Jessica Pratt, with a full band, recently stopped by the Fine Line, in Minneapolis, touring in support of her fourth album, Here in the Pitch, available now on Mexican Summer.

I’m not going to lie; this was one of the worst concerts going experience. I’ve complained about the Fine Line in the past, the sight line is not good if you are in the back of the venue. The venue itself is a long rectangle, with a stage that is maybe raised two feet. The view is great if you’re in the front, or if you paid extra for balcony seats, but once the venue is full, it’s hard to see the band.

It’s impossible to see the band, if they are sitting down. I don’t have a problem with artists sitting down, but if it’s nearly impossible to see the artist, then the venue should provide seats for the audience to sit as well or provide a very high seat or stool for the artist. Some venues provide viewing monitors for those in the back… but not the Fine Line.

Basically, what ended up happening is that everyone in the back of the venue was just listening to the show. Sure, it sounds great when Pratt sings, and the songs are wonderful little stories. The other problem is that the first fifteen minutes were indecisive with tuning and lots of dead air (since we couldn’t see what was going on). It felt like it was a long sound check.

If you were really tall or in the front, you probably really enjoyed the Jessica Pratt show. It was probably top ten performance of the year… like when we saw Pratt in Oct 2019: “Jessica Pratt came out decked in a black suit wearing dark shades, her blonde hair shaggy around her face as she clutched her acoustic guitar. I had never heard her music before this festival, and after giving her latest album Quiet Signs a solid listen I was beyond thrilled to find this lady. She’s a 70’s folk dream, a lullaby and a haunting figure as she strummed her guitar and mesmerized the crowd with her breathy tunes. Accompanied by Matthew McDermott on piano, the set was slow and soft, a nice sigh of air as festival goers sipped on their coconut waters and beers.”

We did see opener June McDoom since both McDoom and her guitarist Evan Wright, standing tall on stage. McDoom mentioned that she was actually normally nervous, but for the Fine Line appearance, for some reasons, she had butterflies that night, as she prepared to play “Emerald River Dance.”

McDoom and Pratt made a good pairing, hopefully there will be crossover fans.

Can you believe that Redd Kross is back? And with a new eponymous double-album, set for a June 28, 2024, via In the Red Records. This group started in 1979 between a 15 year old named Jeff McDonald and his 11 year old brother Steven. As I previously mentioned, when I was a DJ at KFSR 90.7 FM, we used to play their music in the early 90s… so these guys are old (in the best way).

We recently saw Redd Kross at Mosswood Meltdown on July 6, 2024 and wrote, “I’ve always loved the fuzzy rock ‘n roll fantasies of Redd Kross. An L.A. band with a New York heart, they’re all about heavy guitar distortion overlaid with supremely catchy hooks. A bit glam, a bit punk, all fun. Even with the sound problems that riddled their set, I couldn’t not bop my head to “Jimmy’s Fantasy,” with its loud-quiet-loudness and singalong vibe: “Cast the hex with your echo-plex/ You don’t ever wanna have… sex.” No wonder with the rock they bring, that Thurston Moore called them one of the most important bands of the last 30-40 years.”

Minnesota Yacht Club Festival

We’ve previously mentioned the inaugural Minnesota Yacht Club Festival in January, but at that time, nothing was really known about it.

Now that we’ve gotten closer to the date, they’ve announced the full lineup. The two major headliners are Alanis Morissette for Friday and Red Hot Chili Peppers for Saturday’s show. It also looks like there’ll be two stages per day. The reasons for this is because the music can keep going (it might take up to 30 minutes to setup the stage for the next band). Unfortunately, if you want to get a good spot, you might have to pick one stage and camp out there, instead of running back and forth between the two stages.

Anyway, if you show up early, these are the bands that we love and have seen in the past.

We first saw Nico Vega in Oct 2007 and wrote, “So I went to see a few bands played last night. Two were from Sweden, but the best (performance-wise), I thought was Nico Vega, from Los Angeles, California. They're a three-piece band that sounds kind of like a thrash/rap/hard rock band, but what really impressed me was Aja's bold leotard outfit. You can't tell from the photo, but she's also barefoot.”

Oklahoma band Wilderado is touring in support of their new LP Talker via Bright Antenna Records. The album comes out September 20, 2024.

Wilderado (20 June 2023)

We caught the band in June 2023 and said, “From Tulsa, Oklahoma, the band is comprised of Max Rainer and Tyler Wimpee on vocals and guitar, Justin Kila on drums and David Arthur Timson on bass. Rainer and Wimpee formed the group in 2015 when they met in college and decided to start writing songs by their fifth year when they noticed all their friends had moved on. Their music resides in that aura of transition. Rainer told the Atwood Magazine that it took them five years as a group to all get on the same page. And right now they seemed to have found the right gear with Billboard Magazine describing their sound like a fine whiskey: “Wilderado just goes down easy.””

The Head And The Heart (06 June 2023)

The Head And The Heart is playing on Friday night. We recently saw them in Jun 2023 and wrote, “We’ve been longtime fans of the band, seeing them on their initial national tour (and an accompanying in-store live set at Electric Fetus in Minneapolis) and several times since, most recently last October in Minnesota. Hopes were dashed that original co-vocalist Josiah Johnson might feel ready enough to join the band on stage for a few dates, including the previous night at Colorado’s Red Rocks, but the band carried on as they always have, impressing veteran followers and making many new ones.”

We saw Crumb in Oct 2022 and noted, “The group Crumb from New York was a super rad show to see as the sun started to finally give relief over the campgrounds. I believe they mostly played songs from their album Jinx, the song M.R. seeming to be the biggest hit in the crowd. Lila Ramani is hypnotic and a definite stunner, and their music is melodic and super synth-heavy thanks to Brian Aronow. These guys definitely seem to be on the rise and they had just ended a several month tour prior to the festival.”

Popular rock band Thirty Seconds To Mars is headlining the Ledge Amphitheater in Waite Park (near St Cloud)… it looks like it’s going to be the closest city to Minneapolis on their tour.

Show up early to check out alt-pop sensation Jagwar Twin. His upcoming single “tomorrow [ANGLE OF ETERNITY]” (with lovelytheband) and his current single “Bad Feeling (Oompa Loompa)” which has over 200 million streams and spent 12 weeks at Top 40 radio.

As you recall, we saw Jagwar Twin in April 2023 and was really impressed with his vocals: “Opening the show was Jagwar Twin (Roy English). Joining English on stage was his drummer, Luke V on guitars, and a video person (who was perhaps live broadcasting the entire show). They had a fog machine that was constantly running and they seemed excited to play tracks from 33 (Big Loud Rock). From what I’ve heard, they sounded really good. Great vocals. It’s amped up, but you can tell that English can really, really sing. Songs like “Loser” had “L” hand signs, while “I Like to Party” was pure dancing/going wild.”

We first saw Hana Vu in Sep 2018, on her very first tour: “After spending 30 hours driving in a car, Hana Vu was happy and relieved to finally play for us. Although Vu had written and recorded three albums (about 30 songs) since 2014, this was the first time the group went out on a national tour, with the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis a first stop for the band. Vu mentioned early in their set, “This is our first time not in California. The first time ever.””

Minnesota Yacht Club Festival

We’ve previously mentioned the inaugural Minnesota Yacht Club Festival in January, but at that time, nothing was really known about it.

Now that we’ve gotten closer to the date, they’ve announced the full lineup. The two major headliners are Alanis Morissette for Friday and Red Hot Chili Peppers for Saturday’s show. It also looks like there’ll be two stages per day. The reasons for this is because the music can keep going (it might take up to 30 minutes to setup the stage for the next band). Unfortunately, if you want to get a good spot, you might have to pick one stage and camp out there, instead of running back and forth between the two stages.

Anyway, if you show up early, these are the bands that we love and have seen in the past.

We first saw Nico Vega in Oct 2007 and wrote, “So I went to see a few bands played last night. Two were from Sweden, but the best (performance-wise), I thought was Nico Vega, from Los Angeles, California. They're a three-piece band that sounds kind of like a thrash/rap/hard rock band, but what really impressed me was Aja's bold leotard outfit. You can't tell from the photo, but she's also barefoot.”

Oklahoma band Wilderado is touring in support of their new LP Talker via Bright Antenna Records. The album comes out September 20, 2024.

We caught the band in June 2023 and said, “From Tulsa, Oklahoma, the band is comprised of Max Rainer and Tyler Wimpee on vocals and guitar, Justin Kila on drums and David Arthur Timson on bass. Rainer and Wimpee formed the group in 2015 when they met in college and decided to start writing songs by their fifth year when they noticed all their friends had moved on. Their music resides in that aura of transition. Rainer told the Atwood Magazine that it took them five years as a group to all get on the same page. And right now they seemed to have found the right gear with Billboard Magazine describing their sound like a fine whiskey: “Wilderado just goes down easy.””

The Head And The Heart is playing on Friday night. We recently saw them in Jun 2023 and wrote, “We’ve been longtime fans of the band, seeing them on their initial national tour (and an accompanying in-store live set at Electric Fetus in Minneapolis) and several times since, most recently last October in Minnesota. Hopes were dashed that original co-vocalist Josiah Johnson might feel ready enough to join the band on stage for a few dates, including the previous night at Colorado’s Red Rocks, but the band carried on as they always have, impressing veteran followers and making many new ones.”

Crowds gathered seamlessly this year into the Moreno Beach area of Lake Perris for the autumn ritual of camping, yoga, swimming and the hottest bands you’ll see all year. In its 8th go-around, this was a vast improvement from the insane parking situation and nasty weather of 2018, thanks be to the gods. Desert Daze is quite often referred to as the greatest festival ever, and in all my years of music festivals (and believe me, there have been many) I have to concur that this one undoubtably tops the charts. From art instillations that will dazzle your mind to tea ceremonies in tents under the desert morning sky, this festival is for the light of heart, the TRUE music lovers, and the seekers. While I was mesmerized by the first DAZE I attended at the Metaphysics Institute in Joshua Tree in 2017, there is something magical about the festival continuing on with its desert theme while adding a sparkling lake that you can drift in whenever you please. It’s also an hour and a half away from sunny Los Angeles, so fellow Angelenos should consider themselves pretty blessed 🙏.

FRIDAY

Los Angeles psych rockers Frankie and the Witch Fingers played Friday afternoon at The Block Stage. Most of the set consisted of songs from their newest album ZAM, which came out in March. These guys are funky and amazing to see in the daylight because you can really get lost in the goofy faces of frontman Dylan Sizemore. Lead guitarist Josh Menashe donned a dope Canadian tuxedo while slaying away on his solos, and bassist Alex Bulli rocked an 80’s-esq mohawk. Dylan yelled to the crowd towards the end of their set “Thanks for putting this on Phil, it’s the greatest festival in the world!” They ended with the single ‘Tea’, a heavy-hitting single that perfectly topped the performance.

Zachary Cole Smith of Brooklyn’s DIIV announced as they came out on the Moon stage that their new album Deceiver dropped on Friday. “We’re gonna play the whole album. This is kind of a nighttime record…kind of funny to be playing it here…” as the sun was blazing down on the crowd. They went right into Horeshead, the slow, grungy track with the slightly-more-than morbid lyrics “Horsehead…I’m never quite enough…I wanna breathe in and never breathe back out…” Laughing one of the members exclaimed, “Every song is in a different tune.” Skin Game, one of the more dance-worthy songs on the album, is like if Elliot Smith, Silverchair and Explosions in the Sky had a baby, with its transcendent vocals and catchy chorus. “Thanks for coming out guys, you’re being real nice, we thought there’d be like 50 people here,” exclaimed bassist Colin Caulfield, before ending their set with Acheron.

Jessica Pratt came out decked in a black suit wearing dark shades, her blonde hair shaggy around her face as she clutched her acoustic guitar. I had never heard her music before this festival, and after giving her latest album Quiet Signs a solid listen I was beyond thrilled to find this lady. She’s a 70’s folk dream, a lullaby and a haunting figure as she strummed her guitar and mesmerized the crowd with her breathy tunes. Accompanied by Matthew McDermott on piano, the set was slow and soft, a nice sigh of air as festival goers sipped on their coconut waters and beers. Ya gotta stay hydrated in the desert, people.

Atlas Sound’s Bradford Cox came out onto the Moon stage in all of his androgynous glory in a mustard yellow blouse and Mr. Roger’s style trousers. The golden hour sun hit his shaggy brown hair just right as they went into ‘The Light that Failed’, off the album Logos. This is one of my favorite albums of all time so I was beyond stoked that they played mostly the whole thing. The crowd went nuts as Lætitia Sadier from Stereolab came out to join them in the song Quick Canal. This was one of the coolest moments in DD history, in my humble opinion…it was beyond legendary. Afterwards Bradford reapplied his lipstick and sang the lyrics ‘Everything was bathed in light…everything loved its way…everything makes sense when you look at it from another way…’ to end the set.

The group Crumb from New York was a super rad show to see as the sun started to finally give relief over the campgrounds. I believe they mostly played songs from their album Jinx, the song M.R. seeming to be the biggest hit in the crowd. Lila Ramani is hypnotic and a definite stunner, and their music is melodic and super synth-heavy thanks to Brian Aronow. These guys definitely seem to be on the rise and they had just ended a several month tour prior to the festival.

Stereolab was as delightful as I’m sure they were in the 90’s. Laetitia swayed about the Moon stage in a multi-colored dress yelling to the crowd “Let’s ping pong now!” going right into the song off the Mars Audiac Quintet album. She kept saying cute little quips to introduce songs, such as “This is, yes, it’s a love song!” or “Are we all on an extension trip? Yes, this is the future of illusion. Fantasy.” These guys rocked out while still keeping it dreamy with a sort of sprinkling of mod 60’s pop. This upbeat set under an almost full moon was otherworldly and something that is a once in a lifetime experience. Come and Play in the Milky Night and French Disko neared the end of the show, with Lo Boob Oscillator capping it off.

Although I was dying to hear My Girls, electro-psych band Animal Collective’s set did not disappoint. They opened up with the old school tune from 2005’s Feels, Banshee Beat, fronting stunning visuals of disco dancing girls and hearts. These guys played a bunch of new material, a few being “Gem and I”, “Bolder”, and “Strangers”.  Another, “DownDownDownDown” was one that was rare and unreleased. The trippy background art was ridiculous, the one with hands almost holding onto each other being my favorite. Their encore performance was “For Reverend Green”, which they hadn’t played in 12 years.

Desert Daze has been a myriad of magical atmospheric wonder along with the most entertaining of artists .... The Flaming Lips I think this was my first time seeing The Flaming Lips, but I could be wrong. Seems odd that this was "a very special Early Evening performance", since the band's psychedelic/space rock seems to work better at night … Stereolab Headliners include ESG, The Apples in Stereo, Superchunk, Waxahatchee, Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), Sneaks, Elf Power, The Veldt, Pylon Reenactment Society, Eureka California and Tunabunny. … Devo Devo is in top form. They have their show down to an artform, complete with their own lights and fog machine and images on screen. With this sort of tight control over their images … Ween Anyway, Gene and Dean Ween are back, newly reunited as Ween, proving that they haven’t quite push the little daisies just yet. The reunion was announced last year (November 2015) … Wu-Tang Clan The entire Wu-Tang Clan (minus the ones that are no longer on Earth) is back in the studio with RZA for a new record this Fall. In the meantime, the group released "Family Reunion" to celebrate their 20th anniversary. … Temples Along their way to Minneapolis, Temples have been building huge buzz appearing at Great Escape 2013 and (recently) SXSW 2014. With all that excitement for the band, they sold out the Turf Club presale … Alvvays Opening up the show will be Alvvays, who we recently caught at the Turf Club on December 2014 and reported, "Although the band only has one album, you couldn’t ask for better surf-pop sweetness." … Pussy Riot A similar story happened with Russian punk group Pussy Riot being jailed for performing "Virgin Mary, Please Drive Putin Away" song in front of a church…

It is said that autumn is a time of rebirth, reflection and revitalization the soul. It’s a time of coziness, togetherness and ease as the cooler weather blankets our everyday lives. For some this means pumpkin spice lattes and dinners with friends by a fire and for some, it means an expansive weekend long music festival filled with a wonderland of modern-day rock legends. It means a perfectly curated playground of psychedelic art and communion with the promise of an all-around good freakin’ time. For some, the allurement of this season is the sprinkling of rock tunes on your tongue and a whole new version of Woodstock. Rock, my friends, is not dead.

This festival has undoubtably earned the title of a SoCal staple as each year gets seemingly better and better. Last year was challenging with the rain and the parking situation of a new venue, but the location is in the same stunning setting of Moreno Beach (situated beautifully between the San Jacinto and San Bernardino Mountains), so this year they’ve worked out the kinks. You can float peacefully on the lake while hearing your favorite bands christen the sky in the background. You can head on over to The Mystic Bazaar, a safe haven for those needing a breather from the enormity of the crowd energy. Here in this village holds all the yoga, tea ceremonies and sound baths your little heart can desire. The amenities and curated adornments here are endless, and there is always some amazement around every corner.

Now for the bands!

The gentleness of Friday starts out with Triptides, Wave, Frankie and the Witch Fingers and DIIV. Brooklyn’s DIIV released their third album, Deceiver, yesterday on the label Captured Tracks. The album is grungier than they’ve been in the past with a kind of Silverchair resemblance to it, so with this drop it is sure to be a highly anticipated performance. Singer-songwriter Jessica Pratt will be performing recent LP Quiet Signs at the Block at 4pm. Fred Armisen will do a comedy set in the mid-afternoon, followed by Atlas Sound and Crumb.

Saturday kicks off with Blackwater Holylight, the super heavy psych all-girl band from Portland. This group has all the elements to make you squirm and drool with delight, from folk-rock to grunge melodies to whispers of gothic intensity…and they’re mesmerizing onstage. Following acts are Klaus Johann Grobe, Altin Gün, Anika, Surfbort, Big Business and the true legends themselves- JJUUJJUU. Going into sunset time is DEVO, Cruel Diagnonals and Lumerians. Ween, Nick Hakim, and Pussy Riot. Temples highlight the evening.

The most massive act on the list is surely Wu-Tang Clan, performing their 36 Chambers LP on Sunday. The crew of DD this year (started by Phil Pirrone’s of JJUUJJUU, who always performs at least one killer set) were smart, because they saved a ton of the most exciting acts for the wee hours into Sunday evening. Also performing Sunday are Dead Meadow, Moses Sumney, The Black Angels, White Fence and Shintaro Sakamoto, to name a few.

Weather permitting (Tame Impala got rained out last year halfway through their set) this upcoming weekend will surely be one of mystery, wonderment and delight. The scintillating adventure of time travel or a portal to a new universe is always optional…but never enforced.

American psychedelic rock band The Brian Jonestown Massacre was named after the original band leader of The Rolling Stones, Brian Jones, and the Jonestown mass murder of over 900 people in a remote religious commune. Both topics were subjects of death and conspiracies.

Perhaps The Brian Jonestown Massacre was best known for appearing in the film Dig! with their rival The Dandy Warhols.

We caught the band in Playground Weekender 2010 and wrote, “The Brian Jonestown Massacre we nearly at the top of my list of bands for the weekend and quite a fitting choice to end the Friday evening line-up. Not too raucous for those of us who were looking forward to a nice nap (*ahem*), but by no means boring. Psychedelic-shoe gaze rock, with tambourine included. Sure many of their songs sounded quite alike to me, but the upside is that even though they sounded quite similar, they were all equally as good. The set even saw a guest appearance from Aimee Nash from The Black Ryder.”

Opening up the MN show will be locals Magic Castles, who we caught in 2013 and loved them: “I actually thought Magic Castles was very good. It's certainly the only band the featured a flutist on an explosive jam at their set closer.”

Although they are known as The English Beat in the USA market and The British Beat in Australia... they’ll always be known as The Beat to fans of two tone ska fans.

The story behind the US name change is because the US already had and established powerpop band The Beat (later known as The Paul Collins Beat). Collins and the UK Beat eventually made-up and actually went on tour together in 2012.

The Beat will be doing a two night residency at the Dakota Jazz Club this Friday and Saturday.

NPR named Ibeyi's album as one of their "25 Favorite Albums of 2015" and also named Ibeyi one of their "Favorite Artists of 2015."

We previously caught the twin sisters (Naomi and Lisa-Kainde Diaz) at the Cedar Cultural Center last March 2015, and wrote, "The combination of vocals, traditional Cuban instruments, and electronic loops/beats, gave Ibeyi's music a broad appeal to both old and young world music fans."

We caught Man Man at a music festival in 2009, and they were clearly the stand-out highlight of that show. The high energy band will be back in Twin Cities on September 22nd at the Turf Club.

Like we have previously mentioned last year, the band is still touring in support of On Oni Pond (ANTI- Records).

Shilpa Ray to open. If the name sounded familiar, she used to be in a "Goth burlesque"-esque band called Shilpa Ray and her Happy Hookers. Since going solo, she's released three albums - her latest Last Year's Savage is out now on Northern Spy Records.

The last time we saw Wavves, it was in 2013 and we wrote, "Other highlights included “Sail to the Sun” and “Green Eyes”, ending with a jagged cover of Sonic Youth’s “100%” and ”Post Acid”, that left both band members and crowd exhausted, but exhilarated."

Chicago's Twin Peaks (no relationship to David Lynch) is possibly the other co-headliner.

Since you're all familiar with Wavves and Twin Peaks, let me tell you about the other two other bands:

Recently, Bay Area quartet SWMRS (Swimmers) released their debut single "Miley", which i-D Magazine described as "the most punk tribute to Miley Cyrus ever." Singer Cole Becker explained, "I was trying to explore my relationship to Miley Cyrus as this person who has been a presence in my life since I was really young. I feel like I grew up with her... I think it's just the fact that she does exactly what she wants. I think it's really rare to see somebody doing that. She's a business commodity, but seems to have maintained a lot of creative autonomy, which I think is super punk rock. And the fact that she's standing up for sexual freedom and gender fluidity - I think that's really important, and something that not a lot of pop stars are doing."

Steep Leans is the solo project of songwriter Gray Somers. He recently signed to Ghost Ramp and released his debut LP, Grips On Heat, which Noisey is currently streaming the album from now until it's release date on September 18th (in four days).

Los Angeles rock band Dawes, who recently appeared on Conan O'Brien to play "Things Happen," is currently on tour in support of their latest All Your Favorite Bands, an LP produced by Dave Rawlings.
