Esmé Patterson is back in Minneapolis, touring in support of her new album We Were Wild (Grand Jury).

We previously caught her with San Fermin earlier in April 2016 and wrote, “Not all the songs were new, about half her set was taken from her concept album Woman to Woman, which was about her response to famous women in songs. For example, the song “Never Chase a Man” is about her response to Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” and “Bluebird” was her response to The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby”.”

Athens’ New Madrid is touring in support of their third album magnetkingmagnetqueen (Normaltown Records). We previously caught the band (singer/guitarist Phil McGill, guitarist Graham Powers, bassist Ben Hackett, and drummer Alex Woolley) in December 2015 and noted, “New Madrid seemed to lean more towards the psychedelic rock end of the spectrum. This four piece quietly took the stage and wowed the audience with their vocal harmonies that were good enough to give you goosebumps.”

Pop orchestra group San Fermin recently headlined the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis on Thursday, April 7th. When they originally booked the venue, they asked for a seated show. However, when they arrived, they decided they needed an open dance floor - so the result was an oddly partially open/partially seated show.

At first the open dance floor was completely empty when Esmé Patterson (with Felipe on guitars, Alex on drums, and Jeremy on bass) took the stage. Then slowly, as she started to play, the floor started to fill up with young fans. Patterson said that she was actually experimenting on us, as her new album We Were Wild was actually not out yet (set for release June 10th on Grand Jury Music).

Patterson was quite talkative, and almost described what the song “Francine” was about. However, she said it was too early and she wasn’t drunk enough to go into details about the song.

Not all the songs were new, about half her set was taken from her concept album Woman to Woman, which was about her response to famous women in songs. For example, the song “Never Chase a Man” is about her response to Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” and “Bluebird” was her response to The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby”.

Brooklyn’s San Fermin is in a unique place. The rather large group (singer Allen Tate, singer Charlene Kaye, violinist Rebekah Durham, trumpeter John Brandon, saxophonist Stephen Chen, keys Ellis Ludwig-Leone, guitarist Tyler McDiarmid, and drummer Michael Hanf) is currently between their latest Jackrabbit (which came out in 2015) and working on new materials for a forthcoming album. The tour served as a preview for new songs, testing out arrangements and performances. It seemed like the band really worked hard on these new songs, as it sounded really well rehearsed.

Since was last saw San Fermin in in 2014, their co-lead singer Rae Cassidy left the group to focus on her solo career. Charlene Kaye stepped in to replace Cassidy. Kaye’s singing style is a lot more pop vs her male counterpart Allen Tate, who sounded moodier and dark. Tate has a low baritone sound, so fans of the Divine Comedy and The National will want to hear more.

Personal highlight of their set was for “Sonsick” when I heard the dedicated audience singing back and finishing its chorus. This was followed by some great trumpet solo from John Brandon.

The next time San Fermin tour, it will be in support of their forthcoming 2016 album. Based on hearing it live, it sounded like they’ve been living with these new songs for a long time now. The same for Esmé Patterson, who we are expecting to do a proper tour in support of her We Were Wild album, once it’s released, later this year.

I have been meaning to check out Brooklyn’s Prince Rama for a long time now... but every time they’re in town, I have had other commitments (they were previously in town with Dan Deacon in May 2015). They’re known for their great live performances, dressing up, and looking fab.

The sisters (Taraka and Nimai Larson) has a new album called Xtreme Now (Carpark Records) and it was inspired by a near-death experience Taraka underwent at an ancient Viking ruin on the Estonian island of Vormsi.

Ra Ra Riot is back in town at the Triple Rock Social Club this April 7th, in support of their fourth LP Need Your Light (Barsuk Records). The record came out in February but already Harper’s Bazaar announced that album as one of ten albums “you need to listen to in February.”

In addition to promoting the new album, they’re also promoting Oxfam America and their efforts to help end hunger and poverty.

“Western Mass. indie scene’s brightest” And the Kids to open with New York’s PWR BTTM (Power Bottom?). PWR BTTM was previously in town in November 2015 with Mitski.

California’s Audacity (not to be confused with the free audio editor) was previously known as Nontoxic, The Plaid, and The Attachments. The garage (or rather basement)/feel good/sloppy, but easy Cali style or Burger-type band will be at the Hexagon Bar in Minneapolis this Thursday, April 7th. Although the venue does not have listing information, I believe all the shows are free and starts at 9pm.

Audacity’s new album Hyper Vessels is out now on Suicide Squeeze Records. Vinyl collectors will want to look at their limited run (500 each) on green marble vinyl. All vinyl copies include download cards.

Oxford, UK band A Silent Film is back with a new self-titled, full-length studio album out just last week on +180 Records and featuring new single "Lightning Strike".

Living up to their name, the band is known for their widescreen sound, sweeping choruses and synth anthemic hooks. After a series of intimate 'in-the-round' performances called the Secret Rooms tour, opening bigger gigs and playing summer festivals, their intimate club gigs are a great way to experience the band live. We previously caught the band on their first-ever Minneapolis appearance in 2013 and noted that singer Robert Stevenson was so pleased with their fan attendance that he declared, "That's it, we're coming back!!"

Charlotte, NC band Flagship opens the show, with their own blend of dreamy orchestral indie-pop that sounds bigger than the sum of their parts. We caught the band last year and noted that singer Drake Margolnick sounded like like Thom Yorke.

The co-headlining Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness and New Politics show will be arriving in Minneapolis next Monday, 10/26, at First Avenue. We previously caught Denmark's New Politics at the Go Show #1 in March 2015 and was basically blown away at their live showmanship.

The Journeys-sponsored tour will also feature Australia's The Griswolds (who just headlined in June 2015) and American singer-songwriter and actress Lolo (aka Lauren Pritchard).

What is unique about Lolo's inclusion in this tour is that she's the only woman on this all-men band tour. Show up early to check out why HillyDilly.com wrote, "the most gut-wrenchingly good, heart-piercing vocals you've ever heard."

Lolo's latest EP Comeback Queen is out now.
