They even played “Dog”, which was clearly not written on their setlist ...

Chicago’s Dehd is headlining the Fine Line, in Minneapolis, on November 11, 2024. The band’s latest Poetry is out now on Fat Possum Records.

Dehd at Granada Theater (15 Nov 2021)

We saw Dedh in Nov 2021 and said, “The evening began with a crowd-impressing fifteen song/forty-three minute set from Chicago trio Dehd (pronounced “dead”) who blend surf rock, dream pop, and shoegaze into a palette that is both retro and modern. Emily Kempf- vocals/guitar, Jason Balla- guitar/vocals and Eric McGrady- stand-up percussion make up in the band, who are out in support of last year’s third studio album, Flower of Devotion (on Fire Talk Records). Singer Kempf laughingly remarked between songs that her in-ear monitors resembled earpieces worn by the FBI, guitarist Balla never stood still, often lithely slithering about his corner of the stage while waving his bright green guitar, while drummer McGrady stood in the middle of things, mostly nonplussed but able to anchor all songs with a seemingly simple post-punk rhythm. The band was generally well-received by a crowd that were mostly unaware of them prior, and their merch booth was crowded between sets, which is always a good sign.”

Gustaf to open. We accidentally caught Gustaf at Palace Theatre in Oct 2021 and was simply blown away. We loved their songs, we love their attitude, and we love their show, simply put, “Their music is described as ESG meets Jonathan Richman… and you can hear it: they got that rhythmic “dance dance dance” sound with Richman’s humorous story-songs.”

We saw Blitzen Trapper in Oct 2015 said, “Blitzen Trapper were the headliners last night. I had heard a little bit of these guys before last night but it was always just background music for me. It's a bit too calm for my liking. That being said, they completely blew me away last night. Blitzen Trapper is a five piece alternative country band from Portland, Oregon. These guys have been around for quite some time. Their first studio album came out in 2003 and they have released seven more since then. Their newest album All Across This Land came out just a couple of days ago so they seemed to focus on playing songs from that album with a few older songs thrown in.”

Minnesota’s supergroup Golden Smog (featuring Gary Louris, Kraig Johnson, Dan Murphy, Marc Perlman, and Steve Gorman) is back for a special one-night appearance at First Avenue on November 15, 2024.

Since you already know all the names, you know that each band member is an accomplished musician, and they’re usually pretty busy going on tour or making public appearances. Once in a while, the band will get together, so it’s a special event, for sure.

Please note that “new guy” Jeff Tweedy will not be joining the band for this event.

We caught the band in May 2016 and wrote, “The night started with two opening bands- The Carnegies featuring the Mars brothers (Royce on drums, and Roman on bass) and Taylor Tolle on the guitar who played retro-fueled blues/psych rock and Eleganza!, a three-guitar super group of sorts with Brian Vanderwerf and Jeff Johnson of Chooglin’ , ex-Ol’ Yeller’s Greg McAloon, and Romantica’s Tony Zaccardi (who also fronts a Guns n’ Roses tribute band).”

Golden Smog, America's favorite Stupergroup, is pleased to announce that Gary Louris, Kraig Johnson, Dan Murphy, Marc Perlman and Steve Gorman (the latest in a long line of Smog drummers dating back to Dave Pirner) will be appearing for one night only on Friday, November 15 at First Avenue & 7th St Entry, the scene of so many great Golden Smog and Golden Smog-related shows over the last 4 decades. In other words, home. Eleganza will be opening.

In lieu of any new music, the current mode for Golden Smog is to play when circumstances allow, whether it's a year between shows or a decade. For this year's show the plan - and, yes, there is a plan - is to invoke the spirit of early GS, when fun with a capital F was the driving force. So expect lots of stuff from the 1996-2006 "Major Label" era but also a healthy dose of old faves from the 1988-1993 "What The Hell Are We Doing" era, when the goal was to not be the worst cover band in town....and have fun, did we mention that?

Tickets go on sale to the public on Friday, October 18 at 10 am CT but there will be an exclusive artist presale this Wednesday, October 16 at 10am CT. Presale code is KEYS

We saw Tycho in March 2015 said, “Scott Hansen, or probably better known as Tycho is back in Minneapolis. The band was recently in Minneapolis last April 2014, promoting Awake, which Hansen described as "the first true Tycho record." According to Hansen regarding the April 2014 show, "almost didn't happen!" He didn't go into details about "crazy story" on stage, but I suspect it was likely due to transportation issues. In fact, Hansen rarely spoke at all, instead letting his music speak for him.”

We saw La Femme in June 2022 and said, “The band is fun, often interacting with the fans, and would invite guests to come on stage. In fact, opening band Trance Farmers, was invited back on stage to help them close out their finale song, “Tatiana”. It’s hard to believe that legendary singer/songwriter Paul Simon is retiring from live shows with this “Homeward Bound - the Farewell Tour”.

Simon, commenting on his farewell tour said, “I’ve often wondered what it would feel like to reach the point where I'd consider bringing my performing career to a natural end. Now I know: it feels a little unsettling, a touch exhilarating and something of a relief. I love making music, my voice is still strong, and my band is a tight, extraordinary group of gifted musicians. I think about music constantly. I am very grateful for a fulfilling career and, of course, most of all to the audiences who heard something in my music that touched their hearts.”

The band recently released a new single called ‘We Were Beautiful’, written in 2016, but finally officially released on digital format only. I won’t buy digital, and full confession: I own everything B&S released on Jeepster and Matador Records. I prefer seeing them sit on my book shelf.

What a great lineup for this so-called “Retro Futura Tour”! We love all these bands, having seen many of them throughout the years.

However, if you’re not familiar with these guys, I’ll summarize them:

We previously saw Katrina (from Katrina and the Waves) in April 2015 and wrote, “For her set, which just ran over an hour, Leskanich and band played many of her 80s favorites as well as introduced most of the mostly baby boomer-aged crowd, to some of her newer solo material. The NYC backing threesome brought a rough and gritty feel to the music, though thankfully most of the older Katrina and the Waves favorites were done as authentically as possible, instead of re-interpreted.”

English songwriter Paul Young is famous for his single ‘Love of the Common People’ and ‘Everything Must Change’.

New wave Modern English had a huge hit with ‘I Melt With You’ (you may have heard it on a Burger King commercial, sadly).

Most people will know Men Without Hats as the band that sang ‘The Safety Dance’. We love them so much, we flew to Canada to see them play at SXSW 2011.

Co-headliner is the legendary ska/punk band The English Beat... They actually have a new album (in over three decades!) called Here We Go Love. Rolling Stone called the new record “savagely witty as Elvis Costello”.

Closing the show will be Howard Jones. I may have mentioned that he’s known for ‘What Is Love?’, but was quickly reminded that he’s known for ‘Things Can Only Get Better’.

The best thing about the music scene here in the Twin Cities? No matter what's going on around us, there is always a place where you can escape to. You will be surrounded by friends and strangers. There will be no violence, no drama, just music and the feeling you get from being at a live show. Sunday night was no different.

Doomtree played a free show yesterday at Sociable Cider Werks in Saint Paul. It was a day full of friends, music, cider and gorgeous weather. It was a perfect getaway from the craziness of the world we live in.

ZuluZuluu was the sole opener for the show. Their music was very chill and soothing. People seemed to enjoy it as they all crowded into the few shady areas to escape the heat. The music was very ambient at times but at other times had very complex rhythms and sounds.

After an hour long set, it was time for Doomtree to set up. I glanced around the parking and realized just how many people had come out to the event. There were all kinds of people there. Like many of the free festivals that happen here in the cities, there was a good mix of people who were there for the music and people who probably just lived in the area and wanted to see what was going on.

Doomtree started with a couple of new songs but quickly moved into a medley of about five old songs that the crowd went crazy over. Their whole set was full of just Doomtree songs which was a bit different than the previous times I have seen them.

Let me break it down Doomtree for you, they are a hip-hop collective of seven individuals (Cecil Otter, Dessa, Lazerbeak, Mike Mictlan, Paper Tiger, P.O.S and Sims), each member has a solo or side project that they work on when Doomtree isn't active (although it seems like they're always active). The previous times I have seen them each member performs one of their own songs while the other members hang in the background. Last night was the first time I have seen them when each song was a Doomtree song... there were no Dessa songs, no Sims songs... just Doomtree and it was truly a show of just how much talent this group has.

Doomtree took 30 seconds of silence to honor the fallen and the recent events. The crowd respected those 30 seconds and took the time to do what they felt needed to be done whether it was pray, take a sip of beer, stare at the ground in order in keep your balance... whatever. It was respectful and it was a much needed 30 seconds of silence. The members of Doomtree didn't force an opinion on the crowd, hell they didn't even bring up on specific event. It was the most beautiful 30 seconds of the night.

The show ended with one last hoorah as Doomtree sang their hit song ‘Bangarang’. I had noticed Har Mar Superstar walking around the crowd earlier in the night so it was no surprise to see him on stage with Doomtree as they all danced like fools. It was a perfect ending to a perfect afternoon.

The show was the first part of Sociable Cider Werk’s Summer Concert series. They will be hosting one show each month this summer. The next show’s announced will be Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires (with 4ontheFloor and Eleganza) on August 21st. Good music can often be like a good gumbo stew—

Combine various ingredients of all kinds, add additional spices and seasonings, then let simmer.  Shreveport, LA band Seratones was recently in town on the very day their debut album, Get Gone (on Fat Possum Records) was released, and the results were very similar.

The quartet (AJ Haynes –vocals/guitar, Connor Davis-guitar, Adam Davis-bass, and Jesse Gabriel-drums) has been gradually gaining buzz- Winning a Louisiana Music Golden Microphone prize in 2013, getting notice from Paste and NME and showcasing at this year’s SXSW Festival in Austin, TX.

Though sometimes compared to Alabama Shakes, the band is purposely more rough around the edges, and adds more of a garage punk/blues trait to their music, for the comparisons to run too deep.

Eleganza!

The night started with two opening bands- The Carnegies featuring the Mars brothers (Royce on drums, and Roman on bass) and Taylor Tolle on the guitar who played retro-fueled blues/psych rock and Eleganza!, a three-guitar super group of sorts with Brian Vanderwerf and Jeff Johnson of Chooglin’ , ex-Ol’ Yeller’s Greg McAloon, and Romantica’s Tony Zaccardi (who also fronts a Guns n’ Roses tribute band).

Seratones

Playing almost exactly an hour, Seratones fired up with the opening track from Get Gone, ‘Choking On Your Spit’, a crunchy number that evokes driving a classic Dodge Challenger on a back road, letting the accelerator lead you. Gears changed with the more soulful ‘Don’t Need It’ , then went more straight-ahead rock ‘n roll with early single, ‘Necromancer’.

‘Get Gone’ was a foot-stomping burner with Haynes’ voice going from gravel lows to searing highs and ‘Kingdom Come’ found Davis’ guitar emoting rock riffage over Gabriel’s scat-jazz drums  with Haynes’ siren voice ending the song with “I'll leave you bound and reeling, but I'll be your best, believe me”.

A revved up soul version of Neil Young’s ‘Walk On’ was brilliantly melded with the gospelized ‘People Get Ready’ and a stark and solo Haynes version of Prince’s The Beautiful Ones’ proved an apt tribute.

Setlist

The set then went into overdrive as Haynes jumped into the audience for their own ‘Take it Easy’ and the Mc5’s “Kick out the Jams’, amidst heads bobbing, spastic dancing, and people playing air guitar, for an electric ending to their main set.

After instructing the crowd to say “hey man”  back to the band after every verse, the band ripped into a garage, chugging ‘Suffragette City’, effectively paying homage to the other rock legend lost this year to end the evening.

Like the gumbo, Seratones took a little time to fully flourish and marinate, but once it did, it was a very satisfying taste of this Shreveport band that has a bright future ahead. Getting Gone should always be so right.

Brooklyn's Sufjan Stevens is back on tour, in support of his latest album Carrie & Lowell. Nashville's Bobby Bare Jr will be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul on Thursday, January 8th. Bare, Jr., is the son of singer Jeannie Sterling and country musician Bobby Bare, Sr.

Opening up the show will be Sam Cassidy (named "Best New Band of 2014", according to First Avenue) and Eleganza, featuring Brian Vanderwerf.

We previously caught local Afro-Cuban band Malamanya when they opened up for Los Amigos Invisibles in 2013.

We described the show as: "Opening up for Los Amigos Invisibles was local Spanish band Malamanya. They spoke fluent English between songs, but I believe most their songs were sung in Spanish (with the exception of "Red Light Morning"). Songs played, according to their setlist, were: "Deuda", "El Malo", "Red Light Morning", "Viento", "Oriente", "Amore Perdido", "Mi Son Cubano", "Lagrimas Neegas", "Temperatura", and "Rumba"."

Expect, more or less, those same Spanish songs on their upcoming show.

Opening up for the Cedar show will be local talent Alma Andina, described as a group, directed by Vladimir Garrido, and performs Andean and Latin American music.

By the numbers: eight albums, three million records sold worldwide, and countless nights on the road... sooner or later, Rusted Root, will be stopping in town.

The Pittsburgh band is back in Minneapolis this January 10th, as part of their 25th anniversary as a band. I believe the last time the band did a headline show was here was in 2011 at the Cabooze.... these guys typically feel at home when they play at Bonnaroo, moedown, Summerfest, etc.

Two-piece psych punk band The Hussy (featuring Heather and Bobby Hussy) will be out on a quickie tour in support of their new EZ/PZ 7" (available in limited pink/white vinyl and black vinyl). If you are a fan of Jay Reatard and Burger Records/cassette culture, then you'll love the DIY spirit and sound of the Hussy. I already know a few people going to this show, it should be a fun night out.
