Opening the show was Iowa City’s Halfloves, who we previously mentioned was previously known as The Olympics, opened the show… replacing Teenage Dads, who could not make it to the Turf Club.
Halfloves seemed really happy to be on stage. They played a new song for us called “C U Later”, but I felt the highlight of their set was the TikTok song, “Do U Follow Me?”… based on these two song titles, they must’ve come from the Prince’s school of spelling.
Speaking of spelling, they ended their set with “Not Too Keen”, which they misspelled on the setlist as “Not Too Queen”. Did the person misheard, or are they just having a go?
Trivia: apparently Halfloves sells their own coffee brand. I guess they must drink a lot of coffee to stay awake while doing those drives from city to city.
Australian pop rock group Lime Cordiale is a duo, consisting of brothers Oli and Louis Leimbach, but when they play live, they have additional members James Jennings (drums), Felix Bornholt (keys) and Nicholas Polovineo (guitars/trombone). Their debut album Permanent Vacation came out in 2017, but it wasn’t until their collaboration with English actor-musician Idris Elba in 2022 for Cordi Elba, that really put the band on the map on the international stage.
Lime Cordiale’s Oliver Leimbach wrote about their team-up, saying “We wrote everything together. We were all writing lyrics – it wasn’t our music or his music, it was smack bang down the middle with every lyric.”
It just so happens that their new-ish single “Facts of Life”, then “Country Club”, both landed on the ARIA hottest 100 singles.
Although the band is described as pop rock, based on seeing the trombone and clarinet (and occasional kazoo), you get the impression that the band sometimes jazz it up with extended solos. For example, at any given point, someone could just jump on stage and starts jamming with the band without missing a beat, the band will accommodate.
Highlight of their set was, of course, “Facts of Life”, in which Louis Leimbach took a selfie, with their backs turned to the audience, all while singing.
My personal favorite was their cover of the Divinyls’ “I Touch Myself”, clearly paying homage to their hometown Sydney.
Lime Cordiale’s latest 14 Steps to a Better You is out now.
