When we heard that Gang of Four founding member Andy Gill died in Feb 2020, we were wondering how that affected the band… considering that at the time, Gill was the only original member.

The new touring lineup will now feature the return of founding members Jon King (lead vocals) and Hugo Burnham (drums), alongside returning bassist Sara Lee and new guitarist David Pajo (Slint,Yeah Yeah Yeahs). Founding member Dave Allen will not tour with Gang of Four due to personal reasons but remains an essential and vital part of the band.

We, of course, love the band, and have described them as, “This ain't no tribute act; these guys are professionals and they have excellent chemistry with Gill. What I love most about Gang of Four's music is the funky groove of bass and drum - listen to any of those early singles like "Not Great Men" and "Damaged Goods" and try not shaking your head or wiggling your hips.”

Phil Elverum, aka The Microphones, announced their first North American tour in 18 years. The tour is in support of last year’s Microphones in 2020 album… the first since 2003’s Mount Eerie.

Phil Elverum wrote, “We, the band called ‘the Microphones,’ are planning to go on a tour playing concerts in some North American towns for a few weeks in the spring of 2022. This will be the first ‘Microphones’ tour in 18 years, but as listeners to our last record (Microphones in 2020) will have hopefully heard, this doesn't mean much. This has always been a project steering toward present-moment raw wound engagement, disappointing the nostalgics, splashing into the unfamiliar. It's not a reunion (nothing to reunite) and it's not commemorative. It's a living thing. We're playing our one long song, F#m and D for a super long time, and inviting everyone to come get thumped by it. Who knows what else will happen?” -

We are sad to learn that Gang of Four’s guitarist and founder Andy Gill has died at the age of 64, due to short respiratory illness.

We last saw the influential post-punk British band in Sep 2016 and wrote, “Though Gang of Four has largely consisted of new faces since 2008, the current line-up of drummer Jonny Finnegan, lead vocalist John "Gaoler" Sterry and bassist Thomas McNeice more than capably fill the very large shoes of their musical forefathers. This ain't no tribute act; these guys are professionals and they have excellent chemistry with [Andy] Gill. What I love most about Gang of Four's music is the funky groove of bass and drum - listen to any of those early singles like "Not Great Men" and "Damaged Goods" and try not shaking your head or wiggling your hips.”

Last Thursday night in Minneapolis offered yet another evening bursting with musical activity and for those of you out there who struggle with indecision... well, you have my sympathies, but the right choice was pretty clear. There in the mainroom of First Avenue legendary post-punk quartet Gang of Four (featuring sole original member and influential guitarist Andy Gill) and early 00's dance-punks The Faint put on one of the most exhilarating shows of the year.

Fans who arrived early to the venue enjoyed music videos from DJ Jake Rudh. If you’ve ever been to his “Transmission” dance nights, then you know what he likes to play: a lot of 70s/80s bands (surprisingly a lot of David Bowie videos).

Opening up the show was Pictureplane (aka Travis Egedy) from Brooklyn, New York. He was a one-man DJ / singer / producer, playing for about 45 minutes, starting with one of his biggest hit song ‘Breath Work’.

Though Gang of Four has largely consisted of new faces since 2008, the current line-up of drummer Jonny Finnegan, lead vocalist John "Gaoler" Sterry and bassist Thomas McNeice more than capably fill the very large shoes of their musical forefathers. This ain't no tribute act; these guys are professionals and they have excellent chemistry with Gill. What I love most about Gang of Four's music is the funky groove of bass and drum - listen to any of those early singles like "Not Great Men" and "Damaged Goods" and try not shaking your head or wiggling your hips.

Finnegan and McNeice brought those sexy, vibrant rhythms to life; McNeice especially, who was playfully thrusting his hips towards the crowd (even members of band aren't immune it!) Sterry was working insanely hard, racing between all three mics when he wasn't straddling the speakers near the lip of the stage.

The most mesmerizing presence, of course, was Gill who, at the beginning of the set, strolled out on stage and proceeded to hammer at his guitar. The result was a fuzzy, squealing feedback, a sound that did not seem to please Gill all that much as he chucked the guitar to the ground. He grabbed it and threw it down for a second time as his bandmates took to the stage beside him.

The band then launched into the drone-y "Anthrax" and the next 50-some-odd minutes were a wet dream of hits: "At Home He's a Tourist" and "Natural's Not in It" from the band's much hailed 1979 debut Entertainment!, the sarcastic military kiss-off "I Love a Man in Uniform" from 1982's Songs of the Free (check out the 2005 re-recorded version of this featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O) and new gems from last year's What Happens Next (2015). Though Gill had a stare that could send you to an early grave (maybe he was just concentrating really hard?), he could raise the dead with that needling guitar sound.

Before the First Avenue crowd could catch their breath, Omaha-natives The Faint landed on stage and turned the humble club's innards into a freaky rave-up complete with trippy visuals, seizure-inducing strobe lights and one hell of an energetic performance from the band themselves.

Being that this was the first date on their North American tour and also on the heels of the digital release of their career-spanning compilation CAPSULE:1999-2016 (physical copies of the album will be released on Saddle Creek October 28th), the foursome (Clark Baechle, Jacob Thiele, Dapose, and Todd Fink) were in top form and sharply dressed to boot (Fink's hat deserves its own spotlight).

The setlist had a healthy selection of fan favorites: "Worked Up So Sexual" from 1999's Blank-Wave Arcade, "Agenda Suicide", "The Conductor" and encore tracks "Let the Poison Spill Down Your Throat" and "Glass Danse" all from their breakout 2001 record Danse Macabre and plenty from the follow-up Wet From Birth including opener "Southern Belles in London Sing" and "Desperate Guys." But it was wicked new single "Skylab1979" that turned a transfixed audience into a good old-fashioned mosh-pit.

To me, the Faint are the musical equivalent of hanging yourself upside down and letting all the blood rush to your head; the warm, sparkly disorientation that follows is exactly what I felt listening to Danse Macabre all those years ago. Now, 15 years later, this great band can still give me that tingly sensation.

All-girls band Warpaint (guitarist Emily Kokal, bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg, drummer Stella Mozgawa, and guitarist Theresa Wayman ... all takes turn on vocals) has reunited earlier this year to record their new album Heads Up.

I believe we caught their very first Minneapolis appearance in 2009, when I noted that “I actually quite enjoyed Warpaint, who wowed me with their melodic music as all three girls took turns singing their part. They seem like a lot of fun, and they seem really happy that a lot of people showed up early to see them play.”

As of this writing, no opening band is listed.

Post-punk band Gang of Four recently played the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis last Thursday, March 12th.

Opening up the show was New York's Public Access T.V. (not to be confused with the English band Public Service Broadcasting), who played a set of straightforward rock and roll. You may recall that we talked about this band and mentioned that PAT included former Be Your Own Pet and Virgins' drummer John Eatherly on our Road to SXSW 2015 podcast. We all liked BYOP and Virgins, so naturally we like what he is doing with PAT.

The band is really new, they have only released an EP called Rebounder and a 7" In the Mirror (Rough Trades), so basically they played all of those songs, including new single "Metropolis" and last single "In The Mirror".

Leeds' Gang of Four has been around since the late 70s, and since then we've seen the band change from punk rock to a dance-punk... but always with a social and political angle.

The band broke up in the late 90s, but reformed with the original lineup (singer Jon King, guitarist Andy Gill, bassist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham) for a brief two year period of 2004-2006. As of 2013, only the original guitarist, Andy Gill is in the band. Can he carry on the name, even as a 'gang of one'? Sure, much like how we are still celebrating bands like Smashing Pumpkins, The Fall, Soul Asylum, and Guns N' Roses... we still love the old stuff and we'll continue to support their new material.

If I were to compare this to a successful movie and its remake/reboot/sequel. Even if the second film is bad, you'll still have the original.... however, sometime the sequel may be just as good or better than the original.

In an interview with The Skinny, he explained it, "I think sometimes his enthusiasm was not there, perhaps sometimes – you can tell I’m carefully choosing my words here! – the lack of enthusiasm didn’t help the creative process. I think, from that point onwards I knew I wanted to make another record and embrace those opportunities very enthusiastically. I felt a number of doors had opened up."

The opportunities that Gill referenced was the ability to finally open up the singing duties to various guest stars, such as Alison Mosshart from The Kills, Robbie Furze from The Big Pink, Gail Ann Dorsey, German superstar Herbert Grönemeyer and Japanese superstar Hotei.

When it came down to it, I would rather hear a band excited about writing and recording new music than dispassionate creators.

So with a fresh lineup (singer John "Gaoler" Sterry, bassist Thomas McNeice, and drummer Jonny Finnegan) for this 2015 tour, Gang of Four begs the question "What Happens Next"?

Of the new band, I think they are good. The rarely-spoken Gaoler had a totally blank look, in true punk/goth fashion, like he is permanently depressed... but once in a while you can catch his true self breaking through, with a smile. Gaoler danced to and fro, utilized all three mics throughout their set.

Drumming was also excellent, especially on the faster-paced songs, but my favorite was the bass. McNeice's bass came in loud and clear, and I was surprise how much 'funk' Gang of Four were in the final mix.

I think because of all the guest stars on the latest What Happens Next record, they may have decided to only play a few tracks from the album, including "Where the Nightingale Sings", "Stranded", and "Isle of Dogs".

With a 36+ year music history, Gill and company had their pick of songs, choosing to play their popular songs like the notorious "Anthrax", "At Home He's a Tourist" (major label EMI debut single), and the controversial "I Love a Man in a Uniform" (banned by the BBC during the Falklands War).

Setlist

The encore started with "Why Theory?", which we see Gaoler playing the melodica and maraca. During "I Love a Man in Uniform", bassist McNeice had backup vocal duties - however his mic stand was compromised by Gaoler earlier and he couldn't sing into the mic. No problem, McNeice, a veteran to this by now, knocked the mic off the stand (with a 'thud' sound) to get the attention of the guitar technician/stage hand. He quickly runs on the stage and immediate rectify the situation. Just from that interaction, I can tell that this was a tight touring unit.

Also, as you can see from their setlist photo, they only listed three songs - however, there was a bonus, fourth song, "I Found That Essence Rare". I believe this was meant for a double encore, but the band just chose to continue to play after "Return the Gift".

So what happens next? They're touring towards SXSW 2015 this year and will end their US show at the Burgerama show in Santa Ana. Gang of Four's latest What Happens Next is out now on Metropolis Records, be sure to catch the gang on this rare US appearance.

Adam Bainbridge, aka Kindness, will be playing the Triple Rock Social Club this March 10th. The last time I heard from him, he remixed Röyksopp & Robyn's "Monument", so Kindness can also be more in the funk/DJ/producer area.

New Orleans' Jared Pellerin, or otherwise known as his stagename, Pell, is set to open the show. Pell is currently on tour in support of his debut album Floating While Dreaming.

Regarding the cover artwork, Pell said, "There's a lot that I could say about Floating While Dreaming, but the most important thing I want people to know is that it comes from the heart. Music is my passion and it feels great for me to be able to share my insight on life and what it has given me so far. The album is for the people out there chasing their dreams and aspirations that remain unconquered. Keep believing, and keep dreaming."

Meanwhile, Tom Petty tribute band Free Fallin will be playing Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill.

If you grew up in the 90s, you will recall their ever creepy music videos on MTV. For the 21st Anniversary of Betty, the band will be playing the entire album on this tour.... but be sure to stay until the encore, as they promised as an extended set (with likely all the fan favorite songs).

The last time we saw this inventive live band, I mentioned that of Montreal will be releasing Aureate Gloom (Polyvinyl Records). Now that it's getting a little closer to its release date (March 3, 2015), I'm happy to unveil their cover artwork, as well talk about their upcoming tour in support of the new album. of Montreal was one of my favorite live bands, so you definitely need to see them if you have not experienced them live.

The Aureate Gloom tour will take the Athens-based band from the southeast to SXSW in Austin, and then westward bound.... and then back again to Austin in April!

Not to be confused with Canadian band Wand or Denmark's The Wands or Japanese rock band Wands or Wooden Wand (aka Wand), this the Los Angeles-based band Wand. We've previously mentioned them briefly when they toured with Ty Segall last year (2014).

Wand is back, this time touring through and around SXSW 2015, in support of their upcoming 2015 album Golem (available March 17th, 2015 on In the Red Records).
