Celebrity, businesswoman, socialite, and star of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and various reality show spinoffs, Kim Kardashian, has released her sultry rendition of “Santa Baby.”

The release includes a music video from Nadia Lee Cohen and Charlie Denis by DMB Represents, featured a cameo from Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin.

I did watch the video, it’s terrible. They made this decision to put in glitches and VHS tracking and various low-quality video grains (to simulate that this was filmed in the 80s). Maybe this kind of weird video degradation is what the kids are into, but for me, it’s just unwatchable.

The concept seems cool, it looks like a one-shot video with no cuts. It follows Kim Kardashian crawling through this house full of random people and scenes.

The original 1953 “Santa Baby” song was by Eartha Kitt with Henri René and His Orchestra. Despite being “too sexy”, the song proved to be very popular, with many singers covering the song, such as Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Taylor Swift, Lindsey Stirling, Trisha Yearwood, Laufey, the Pussycat Dolls, Ariana Grande and Gwen Stefani.

I’ll admit I’ve never heard of Saweetie until I bought her McDonald’s meal. I think you’ve really made it when you’re featured on a fast food chain. By the way, I did like the Saweetie’s meal.

Anyway, the multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated Saweetie released Dear Big Santa, out now on Warner Records.

The two-track single features “Big Santa” and “I Want You This Christmas”, brings in a little naughty and nice combo. The former song is an upbeat anthem, while the B-Side taps into Saweetie’s melodic, seductive side.

“The holidays are all about spreading love, having fun, and, of course, looking good while doing it!” Saweetie shares. “I wanted to give my fans music they can vibe to whether they’re cuddled up or turning up. 'Dear Big Santa' is my little gift to them.”

Los Angeles-based vocalist Staci Griesbach has released a new holiday single, featuring original music and lyrics, called “Be My Santa Tonight”. The song is described as blending Mariah Carey’s holiday songs with Meghan Trainor’s playful lyrics.

“Everyone wants Santa Claus to bring them something on their wish list, and I wondered, ‘What about Santa himself?’,” Griesbach said playfully, referring to the tongue-and-cheek lyrics. “Christmas can be a time to let your cares go, enjoy the spirit of the holidays and perhaps find new love! I’m a hopeless romantic, and I think there’s always an opportunity to find the love of your life at a holiday party, just like in Bridget Jones Diary with Mr. Darcy.”

“Be My Santa Tonight” features original music and lyrics by Staci Griesbach, along with her band: pianist Tamir Hendelman, bassist Kevin Axt and drummer Jake Reed.

Chicago’s singer/ songwriter Katie Kadan is back with another original track for the holiday season called “Hey, Mr. Santa.”

“Instead of your typical Christmas song about decorating trees, cozying up with a loved one or listening for sleigh bells, we wanted to write a Christmas song with the cheeky fun my fans know and love,” shared Kadan. “This song is for all of my single folks out there. I hope you find a Santa to get wrapped up with this holiday season.”

The original song was written by Kadan with Johnny Reid, who also serves as producer.

Sister duo CocoRosie (Bianca and Sierra Casady) recently released a brand new song called “Least I Have You.” The sisters are currently, in the studio, they are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year and beginning a new era.

“Up until this song, we used to take our pain out on each other,” says Sierra. “Until we allowed our sisterhood to become the antidote to the damage that came in our younger years.” The song, Bianca adds, came “just in a simple way.” “It's vulnerable. It's cute. It's cliche. It's all these things I don't think we would have been able to approach in the past.”

CocoRosie recently re-issued their breakout album La Maison de Mon Reve and wrapped up their international tour in April with pianist Gael Rakotondrabe.

But just before the show, it was announced Busdriver was not opening up the show, leaving CocoRosie to start their set incredibly early at 8:15pm. She’s grown musically and otherwise since then, dabbled in rock and punk and electropop, and has five albums to her discography, including 9 Sad Symphonies, released this summer on the lauded Kill Rock Stars label. The dream of the Riot Grrrl ‘90s scene is still alive, and you’re in luck, ‘cos one of the stalwarts of the scene, Bikini Kill, is on tour this year in the U.S. and abroad. After a springtime South American tour, followed by a visit to Europe and the UK, the band hits the road all over the U.S., hitting different cities throughout the West Coast, Midwest, and Eastern seaboard. Guitarist Sara Landeau joins founding members Kathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail, and Kathi Wilcox, so expect the scintillating grooves and likely some politically-charged banter between songs as we hurtle towards another contentious presidential election. There’s no new album to promote, so fans can gear up for their favorite hits and, hopefully, some deep cuts for the diehards. We saw Cat Power in 01 Apr 2019 and wrote, “As for the show, Chan Marshall is backed up by a full backing live band, featuring Erik Paparazzi on keys, Adeline Jasso on guitars, and Alianna Kalaba on drums. Marshall’s role was just as a vocalist… and, man, hearing Chan Marshall’s voice again is unbelievably good. She has such an unmistakable voice, and hearing her apply her vocals to a variety of cover songs (anything from Sinead O’Connor’s “I Am Stretched on Your Grave” to Lana Del Rey’s “White Mustang”) was just wonderful… even though these cover songs are often under the “Cat Power Version” (meaning that the songs aren’t necessary recognizable at first because it’s so different).”

Los Angeles’ Cherry Glazerr (led by Clementine Creevy) will be headlining the Fine Line Music Café, in Minneapolis, on March 8, 2024, in support of the new album I Don’t Want You Anymore (Secretly Canadian).

The “mature” album, I Don’t Want You Anymore was co-produced with Yves Rothman (Yves Tumor, Blondshell, Amaarae), and is in reference to her personal growth.

The New York Times describes it as an album that “wrestles with a clearly toxic relationship. As the songs go style-hopping — explosive grunge, chugging synth-pop, hints of funk and jazz — the obsession persists.”

Mary Timony is from one of my favorite bands, Helium. Unfortunately, the band broke up in 1999. Timony continues on as solo artist and also started Ex Hex in 2013.

Timony’s first new solo album in 15 years is called Untame the Tiger. The record comes out February 23rd on Merge Records, and there will be a 2024 tour to support the album.

It’ll be good to see Timony again at the tiny venue, as we last seen her solo (note: not as “The Mary Timony Band”) in May 25, 2005. Yes, 19 years ago!

We also caught Mary Timony’s band Ex Hex at the Triple Rock Social Club, in July 20, 2015, and wrote, “I've said this before, but I'm a big Helium fan, the band that featured Mary Timony. Although I never saw Helium, I did catch Timony when she toured in 2005, in support of her Ex Hex album. Of course, nearly ten years later, she would form a new band Ex Hex with Betsy Wright and Laura Harris. As expected with bands with only one album, the trio played their entire album live... but throwing in a cover or two to stretch out the time for a full set. Most of the songs were sung by Timony, except Wright took over two songs on their set: "How You Got That Girl" and "Radio On".”

We saw Black Joe Lewis at First Avenue, in 01 Oct 2013, and wrote, ““Everything’s bigger in Texas” they say, and Austin-based Black Joe Lewis brought their full platter of soul, R & B, funk, punk, garage, and blues to a diverse crowd of young and old, mostly male, with couples scattered about the floor. The guitarist was ably backed by bass and drums and an enthusiastic three-piece horn section (Jason Frey, Derek Phelps, Joseph Woullar), that instigated the crowd most of the evening. The set concentrated on most of the new album, which is more guitar-laden, but the horns were also turned up in the mix and proved to be vital during most of the songs performed.”

Nanna, from Of Monsters and Men, is currently on tour in support of her debut solo album How to Start a Garden (Republic Records).

Talking about the album, Nanna said, “A lot of things had to end for this album to become what it is. A long term relationship, my prior sense of home and belonging and security. But it’s also an ode to the joy of new beginnings: new relationships, a new home, new friendships, a new sense of self. The album takes place in this in-between state. I wrote it in Iceland and recorded it between Iceland and upstate New York. It captures a very specific time in my life of curiosity and reflection, when I felt very much in the middle of a surreal new reality and didn’t have a clear path in my direction—like how a snowstorm is somehow chaotic but calm at the same time.”

Los Angeles’ The Dollyrots will officially kick off their The Hey Girl 2023 USA Tour in Chicago, before stopping by the Uptown VFW, in Minneapolis, on March 10th. The band is currently in the middle of a UK tour.

The Dollyrots’ are working with Little Steven Van Zandt’s Wicked Cool Records, and their most recent release is Down The Rabbit Hole, a 24-track collection of B-sides, rarities, and cover songs.

We first wrote about the band in Sep 2012 when they released their self-titled album via Storefront Recordings.

Our friends The Von Tramps (we know them through Fuzzy Machete) will be their special support for the Hey Girl tour.

Country music artist Morgan Wade will be headlining First Avenue on March 11, 2023.

Officially Wade has one album Reckless on Thirty Tigers, but she has way more songs in her music catalog… thanks to unreleased songs and her self-release Puppets with My Heart (under The Stepbrothers) in 2018.

The American country music singer is based out of Floyd, Virginia, and began writing songs as freshman in college. When performing at FloydFest, Jason Isbell’s sound engineer gave her record to guitarist Sadler Vaden, and with his help, they put together Reckless. The record charted number 14 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers charts.

The hit album was re-released as a Deluxe Album in early 2022, with six bonus track… one of them being a cover of Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds”.

Alternative/pop 18-year-old singer artist Jessie Murph (not to be confused with Jessie Murphy) will be heading out on her first ever North American tour in support of her debut mixtape. It is set to release February 10th and will also include songs “Always Been You,” “If I Died Last Night,” and “Pray” as well as three new tracks.

One of those new song is called “About You”. The track was recorded with Gabe Simon (Dua Lipa, Noah Kahan) and Yakob (6lack, Giveon), and drew inspiration from her personal experience with a toxic relationship.

We last mentioned that she released her debut EP Girls In Purgatory… so most of the songs played were taken from the debut, including “Falling In Love” and “In My Way”. She also had some new songs that haven’t been released yet. One of those songs, which I’ll call “Get Off My D**k” (based on a partial setlist that she released on her Facebook page), was written after being stood up from a record label.”

New Zealand-based quartet The Beths is back on tour in support of their album Expert In A Dying Field (Carpark Records).

We saw The Beths in Mar 2022 and wrote, “As for The Beths (singer and guitarist Liz Stokes, lead guitarist Jonathan Pearce, bassist Benjamin Sinclair, and drummer Tristan Deck) … it’s been a while since we last saw the band at Rock the Garden in 2019. We wrote, “Chicago Tribune called The Beths, one of the “best up-and-coming bands”, so we were really eager to catch this young New Zealand trio (Elizabeth Stokes, Jonathan Pearce and Benjamin Sinclair) on tour. This is also partly because they are one of those few bands that we haven’t covered and was excited to see their first time in the area. According to guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Pearce, the band have been on a co-headlining tour with Bad Bad Hats since February 2019, so they were pretty happy to share the stage once again with the local band. The band basically played their debut Future Me Hates Me, available now from Carpark Records.”

Every riot grrrl fan is excited about Bikini Kill coming to St Paul this April 20th… so it’s even more exciting to hear that Kathleen Hanna’s art/dance project Le Tigre have reformed to launch their first tour in 18 years! Unfortunately, they’re not stopping by Minneapolis this year… but there’s always hope for next year.

I’ve seen Le Tigre twice, including their big First Avenue show in August 2005, writing, “The end of their set was really, really fun, they played all the hits: "Hot Topic", "TKO", and the finale "Deceptacon".”

I’ve been a “top fan” for French artist Yelle since I heard the song “Je Veux Te Voir”.

It was announced recently that Yelle’s new single, “Top Fan” is out now. I recently saw the official music video on YouTube and, as always, they are truly amazing.

The single is taken from their fourth album L'ère Du Verseau (aka The Age Of Aquarius) – their first new album in 6 years, that came out in 2020… Unfortunately due to the pandemic, they were not able to come to America for a tour.

Now that the pandemic is over, the upcoming Yelle tour will start at the end of February in Washington DC’s 9:30 Club, and will stop in New York for 2 Elsewhere dates, before going to the west coast to play Los Angeles and end at San Diego’s influential CRSSD Festival.

The 501(c)3 non-profit organization Women In Music announced in person chapter events for their third annual educational Summit, taking place next week, January 25-27. In person events already started on January 24 and will continue until the 27th… featuring chapters in Nashville, Chicago, Boston, and Denver in addition to the online programming scheduled from January 25-27.

The highlight for me is that Molly Neuman, from Bratmobile, will hold a panel. She’ll be discussing her career path as a drummer in Bratmobile, part of the massively influential riot grrrl movement of the 1990s.

Riothorse Royale (21 May 2015)

We saw Diaz with Emily Greene when they were touring as Riothorse Royale at Triple Rock Social Club in May 2015 and wrote, “… Riothorse Royale, a harmonizing duo of Madi Diaz (who we mentioned in September 2011) and Emily Greene (not related to singer Emily Kinney who plays Beth Greene on the Walking Dead). For the tour, they employed a male drummer. The band is really new and with only one release, as expected, played the entire The Guest House EP. Making up the rest of their 35-minute set were three new songs, which I don't actually have titles for.”

GRAMMY® Award-winning, multi-platinum pop singer-songwriter Daya is touring in support of In Between Dreams (Sandlot/AWAL). The tour will stop in St Paul at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall on November 6.

“The songs on the new EP deal with that gray area in between dreams and reality,” Daya says, “contrasting the romantic notions of what my relationship was versus the stark reality of what actually happened.
