The multi-genre ensemble DeVotchKa return today with the release of their new full-length album This Night Falls Forever, available now on Concord Records. As part of the release, the band has shared a video for the nostalgic first single "Straight Shot". Watch the video here. The album also includes the "high-octane" (Gary Graff, Billboard) track "Angels" as well as "Empty Vessels" which premiered earlier this week on Consequence of Sound, who described the song as "sturdy even as it tumbles through endless spirals of orchestration like a dream through the early breaking daylight."

After scoring Films, TV, Musicals, Ballets, and performing with symphony orchestra's, Devotchka emerge from the studio with their sixth full-length album, which includes 11 songs that defy categorization. These tracks straddle the line between the epic and the intimate. Devotchka has garnered much praise and attention for blurring the lines of genre and cultural influence, and with this release they have clearly carved their own unique space in the modern musical landscape. Frontman Nick Urata's soaring vocal croon and poetic lyrics are back in full force. His voice travels atop ambitious film noir orchestras and live vintage vodoo rock combos.

It all started following the end of DeVotchKa's 2012 tour, when Urata was left feeling conflicted. On one hand, the band was as popular as ever, playing their critically-acclaimed songs to fans at sold-out shows around the globe, and he was enjoying a burgeoning career as a film score composer, with a GRAMMY nomination already under his belt for the film Little Miss Sunshine. However, on the night of DeVotchKa's final show of the tour, onstage in an enormous arena in Mexico, Urata belted out the first few lines only to discover his microphone powered off-a simple mistake, but one that would later cause him to reflect deeply on his stake in life.

"You try not to make a big deal out of it, but you don't recover from that for the rest of the show," Urata says, now smiling at the memory. "It happened more than once on that tour. I was realizing how nearly anyone can sing, almost everybody has the ability, but if you want to perform for people, then you have to fight for it."

Christmas time is almost here, so I've been getting a lot of xmas emails lately. If you recall, I started writing about Christmas releases in November (that's because they have to get the product in stores for Black Friday).

Anyway, as usual, I get so much Christmas-related music that I can't really mention them all.

Lara previously mentioned how her favorite Christmas album was from Mariah Carey.

So, Carey's Christmas album, Merry Christmas II You, the follow-up to her 1994 Merry Christmas, was released in 2010. Carey decided to re-release Merry Christmas II You this year - as far as I can see, the track listing is the same as the 2010 version. There doesn't seem to be anything new/different in this new version.

The only thing I can think of the re-issue is for the benefit of the Australian audience… where she is playing a few dates.

Fans of "Glee" should pick up the new Christmas album, hitting stores today (December 11th). The incredibly popular musical television series selling strong - both on the physical CD and digital downloads.

The new album is entitled, Glee: The Music, The Christmas Album Volume 3 and should be in most retail stores (including a massive Target section). The album will contain four new songs, recorded exclusively for this album: "Joy To The World", "Silent Night", "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and "Happy Xmas."

CHRISTMAS IN THE SMOKIES

Kicking off tomorrow and continues to December 15th is "Christmas In The Smokies: Bluegrass Festival Announces 2012 Festival."

Bluegrass is not my scene, so looking over their flyer, I didn't really know any of the bands involved. It seems like it's targeted to families and good times.

The Annual Christmas in the Smokies will feature 15 talented artist including: Carolina Road, Your Host Band; Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Marty Raybon, Goldwing Express, Ralph Stanley II, Bobby Osborne & Rocky Top X-Press, Gary Waldrep Band, Jerry Butler & The Blu-J's, Remington, Ryde, Bluegrass Mountaineers, The Larkins, Reno Tradition, Mountain Faith, Hart Brothers and Bluegrass Gentleman.

INVISIBLE CHILDREN HOLIDAY BENEFIT SHOW

Invisible Children announced their Holiday Benefit show at Los Angeles' Troubadour with help from 89.9 KCRW and Chop Shop Music. The show will take place December 15th.

The main band on the bill is DeVotchKa (with a 7-Piece String Ensemble) with White Arrows, The Colourist, Whispertown and more. Not all the guests have been announced.

The proceeds from this year's show go to Invisible Children's holiday campaign, Come Home For the Holidays, an effort to increase HF radio coverage and defection fliers that will encourage LRA combatants to lay down their weapons and return home.

The first 50 people through the door will receive a limited edition show poster designed by Jon Contino (if you are a later arriver, the posters will also be available for purchase at the show.)

Tickets for the show are $25 and can be purchased at the Troubadour's website.

For my Media II class last semester. The assignment was to make an electronic book, but also to present it in some form. I chose to do an accordion book, when you ribbon is untied, the box pops open to reveal the accordion pages.

The first one is that Joe Jackson is releasing a new album, Rain, with a DVD:

Joe Jackson, first studio album in four years, “Rain”, released in Europe on January 28th (January 29th in North America), will now be released by Rykodisc as a two-disc set, including a bonus DVD directed and produced by Julie Gardner, the recording engineer who recorded Joe’s last two studio albums. Moby is appearing on The Current TV.

Tune into Current TV's "The Daily Fix" this December to catch the first of two episodes featuring singer/songwriter Moby. Serving as a guest host alongside Douglas Caballero, "The Daily Fix's" resident host, Moby talks about creating the musical score of the recently released film Southland Tales. Directed by Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko), this apocalyptic film features Justin Timberlake, Mandy Moore, The Rock and Sarah Michelle Gellar. The second installment of Moby's co-hosting gig on "The Daily Fix" will feature an interview with the up-and-coming Swedish house band, "The Knife."

Yes, as with everything else I write about here, I latched onto DeVotchKa a bit late.  Heck, I even saw Little Miss Sunshine way too late, barely catching it on DVD a month before the Oscars.  So when I heard them on the soundtrack and found a sound that I liked, I decided to do the prerequisite research into them, and liked what I found...

I'm a sucker for strings.  There's a bunch of songs that just make me shiver when I hear those parts.  You stick some violins or violas or cellos in the back of a song, and it just connects with me in a way I can't quite explain. This track is quite full of them, and really build the song up and make it more epic than the original.  It's a cover of a Siouxsie and the Banshees song, but I do have to be honest and say that I like this version better.  I have a theory about cover songs: you tend to favour the one that you hear first, even if the original is superior (which should always be the case, but not always so).  I was suprised to hear many 80s songs I liked to actually be remakes of obscure 60s songs, especially since you never ever hear the originals except when cool DJs in the clubs dig them out. 

To be fair to those Siouxsie fans, I think their version of Dear Prudence is superior to the (gasp!) Beatles.  Let the music experts shoot me down... 

Can anyone tell me why they write their name with all the weird capital letters?
