Japanese voice artist Hatis Noit ended her USA tour in support of Aura at the Cedar Cultural Center, on April 7, 2024.
Opening the show was Chama Devora, a duo featuring Crystal Mysaljek and Liz Draper. According to the Cedar’s introduction, they’ve participated in the Drones Not Drones charity show to raise money for doctors Without Borders. The Drone’s unified 28-hour song (yes a 28-hour song) features many local musicians and have become a local fan favorites. Fans, knowing the endurance of the show, will often bring their own sleeping bag and find a spot to set up to enjoy the day and a half show.
With that said, based on their adaption and extended experimental music, Chama Devora would fit right in the drone show.
Hatis Noit came on stage, walking through the audience, singing in the dark, before going on stage. When you first hear the singing, you couldn’t quite make out where it was coming from, because the venue was in darkness.
This concert is like no other. Hatis Noit wears a flowing dress with a feather nose piece. There are no bands, no instruments… instead all the music were created using her voice (with one exception, but we’ll get to that later).
The songs were created live using a machine called a Looper, which we’ve seen demonstrated by other musicians in the past … but usually those one-man-band are using the looper to loop music notes that they play as a backing track. With Hatis Noit, it’s pure vocal.
As I previously mentioned, there is one exception, and that is for the song “Inori” (Prayer), in which she played a recording of the sound of the ocean at Hiroshima.
