We saw Kushner in Sep 2023, and wrote, “David Kushner is having a moment right now. One that involves being strapped to a rocket of a hit single “Daylight” and launching into the stratosphere of fandom. Just to enter the Varsity Theater involved getting in a line that almost circumvented the Dinkytown block. The mood of the young crowd inside was palpable as they sang along to d4vd’s “Here With Me” while the stage was being set. And when it was go time, the screaming was on a level that I have never quite experienced. It was loud, it was sustained and it was louder than the actual music.”

We saw Rosie in Jun 2023, and said, “Closing out the night was Rosie … on her “Healing” Tour. Before we can get to the ‘healing’ part, Rosie played a few sad songs, including “Sad Sad Sad” and “Social Stamina”. As the set hit the mid-way mark with a cover of Coldplay’s “Fix You”, Rosie shifts to “LLYM” (which stands for “lie like you love me”)… a song sung in Spanish and English. She ended her set with another set of sad songs, “Never the 1” and “Someone You Once Had.””

What’s neat about writing for We Heart Music is to see fans of all ages at shows. In fact, the age gap between the audience at the Varsity Theater to see David Kushner on September 21^st and Veronica Swift at the Dakota the night after is almost three generations. And although the crowd at the Dakota was a little greyer, they were no less enthusiastic in their applause for they were treated to an eclectic, dynamic show from a performer not yet thirty.

Although Veronica Swift is 29 she already has twenty years of music experience, releasing her first album Veronica’s House of Jazz at the tender age of nine. A child prodigy of two parents/musicians, Swift learned early on the ins and outs of not only how to perform but how to present it.

“I’m so F-ING happy to be here,” she proclaimed, wearing an outfit more suited for Las Vegas than the Metropolitan. She was excited to be on the road and with her new band and to play music that she had always wanted to feature. She called her band the “Trans Genre Band” and they had joined her to promote her new self-titled album which has everything from French and Italian opera to industrial rock, funk and so much more. For example she re-imagined Trent Reznor’s “Closer” as a James Brown funk-fest. She buttressed Judy Garland’s “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows” with Fredric Chopin piano flourishes.

Swift didn’t have to go this route. She was well on her way to becoming part of jazz royalty. Her first gig out of college was at The Birdland in NYC. (Not easy to do.) She’s toured with Benny Green and played with Wynton Marsalis. Downbeat gave her previous album This Bitter Earth five stars. Chris once Botti said, “She’s a throwback to something that does not exist in popular culture. And I’m talking about Anita O’Day and Billy Holiday.”

Yes, she could have a comfortable career in concert halls and jazz clubs singing the jazz standards in a satin gown, but there’s a plucky, insatiable spirit which she put on full display with Jefferson Airplane’s hallucinating “White Rabbit” which started far-off and distant, slow-moving like a train of camels, then building into an epic finish before collapsing.

Two personal favorites: “Room with a View” an original song she wrote about moving into her new LA home. It started out as a peppy, bouncy 60’s pop song before moving into full-tilt 70’s arena rock. Then “In the Moonlight” a song based on Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” that somehow ended up turning into a Broadway musical finale.

Joining Swift on this new musical odyssey is Brian Viglione of the Dresden Dolls. He helped produce the new album and was on drums. Swift could not be any more effusive on what it meant to have him on tour and what the Dresden Dolls meant to her growing up. And as a thank you she finished the evening with “Sing” from the Dresden Dolls’ Yes, Virginia.

“Is this where the parents sit?”

It was a fair question. I was in the upper level of Varsity Theater, sitting on one of the comfortable sofas when a woman sat down next to me with a beer in hand. She was from Bismarck, ND, she drove her teenage daughter and some of her daughter’s friends to the Minneapolis show.

She wasn’t the only one to make a long distance commitment. Outside I met a mother from Duluth, MN and inside a grandmother from Madison, SD. The reason for the chaperones was the average makeup of the audience member was a teenage girl.

“I get it,” said the mother from Duluth. For her it was The New Kids on the Block. For her daughter it wasn’t a boyband with slick dance moves. It was two singer/songwriters with introspective lyrics wrapped in soulful, gospel-tinged music.

Chance Peña opened up the sold-out show. A Tyler, TX, native, he burst onto the music scene in 2015 by making coach Adam Levine’s team on season nine of The Voice as a 15-year-old prodigy. In 2020 he helped co-write John Legend’s “Conversations in the Dark” which was the lead single to the Grammy winning album Bigger Love.

He released his first EP this summer, Lovers to Strangers and played the four songs from the EP along with unreleased songs like “Cruel World,” “Thaw” and “Love You Right” which he said he wrote in three minutes with his roommate and right-hand man on stage, Wes.

Peña finished the set with two really nice songs: “I’m Not Who I Was” and “In My Room” which he wrote in his room in his parents home, which captures a moment in time that isn’t sad or pensive but fleeting.

Like Peña, Kushner’s music is thoughtful, quiet and subtle and throughout the set the crowd sang along to the lyrics if they weren’t screaming at the top of their lungs. And when Kushner said the first song he wrote “Miserable Man” was also his personal favorite, the crowd completely lost it.

It was certainly a dichotomous moment: introspective songs about death “Cigarettes” and Alzheimer’s “Mr. Forgettable” met with applause usually reserved for a K-Pop band. But I think Kushner has an understanding for the incongruity as he told Poptized:

Yeah, so like in a way that music makes me feel alive and in a way I think that’s why a lot of people relate to my music, because it makes them weirdly feel alive in a strange way that really helps them connect to me and my music and what I have to say.

Did you hear? The Walkmen have reformed, and on their first national tour in over a decade. They’ve sold out many of their dates, so they’re decided to extend their tour to the Fall: “Ok so, we are doing more shows in the fall. We truly can’t get enough. Our spring tour was such a thrill and so much better than we could have ever imagined, so we’re stretching our fall tour out a bit more. This fall we’re doing our first west coast headline shows in 10 years and also some fun ones in the midwest, including a new date in Dallas, Texas. Our favorite Japanese superhero band Peelander-Z is back in town to celebrate their 25th Anniversary of the band. They’re calling it “P-Party! Z-Party!”.

If you’ve never seen a Peelander-Z show, do yourself a favor and check them out. They are one of the most interesting looking and creative bands you’ll ever see. And when you’re at the show, I can guarantee you that you’ll be singing (and possibly playing pots or drums) with the band.

The last time we saw them in May 2015, the venue, for whatever reasons, cut their instruments off after only 25 minutes, so we never really fully experience Peelander-Z: “What the heck happened to the Peelander-Z's Official Wizard World Minneapolis After Party show at the Pourhouse last night??!!!??? After just 25 minutes, the venue cut off the band's instruments!! Everyone in the audience and the band looked incredibly puzzled by the shutdown. The fans were screaming "One more song! One more song!" and Pink replied, "If only we could, but they won't let us play!"”

New album, Medicine (Magnolia Records) came out at the beginning of the year, and the album continues to gain momentum with the band’s constant touring.”

France’s Oracle Sisters will be headlining the Turf Club in St Paul at the new date of September 22, 2023 (from May 13, 2023). The group was chosen as top 100 artists of 2019 by the NME.

Oracle Sisters, is painter and musician Lewis Lazar, with his friend Christopher Willatt and Finnish songwriter and drummer Julia Johansen. The trio’s music is a little mix of folk, rock, jazz and blues.

Sydney, Australia’s Vallis Alps (David Ansari and Parissa Tosif) is touring in support of their debut album Cleave.

Talking about the record, Vallis Alps said, “This album was made over continents, through a broken (then repaired) friendship, a pandemic, us growing and morphing as individuals and as a band. We have poured every emotion and conversation into this album - a dream of ours to always make. A thread connecting the songs on the album is the idea of being equally patient with the joy as well as the sorrow in life. Essentially, the songs live in the realm of the pursuit of contentment as opposed to happiness... We keep coming back to the idea of a botanist.
