Chicago’s Horsegirl is currently on tour for their debut album Versions of Modern Performance (Matador Records), stopping by the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on July 26th.

The original support band Dummy had to bail out. The Los Angeles band released their debut LP on Chicago’s Trouble in Mind Records… which may explain how they knew Horsegirl (based out of Chicago).

Instead, Chicago’s Lifeguard opened the show. The very young band, named “The best teenage band since Squirrel Bait” was very excited to play outside of Chicago.

The trio (Kai Slater on guitars and vocals, Asher Case on bass, and Isaac Lowenstein on drummer) looks like they’re still in high school. They did look nervous, but, as I mentioned before, they also seemed really excited to play for us. Bassist Asher hid in his afro, at first, but did warmed up as their set went on.

As soon as Asher said it was okay to come closer to the stage, everyone stepped forward… including two dedicated head boppers at the front of the stage.

Lifeguard Setlist

As you can see from their hand-written setlist, they played everything from their latest EP, Crowd Can Talk, and throwing in some other singles they’ve released in 2020-2021.

Horsegirl confessed that they’re in league with other youth bands, such as Lifeguard, Post Office Winter and Friko, and they are proud of their team-ups.

I previously mentioned in Jul 2021, “It should be interesting to see where the band lands as the trio continues to grow and attend college later this year. We’re also curious to see a debut album with their recent signing with Matador Records.”

A year later, I can let you know that the trio (Penelope Lowenstein, Nora Cheng, and Gigi Reece) seemed to be sharing more vocals/songs between its two singers Penelope and Nora (before it looked like Penelope did most of the heavy lifting).

They’ve also seem to downplay their experimental “Sonic Youth” fiddling and seemed focused on being a teenage rock trio. They’re still learning, they’re still evolving... and that’s exciting.

Horsegirl’s debut album Versions of Modern Performance is available now on Matador Records.

Chicago rock band Horsegirl recently released their debut album Versions of Modern Performance, available now on Matador Records.

The all-girls trio, featuring singer/guitarist Penelope Lowenstein, guitarist/singer Nora Cheng, and drummer Gigi Reece, is currently touring in support of the debut album.

We caught the band early in post-pandemic concerts on July 8, 2021, and wrote, “So, the funny thing is that this was an 18+ show, meaning that members of Chicago’s Horsegirl could not legally attend the show on their own. However, as performers, it’s perfectly fine. This was Horsegirl’s first tour, but you wouldn’t know, seeing as how seasoned they seem on stage. We’ve seen old, established bands screwing up and goofing around, so it was nice to see such a young band taking their shows seriously.”

Machine Gun Kelly is touring in support of his latest No. 1 album, mainstream sellout (Bad Boy/Interscope Records). The tour will stop by the Xcel Energy Center in St Paul on July 28th.

Avril Lavigne is one of the opener. We last heard from the queen of pop-punk earlier this year, when she released her her highly anticipated new album Love Sux. The record features collaborations with Travis Barker, Blackbear and rapper turned emo enthusiast Machine Gun Kelly (so expect to see him show up to do a duet on her set).

WILLOW will warm up the show. WILLOW’s new single “ it’s my fault” is taken from her forthcoming album. Already she’s released a series of collaboration singles, including Yungblud with “Memories” and Siiickbrain with “Purge.”

Jazz trio Jeremy Cunningham / Dustin Laurenzi / Paul Bryan will be stopping by the Icehouse on July 28th, in support of their debut record A Better Ghost Out (Northern Spy).

Drummer Jeremy Cunningham is from Resavoir, saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi has played with Bon Iver, and bassist/producer Paul Bryan played with Jeff Parker… the three have been collaborating for years, working in various groups across Chicago’s vibrant jazz community, but they unite with A Better Ghost

The limited four shows-Midwest tour will end in their hometown, Chicago.

A Mike Lewis Music Band is listed to open.

English rock group The Psychedelic Furs is back with their latest album, Made of Rain. The tour will run through St Paul, at the Palace Theatre this July 30th.

We saw the band in Apr 2017 and wrote, “The Furs’ second half of the set picked up with some of their biggest hits, including ‘Love My Way’ and set closer ‘Pretty in Pink’. Half the audience were singing along to the latter song.”

Impossible to Google, X, will open. X appeared on Rock the Garden 2019, and we said, “If you asked me, all the older fans were very eager to have Los Angeles’ X back in town. As we previously mentioned, the band’s name is impossible to search for in the Google-age. Still, the first wave punk band, featuring original members of vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D. J. Bonebrake, proudly played through their decade plus of music.”

St. Louis’ Foxing is headlining the Fine Line this July 27.

We caught Foxing’s first-ever headlining tour in Mar 2016 and wrote, “As you can see from their setlist, “Weave” was cross-off in favor of playing “Redwoods” live. The set is a pretty good mix of their two released albums The Albatross and Dealer. While some people described the band as emo, they also have their chamer/folksy-side to them, that is whenever touring member Emma Tiemann would play violin or when singer Conor Murphy would take out his trumpet.”

American folk singer/songwriter Nina Nastasia will be releasing her first album in 12 years, called Riderless Horse, on July 22th, via Temporary Residence. The vinyl will be released in November.

Nastasia wrote:

Riderless Horse is my first solo record, and it's the first record my former partner, Kennan Gudjonsson, didn't produce.I haven't made an album since 2010. I decided to stop pursuing music several years after my sixth record, Outlaster, because of unhappiness, overwhelming chaos, mental illness, and my tragically dysfunctional relationship with Kennan. Creating music had always been a positive outlet during difficult times, but eventually it became a source of absolute misery.Kennan, a cat and I lived in a studio apartment in NYC for 25 years, finding ways to survive while making records and going on tours. Our apartment was the place where people would come stay, eat, drink, play music, and use our tub. It was quite a home we had created, but it was decaying steadily from the moment we moved in, and in the end, it was as if black mold was growing beneath the surface, undetected, and the two of us were dying and getting too weak to ever leave. We loved each other. We were each other's family, but there was ongoing abuse, control and manipulation. We hid. We didn't want anyone to see how ugly things could get, so we increasingly isolated from our friends and family. We were lost.On January 26, 2020, I made the decision to separate and live apart, and on January 27, Kennan died by suicide. What a thing, suicide. I can only feel sadness and guilt about it. Maybe I'll have other reactions to it later on.Riderless Horse documents the grief, but it also marks moments of empowerment and a real happiness in discovering my own capability. Steve Albini produced this record with me, and Greg Norman assisted. The three of us are old friends, and we did a field recording in a guesthouse built like a lighthouse that two very dear friends of mine have in Esopus, NY. It was exactly the right environment to work on this record. We all had meals together, cried, laughed, and told stories. It was perfect. It made me realize how much I love writing, playing and recording music.Terrible things happen. These were some terrible things. So, what to do - learn something valuable, connect with people, move the f**k out of that apartment, remember the humor, find the humor, tell the truth, and make a record. I made a record.

It’s our first live show since Wire at the Fine Line Music Cafe in March 2020… right before the pandemic shut down all live shows. So it’s been well over a year, and we were anxious and nervous to see Horsegirl at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last night.

Before you ask, masks were not required. We brought masks just in case, but looking around, no one (except for some First Avenue staffs) were wearing face coverings.

7th Street Entry now has a metal detector right at the door. This might be a permanent fixture… so going forward, it may take much longer to get inside the venue due to false positives or random issues.

The stage and room is exactly as we last saw it. If you’ve ever attended a show here, it’s one of the most intimate venue in town… and it’s a great place to see a band, big or small.

Starting off this Radio K sponsored show, was local band Harlow. The five-piece is really new, only releasing their single “Yesterday Is Gone” in July 2021… which the band happily played near the end of their set.

Other songs on their set included, “Too Many Sides (of the Same Coin)” and a song about something like “Rainbow Trout” (a “fake country song”).

Next up was Catbath. We’ve seen the Minneapolis group four times, including with The Coathangers in Sep 2015, and have described them as, “it’s like Kurt Cobain fronting X covering the B-52s.”

We also mentioned that they used to be a duo (Travis Franklin and Crystal Stockert), then trio (added Kristin Kosieracki), and eventually a quartet (added Matthew ‘Gravey’ Graves). Their latest evolution is that they’ve enlisted Danielle Cusack to replace Kristin. If you’re at all a fan of Bruised Violet or Tony Peachka, you know who Danielle is.

Since the pandemic hit, the band spent the year writing and ended up recording over 15 new songs at the end of 2020… so they were eager to show off the new songs, such as “Bork Bork”, in their set.

So, the funny thing is that this was an 18+ show, meaning that members of Chicago’s Horsegirl could not legally attend the show on their own. However, as performers, it’s perfectly fine.

This was Horsegirl’s first tour, but you wouldn’t know, seeing as how seasoned they seem on stage. We’ve seen old, established bands screwing up and goofing around, so it was nice to see such a young band taking their shows seriously.

Since the trio (Penelope Lowenstein, Nora Cheng, and Gigi Reece) is practically brand new, they basically played every songs they’ve ever recorded, including “Ballroom Dance Scene” and “Forecast”. Between each song, they would created these interlude jams/noise, as the stage lights turn blood red, probably inspired from being in a Sonic Youth cover band.

Some of the new songs heard was “Emma”… described as “a love song”. In a past interviews, they’ve mentioned they wouldn’t write about love or personal heartbreak, so it was a rare thing to see them write a love song.

It should be interesting to see where the band lands as the trio continues to grow and attend college later this year. We’re also curious to see a debut album with their recent signing with Matador Records.

We’ve been following Modest Mouse’s rise to the top of the charts since the 90s. When they really hit it big time, they even hired famed-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to write some of their now-classic songs like “Dashboard” and “Missed the Boat”. That record with Marr, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank was the first Modest Mouse album to reach #1 in the US Billboard 200 Charts.

We got a few chances to see Modest Mouse live, the last time was in June 2015 and we noted: “…there was a question of being rusty or not, and singer Isaac Brock had revealed that he had somehow sprained his ankle at the hotel the night before. Both mysteries were revealed (no, not rusty, and too tight sheets, apparently) and Modest Mouse played a crowd-pleasing 70 min. set to the faithful that had been waiting these many years to see them again live.”

With concerts slowing coming back to America, Modest Mouse announced their 2021 tour dates, all in support of their new album The Golden Casket (available June 25th via Epic Records).

The two surviving The Monkees band members, Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith, have reunited to go on The Monkees Farewell Tour in 2021. It’s interesting to see Nesmith back on tour, considering that after he inherited his mother’s estate and ultimately retired from the road (he declined to join The Monkees 20th Anniversary Tour)… but considering that Peter Tork died in 2019 and Davy Jones died in 2012 - now is probably the best (and only time) for Nesmith to make amends to Monkees fans.

We’re obviously big fans, everyone around our age watched The Monkees television show. When we saw Dolenz and Tork in May 2017, we were surprised to learn that the actors were actually seasoned musicians and were eager to play their own instruments (but the show and record label hired session musicians instead).

The duo promised “a magical night of music: all the hits, deep cuts & fan favorites”.

Chicago’s Horsegirl (Penelope Lowenstein, Nora Cheng, and Gigi Reece) recently announced their first-ever tour. The noise trio signed with Matador Records and sold out their Ballroom Dance Scene 7” debut.

The Horsegirl Midwest tour will take place at several key cities, including live debut appearances in Madison, Minneapolis, and Milwaukee, plus a hometown show to cap it off.

They’re also appearing at Pitchfork Music Festival, so expect big things from this new band.

Minneapolis fans will be happy to note that another animal-band called Catbath will open.

Milkwaukee’s Buffalo Nichols (aka Carl Nichols) has rescheduled his Midwest tour this Summer. His previous Minneapolis shows (in March, April and May 2020) had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fourth time’s the charm, Buffalo Nichols will be in Minneapolis on July 26th. This might be the best time to catch him at an intimate setting, as the next Minnesota appearance will be with Drive-By Truckers on October 9th (aka “Rocktober”) at the Palace Theatre.
