they soon switched places with “Devil”, which gave Hearst the opportunity to channel her inner Dolly Parton.”

Dashboard Confessional is currently on tour, stopping by the Uptown Theater. The band recently teamed up with their tour mate Boys Like Girls for their new single “Watch the Fire.”

Dashboard Confessional’s frontman Chris Carrabba shared, “Martin [Johnson of Boys Like Girls] and I had bonded over some horrific accidents we’d had and about the recoveries that we had both worked our way through. One of the things you carry heavily when your body is laid up and your spirit is heavy is, inevitably, the past. One thing Martin and I share between us was a desire to put the past down for a while. Maybe for good. I hope so. I guess I do know one sure way of putting the past down, for a little while anyway: pick up a guitar. Reckoning with your past can be painful and ugly. It can also be rejuvenative and beautiful. I don’t know whether you get to decide. I just know that it’s worth it.”

Wage War at Amsterdam Bar (15 March 2016)

We previously saw Wage War in Mar 2016 and said, “The crowd was full of energy for majority of the night. I loved watching them while Wage War played. Wage War is a band that I saw back in December when they opened for Every Time I Die. They were amazing that night but, sadly, did not get the attention from the crowd that they deserved. I honestly don't know if majority of the crowd back in December even noticed there was a band on stage. It was great to see the crowd giving them all of the attention they deserved. Kids were singing along and moshing and dancing. It was wild to see how quickly Wage War had gained all of these followers and they are more than deserving of it. People think it's stupid that I will go see the same band a bunch of times but this is a perfect example as to why I do that. The amount of satisfaction I have in seeing such a deserving band finally make it "big" with my friends is one of the best feelings on the planet.”

Man, you know we love Moon Hooch, ever since we saw them in 2013. The band was famously “discovered” by They Might Be Giants and personally asked them to open for them their 2013 tour.

We finally caught them as headliner in Oct 2016, and wrote, “You already know the secret origin of Moon Hooch. The band was busking in the street of New York City Subway stations and caught the attention of They Might Be Giants, who asked them to go on national tour with them…. As previously mentioned, the dance floor was packed, especially for a Sunday night. The fans in front absolutely loved the funk and danced and raved throughout the night.”

We saw Cloud Cult in April 2013 and said, “From what I've experience, the songs sounded great live, particularly when you can hear the violin and cello's sweeping sound. The other songs seem like they were written for a large crowd, you know, designed for singalongs/shoutalongs fun times. Unlike most bands, Cloud Cult have two dedicated painters. You can watch their work progress as the show goes on. The two painters does occasionally do backup vocals or help out with drumming or tambourine, so they are as much a part of the show as any of the musicians on stage.”

Minnesota’s own Cloud Cult will be doing a two-night residency at the Palace Theatre on September 27 and September 28. The band’s new album, Alchemy Creek, is out now.

We saw Cloud Cult in April 2013 and said, “From what I've experience, the songs sounded great live, particularly when you can hear the violin and cello's sweeping sound. The other songs seem like they were written for a large crowd, you know, designed for singalongs/shoutalongs fun times. Unlike most bands, Cloud Cult have two dedicated painters. You can watch their work progress as the show goes on. The two painters does occasionally do backup vocals or help out with drumming or tambourine, so they are as much a part of the show as any of the musicians on stage.”

Mozart’s Sister (Montreal-based musician and producer Caila Thompson-Hannant) just recently wrapped up their tour with Diana. Mozart’s Sister’s sophomore album Field of Love will be out February 17th on Arbutus Records.

Field of Love began life in 2015, and was inspired by Cailia’s childhood love of ‘90s dance pop: “I wrote Field of Love at a point when I truly did feel I was floating in a field of love. Once I got going the songwriting process happened very easily. As the songs came I realized: oh I really like these. There was a naivety to them and I felt like I could really cut loose when writing”.

She also recently announced her first set of shows for 2017 with Teen Daze.

Brooklyn-based prog-punk band Sister Helen started their year off with the release of their latest single ‘The Blending of Blue and Green’.... despite breaking up as a band in 2017. Their self-titled farewell album comes out January 13th, 2017, and their last ever show is taking place tomorrow (January 9th) at Shea Stadium in Brooklyn, New York.

Eva Lawitts (bass/vox) describes the album as “a concept album about friendship and helplessness. There’s no specific narrative, but every song examines the underlying themes from a different angle. There are two perspectives, that of the ‘Friend’ (who pleads throughout the album ‘please help me’) and that of the ‘Finest Mind’ (who cries back ‘I’m so sorry I can’t help you’). These two characters sing to and about each other, trying to make sense of their relationship but are simultaneously being ruled by overwhelming doubt, narcissism and impotence.”

The Wizard Of Oz-inspired video called ‘Tin Man’ from Irish electro-folk group Saint Sister recently came out on vinyl via Communion Singles Club (for the month of December). The actual song was inspired by John Donne’s poem The Sun Rising.

Saint Sister formed in 2014 by Morgan MacIntyre and Gemma Doherty. The duo released their debut Madrid EP last year, and received radio support from Phil Taggart and Huw Stephens (Radio 1), as well as all the blogs, including Clash and The Line Of Best Fit.

Following two sold out headline shows in Dublin, expect the girls to do more live shows this year. The ‘Tin Man’ 7” is out now on Communion’s Singles Club.

Did you know that La Luz’s Lena Simon is the sister of Sarah Simon from Magic Magic Roses? Sarah, along with Kate Sweeney formed Magic Magic Roses in 2008 and released The Living Room in 2010. Sam Berman joined the band in 2011.

Recently Magic Magic Roses released a track called ‘Dusk’, the title track from their third album on Seattle's Plume Records.

The San Francisco band wrote, “Many millions of thank you's to everyone who helped us get this done. Everyone who donated and pre-ordered...you are incredible and we love you! New York Times called Cass McCombs “one of the greatest songwriters of our time”, recently released his eight studio album Mangy Love. His new single and music video is taken from the album and is called ‘Run Sister Run’. ‘Run Sister Run’ was directed by Rachael Pony Cassells and made in collaboration with young Indigenous leader, activist and athlete Tracie Léost and her family.

You may recall that we caught Shana Cleveland when she was on her solo tour at Bryant Lake Bowl Theater in June 2015.

Cleveland and her all girls band La Luz will be back in town at the 7th Street Entry on Monday, September 7th... touring in support of their latest Weirdo Shrine (Hardly Art).

The new second album came out August 7th, and its goal was to capture the band's restless live energy and commit it to tape, with the help of producer/engineer Ty Segall.

Opening up for them will be Strange Relations.

The Dream Boys are back! After a seven year hiatus, Jesse “Boots Electric” Hughes and Josh “Baby Duck” Homme are cranking the volume to 11, slipping into their tightest denim and ready to rock the masses with a brand new Eagles of Death Metal release, Zipper Down. The album, to be released October 2nd on Downtown Recordings, should be another crazy-fun offering of cheeky boogie-woogie-inspired rock from the guys but I spy a few surprises: a Duran Duran cover, “Save a Prayer,” and a Hughes tune, “Oh Girl,” originally on his excellent solo album 2011’s Honkey Kong. Homme doesn’t often tour with the Eagles on account of commitments to his other band (maybe you know them? Queens of the Stone Age?), but Hughes more than makes up for his absence. There’s a reason Hughes’ nickname is “Boots Electric” as this guy is such a wild and energetic performer - his idol is Little Richard and it shows!

Show up to the gig early to catch another high desert delight: Jesika von Rabbit! Von Rabbit is, as Coachella Weekly described, “part pop princess parody, part desert gypsy” and armed with the voice of a gothed-up Wanda Jackson. After playing for over a decade with electro-pop Gram Rabbit, an LA-based band she formed with guitarist/sampler Todd Rutherford, drummer Jason Gilbert and guitarist/producer Ethan Allen (the name is a play on von Rabbit’s name and that of 60s cosmic-country legend Gram Parsons), she’s treating fans to her first solo album, Journey Mitchell, released on Royal Order records.

Put on your boogie shoes and hit the Varsity on September 9th for a real good time, folks.

Winner of Album of the Year for Shake, Shook, Shaken! at this year's Victoires de la Musique (the French's version of the Grammy's), Franco-Finnish The Dø will be stopping by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on June 1st. This is the duo's first US tour, so you bet we will be there to show support. This will be your only chance to see the duo (Olivia Merilahti and Dan Levy) at such a small, intimate venue, as the band have sold out plenty of European and Australian dates.

Local act Cool Pollution (aka Ilya Garelik) set to open the Minneapolis show.

Shana Cleveland, singer of La Luz is exploring her quieter/acoustic side with her latest project Shana Cleveland & The Sandcastles. The Seattle-based singer is currently on tour for her upcoming Oh Man, Cover the Ground, set for release May 26 via Suicide Squeeze Records.

Suicide Squeeze Records said that the first 150 pre-order customers will receive a free poster. Fans of vinyl should note that there is a limited pressing of 1,000 copies on custom Lake Blue color vinyl (with a bonus digital download card). Cassette fanatics will need to check out Hairdo Records for the cassette version.

Minneapolis by the way of Madison Battlerat (led by multi-instrumentalist Celeste Heule) will open the Minneapolis show.

Look, we like Meiko, okay? She has a new yet-untitled album coming out next month via PledgeMusic, and it looks like she's heading out on tour in support of said-album.

I have seen Meiko a few times, once at SXSW 2009 and semi-recently at 7th Street Entry in 2012.

For this upcoming Fall/Winter 2014 tour, she will feature the same opener, Buddy, from the last tour. Buddy has a new album called Last Call For The Quiet Life, which came out August 19 via Stove Punchin' Records.

Also, please note that the show will take place at the Loring Pasta Bar (right next to the Varsity) and the show starts late (9pm) and is 18+ only. If I know anything about Meiko, it is that she used to waitress, and she'll definitely be reminding you that you need to tip your waiters/waitress at least 20%.

Everyone’s favorite cowboy Jesse Woods from Austin, TX is in Los Angeles this week playing some fantastic shows all over town. Last night, he graced the Bootleg Theater in Echo Park along with La Luz and Pure Bathing Culture. Jesse was accompanied by a band, which he later told me was a new addition to his sets. This is my third time seeing Jesse and the band only made his performance even more cinematic and dreamy. Adding in the low-lit grungy vibe of Bootleg, the setting was perfect for a magical night with heartfelt tunes.

Rootin’ tootin’ singer/songwriter/carpenter (of sorts... he built the studio he recorded his last album in) Jesse came out in his cowboy hat ready to roll. He opened with ‘Walk Along Cattle Drives’, the first track on his recently released full-length album Get Your Burdens Lifted. That’s exactly what Jesse accomplishes in his sets- there’s a calming, sentimental way about his performance that makes you feel like stretching out on the grass and staring at the moon, that all of your problems have dissipated for a few moments and you have an overall sense of peace. His melodic and captivating vocals carry the room in an effortless way as he belts out his unfeigned lyrics, “Right before the sunrise, right before the moon dies, dreams are turnin’ inside out...dreams are turnin’ inside out.”

Halfway through the set Jesse played my favorite track on the album ‘Danger in the Dancehall’. If there ever was a song to fall in love to, this one just might be it. It pulls at your heart strings, with lyrics “I hear the angels loud and clear...I’m lost forever...won’t ever find a single tear, coming from my eyes”. His guitar picking is bright and crystal clear, with enchanting solos to boot. His honesty and soul-baring efforts onstage are felt tremendously by his adoring fans. He seamlessly lifted the sleepy mood with ‘Lazerburn’, which has a Johnny Cash kind of rhythm to it, like the thought of line dancing could be a possibility. Again, his band makes for a much more lively set, for the audience and it looks like for Jesse himself. He ended the set with a beautiful solo performance, and thanked the crowd with a handsome smile and a friendly

“Goodnight, ya’ll”.

La Luz

Next to take the stage was the adorable all-girl band La Luz from Seattle. My god, there is something impossibly refreshing about chicks jamming on instruments, especially when they’re all talented and wonderfully experimental. La Luz has a 60’s mod vibe, with slow electric drones that borderline spiritual/ambient rock. It’s sure to soothe you- everyone in this band sings and their harmonies are delicate and sultry. The audience stood open-mouth gazing and utterly mesmerized as lead singer Shane wailed on her guitar... and I haven’t seen a girl shred solos like this since St. Vincent. They performed most of the tracks off their new album ‘It’s Alive’, doing little choreographed jigs during most numbers. Shane is absolutely hilarious when conversing with her audience, making jokes about the ping-pong table with her stoner-like giggles. This band is a true delight and should acquire even more of a following as they continue to play live.

Pure Bathing Culture

Lastly, on a particularly whimsical note, Portland’s own Pure Bathing Culture closed out the night. With Sarah Versprille’s souring, angelic vocals and Daniel Hindman’s incandescent guitar solos, this powerfully divine foursome sets the tone for a truly ethereal concert experience. I’m not sure how she does it, but Sarah makes a mullet look completely modern AND rad. Her killer voice transcended above the audience, painting a picture of two star-crossed lovers driving away together into the moonlight. My favorite track off their album Moon Tides, ‘Pendulum’, lit up the venue in such a way I for one felt like I was floating. It also always amazes me how foot petals can amplify and skyrocket the sound from a guitar, and it looks like Pure Bathing Culture has effectively mastered this technique. On tour with La Luz this winter, I highly, highly recommend that you see these guys for yourself.
