The 23rd Anniversary Transmission, with DJ Jake Rudh, is this March 29, 2024, at First Avenue, in Minneapolis. This is a great social event that you can spend on your Friday night with your friends. Music is the best of the 70s, 80s, and 90s… stuff we like, including lots of Britpop.

We attended the 14th Annual Transmission show in March 2015 and wrote, “Turnout to this Saturday event was very, very good, with the main dance floor generally full, as you can see from the photos. Everyone we ran into were generally smiling, drinking, being social, and having a good time. If you have attended any Transmission shows (or seen a UK band live), chances are, you will already be familiar with DJ Jake Rudh's music tastes, but he will play to the crowd. For the Transmission audience, the majority of music were of that alternative 80s/90s era, like Talking Heads, The Cure, Run DMC, New Order, Billy Idol, Beastie Boys, Beck, and, of course, The Smiths. However, once in a while, he'll throw in a curve ball, like Franz Ferdinand, MGMT, or MIA.”

We saw Bailen in June 2019 and wrote, “The NYC group recently released their debut album Thrilled To Be Here (Fantasy Records), and they were literally thrilled to be playing some choice cuts from the record like “Something Tells Me”, “I Was Wrong”, and the rousing foot-stomper “Not Gonna Take Me”. Before “Stray Dog”, Daniel said that it was nice to be back in the city (headlining the 7th Street Entry on 25 February 2019), but admitted that they didn’t miss the “negative 28 degrees”.”

Clovis’ BEL to open. I have a soft spot for Clovis and Fresno bands, as I used to live in the area.

Irish singer Hozier is currently on a sold-out American tour, stopping by the State Theatre in Minneapolis on June 2nd.

Opening up the show was sibling band Bailen, featuring Julia, Daniel, and David Bailen. There’s a certain homemade charm about them, as we discovered the first time we encountered the trio with Joseph in Sep 2017.

The NYC group recently released their debut album Thrilled To Be Here (Fantasy Records), and they were literally thrilled to be playing some choice cuts from the record like “Something Tells Me”, “I Was Wrong”, and the rousing foot-stomper “Not Gonna Take Me”.

Before “Stray Dog”, Daniel said that it was nice to be back in the city (headlining the 7th Street Entry on 25 February 2019), but admitted that they didn’t miss the “negative 28 degrees”.

For their self-admitted most pop song, “Going On A Feeling”, the group joked that they needed to turn on the auto-tune machine in the back.

They closed out their 35-min set with the harmonizing “25 For The Last Time”.

Once again, Irish singer and songwriter Hozier is selling out his US tour. We first mentioned his popularity in February 2015, stating “Irish singer-songwriter Hozier is enjoying a sold out American tour this Winter. He's touring in support of his eponymous debut self-titled studio album, which hit #1 on the Irish chart and #2 in the US charts.”

What is even more impressive is that while the debut self-titled album only reached #2 on the US chart, Hozier’s sophomore album Wasteland, Baby! went straight to #1 - thanks to such strong singles as “Movement” and “Almost (Sweet Music)”.

Although his international breakout single “Take Me To Church” (which the band closed out the show with), I think the real secret to Hozier’s success is his very excellent band and backup singers. They were all giving their 150%, and you can just tell how much they love playing these songs.

Wasteland, Baby! is out now on Rubyworks/Island Records.

Dan Wilson’s Re-Covered is out now. The unique album finds the Grammy-winning songwriter reinterpreting songs from his past, including a re-interpretation of his Semisonic band’s hit song ‘Closing Time’.

If you follow Wilson’s career, after Semisonic, he started writing hit songs for other artists, such as songs for Taylor Swift (‘Treacherous’) and Adele (‘Someone Like You’)… so, for the first time, we get to hear how Wilson would approach his own songs.

In addition to the album, there is also a deluxe edition CD with hardcover book, which contains drawings, essays, lyrics, and songwriting observations about all those songs he’s written.

The tour kicks off next Friday, September 22nd, at the Fitzgerald Theater in St Paul.

All sisters band Joseph (named after their grandfather) is returning to Minneapolis at First Avenue’s mainroom this Saturday. Their new seven-track EP, Stay Awake is available on ATO Records. The collection features some demos, singles, and covers of Tears For Fears’ ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’ and the Rolling Stones’ ‘Moonlight Mile’.

Wild Cub is playing the Triple Rock Social Club on Saturday, September 23rd, in support of their sophomore album Closer (Mom+Pop).

The last time the band was in town, they opened up for Bleachers in 2014… this time with Closer the band is headlining.

Show up early to check out Parade Of Lights. We caught the electro-rock quartet in 2015 and wrote, “Singer Ryan Daly’s hair has even turned golden since we last saw them, with keys/synth player Michelle Ashley bringing plenty of enthusiasm while bass player Randy Schulte and drummer Anthony Improgo ably held up the back end. For whatever reason, this band that plays bright, sunny electro, was lit as dimly as London’s Underground during the blitz, making for a strange dichotomy that seemed counter to their music, though the songs themselves, remain irresistible.”

Should be a great night of music.
