Genre-bending soul and funk rocker Just Loud is headlining the 7th Street Entry this December 21, 2023.

We last heard from Just Loud when he went on tour in support of “Diamonds and Dope Boys” and the self-titled debut album via Five Seven Music.

Just Loud is probably best known for the funky song “Soul Train” feat. Debbie Harry of Blondie, unfortunately after 1 million views, Paramount Global blocked the video due to its copyright claims.

Waldemar is touring in support of their debut album Ruthless.

The band is named after lead singer/songwriter Gabe Larson’s grandfather, a hard-laboring Midwestern farmer.

The record took a long time, because Larson, with his brother, transformed a rundown horse barn on his property into a professional recording studio, then wrote, recorded, scrapped and rewrote the 11 songs that make up Ruthless… all this while Larson worked various manual labor jobs to support his growing family.

It’s hard work, just like Larson’s grandfather, Waldemar.

Waldemar was last seen in town in November 2019.

Black metal band Mayhem is headlining the Skyway Theatre in Minneapolis on April 2nd. The date is part of their The Sanguine Sodomy of North America Spring tour.

Mayhem’s debut album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, an album on Rolling Stone’s “The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time”, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

I am told that Watain was on the bill, but the venue’s website or the show’s poster does not list Watain. Instead Midnight (not to be confused with the band The Midnight) to open.

Acclaimed Scottish rock band We Were Promised Jetpacks will be on tour in support of their Enjoy the View (Big Scary Monsters). The tour will stop in at the Turf Club in St Paul on April 3rd, 2022.

We last caught the band in Feb 2020 and said, “After a set change, We Were Promised Jetpacks began their eighty-minute headlining set… with an apology?! “We haven’t been to Kansas City since March 20, 2012, that’s our bad… it was all the bass player’s fault!” singer/guitarist Adam Thompson started, making of light of things, but also promising the best show possible, to make things worth the long wait.”

Music-loving Casino goers were treated to a veritable jackpot of country and pop colliding as sibling group The Band Perry took to the stage at a packed Mystic Lake Showroom.

The evening began with a short set from Caitlyn Smith, a Cannon Falls, MN native who currently splits her time between locally and in Nashville, and has up to now, primarily been known as a songwriter.  But Smith has decided to embark out on her own career, and was in promotion of newest EP, Starfire, released in July on Skylark Records, which will lead to a full album in the new year.

Though she may be a new-ish performing artist, the storytelling skills of her previous songwriting (including for the likes of Garth Brooks, Rascal Flatts, and Jason Aldean) and on her own songs like ‘Do You Think About Me’ have served her well. 

 A note about the venue—the Mystic Lake Showroom is a generally well run place with exemplary sound since their renovations several years ago, with comfortable seating and good sight lines.  If you can bear the drive out to the western suburbs and find your way to the back of the casino, amidst a haze of cigarette smoke and barrage of lights and sounds from all the machines, it’s a trip worth taking.

After a break, lights dimmed, and the jangles of a mandolin against a big bass drum beat introduced The Band Perry and opening song, ‘Better Dig Two’.  The band is now signed to Interscope Records/UMG Mercury Nashville and took time out from putting the finishing touches on their follow up to 2013’s Pioneer, to head out for a handful of dates and road test some of the new singles released. 

The siblings (Kimberly Perry; Neil Perry; and Reid Perry) are no strangers to the stage (revealing they just celebrated their eighteenth year of playing live the week before) and has melded a polished hybrid of country-pop into several hit singles, presenting them in a well-paced and varied eighty-minute headlining performance.

“The crazier, the wilder, the louder… the better!” Kimberly mentioned were the only rules, this Saturday night, as the group moved from 2010’s ‘All Your Life’ from their debut album, into a more recent Justin Bieber cover, which everyone younger in the crowd, instantly recognized. 

The mid-set medley really showed their pop influences, with a mash-up of a Eurythmics ‘80s classic and two more recent radio hits, with brother Neil jumping around in his black tank top and b-boy cap, leaping from side to side, to incite the crowd. 

The new gospel-influenced ‘In It Together’ built into an anthem of unity (perfect timing given the current political climate) and was followed by the band’s initial radio song that would top the Billboard charts, 2010’s ‘If I Die Young’, which is less about being morbid and more about living in the moment. 

The new ‘Comeback Kid’ was described by Kimberly as their “most transparent lyrics of any song” and rising above the adversities they’ve faced over the last year, while the also-new ‘Stay in the Dark’ had a toe-tapping beat and clap-a-long rhythm to it. 

“We’ll always forever do this song” Kimberly said, during the middle of their cover of Queen’s ‘Fat Bottom Girls’ for two reasons—her love of Freddie Mercury and belief that the song (though created before she was alive) is a personal anthem of sorts for her, and closed their main set with a punch. 

The three song encore began with the new and unabashedly pop ‘Best One Yet’ which featured doo-wop like background vocals, followed by the catchy ‘Live Forever’, the first single on what was supposed to be their third full-length before the band parted ways with their former label (and it happened to be Team USA’s official song for the summer games). 

‘DONE’ was the perfect ending for the evening, both in terms of message that it was over, and in terms of playing it with intensity; the lyrics of which, gave Kimberly a chance to display some sassy attitude to help interpret them. 

The crossover from country to pop is much more blurred than it used to be and given the path that someone like Taylor Swift has proven, conquering both worlds while broadening your overall fan base is more than possible. 

With the hybrid sound and overall likeability that The Band Perry has, it seems like they may be next in line for that genre-crossing, jackpot level of success.
